**Chapter 262**
The church left in the same order they had arrived.
Priest first. Paladin second, gold catching the window as he turned. The nun last. She rose off Elara’s furniture, and that ass came with her, cloth finally forced to admit there was a body under it. Soft eyes over the veil. No word. No glance at the servant standing on Elara’s right.
The quest window sat at the edge of my sight. I didn’t open it. I was hesitant to after reading the contents.
Double Fuck.
Valeria saw them to the door. Steward talk. Rooms. Ties to the house. The story Elara had given them to repeat in the halls. When the latch clicked, Elara still had not looked at me.
“Valeria.”
“My lady.”
“Leave us.”
No reason. No softening. Valeria bowed, silver bun steady, and went out the way she always did. The office got larger by one body and quieter by a lot more than that.
Elara waited until the footsteps died.
Then she looked at me.
“Sit.”
I sat. Not across from her like a guest. To the side, where a man of my standing sat when he had been told to.
She did not waste a greeting.
“Your physique,” she said. “The church has given it a word. I want yours.”
Sharp. Not frightened. Not kind. After *Demon*, she wanted a line she could use.
I had already decided how much of this room was allowed to know.
“I awakened,” I said. “That was when it changed. The… part other men do not have. It became what it is now. It needs mana. If I do not use it, it is inconvenient. If I do, the liquid that comes out carries mana.”
Elara’s eyes did not move off my face.
“And the women.”
“Their levels rise. Circles. Cores. Recovery. That is what I have seen. I do not have a book for it. I did not wake with an explanation. I found out by performing various experiments with various people.”
“That is all.”
It wasn’t a question.
“That is all I can stand on,” I said. “The rest is guesswork. As far as you have seen it work, it has not become something else. The last change I can name is this: if the liquid goes in the rear hole, the potential of the woman can rise. Checked only with women.”
I added the last part before her mind could wander somewhere stupid. I did not need her testing theories on a man because a priest had said *Demon*.
Elara went silent.
She was not a woman who loved the church. I had watched her sit through their gold and their classified words and give them rooms instead of a hunt. That did not mean she would burn her own future to protect a servant with a strange body. Houses needed heirs. The goddess Kaya still owned that part of the world in every mouth that mattered.
Zara had had sex with me. Elara had also been a part of the pleasant process. Cassandra had lived through it and enjoyed it too. For Elara and Zara, it wasn’t a problem, since they had both given birth to four children each. Their count was up.
For Cassandra, it would be different. Very different. She had not given birth to a child yet. If I had cut her from the goddess by having a connection with her, there would be no pretty cover story that fixed it.
Elara said it without dressing it up.
“Cassandra has not borne a child.”
“Yes, my lady.”
“If your method has severed her from Kaya, I need to know now. Not after the church starts testing my staff. I will decide what this house keeps. I will not decide it blind.”
No concern in the tone. No mother performance. Just the fact. She needed to know who to choose.
I could have told her the pregnancy windows I had been declining since the first time the system asked. I could have told her the temple was not the only door. I could have told her about Sandra, Martha, and Rayla. All of them were already pregnant.
But I said nothing of that. I picked the line that would move her and not the ones that would hang me.
But she didn’t want all that. She didn’t want assurances. She needed proof. And only one way to do it.
“What if I told you I have discovered another method for children to be born?”
I expected her face to change.
It didn’t.
What came instead was mana. A wave of mana enough to push me back. It wasn’t even her giving it her all.
It left her like a blade leaving a sheath. The air in the office went tight. Sound flattened. The windows closed. A barrier sat down over the room so complete that even the church members in the estate would have heard furniture and nothing else.
She had heard the weight of it before I had finished hearing myself say it.
I shut up.
I sat there with my own sentence in my mouth and let it stay there. Another method. In a world where children came from a goddess and a temple. In a room that had just hosted men who burned people for less. Such a statement was nothing but going against the goddess. I did not fill the quiet because the quiet was her measuring whether I was a tool or a fire.
The silence stretched.
Then Elara asked, “How?”
Phew.
That was not permission to empty the whole bag. That was a door cracked. I took the crack.
I told her enough to make the shape, not the lecture. What the method needed. What it did not take from Kaya. What it would ask of a woman’s body that the temple had never asked.
I did not put the explanation on the table as a speech she would have to sit through twice.
When I was done, I asked the only part that mattered.
“Would you be willing to give me nine months, my lady?”
