The moment True Void Sense recognized those microscopic openings, the Void reacted to him with almost embarrassing eagerness and answered him more faithfully than a lost Chihuahua hearing its owner whistle from the end of the street.
That realization had nearly made Phei laugh in the middle of being in the middle of a World Transcendent army.
The giant moved incredibly fast and Phei was still a Master: Under ordinary circumstances, trying to exploit a flaw that existed for less than a heartbeat against someone fourteen cultivation stages above him would have been a charming way to die young.
But True Void Steps did not require Phei to become faster than the Behemoth-Dwarf.
He only needed the Void to remain open long enough for him to stop being here and become there.
That was the difference.
Speed governed movement through distance.
Phei temporarily abandoned distance... he’d grinned and attacked!
The Behemoth-Dwarf had raised one enormous arm perhaps to crush him before others knew what was going on... the corporeal field surged with the motion, billions of pressure currents colliding around the shoulder, ribs and neck.
True Void Sense illuminated the imperfections.
Phei chose one and he then he entered the Void-State.
The World Transcendent’s fist moved... Phei ceased occupying the battlefield.
For that fraction of an instant, the giant’s impossible instantaneous speed had nothing to strike.
Phei followed the hollow seam running along the boundary of the corporeal field, slipped through a null lacuna opened by the giant’s own heartbeat and emerged inside the very pressure that had rejected him moments earlier.
His fingers touched the enormous man’s skin.
That was all Lust Reality required.
Phei had looked up at a face large enough to make his entire body feel insulting like a speck of dust and intones quietly:
"Lust Reality."
The Behemoth-Dwarf never even finished to start his attack and intense burning desire invaded his whole being and touched his soul!
The ability seized the deepest hunger inside him before his soul understood it was under assault and a new reality formed around that hunger with terrifying speed, complete enough that the World Transcendent’s consciousness recognized the counterfeit world before it recognized Phei’s touch as danger...
... and his soul disappeared.
Once Lust Reality finished forming, cultivation stopped mattering for the first four hours.
That was the obscene part.
Had the Behemoth-Dwarf known what Phei’s touch could do, he might have guarded against contact with every scrap of his power. He might have layered his soul in defenses, retreated instead of attacking, flooded his body with authority or simply destroyed the entire region before allowing a Mortal near him.
Surprise had given Phei the touch.
After the reality closed, surprise was no longer required.
For four hours, even a World Transcendent remained trapped.
Phei looked at the enormous unconscious body below now.
"First objective accomplished."
Eira stared at him: "You say that while his..."
"Don’t."
Eira’s lips twitched. "Master, I was only..."
"Don’t."
She wisely stopped. Phei raised his gaze toward the remaining Chained.
The first objective had succeeded.
Danton was gone and the strongest World Transcendent had been removed from battle.
Unfortunately, whatever advantage surprise had given Phei died with the Behemoth-Dwarf:
The remaining World Transcendents and three of them had attacked him in pure alertness and wary of him but now they had seen too much now and knew so much too; the Undead Queen knew Death behaved strangely inside his soul, the two Vampires had learned that powers aimed at him could return wearing his handprints, the Blood Elf had felt something in Phei answer her own with an arrogance that had no business belonging to a mere Master.
And every one of them had witnessed Infinity Control turn Anactica’s winter into his territory even though out could barely hurt them it was still part of his infinity conscious.
Their next response after the initial pause was immediate:
The Blood Elf drew her crimson mist closer and tightened it around her body, the Vampires separated rather than offering him another convenient pair of targets, the Naga climbed farther from the mirrored ice below, the Gorgon compressed his authority around himself, and even the four Demons stopped wasting corruption across the battlefield and gathered it into darker, denser mantles around their bodies.
They were adapting, learning him with every breath, and against beings fourteen cultivation stages above him, that was extremely bad news.
Phei felt the change in them, saw their caution hardening into strategy, and smiled anyway.
The smile made Eira nervous: "What?"
"Nothing."
"Master."
Phei lifted one foot.
Then placed it back down.
The whole of Anactica throbbed; it was a subtle movement, yet Infinity Control carried the command through every frozen current he had seized and the rising tides of ice suddenly collapsed toward the ground in one breathtaking wave.
Glaciers flattened and snowfields compressed.
Jagged ridges dissolved beneath flowing frost.
Cracks filled and crater rims smoothed.... even the ancient Titan became increasingly buried beneath crystal until its colossal corpse resembled a dead god sealed beneath the floor of some impossible palace.
Within seconds, the battlefield transformed.
Mirror ice spread outward.
Perfectly smooth.... Perfectly reflective.
It raced across Anactica in every direction visible to the eye, swallowing rough terrain beneath a glossy black-white surface so clear that the World Transcendents hovering overhead found their own reflections staring up from below.
Then more mirrors appeared as Infinity Control continued rewriting Anactica beneath them.
Vast walls of ice rose from the frozen plain miles away, some perfectly vertical while others curved through the storm like enormous crystal crescents, and countless floating slabs turned their polished faces toward the battlefield until the world seemed to multiply around the Chained.
The Blood Elf found Phei staring back at her from the mirror beneath her feet, the female Vampire caught his white-haired reflection upon a distant glacier, the Naga saw him standing inside an ice wall beyond the Coffer, and even the Undead Queen’s fathomless black eyes began shifting between images scattered across the frozen expanse.
Phei himself had never moved from beneath Eira, with Consort holding the opposite side of the battlefield, yet through Infinity Control and True Void Sense the entire mirrored landscape had become an extension of his perception.
Every mirror was ice, every piece of ice belonged to him, and every tremor passing through those crystalline surfaces returned something useful: the subtle gathering of essence before an attack, the tightening of defensive authorities, the warping of nearby space beneath powerful bodies, even the minute disturbances caused whenever one of the World Transcendents shifted position.
More importantly, he could see the hollows.
True Void Sense peeled back the apparent solidity of their defenses and revealed the infinitesimal spatial lacunae appearing between overlapping authorities and their domains they’d created around themselves, tiny null-pockets born whenever barriers flexed, muscles moved or immense power changed direction.
Most vanished too quickly for any ordinary cultivator to exploit, while others were squeezed so narrow that even True Void Steps could not safely enter them, but Phei did not need a doorway large enough for a man.
He needed the Void to recognize an opening.
That was enough.
His deep Void-Ice eyes settled upon the two Vampires, and the female immediately met his gaze with her newly regenerated fingers curling into crimson claws while her male counterpart drifted farther from her, clearly unwilling to offer Phei another convenient pair of targets.
Smart. Phei’s smile only deepened.
They were still thinking in terms of pursuit, speed and distance, which meant they had not yet understood the truly troublesome part of his movement.
The mirrored plain trembled, and suddenly Phei’s millions of reflections stopped agreeing with one another.
One turned its head before the real Phei moved, another smiled several breaths too late, while a third simply disappeared from the ice despite Phei remaining visibly in place.
The female Vampire’s expression changed at once as her perception swept across the mirrors, but by then Eira had already felt the Void stir and Consort’s eyes had sharpened from across the battlefield.
Neither interfered.
Around Phei, the spatial interstices began opening like hairline wounds too thin for ordinary sight, hollow sutures briefly connecting one absence to another as the Void answered him with disturbing familiarity. His outline softened, black-white radiance slipping from the edges of his body while the mirrored world beneath him seemed to deepen into something bottomless.
Phei took one step forward, yet his foot never touched the ice.
For an instant, Anarctica possessed no position that belonged to him.
Every reflection scattered across the frozen world vanished simultaneously, the Void swallowed his presence so completely that even the World Transcendents’ senses found nothing to seize, and by the time the next heartbeat arrived, Phei Ryujin Tiamat was no longer anywhere ordinary space knew how to describe.
