Vergil stepped back through the portal to Sparda, the weight of the last few hours’ events resting silently on his shoulders. From Nyx’s unexpected visit to the information Seris provided about the Outer Sepulcher, the conversation with Pandora, and the meeting with Freya, Hela, and Hercules... his mind had barely rested for a single moment. For the first time in a long while, he didn’t want to think about Helheim, Tartarus, or wars between pantheons.
He just wanted to see his mother.
It was a simple thought.
Almost childish.
Ever since Sepphirothy had fully regained her sanity, those small moments where they simply talked—without discussing battles—had become surprisingly important to him. She was one of the few people whose presence could truly quiet his mind for a few minutes.
Maybe some tea.
Maybe just sitting there, listening to her complain about one of the women in the castle.
Anything would do.
He walked through the castle’s long corridors with a calm stride.
The place was bustling, as always. Demonic servants walked by carrying documents, knights trained in the lower courtyard, demon children played in the gardens, and in the distance, the metallic ring of weapons being forged echoed from the city’s industrial district.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
Vergil walked to the inner gardens.
Empty.
He went to the library.
Empty as well.
The room where Sepphirothy usually had tea while gazing out at the lake.
Nothing.
He raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Curious..."
He kept walking.
When he reached the grand hall, he found Viviane organizing a stack of documents on a massive table, while Vanny and Rize were whispering to each other near a window.
All three looked up when they noticed his arrival.
"King." Viviane smiled politely.
Vanny broke into a huge grin.
"Vergil!" Rize smiled too, gently swaying the various black ribbons adorning her hair.
Vergil approached them.
"Have you seen my mother?"
The three of them exchanged glances.
Viviane was the first to answer.
"Lady Sepphirothy?"
"Yes."
She shook her head.
"No."
Vergil looked at Vanny.
The cow-demon scratched her head.
"Not me, either."
Rize crossed her arms.
"I saw her yesterday."
"Yesterday."
"Yes."
"And today?"
Rize thought for a few seconds.
"...No."
Vergil kept looking at them.
This was strange.
His mother rarely disappeared from the castle without telling someone.
Especially now.
She loved that place too much to simply leave.
"Did she mention anything?"
Viviane answered first.
"Nothing."
"Training?"
"None."
"A mission?"
"Not that either."
Vergil remained silent for a few seconds.
Vanny raised a hand.
"Maybe she’s with Lady Lilith."
Vergil looked at her.
It was possible.
The two of them often disappeared together when they wanted to discuss old matters regarding the Demon Realm or simply tease each other.
"Thanks."
He turned and continued walking.
Rize watched his back as he walked away.
"...He looks worried."
Viviane nodded discreetly.
"I thought so too."
Vergil found Lilith’s room empty.
He went to her laboratory.
Nothing.
He stopped by the balcony where she used to admire the Demon Realm’s crimson sky.
Also empty.
He began to find the situation truly odd.
"Lilith..."
It didn’t seem like a coincidence anymore.
His mother missing.
Lilith missing.
Neither of them had told a single soul. He mentally ran through all the possibilities.
A mission?
Unlikely.
A visit?
No.
Training?
Maybe.
But...
Where?
That was when he heard heavy footsteps echoing down the hallway.
Vergil turned his head.
Neberius was walking in the opposite direction.
Or rather...
She was practically marching.
Her expression was a very specific mix of irritation, humiliation, and the urge to murder someone.
Her hair was completely disheveled.
There was dust on her clothes.
One of her horns looked slightly chipped.
Her left arm bore several purplish bruises.
She didn’t even notice Vergil at first.
She was just walking along, muttering to herself.
"...wretched woman..."
"...crazy..."
"...completely clueless..."
Vergil frowned slightly.
"Neberius."
She looked up.
"...King."
She tried to keep walking.
Vergil took just half a step to the side.
"What happened?"
"It was nothing."
She tried to walk past him.
Vergil gently held her arm.
"Neberius."
She sighed deeply.
"It was a training session."
"With whom?"
Silence.
She looked away.
Vergil waited.
After a few seconds, she answered through gritted teeth.
"...With that wretched woman."
Vergil kept his gaze on her.
"Who?"
Neberius slowly turned her face.
"Your mother."
Silence.
Vergil blinked once.
"...My mother."
"Yes."
"Sepphirothy."
"YES!"
She practically exploded.
"Her!"
Vergil calmly observed the bruises scattered across her body.
"..."
Neberius took a deep breath.
"I thought she wanted to train."
"And she did."
"No."
She shook her head violently.
"She wanted to commit crimes."
Vergil remained completely neutral.
"What happened?"
Neberius ran her hand through her hair, thoroughly annoyed.
"She showed up at the Abyss earlier today."
"The Abyss..."
"Yes."
The Abyss.
The gigantic region beneath Sparda used by the strongest demons for large-scale training.
Practically anything was permitted there.
Mountains destroyed.
Continents reshaped.
Absurd explosions.
It was the only place in the Demon Realm durable enough to withstand monsters of that level.
Neberius continued.
"She just showed up."
"Did she say anything?"
"’Neberius, let’s train.’"
Vergil kept listening.
"I agreed."
She took a deep breath.
"It was my biggest mistake."
Vergil almost smiled.
Almost.
"The training started normally."
"Five minutes later..."
Neberius slowly closed her eyes.
"...she tore off half a mountain."
Vergil remained silent.
"..."
"With a single punch." "..."
"And she asked why I was taking it easy."
Vergil discreetly rubbed his forehead.
Neberius went on.
"Then she smiled."
"The ’mom’ smile?"
"The psychopath smile."
Vergil knew exactly which one.
Neberius pointed to her own face.
"After that, all I remember is violence."
"..."
"A lot of violence."
"..."
"A lot."
She held up a finger.
"You know when someone starts a sparring session by saying, ’Let’s take it easy’?"
Vergil nodded.
"She did exactly that."
"Then she tried to crush me with a mountain range."
"..."
"SHE THREW A MOUNTAIN AT ME."
Vergil looked at her calmly.
"You dodged it."
"Of course I dodged it!"
She looked almost offended.
"I’m strong!"
"But she just..."
Neberius spread her arms wide.
"...kept going."
She started counting off on her fingers.
"Punches."
"Knees."
"Kicks."
"Elbows."
"Charges."
"Throws."
"She literally hit me WITH ANOTHER MOUNTAIN."
Vergil finally let out a soft sigh.
"How long did it last?"
"Two hours."
"..."
"Two."
She pointed to her chest.
"I fought seriously."
Vergil believed it.
Neberius was absurdly powerful.
Far above most Demon Lords.
"She didn’t even breathe hard."
Vergil closed his eyes for a moment.
That...
That really sounded like his mother.
Neberius kept complaining.
"She beat the crap out of me."
"..."
"Then she praised me."
"..."
"Then she asked if I wanted to keep going."
Vergil remained completely serious.
"And you?"
"I RAN!"
She answered immediately.
"I value my life!" Vergil took a deep breath.
Neberius crossed her arms.
"That woman is completely insane."
She looked directly at him.
"Go to the Abyss and see for yourself."
"Your mom is a lunatic."
She yanked her arm free from his grasp.
"And I don’t want to hear a word about her for the next forty-eight hours."
Without waiting for a reply, she kept walking down the hallway, still muttering.
"...mountain..."
"...who uses a mountain..."
"...psychopath..."
Vergil stood still, watching her disappear.
After a few seconds...
He let out a soft, nasal chuckle.
Very subtle.
His mother really was back to her old self.
Training like that...
It was exactly the sort of thing Sepphirothy would do.
Especially after being imprisoned for so many years.
She was probably just reveling in the freedom of her own body.
Still...
There was something odd.
Neberius wasn’t weak.
Quite the opposite.
She was one of Sparda’s strongest generals.
If she had backed off...
Then his mother really wasn’t holding back.
Vergil slowly turned his face toward the hallway’s massive window.
Outside...
Far away.
Almost on the horizon.
A gigantic column of dust could be seen slowly rising into the scarlet sky.
The ground vibrated at nearly imperceptible intervals.
...Boom.
A few seconds later...
...BOOOOM.
A distant shockwave made the castle windows rattle slightly.
Vergil kept watching.
"...Still training."
It was impressive.
Neberius had fled at least twenty minutes ago.
And Sepphirothy was still out there destroying some part of the Abyss.
Likely all on her own.
He let out a long sigh.
"That explains why Lilith disappeared."
Lilith was certainly there.
Watching.
Or trying to stop her mother from completely reshaping the geography of the Demon Realm.
Although...
Knowing Lilith...
She was probably laughing.
Vergil began to walk again.
His destination was obvious now.
The Abyss.
He needed to find out exactly what was happening before Sepphirothy decided to use an entire continent as a training dummy.
Behind him, another tremor quietly rippled through the castle.
Several servants glanced up at the ceiling.
No one seemed particularly concerned.
One of the soldiers simply remarked calmly:
"...Lady Sepphirothy is training again."
Another replied with complete nonchalance:
"Let’s just hope she doesn’t hurl another chunk of the Abyss this way."
Vergil heard this as he kept walking.
His only thought was a silent sigh.
"She’s definitely... back to her old self."
Vergil crossed the intervening space in a single step.
The Abyss had no sky, no ground, and no sense of direction. It was a reality composed of infinite layers of demonic energy—an ocean of living darkness where corrupted concepts had accumulated since the birth of the worlds. There, mountains sprouted from spiritual corpses, rivers flowed with liquid curses, and storms carried the fragments of souls that would never find rest.
Even for a Demon King, that place was never comfortable.
As soon as he arrived, a wave of demonic pressure washed over him.
It wasn’t hostile.
It was... organized.
Vergil frowned.
"...What the hell..."
Then he saw it.
Far ahead, a massive region of the Abyss was simply... vanishing.
It didn’t explode.
It wasn’t sliced apart.
It wasn’t sealed away.
It simply ceased to exist.
Millions of tons of utterly corrupted demonic matter were being reduced to absolute nothingness, as if an invisible eraser were wiping away a drawing. At the center of that phenomenon stood Sepphirothy.
She remained standing there, wearing a simple black dress; her long silver hair swayed slowly as she surveyed the destruction with a completely serene expression.
Hundreds of magic circles floated around her.
Runes.
Ancient symbols.
Demonic constellations.
With every movement of her hand, another region vanished from existence.
There was no violence.
There was no strain.
It was almost... elegant.
Beside her, perched on a massive black stone, Lilith idly swung one leg while chewing on something.
No.
She wasn’t chewing.
She was...
Eating energy.
Gigantic streams of pure demonic energy poured from the regions Sepphirothy had erased and converged upon Lilith, who simply absorbed them through her mouth like someone savoring a sweet.
She chewed.
Swallowed.
Breathed out in satisfaction.
Another stream arrived.
She repeated the process.
"..."
Vergil stared at the scene for a few seconds.
His mother was destroying entire kilometers of the Abyss.
Lilith was turning it all into sustenance.
The two worked together as if tending a garden.
He landed behind them.
"What is happening?"
They both answered at the exact same time.
"Cleanup."
