Wen Qingye and Fang Yu were assigned to the South Wing. The South Wing had the fewest people, and Fang Yu was staying in the room right next to Wen Qingye’s.
KNOCK KNOCK!
Wen Qingye hadn’t even sat down when he heard a knock at the door. He had no choice but to walk back and open it.
"Brother Wen, haha," Fang Yu said with a grin, looking at Wen Qingye.
Wen Qingye asked, "What is it? Do you need something?"
"Not really. I just feel like this is all a bit strange. I can’t quite wrap my head around this Ghost-Carried Coffin business," Fang Yu said, frowning.
Wen Qingye nodded. "Come in and we’ll talk."
After the two sat down, Wen Qingye said softly, "You must be curious why these Little Ghosts have appeared, right? Normally, a Divine Soul without a body would either dissipate or enter Reincarnation. So why is there a Ghost-Carried Coffin?"
Fang Yu nodded emphatically. "Exactly! That’s the part I can’t figure out. Are the Divine Souls carrying the coffin somehow special?"
Wen Qingye smiled faintly and shook his head. "There’s something you’re forgetting. Certain things can prevent a Divine Soul from disappearing."
"What’s that?" Fang Yu asked, puzzled.
Wen Qingye said softly, "Corpse Ghosts!"
"Corpse Ghosts?" Fang Yu’s eyes widened when he heard Wen Qingye’s words, and then realization dawned. "I get it! It must be that when these Martial Artists died, they held on to a trace of resentment that wouldn’t dissipate. It eventually formed an obsession, turning them into the Corpse Ghosts carrying this coffin."
Wen Qingye nodded. ’If my guess is right, the coffin bearers are Martial Artists with profound cultivation who were unwilling to be reincarnated when they died. Just as their Divine Souls were about to dissipate, a final thread of obsession allowed them to re-enter their bodies, turning them into Corpse Ghosts.’
"Could the coffin be some kind of treasure?" Fang Yu asked, his eyes lighting up.
Wen Qingye nodded. "It’s possible. The coffin’s material might be unique and could be used to refine Magical Artifacts, or there could be something else extraordinary inside."
"Brother Wen, do you think those Divine Souls will appear again tonight?"
"They should. We just have to wait patiently."
"Right. I need to try my best to stay awake. I can’t be as dead to the world as I was when meditating on the mountain."
.......
The moonlight was like flowing water, bringing a sense of tranquility to one’s Heart Spirit.
In the hazy night sky, a dark shadow, seemingly slow yet actually swift, flew over Liz City. At that moment, a patch of thick, dark clouds slowly drifted over.
Five figures in purple robes, like phantoms, carried an enormous coffin. It was about ten feet long and three feet wide, its matte black surface sending a chill through the heart in the dark night sky.
The coffin didn’t seem to be made of wood, but rather carved from a single block of black stone. It was heavy, eerie, and ghastly, yet possessed a majestic and imposing aura.
Five purple-robed figures carried a coffin, soaring through the endless night sky.
Upon seeing this, ordinary people would, for some unknown reason, feel a pull on their Divine Souls. They’d instinctively feel as if they were being dragged into the Nine Netherworld, causing them to become dizzy and tremble with fear.
What in the world was inside that coffin? And why would these five Divine Souls fly out with it in the middle of the night?
At this moment, even the Martial Artists hiding in the shadows felt a chill run down their spines.
Wen Qingye was currently sitting cross-legged in meditation. Sensing the coffin’s appearance, his eyes snapped open. His body moved like a flash of lightning, rushing in the direction the coffin had appeared.
Before long, despite the late hour, a large number of Martial Artists had gathered around the area where the coffin appeared. Everyone was staring up at the five purple figures in the sky.
’These five purple figures are no simple matter,’ Wen Qingye thought as he watched the coffin above. ’It seems they’ve used the coffin, or something inside it, to coalesce their bodies. They are already Corpse Ghosts. Their cultivation is comparable to that of a Martial Artist at the Peak of Yin Yang Realm, and their obsession has become the instinct to carry this coffin. I wonder if there’s any Coffin Fungus inside.’
Coffin Fungus is a type of Heavenly and Earthly Treasure formed from the continuous accumulation of Yin Qi and death energy in an extremely dense environment. This kind of treasure is incredibly heavy with Yin Qi, yet it contains enormous energy. It can be purified with Pill Fire and is exceptionally valuable for refining pills. It typically grows inside coffins.
Dark clouds swirled in, seeming to blot out the full moon and plunge the sky into darkness. The five purple figures carrying the coffin always remained floating in front of the clouds. Their presence was vast and hellish, their aura boundless and exceptionally eerie. The hems of their purple robes trailed far behind them in the wind, making them look like the life-reaping White Impermanence, or perhaps solitary Fierce Ghosts.
"What on earth is inside that coffin?" Liu Xuan murmured, her eyes fixed on the sight above.
"Eldest Princess, in my opinion, there’s definitely nothing good in there," said a middle-aged man in a white brocade robe with slightly graying hair, his brows knitted. "This coffin came from that tomb in the Chaotic Tomb Ridge. The Yin Qi in Chaotic Wind Ridge is so heavy because it’s the place where several surrounding countries—like our Jinfeng, Dayan, Shangyou, and the Wei Kingdom—dispose of corpses. This thing is ninety-nine percent a creature of pure yin and evil."
This man was Youx Dong, a general of the Jinfeng Ancient Country. His cultivation was profound, second to none among those present.
Liu Xuan nodded and said quietly, "I thought so too. That’s why I released the news, to have experts from the surrounding countries come and deal with the tomb in the Chaotic Tomb Ridge. It’s just... there are bound to be some wondrous items in the coffin and the tomb. I’d be rather resentful if someone else were to get them."
Youx Dong said helplessly, "But there are too many experts here this time, and most of the Imperial Court’s masters haven’t arrived. I can’t possibly keep them all in check."
Liu Xuan’s eyes brightened as she smiled. "There was no other way. If I had delayed any longer, I was afraid these people would have gotten wind of it and searched the tomb themselves. It doesn’t matter. We’ll just quietly play the part of the fisherman. I can accept getting a share of the spoils."
WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
Just then, someone could no longer hold back and charged toward the coffin.
Wen Qingye could clearly see the cultivation of the coffin bearers, but others couldn’t. The attacker’s cultivation was only at the Sixth Level of Yin Yang Realm; he was rushing up now to gamble everything on one shot.
"Watch out!"
Someone suddenly shouted a warning to the Martial Artist charging the coffin, but it seemed to be too late.
One of the purple figures beside the coffin suddenly flashed a scarlet light from its eyes. With a flick of its sleeve, a torrent of black energy billowed out and shot toward the Martial Artist.
HISS! HISS!
The crowd heard a series of strange hissing sounds. The Martial Artist didn’t even have time to scream before his clothes fluttered to the ground. Not a single bone was left of him.
Silence!
An eerie silence fell over the surroundings.
The person who had just shouted continued, "Everyone, be careful! Don’t attack recklessly! Those five are Corpse Ghosts. Their Divine Souls are nothing but a sliver of obsession that has turned them into puppets. Their cultivation is at the Peak of Yin Yang Realm!"
Wen Qingye couldn’t help but look over. The speaker was a man in his thirties, dressed in a green robe, with an air of righteousness about him. Wen Qingye had a vague impression of him, having seen him at the banquet during the day. He was Wang Hai of the Jinfeng Ancient Country’s Wang Family, and his cultivation was at the Peak of Yin Yang Realm.
