Andrea felt a dreadful sense of death the instant the Therizon’s soul attack struck her, but it wasn’t enough to even slow her down. She twisted around the falling ice boulder and narrowly avoided its path, allowing the Therizon’s massive beak to crash into it instead.
The boulder shattered between its jaws, but when the fragments scattered through the air, Andrea was nowhere to be seen.
Damien made his move.
Thick miasma erupted from his body, spreading through the hollow ice abyss before rapidly gathering around him. The shape of an Eidolon began to form from the dark mass, its horns emerging first as the miasma twisted and condensed into a familiar monstrous figure.
Then a roar shook the hollow abyss.
The undead Priest emerged from the miasma with his ritual staff already in hand. Without hesitation, he swung it down with enough force to make the air tremble.
The staff smashed into the Therizon’s head.
Its enormous head was knocked violently to the side, its beak scraping against the surrounding ice as its body lurched from the impact.
Andrea suddenly descended from above.
She had used the opening to fall toward the Therizon, reaching out and grabbing one of the long feathers protruding from its head. Using it to control her descent, she swung herself around its massive body and prepared to strike.
At that exact moment, Damien launched himself from his ice boulder. The frozen chunk shot away behind him as he hurtled through the air, his black axe already raised in both hands, ready to bury its blade into the Therizon’s enormous body.
But the Therizon wasn’t going to let either of them make contact. Its enormous wings suddenly spread outward, filling the hollow abyss and blocking out what little light remained above them.
Then it flapped with all its might.
A violent gust exploded through the abyss.
The sheer force of the wind threw Andrea completely off balance and forced her to abandon her attack. She was sent tumbling through the air before managing to land against the side of the Therizon, her boots scraping across its feathers as she struggled to keep herself from falling.
The Therizon immediately retaliated.
Its sharp talons snapped toward the undead Priest.
The ritual staff was durable enough to withstand the impact, but the force behind the attack was overwhelming. The undead Priest was struck and sent flying through the abyss, his body disappearing into the darkness.
"Priesty!"
Damien shot forward.
Black miasma erupted from his body and shot in every direction. Dozens of figures began emerging from the darkness, their undead bodies forming from the miasma before immediately latching onto the Therizon from all sides.
They grabbed its feathers, legs, and body, pulling with all their strength as they attempted to drag the massive creature down.
Andrea finally found her footing, she drove her fist into the Therizon’s body. The impact was powerful enough to make the enormous creature screech in pain.
Damien’s eyes constricted as he realised they were about to hit the ground. There was no time to think about another plan. He launched himself in Andrea’s direction.
Without saying a word, Damien reached her and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her tightly against him as they continued plummeting toward the depths.
Then he dismissed all of his undead.
The creatures vanished into black miasma, leaving the two of them alone with the Therizon as the ground rushed toward them.
Damien braced himself for the impact.
The ice beneath them shattered the instant they struck it. Their bodies tore through the frozen layer alongside the Therizon, fragments of ice exploding in every direction as they continued falling.
For a few terrifying seconds, there was nothing beneath them but darkness. Then they finally collided violently with the final layer.
The impact shook the entire frozen abyss. For a long while, no figures emerged from the settling snow.
The abyss remained strangely quiet, with only faint particles of ice drifting through the air. Then two figures slowly emerged from beneath the snow. It was Damien and Andrea, both battered from the impact but still standing.
Faint light was reaching out from somewhere below them, illuminating the darkness with a strange, otherworldly glow. Damien already knew where it was coming from. The plant ecosystem beneath the frozen layers was still alive.
He looked around, searching for the massive creature that had dragged them into the depths.
"The Therizon is gone... So is the Chief."
Andrea immediately noticed a blood trail stretching across the ice. It was fresh enough to stand out against the frozen surface, and more importantly, it appeared to continue down past where they had landed.
Her eyes followed it toward a hole leading even deeper into the underground ecosystem.
"Come on, the Chief is down there."
Andrea didn’t hesitate. She hurried toward the opening and, after reaching its edge, jumped in without a second thought.
Damien, on the other hand, felt completely helpless. He stared into the dark hole for a moment, watching the faint glow from the ecosystem below illuminate the depths.
"Sure, just go ahead and jump towards the glowing light. There might not be any more freakish monsters or anything."
His thoughts were dripping with sarcasm, but Andrea was already gone. The memories of discovering the Therizon still gave Damien chills. He hadn’t forgotten how that creature had emerged from beneath the ice, nor how easily it had thrown both of them into chaos.
Unfortunately, standing around wasn’t going to accomplish anything. Damien sighed and jumped after her.
The underground ecosystem was far bigger and brighter than the one Damien and Vincent had discovered earlier. The faint glow of the plants illuminated the vast cavern, revealing countless varieties of vegetation growing freely beneath the frozen world above.
There were so many different types of plants and trees that Damien felt like he could spend centuries cataloguing them all and still never come close to documenting everything hidden down here. It was an entire world beneath the ice.
Damien eventually found Andrea. She hadn’t found the Chief yet, but she had certainly found something.
Ahead of her stood a frozen animal-skin tent, its surface stiffened by the cold. Several rugs had been spread around it, arranged as though someone had once used the area as a living space.
But what caught Damien’s attention most was the fire.
It was still burning.
The flames danced steadily despite the fact that the wood feeding them was completely frozen solid.
