My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly

Chapter 60: Commoner Disguise, The Vanguard Academy

The smuggler’s caravan groaned to a halt at the edge of the Holy Capital’s outer ring. The cracked earth of the borderlands vanished, replaced by smooth, sweeping cobblestones. The air here lost the metallic tang of the desert, trading it for the scent of polished marble and burned incense.

Kobb hopped down from the driver’s bench, dusting off his tunic.

"This is as far as we go, Gabriel," the merchant called out, tossing a waterskin into the back of the wagon. "City guards do not let merchant carts past the outer ring without a royal permit. You walk the rest."

Saile caught the skin out of the air. He dropped his shoulders, burying the lethal, upright posture of a Transcendent beneath the exhausted slouch of a street orphan.

"Thank you, sir," Saile said softly, lacing his tone with nervous hesitation.

He climbed over the wooden tailgate. Adjusting his itchy linen tunic, he hoisted the canvas-wrapped Calamity Fang onto his back. The thick wrapping disguised the deadly Epic-grade odachi as a lumpy, oversized bedroll.

"Stay out of the central plazas," Kobb advised, leaning against his tired ox. "The mandate brought a swarm of high-born nobles today. They do not take kindly to commoners crowding their streets. Keep your head down."

Saile nodded. He turned away from the wagons and walked toward the towering white walls of the inner city.

The Holy Capital was a monument to raw arrogance.

Gleaming white spires pierced the sky. Gold and red silk banners snapped sharply in the wind. Every major intersection featured a marble statue of an Immortal Saint, their faces carved into expressions of blind benevolence.

Saile passed a towering likeness of High Pope Naissac holding a golden sunburst.

"He made himself taller," Naicul whispered.

The God’s voice scraped against Saile’s ribs like rusted iron. A deep, vibrating hatred made the temperature in Saile’s chest plummet.

"Naissac was a coward who fought from the back lines," Naicul sneered. His dark memories bled into Saile’s brain. "Now he carves himself out of marble. Look at this filth. They breathe my air and walk on my stolen earth."

"Quiet," Saile warned mentally. "We are in the center of the web."

The silver elven choker burned against his throat.

The artifact worked overtime to suppress the Endless Devourer. The sheer concentration of holy magic in the Capital acted like a suffocating blanket, making his dark core writhe like a starved beast. Saile funneled a microscopic thread of energy through the choker’s filter. A pathetic yellow glow pulsed

beneath his skin, projecting the exact signature of a Level 5 Light Element weakling.

The walk to the inner city took hours. He followed a stream of carriages and armored knights until the Holy Vanguard Academy loomed into view.

It was a fortress built for the elite. The outer walls were forged from solid white stone, lined with glowing golden runes. Heavy iron gates stood wide open, guarded by a dozen high-ranking Inquisitors in gleaming silver armor.

Saile stopped at the edge of the entrance plaza.

The courtyard was packed. Thousands of teenagers from across the continent had

answered the Pope’s mandate. The air crackled with untamed elemental energy.

These were not the starving mercenaries of the Lawless Zone. These were the pampered prodigies of the Church. Boys in tailored silk coats showed off their S-Rank fire magic, laughing as they conjured burning ravens. Girls in enchanted mythril armor rode tamed elemental beasts. They moved with the unearned confidence of children who had never faced death.

"Look at them," Naicul growled. "Painted sheep pretending to be wolves."

Saile kept his bright blue eyes fixed on the ground. He merged into the back of the throng, shuffling forward. His cheap clothes and dirty canvas bundle drew immediate stares.

"Did a beggar wander through the wrong gate?" a sharp voice mocked.

Saile didn’t look up. Three minor nobles intentionally blocked the path to the

registration tables. The speaker, a tall boy in a dark red doublet stitched with silver thread, stepped directly into Saile’s path.

"Hey, peasant," the noble snapped. "The soup kitchens are in the lower ring. Scram."

The boy shoved Saile hard in the shoulder.

A month ago, Saile would have stumbled. Today, his Diamond-Tier bones registered the push as a faint breeze. He had to actively force his muscles to yield to the weak strike.

Saile stumbled backward, dragging his boot against the stone to catch his balance awkwardly.

"I... I am here to enroll," Saile stammered. He widened his fake blue eyes, playing the terrified slum kid perfectly.

The noble barked a cruel laugh. His friends joined in, sneering at Saile’s ragged boots.

"Enroll?" the noble scoffed.

He flared his mana. A searing ring of blue flames ignited around his fists. Heat washed over Saile’s face, carrying the scent of burning ozone.

"The mandate is for prodigies, rat," the noble threatened. "Not dishwashers. What is your talent? Scrubbing floors?"

Saile looked at the boy’s exposed throat. It would take a fraction of a second to drive his hand forward, crush the noble’s windpipe, and snap his neck before the flames even flickered.

"Rip his jaw off," Naicul suggested coldly. "Use the bone to stab his friends."

Saile ignored the urge. He raised his hands defensively, letting the weak yellow light pool in his palms.

"Light element," Saile said softly.

The nobles stared at the pathetic glow. It looked like a dying candle against their roaring blue flames.

The dark-haired boy extinguished his fire with a flick of his wrist.

"A generic light user," the noble spat in disgust. "You will be dead in the first training drill. Stay out of my way, trash."

The boy shoved past him, intentionally knocking his shoulder against Saile’s chest. Saile stood quietly in the crowd, letting the yellow light fade back into his skin.

"Add him to the list," Saile thought.

"He is at the very top," Naicul purred.

Saile continued his slow shuffle forward. The registration line moved at a grinding pace. Dozens of priests sat behind long mahogany tables, holding clear testing crystals to log the names and elements of every new student.

This was the final hurdle.

The illusion artifact fooled the naked eye, but the Church’s crystals read the soul. If the stone detected the Endless Devourer, the golden gates would slam shut. Inquisitors would draw their swords, and Saile would be fighting for his life in the center of the Capital.

"Control the friction," Naicul reminded him, sensing Saile’s rising heartbeat. "Do not let the frost leak."

Saile reached the front of the line.

An exhausted priest sat behind the desk, not looking up from his thick leather ledger.

"Name and origin," the priest droned, dipping a quill into black ink.

"Gabriel," Saile answered softly. "An orphan from the southern borders."

The priest glanced up. His lip curled in faint pity at the dirty canvas wrapped around Saile’s back.

"Place your hand on the stone, Gabriel," the priest ordered, gesturing to the clear orb. "Let us see if the Light truly favors you."

Saile took a measured breath. He locked the freezing ocean of his EX-Rank core behind mental iron. He squeezed a single thread of mana through the silver choker. The friction burned against his throat like a hot coal.

He placed his pale hand flat against the crystal.

The stone sat dormant for a terrifying heartbeat. Then, it flickered. A soft, warm yellow light filled the orb. It was a weak, struggling flame.

A golden system screen projected above the crystal for the priest to read.

[Talent: C-Rank - Basic Light]

The priest sighed, shaking his head. He scribbled the fake name onto his ledger.

"C-Rank," the priest muttered. "Barely above a common guard. You are lucky the

Pope mandated open enrollment, boy. A year ago, you would not have made it past

the courtyard."

The priest pushed a small brass token across the table.

"Take this to the freshman barracks," the man said dismissively. "Keep your head down and try not to get killed in the sparring rings."

"Thank you, Father," Saile whispered, taking the token.

He walked away from the table, crossing the threshold of the grand mahogany doors. He stepped into the sprawling interior of the Holy Vanguard Academy.

The halls were lined with banners of victory and marble statues. Elite instructors walked the corridors, their chests decorated with medals earned by slaughtering Heretics in the outer zones.

Saile stood quietly near a marble pillar. He watched the arrogant nobles filter into the school, laughing and shoving each other.

He had walked straight through the center of the Church’s defenses. The silver choker rested invisibly against his neck. The Epic-grade weapon sat wrapped in dirty canvas on his back.

Deep beneath these polished floors, a piece of Naicul’s original divine body waited in the dark.

"We are inside," Saile thought.

"Yes," Naicul whispered. The Fallen God’s voice echoed with cold anticipation. "They wanted God Slayers. They wanted to train killers."

Saile looked at the brass token in his hand. A ruthless smile formed on his face, hidden behind his innocent blue eyes.

The most wanted Heretic in the world had just enrolled in the Pope’s academy.

The games were about to begin.
