The first warning did not come from Nivara, Crymsaria, or Qliphoth.
It came from the sky itself.
An excruciating sound tore through the lower regions of Yggdrasil, so deep that for a moment Vergil had difficulty telling whether he was truly hearing it or feeling it through his bones. It sounded like the impossible combination of a colossal creature roaring, millions of tons of wood snapping at the same time, and some dimensional structure being twisted beyond what it was meant to endure. Reginleif immediately covered her ears, Brynhildr raised her head, and nearly all of the unconscious Valkyries shuddered together.
Above the gigantic crater, Yggdrasil's roots began to move.
They were not small roots. Some stretched for kilometers and were thick enough to support entire cities. One of them broke far above the nest and fell while slowly spinning, followed by others, tearing away smaller pieces during the descent. Their size distorted perception; they only seemed to be falling slowly because they were absurdly enormous. When Vergil calculated their trajectory, he realized that much of the crater would be buried in less than a minute.
"Crymsaria."
The dragon was already looking at the sky. For the first time since entering that territory, the smile had completely vanished from her face. The red energy in her eyes intensified as she followed something far beyond the falling roots.
"She's coming."
Vergil did not ask who.
His demonic energy exploded through the nest.
Black miasma surged across the crater like a wave and wrapped around every unconscious Valkyrie. There was no time to carry them individually, organize groups, or check who was in better condition. Vergil simply took all of them with telekinesis. Hundreds of bodies began rising at once, first those at the top of the pile, then those buried beneath, while his perception identified trapped wings, bent limbs, and warriors partially buried under their sisters. He separated each one with precision before moving them, preventing the evacuation itself from causing injuries.
Brynhildr widened her eyes when the space around them filled with her sisters floating in the air.
"Vergil, there are more than—"
"I know."
He widened the cut leading to Helheim even further.
The rift created by Yamato expanded from a few meters to dozens, becoming a gigantic opening between the two places. On the other side, the frozen stones of the realm of the dead appeared like a vertical window in space. Vergil pushed the first layer of Valkyries through it and immediately pulled more from the bottom of the crater. Demonic energy entered each body during the passage, gradually destroying the trance that kept them unconscious. It would not wake all of them instantly, especially those who had remained there for weeks, but he made sure there was enough energy for their bodies and souls to begin recovering as soon as they reached Helheim.
A root fell.
The impact occurred kilometers away and still made the entire crater jump.
The shockwave tore through the nest, raising a wall of gray dust and hurling gigantic bones in every direction. Vergil did not interrupt the process. He created a demonic barrier around the Valkyries, redirected the debris, and continued sending entire groups through the portal while Brynhildr and Reginleif did their best to help those beginning to wake.
Another root broke above them.
Crymsaria looked at the sky again, and this time her expression grew heavier.
"Vergil."
"I heard it."
"No. She is actually coming."
That was enough.
Vergil pulled the last Valkyries from the deepest part of the crater, quickly checked the signatures, and confirmed none had been left behind. The tangled spiritual threads that had been draining the warriors still remained beneath the nest, penetrating even deeper regions of Yggdrasil, but he had no time to investigate them now. Saving them was the priority.
Reginleif crossed the portal while helping two unconscious sisters. Brynhildr was the last to remain.
"Did everyone make it through?"
"Everyone who was here."
Brynhildr nodded and turned to look at the sky.
"Then let's go."
Vergil placed one hand against her back.
And pushed her.
Brynhildr crossed the portal without any warning and almost stumbled on the other side. She immediately turned around, surprised and irritated, finding Vergil still standing inside the nest.
"What are you doing?"
"Focus on the Valkyries' recovery. I already put energy into them so they can wake up." Vergil looked over his shoulder as another series of roots began falling. "I'll take care of Niddrog."
Brynhildr stepped toward the passage.
"Don't be an idiot. If that presence really is the true Niddrog, then you shouldn't—"
Vergil drew Yamato.
"Vergil!"
The blade cut horizontally through the passage itself.
The portal closed.
Brynhildr disappeared along with Helheim, and the space in front of him became nothing more than the dark, gigantic interior of the nest once again. Vergil remained still for several seconds, Yamato still in his hand, until another crash came from the upper regions.
The presences around him reorganized.
Nivara appeared on his left, returning to her human form, while Crymsaria emerged on the right. Itharine and Qliphoth remained farther back, both looking toward the same point above the roots. Nivara's seriousness was enough to say that any hope of simply avoiding a confrontation was gone.
"We're going to have to fight," she admitted.
Vergil sighed and sheathed Yamato.
"Naturally."
He opened all six wings and left the bottom of the crater.
The next movement was nearly vertical. Vergil flew through the interior of the nest, crossing natural columns of roots, dodging enormous pieces of wood that continued falling, and rising hundreds of meters with every beat of his wings. Nivara and Crymsaria followed without difficulty, while Qliphoth and Itharine disappeared momentarily to follow through their own spiritual connection to him.
When Vergil finally passed the upper edge of the nest, he realized that what they had meant by "she's coming" did not necessarily mean Niddrog was moving directly toward them.
She was simply close enough for her existence to dominate the entire environment.
Vergil stopped in midair.
For several seconds, he did nothing but stare.
Far above the dunes formed from Yggdrasil's dead leaves, wedged between some of the largest roots and the lower portions of the World Tree's trunk, was Niddrog.
The real one.
Now he understood why Qliphoth had found the paw crossing the Helheim rift strange.
Whatever had attacked Brynhildr definitely had not been Niddrog.
It was impossible.
The true creature was far too large.
Even considering the dragons Vergil had fought before, Niddrog existed in an entirely different category of scale. Her black body resembled a living mountain range wrapped around portions of Yggdrasil. Enormous scales overlapped like plates of a fortress, covering her neck, torso, and limbs. Spines ran across her back in irregular rows, some straight, others curved, creating an aggressive silhouette that made the creature appear covered in countless blades.
Her head was long and narrow, protected by a natural crown of black horns sweeping backward. Two main horns grew above the skull, while smaller ones followed the jawline and neck. Her wings were too vast to remain fully open in that space; black membranes streaked with glowing blue veins remained partially folded between Yggdrasil's branches and roots. Tiny points of light spread across them like stars seen through a moonless night.
But the strangest part was the energy.
Blue currents moved constantly across Niddrog.
They did not resemble electricity. They were streams of power entering and leaving her body, winding between scales and roots like luminous rivers. Yggdrasil's energy was devoured along with the wood and then circulated through the creature in a completely different form, transformed into something draconic, corrosive, and absurdly dense. Near the center of her chest was an even more intense concentration, a kind of core wrapped in violet and orange tones, pulsing slowly beneath the black plates.
And Niddrog was eating.
Vergil had expected a creature on alert, furious over the disappearance of the Valkyries or the deaths of her descendants.
But she was absurdly focused on something else.
Her enormous claws pinned one of Yggdrasil's roots against the trunk while her jaws tore entire sections from the primordial wood. Each bite removed an amount of matter equivalent to a mountain. Niddrog chewed with an almost offensive calm, apparently more interested in continuing her meal than in anything happening several kilometers below.
A massive portion of the root broke inside her mouth.
Niddrog tilted her head.
Chewed.
Swallowed.
Then pulled more.
Vergil watched in silence.
Crymsaria approached from his right. Nivara came from the left. Neither of them looked particularly comfortable now that they could observe the true Niddrog without obstruction.
Vergil crossed his arms.
"What are the chances of killing that thing?"
"None," Nivara and Crymsaria answered at the same time.
Vergil slowly turned his head toward them.
Nivara kept a serious expression. "I mean you in your current condition. Even with all of us working together, killing Niddrog here, while she is directly connected to Yggdrasil, is not a realistic possibility."
Crymsaria agreed. "Injure her? Yes. Tear pieces off? Also. Annoy her until she wants to turn this whole region into hell? Easily. But kill her permanently?" She looked toward the colossal dragon chewing another portion of the root. "No."
Vergil looked back at Niddrog.
The creature still had not paid attention to him.
He thought about the Valkyries already evacuated, the offspring scattered among the roots, the threads draining energy inside the nest, and Frey, who remained missing somewhere beyond the normal routes. Starting a battle to the death against that thing would not only be unnecessary, it would probably destroy any chance of calmly investigating the rest.
Vergil shrugged.
"Well, then we'll have to tame her."
