My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly
Chapter 62: Basic Swordsmanship, The Combat TestSaile walked down the shadowed, vaulted corridor. His cheap boots scraped against the marble floor. He held the rusted iron token for Class F in his palm.
Before he could reach the lower dormitories, a sharp, ringing bell echoed through the stone halls.
"All incoming freshmen must report to the eastern training rings," a magically amplified voice announced from the ceiling. "Physical combat evaluation begins now. Failure to attend results in immediate expulsion."
Saile paused. He slipped the iron token into his pocket.
"They do not let the rats rest," Naicul murmured in his mind. The ancient God
sounded deeply amused. "Let us see what passes for martial training in this era."
Saile adjusted the canvas-wrapped Calamity Fang on his back. He turned down a wide corridor lined with tall, open archways. The scent of ozone, sweat, and
scorched sand drifted on the air.
He stepped out into an enormous, open-air coliseum.
Dozens of sunken fighting rings dotted the sandy arena floor. Stone bleachers rose high along the walls, already packed with thousands of wealthy students.
The nobles were showing off. In the center rings, boys in enchanted armor traded flashy elemental spells. Fireballs collided with water whips. The crowd cheered, placing bets with silver coins and clapping politely when a rich student secured a victory.
Saile shuffled to the back of the waiting line near Ring Seven.
He kept his posture slumped. His bright blue eyes stared at the sand.
The instructor running Ring Seven was a tall, broad-shouldered man with a jagged scar cutting through his dark beard. He wore the white and gold uniform of the Academy, but his knuckles were wrapped in stained combat tape. He looked like a veteran who enjoyed hurting people.
"Next," the instructor barked, holding a thick leather clipboard.
Saile stepped up to the edge of the fighting pit.
The instructor looked him up and down. His eyes caught the cheap linen tunic and the dirty canvas bundle strapped to Saile’s back. The man’s lip curled in open disgust.
"Name and rank," the man demanded.
"Gabriel," Saile answered softly, forcing a nervous stutter into his voice. "F-Rank. Null."
The nobles sitting in the bleachers directly above Ring Seven groaned loudly.
"Another beggar," a familiar, arrogant voice sneered.
Caelum Vance, the dark-haired noble with the A-Rank fire talent from the courtyard, sat near the front row. He rested his polished boots on the stone railing.
"Throw him out, Instructor Thorne," Caelum laughed. "We came here to watch Awakeners, not street sweepers."
Instructor Thorne chuckled, tapping his quill against his clipboard.
"The global mandate says we have to evaluate everyone, Vance," Thorne replied
smoothly. "Even the trash. We just have to see how long they last."
Thorne turned a cold, sadistic gaze back to Saile.
"Leave your luggage by the wall, boy," Thorne ordered. "Pick a training weapon from the rack. You are up."
Saile unbuckled the thick canvas strap. He set the wrapped Epic-grade odachi gently against the stone wall, ensuring it looked like nothing more than a lumpy bedroll.
He walked over to a wooden weapon rack. It held blunt wooden swords, dull spears, and training shields.
Saile grabbed a standard wooden longsword. The wood was cheap and splintered. It possessed absolutely no magical enchantments. He gave it a single, lazy twirl to test the weight. It felt like holding a fragile dry twig.
He stepped down into the sandy fighting ring.
Thorne walked over to a large iron dial set into the arena wall.
"The evaluation is simple, Gabriel," Thorne announced loudly, making sure the nobles in the bleachers could hear. "Survive for thirty seconds against a training golem. If you step out of the ring, you fail."
Thorne grabbed the heavy iron dial.
Normally, an F-Rank student would face a wooden dummy. Instead, Thorne cranked the dial all the way to the right. The gears clicked with a harsh, metallic grinding noise.
A heavy iron gate on the opposite side of the ring rattled open.
Heavy, thudding footsteps shook the sand. A towering, nine-foot-tall mechanical golem marched out of the dark tunnel. It was forged from thick plates of dark iron. Its single, glowing red eye locked directly onto Saile.
The golem raised two massive, spiked iron fists.
"A Class-C Crusher," Naicul noted in Saile’s mind. The God sounded almost insulted. "They use this to execute prisoners. They want to break your ribs and send you packing."
The nobles in the bleachers erupted into cruel laughter.
"Thirty seconds?" Caelum called out, grinning widely. "I bet ten silver the peasant doesn’t last five!"
"I will take that bet!" another noble shouted. "His legs look skinny. He will run in three!"
Saile stood in the center of the ring. He held the cheap wooden sword loosely in his right hand.
He did not channel a single drop of dark mana. He did not activate the silver illusion choker to produce a fake yellow glow. He kept his EX-Rank core locked tightly behind a wall of mental iron.
He was not going to use his System skills.
"Show them the fundamentals," Naicul whispered coldly.
"Begin!" Thorne yelled, blowing a sharp brass whistle.
The iron golem charged.
To a normal human, the machine moved with terrifying, lethal speed. The sand kicked up behind its heavy iron feet. It raised a spiked metal fist, bringing it down in a brutal, crushing overhead smash aimed directly at Saile’s skull.
To Saile, the golem was moving underwater.
Diamond-Tier physical perception stripped the speed from the world. Saile saw the rusted joints in the machine’s knees. He saw the slight imbalance in its heavy shoulders.
Saile exhaled slowly. He dropped his stance.
He did not dodge backward. He stepped cleanly inside the golem’s guard.
The spiked iron fist whistled through the empty air where Saile’s head had been a fraction of a second prior. It slammed into the sand with a heavy thud.
Saile planted his left boot firmly into the dirt. He dropped his weight to the floor and whipped his right leg around in a blistering, low spin sweep.
He funneled raw, unadulterated physical kinetic energy from his hips straight down to his heel.
His boot slammed into the side of the golem’s iron ankles.
Crack!
The sound of buckling metal shrieked through the arena. The thick iron supports
snapping under Saile’s kick sounded like a carriage crash.
The raw physical force shattered the golem’s stance. The nine-foot-tall iron machine pitched violently forward, its center of gravity destroyed.
Saile did not stop. He chained the momentum of his spin sweep directly into an
upward vault.
He launched himself into the air, twisting his torso with flawless, ancient martial precision. He raised the cheap wooden training sword high above his head. He didn’t use a single ounce of magic. He just applied the pure, devastating physics of a Diamond-Tier body.
He brought the wooden blade down in a brutal jumping strike.
He aimed perfectly for the thin mechanical joint connecting the golem’s iron head to its thick torso.
Smack!
The wooden sword struck the iron neck joint. The sheer physical density and speed behind Saile’s swing acted like a guillotine.
The iron neck snapped clean in half.
The golem’s heavy, glowing head sheared right off its metal shoulders. It flew through the air, crashing into the arena wall with a loud, ringing clang. The red light in its eye flickered and died.
The headless iron body collapsed forward, hitting the sand in a lifeless, tangled heap of scrap metal.
Saile landed softly on his feet.
The cheap wooden training sword in his hand shattered. The wood could not handle
the raw kinetic transfer. It exploded into a dozen jagged splinters, leaving only the wrapped leather hilt in his grip.
Saile stood up straight. He tossed the broken wooden hilt onto the dead golem’s
chest.
He looked up at the large brass clock mounted on the arena wall.
Exactly three seconds had passed.
A stunning, absolute silence fell over Ring Seven.
The laughter in the bleachers died instantly. The wealthy nobles sat frozen in their seats. Caelum Vance stared down at the ruined iron machine, his jaw hanging slightly open.
They had fully expected the F-Rank commoner to be crushed into bloody paste.
Instead, the boy had dismantled a lethal iron weapon using a dry twig and raw physical speed.
Instructor Thorne dropped his leather clipboard. It hit the stone floor with a loud slap.
Thorne stared at Saile. His scarred face was pale. The instructor tried to speak, but the words caught in his throat. A Null possessed no elemental magic. They were supposed to be weak. But the sheer martial grace and bone-breaking power he had just witnessed defied logic.
"Did I pass?" Saile asked. His voice was soft and flat, cutting through the dead silence.
Thorne swallowed hard. The veteran instructor looked from the headless golem
back to the boy with the innocent blue eyes.
"You... you passed," Thorne stammered.
Saile nodded. He turned his back on the shocked instructor and the silent crowd of nobles.
He walked over to the stone wall and picked up his dirty canvas bundle. He slung the hidden Calamity Fang back over his shoulder.
"They think you are a physical mutation," Naicul noted, highly amused. "A peasant who worked in the mines and developed anomalous muscle density. Let them believe their foolish theories."
"It keeps the heat off my core," Saile agreed mentally.
He climbed the stone stairs, stepping out of the sandy fighting pit. The nobles in the bleachers watched him walk away. Nobody said a single word. Nobody threw an insult.
Saile slipped the rusted iron token from his pocket.
He had secured his place in the school. He had survived the first day without exposing his EX-Rank core. Now, he needed to find the trash bracket.
Saile left the coliseum and walked back into the dark stone corridors of the Academy, heading straight for Class F.
