The heavy oak gates of Oakhaven stood flung wide open, draped in festive banners of white silk and imperial gold. To the common eye, the town square was transformed into a paradise of peace—flower garlands coiled around marble arches, minstrels played lutes on stone steps, and tables groaned under roast pheasants and sweet regional wines.
Standing at the base of the central stairs was Duke Owen.
He wore a pristine crimson velvet tunic embroidered with the golden lion of the Western Duchy, but no amount of silk could hide the hollow gray ring beneath his eyes. His jaw was clenched so tightly that his teeth ground together, his hands clasped behind his back to hide their uncontrollable tremor. He stood flanked by his senior honor guard, trying desperately to project the image of a calm, authoritative host while every fiber of his being screamed in panic.
A horn sounded from the northern archway.
Queen Moriele’s silver convoy glided into the square. Two hundred elven spell-swords marched in eerie, silent unity, their silver breastplates reflecting the sunlight like polished mirrors. Right behind them, a second horn blared from the southern gate—the ground trembling as King Golrath and his 500 Iron Vanguard surged into the plaza, their blackened plate armor and massive tower shields clattering like iron mountain slides.
Owen forced a stiff, practiced smile onto his pale face, stepping forward with outstretched arms.
"Welcome, sovereigns of the silver woods and the high peaks!" Owen announced, his voice booming across the plaza, though an attentive ear could catch the nervous edge beneath it. "On behalf of the Western Duchy and the Imperial Crown, I bid you welcome to Oakhaven! The Emperor’s personal legion is currently securing the outer passes—His Imperial Majesty Marcus IV will arrive shortly to preside over this historic summit!"
King Golrath did not offer a polite bow. He stopped ten paces away, his dark eyes glaring at Owen with absolute, primal contempt. He sniffed the air loudly, grunting as his hand rested heavily on the pommel of his war-axe.
"You look sick," Golrath rumbled, his voice carrying through the square like rolling thunder. "A man who hosts a feast shouldn’t look like he’s waiting for his own execution."
Owen’s smile twitched violently, but he held his tongue, bowing lower to Queen Moriele as she stepped down from her ironwood carriage.
"Your Majesty," Owen murmured.
Moriele barely acknowledged him. Her amber eyes swept over the square, her gaze lingering on the imperial banners fluttering overhead. Beside her, Elder Everwood offered a warm, polite nod to Owen and the gathered human lords.
"Lead us to our quarters," Moriele said softly, her chime-like voice cutting through the tension. "We shall rest before the Emperor arrives."
"Of course! Right this way!" Owen stammered, signaling his lieutenants to lead the separate delegations to their grand estates on opposite sides of the central plaza.
As the elven spell-swords and Beastkin Vanguard marched past each other, the air between them grew suffused with thick, suffocating hostility. Hand rested on sword hilts; fangs were bared in silent warnings.
Inside the central watchtower, a lieutenant leaned toward the captain of Owen’s garrison. "Sir, should we activate the spatial jamming stakes now?"
"Are you insane?!" the captain hissed back, smacking the lieutenant’s helmet. "Queen Moriele is a grand archmage and Golrath’s senses can smell a trap miles away! If we lock down the spatial perimeter before the meeting begins, they’ll turn this town into a mass grave before the Emperor even arrives! We hold the arrays until both rulers step into the council chamber. Not a second sooner!"
---
Two miles west of Oakhaven, high on a rocky ridge overlooking the valley, three figures stood hidden beneath the shadow of a jagged cliff.
Vince stood at the edge, his dark leather coat fluttering in the mountain wind. Behind him, Vetra leaned against a boulder, flexing her knuckles, while Lyrielle stood near the unconscious body of Kira—who remained completely bound and motionless, wrapped tightly in Vince’s pitch-black Shadow Bind threads.
Vince’s eyes were closed. His pulse was steady, his kinetic core humming smoothly within his chest.
Suddenly, his purple eyes snapped open.
His gaze locked onto the distant, stone walls of Oakhaven.
Deep within the center of the town, amidst hundreds of cluttered, mundane human signals, his perception picked up a single, unmistakable mana core. It burned with a dense, radiant silver-blue light—a signature he had engraved into his memory during his stay in the first canopy.
Moriele.
---
Inside her luxurious quarters on the upper floor of the eastern estate, Queen Moriele stood near her balcony window.
Suddenly, her breath hitched.
Her hand shot to her chest, pressing firmly against her sapphire gown. Beneath her silk, the hidden mark etched over her heart flared with a sudden, searing warmth—a sharp, throbbing pulse that vibrated in exact resonance with her own heartbeat.
Moriele gasped softly, her amber eyes widening in shock. She gripped the balcony railing, her knuckles turning white as she stared out toward the western ridge beyond the city walls.
"You..." she whispered into the empty room, her heart pounding against her ribs. "You’re here..."
---
Back on the ridge, Vince’s brow furrowed in deep suspicion.
"What is it?" Vetra asked, noticing his sudden stillness. "Did you see Owen’s scouts?"
"No," Vince murmured, his voice cold and analytical. "Moriele is down there."
Lyrielle blinked in total shock. "The High Queen of the Moon Elves? In a human border town?"
"Why would she be here?" Vince thought to himself, his jaw tightening. "The woman who almost had me executed in her solar... sitting inside Duke Owen’s domain?"
He needed to see the entire board.
Without a word of warning, Vince bent his knees, his muscles coiling like steel springs.
BOOM!
The ground beneath his boots shattered as Vince launched himself straight into the sky. He shot upward like a kinetic missile, soaring hundreds of feet above the tree line into the open air.
At the apex of his leap, Vince activated his vision—the core-sight he had harvested from Rin.
His vision shifted instantly. The physical world melted away into a translucent map of pure, raw energy. He saw the layout of Oakhaven—and what he saw made his eyes narrow in dangerous realization.
The town wasn’t just populated. It was an absolute powder keg.
To the north sat a dense cluster of 200 silver mana cores—elven spell-swords. To the south, a massive, dense block of 500 raging, red-hot physical cores—the Beastkin Vanguard. In the center sat Duke Owen’s garrison, and hidden within the cellar vaults were dozens of dormant, dark-mana arrays waiting to be sparked.
"A summit," Vince realized as gravity pulled him back down. "They gathered all the leaders into one confined killing box."
Vince plummeted from the sky, landing silently back on the ridge in the exact spot he had left, barely kicking up a cloud of dust.
"We need to take caution," Vince said coldly, turning to Vetra and Lyrielle. "This town isn’t a regional post. It’s a slaughterhouse waiting for the trigger. We approach through the western gate and—"
Vince stopped mid-sentence.
His hand drifted to his side ready to materialize executioners edge as his innate perception flared.
At the base of the ridge, stepping out from the shadowed tree line directly onto the dusty western road, was a single figure.
Gareth walked forward at an unhurried, measured pace. He wore no helmet, his dark coat sweeping over his boots, his hands resting casually at his sides. Strapped across his back were two heavy, iron spatial-suppression rods, glowing with a faint, dampening purple light.
He stopped thirty paces away from Vince, blocking the path into Oakhaven entirely alone.
Gareth reached down, slowly drawing his longsword from its sheath. The polished steel caught the afternoon sun, humming with a terrifyingly dense, refined edge of physical aura.
Gareth looked up, his sharp, emotionless eyes locking directly onto Vince’s purple gaze.
"You’ve caused a great deal of noise, boy," Gareth said softly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet road. "Duke Owen wants your corpse. Emperor Marcus wants you in chains."
Gareth raised his blade, pointing the tip directly at Vince’s chest.
"I don’t care about reasons for either of their wishes. Step forward... and let us end this farce."
