My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly
Chapter 57: Vault Looting, The Illusion ArtifactNeleak’s palace sat twenty miles east of the canyon bunker. It was a sprawling, brutalist fortress carved directly from the red rock of the desert cliffs.
The Remnant vanguard had marched through the night to seize it. It did not require a war. Saile had simply walked through the towering steel gates, letting the suffocating pressure of his Diamond-Tier core bleed into the courtyard. The remaining loyalist guards, leaderless and terrified by the boy who had
decapitated their tyrant, dropped their weapons into the sand.
Now, Saile sat on an obsidian throne in the central hall.
A dead guard captain lay sprawled on the woven silk rugs at his feet. Dark blood soaked quietly into the expensive fabric, staining the gold embroidery. Saile rested his chin on his knuckles, his brown eyes cold and calculating as he watched the dust settle in the silent room.
Mrog’s heavy boots echoed across the polished stone floor.
The giant warlord carried a cracked crystal screen tucked under his thick arm. He looked exhausted. His armor was chipped and smeared with dried blood from the canyon meat grinder. Lady Vesper was miles away, resting in the bunker’s medical wing. Mrog carried the burden of command alone.
"The perimeter is secure, Sovereign," Mrog reported, bowing his scarred head deeply. "The surviving loyalists are chained in the lower pens. The weapon caches are being inventoried. This estate is entirely yours."
Saile gave a slow, measured nod. "What are you holding?"
Mrog set the crystal screen on a low, dark wooden table.
"A broadcast receiver," Mrog explained, his rough voice tight with unease. "The dead tyrant used it to receive encrypted orders from the Central Continent. It recorded a global mandate an hour ago. The entire world saw it."
Mrog tapped the cracked glass. The screen flared to life, projecting a crisp, three-dimensional blue image into the dim throne room.
High Pope Naissac filled the display.
The False God wore pristine golden robes. His voice spilled from the crystal, rich with manufactured warmth and deep, fatherly concern. He spoke of a great darkness rising in the desert. He warned the citizens of the world about the Catastrophe-Class Heretic who sought to bring the dark ages back to their peaceful lands.
Then, the Pope offered a warm, comforting smile.
"The Holy Vanguard Academy will open its gates three months early," Naissac declared, raising his hands in a gesture of salvation. "We will train a new generation of God Slayers to hunt this demon."
A sharp, violent ache spiked directly behind Saile’s ribs. It was not his own anger.
Naicul thrashed inside their shared core. The pure, unadulterated hatred radiating from the Fallen God made the temperature in the throne room plummet instantly. A thin layer of white frost crawled rapidly across the armrests of the obsidian throne, cracking the stone.
"He wears my stolen divinity so well," Naicul hissed. The ancient voice vibrated with raw, centuries-old killing intent.
Saile reached out. He crushed the crystal screen in his bare hand.
The glass snapped into fine powder, cutting the broadcast off abruptly. The shards fell like snow into the pooling blood on the rug. The silence in the room returned, heavy and suffocating.
"He knows we are coming," Saile said quietly, brushing the glass dust from his palm.
Mrog shifted his weight, watching the frost melt from the table. The giant man looked deeply unsettled.
"The Academy is a trap, Sovereign," Mrog warned, taking a step closer. "The Pope wants you to march our forces into the Central Continent. He wants to draw us out of the desert so his Immortal Saints can incinerate us from the sky. It is bait."
"I know," Saile replied.
He stood up, stepping smoothly over the dead captain. Leading five thousand half-starved rebels against a fortified holy capital was pure suicide. Neleak’s army had been a disorganized mob of mercenaries. The Church’s true military, backed by S-Rank Paladins and orbital light magic, would turn the Remnants to ash.
He needed a different angle. He needed a knife in the dark.
"Take me to the treasury," Saile commanded.
Mrog led the way without another word. They descended deep into the bedrock of
the palace, navigating a tight spiral staircase guarded by heavy iron gates. The air grew stale, thick with the smell of old dust, oxidized copper, and rusted metal.
Neleak’s private vault sat behind a foot of solid white steel. Mrog handed Saile the tyrant’s heavy iron key ring. Saile turned the lock, the internal gears grinding loudly, and pushed the door open.
The room inside glittered blindly in the torchlight.
Mountains of stamped gold coins spilled from rotting wooden chests. Stacks of refined mana crystals cast a pale, flickering blue glow across the walls. Racks of stolen weaponry lined the back of the cavernous room, holding broadswords, spears, and heavy iron shields.
"The Church paid him very well to keep us contained in the canyons," Saile noted, kicking a stray gold coin across the floor.
He ignored the gold. Wealth meant nothing to a Transcendent-tier fighter.
He raised his left hand, letting the Endless Devourer wake in his chest. Chains of dark lightning shot from his palm, whipping aggressively across the weapon racks.
The dark magic gripped the low-tier steel. It dissolved the metal into glowing purple dust, stripping away the useless iron and isolating the pure magical essence. The system vacuumed the raw materials straight into his inventory.
[Loot Acquired: Weapon Fragment x120]
As the purple dust settled to the floor, a single item caught his eye.
In the far, darkest corner of the vault stood a pristine marble pedestal. A delicate silver choker rested on the stone. It was carved in the shape of a closed, weeping eye.
It did not radiate the destructive elemental magic of a weapon. It hummed with a strange, twisting frequency. Looking directly at it made Saile’s vision blur slightly, as if the air itself was folding around the cold metal.
"What is that?" Saile murmured, stepping closer to the pedestal.
"An illusion artifact," Naicul answered. The God’s blinding rage faded into a dark, cynical amusement.
"The Spirit Elves forged these centuries ago so they could walk among humans undetected," Naicul explained smoothly, his voice echoing in the hollow vault. "It bends light. It bends mana. It masks the true face of the wearer and hides the core entirely. A flawless counterfeit."
A low, rumbling chuckle vibrated through Saile’s mind. The Fallen God was forming a plan.
"The False Father wants to play a grand game," Naicul purred. "He wants to draw you out of the shadows. Let us give him exactly what he wants."
Saile turned the silver eye over in his palm. The metal felt ice-cold. "We walk into the trap?"
"We walk right through his front door," Naicul corrected.
The God’s presence swelled in his chest, pushing ancient, buried memories directly into Saile’s brain. Images flashed rapidly behind his eyes. He saw a sprawling underground military complex. He saw vast armories forged from black steel, filled with weapons that could level mountains.
"The Holy Vanguard Academy is not just a school for spoiled nobles," Naicul revealed. The bitter hatred in his voice returned, thick and venomous.
"A thousand years ago, that land belonged to me," the God spat. "It was my primary armory. When Naissac betrayed me, he didn’t just steal my throne. He built his precious academy directly on top of my ruins. He did it to guard my severed flesh."
Saile’s breath hitched. "Another Divine Fragment is under the school."
"My right arm," Naicul stated. "The bone you ate in the desert was merely a finger. It gave you a domain. If we absorb my right arm, the Endless Devourer will mutate beyond mortal comprehension."
Saile stared down at the silver artifact. The puzzle pieces snapped together in his mind.
A marching army would be slaughtered by the Saints. But a single, unremarkable student answering the Pope’s global mandate could slip past the golden gates
undetected.
"An undercover infiltration," Saile said softly to himself.
"The ultimate arrogant move," Naicul agreed. "He invites the world’s prodigies to train as God Slayers. We will accept his gracious invitation. We will eat his resources, steal my arm, and collapse his holy fortress from the inside."
Saile closed his fist around the choker.
It was a staggering, borderline suicidal risk. The Vanguard Academy was packed with S-Rank nobles, elite Inquisitors, and hyper-perceptive instructors. If his disguise failed for a single second, he would be surrounded by enemies with zero backup.
But he thought of Avery.
His little sister was out there, trapped somewhere in Church territory. Her terrified face flashed in his mind. He needed the raw power to tear the Saints from their thrones. He needed that fragment to ensure no one could ever hurt her again.
"Mrog," Saile called out.
The giant warlord stepped into the vault, eyeing the cleared weapon racks with a raised, scarred brow.
"Sovereign?" Mrog asked.
"I am leaving the Lawless Zone," Saile declared, turning to face his general.
Mrog’s good eye widened in shock. The giant took a step forward. "My Lord, the army has just united. We have armor. We have morale. We await your command to march on the border."
"If we march now, we burn," Saile replied coldly. "You will command the Remnants from this palace. Move Vesper here when she is stable enough to travel. Use the gold in this vault to fortify the perimeter and buy supplies from the black market."
Saile walked past the giant, slipping the silver choker securely into his pocket.
"Drill the soldiers," Saile ordered, his tone brokering no argument. "Build me a force capable of crushing a holy armada when the time comes."
Mrog swallowed hard. He recognized the tone. It was not a request. It was the absolute law of the Sovereign.
"Where will you go, my Lord?" Mrog asked, his voice subdued.
"To school," Saile answered.
He climbed the spiral staircase, leaving the cold treasury behind. The path forward was set in stone. The harsh desert had forged his Diamond-Tier body, but the Central Continent would test his mind and his cunning.
He needed to test the elven artifact. He needed to build a flawless, unbreakable fake identity.
He was going to become the sheep walking willingly into the wolf’s den.
