Bernadette quickly defended herself by stretching out her arm and casting a spell that formed a spherical barrier.

It was the space-element spell, Ars Orbis, which formed a layer of protection around her as the flames washed over it.

Her protection disengaged after as Bernadette went on with another attempt to cast a spell, only for Valerie to cancel it once more; using her sealing magic to seal off the spell at its inception before immediately returning with another form of attack.

They both paced around the ground, repeating the same sequence. Valerie consistently stopped Bernadette from delivering attacks while she herself continued launching attacks, forcing Bernadette to remain on the defensive.

Then, at some point, they stopped.

Bernadette had an intrigued look on her face as she said, "Is your intention to stop me from casting any attacks?"

Valerie nodded. "Yes, Miss Bernadette. I am aware of how powerful they say your space-element spells are..."

"I’m not sure I am able to defend against them, so I am preventing you from casting them at all."

Miss Bernadette smiled. "Ah, I see."

That particular sealing spell from Valerie was designed to interfere with a spell at the moment of its formation, effectively breaking apart the magic circle before the intended spell could fully manifest.

However, there was a limitation to what she could accomplish against Bernadette.

Because they were both using True Magic, neither of them was directly determining the full strength of their spells through their own mana reserves.

Their magic drew directly from the natural mana permeating the environment, allowing both women to channel it at essentially the same level.

As a result, their spells were evenly matched.

Valerie could therefore disrupt Bernadette’s magic circle, but she lacked the overwhelming force necessary to maintain a continuous hold over it.

She wasn’t overpowering Bernadette’s magic and maintaining the seal through superior strength. She was simply matching it closely enough to disrupt the spell before the resulting clash consumed both magic circles.

That was why Valerie’s own magic circle would crumble immediately afterward.

In practical terms, Valerie could prevent Bernadette from completing a spell, but she couldn’t maintain her hold to overpower her outright; which in that case would continually cancel any new attempts without needing Valerie to cast anew

Right then, Bernadette chose a smarter method with her approach.

She threw right hand behind her back while extending the other toward Valerie. Two magic circles appeared simultaneously, one forming before each of her palms.

Valerie focused on the one before her, using the sealing spell to interfering with the magic circle before Bernadette could complete the spell.

The circle broke apart and dissipated. But Valerie couldn’t do the same to the second one quickly enough.

By the time she turned her attention toward it, Bernadette had already completed the spell.

Her right arm, which she had held behind her back, suddenly thrust forward, releasing the space-element spell that had been prepared.

It was a spell that condensed space into a nearly invisible spherical mass before shooting toward Valerie.

The air around the projectile appeared distorted as it traveled, the surrounding space warping and wobbling around its path.

Valerie’s eyes widened. She couldn’t directly seal a spell that had already formed completely, so she reacted differently to this attack.

"Seal Gravity."

The sealing spell activated around her, instantly nullifying the effect of gravity on her body.

Valerie was propelled upward as result, narrowly avoiding the approaching sphere as it passed beneath her.

But Bernadette’s attack did not end there as another space-element spell followed almost immediately.

This time, the space around the Hemilton began to fold inward.

Valerie, still suspended in midair, noticed the distortion closing around her and quickly followed with a counter.

"Seal Space."

The sealing magic enclosed the immediate space around her in a confined area extending roughly 10 inches from her body.

The two spells collided and contradicted in their effects.

Bernadette’s magic attempted to compress the space surrounding Valerie, forcing the distance around her to collapse inward.

Valerie’s sealing magic, meanwhile, locked that same space in place, preventing it from being manipulated.

Neither effect could establish dominance over the other.

The conflicting spell principles met at equal strength, and once again, the result was cancellation.

The warped space around Valerie abruptly dispersed, leaving her suspended in the air as both magic effects collapsed.

Bernadette was still smiling as she studied Valerie. "So you can only focus on a magic circle once you can actually see it forming?"

Valerie smiled in return. "You caught me, Miss Bernadette."

The smile on Bernadette’s face widened.

The next moment, the two women clashed again.

Their magic filled the hillside as Valerie’s sealing spells repeatedly intercepted Bernadette’s space magic. Bernadette, in turn, began varying the way she cast her spells, forcing Valerie to react to them as quickly as possible.

Pan and Nathan watched from a distance, neither showing much outward reaction. Still, both paid close attention as the two women fought evenly without giving the other an easy opening.

The exchange continued for several minutes.

Eventually, however, the battle reached its conclusion.

Valerie was just about to form another magic circle when she suddenly sensed a surge of mana approaching from behind.

Her eyes widened.

She immediately tried to cast her sealing spell, but stopped almost at once, realizing that it was already too late.

A massive mass of condensed space tore toward her from behind, although it stopped before it struck at her.

Bernadette then lowered her hand. "You lost."

They were both breathing heavily by then, their hair disheveled from the prolonged battle.

Valerie turned toward her, still trying to understand what had happened. "When did you prepare that spell? How did you get it behind me?"

Then the realization came as a memory flashed through her mind.

Earlier during the battle, Bernadette had cast a space-element spell toward her.

Valerie had flew to the side, and the attack appeared to have past harmlessly; leading her to assume that she had dodged it.

But she hadn’t.

The spell had been designed to take a curved trajectory.

Bernadette’s spell carried an effect to warp the space around its path, causing the attack to bend away from its original direction and eventually approach Valerie from behind.

Because the spell had never followed a straightforward trajectory, Valerie had mistaken its apparent miss for a successful evasion.

Her eyes widened slightly as she finally understood. "Oh, I see now."

A smile appeared on her face as she raised both hands in surrender.

"I concede."
