Everyone was startled. Sensing the change in their surroundings, their expressions changed dramatically.
Wen Qingye’s brow furrowed. The two beams of green light felt utterly malevolent, brimming with malice and savagery. They also carried a paralyzing force that sapped one’s strength, leaving them weak-limbed.
But Wen Qingye’s Heart Spirit was incredibly strong—impervious to all evil, capable of severing the intangible. There was no way these two beams of green light could possibly affect him. With a cold snort, he severed the light’s invasive influence.
CRUNCH!
Stone fragments flew through the air as the old man’s body was once again sent flying. He landed on the ground, unconscious. Amidst the swirling debris, a figure seemed to rise.
"Subdue!"
Reacting in a flash, Wen Qingye slashed out mercilessly with his sword.
In that instant, countless sword phantoms seemed to fill the air, surging toward the figure.
CLANG!
The onlookers saw sparks fly; the vicious strike had failed to even cut through its body.
The figure let out a wolf-like shriek. Bending its knees, it launched itself at Wen Qingye like a bolt of lightning. Its arms shot forward, thrusting out like two sharp blades.
The hall was dim, lit only by faint candlelight, but Wen Qingye relied on his sharp instincts and clear vision to make out the figure’s appearance and build.
He wished he hadn’t looked. The sight made his heart leap. This was no person—it was clearly a blackened zombie. Its shriveled flesh was wrinkled into a sunken mass that gleamed with a metallic sheen. Its green eyes had lost all human emotion and reason, retaining only savagery, eeriness, bloodlust, and cruelty. All the evils of the mortal world could be seen within them.
’This is a Green Corpse!’
The Green Corpse’s movements showed none of the expected stiffness; its explosive speed was astonishingly fast. Wen Qingye leaned to one side, shifting dozens of feet away.
The next moment, the hard wall where he had stood was pierced and torn apart. The Green Corpse’s head tilted, its malevolent green eyes locking onto Wen Qingye. It was a Green Corpse created through an artificial process, and the sliver of will left within its body seemed dedicated solely to killing any who dared intrude.
Shedding her usual composure, the woman in black exclaimed, "Heavens! Is that the legendary Green Corpse? Its cultivation must be at the Peak of the Ninth Heaven of the Yin-Yang Realm!"
Though the others didn’t know what a Green Corpse was, they heard the woman in black mention the "Peak of the Ninth Heaven of the Yin-Yang Realm." Moreover, one look was enough to see how savage and evil the creature was. A chill ran down their spines, and they hurriedly backed away.
Wen Qingye, of course, held nothing back. He swung his One Thought Sword in quick succession, unleashing two sharp streams of Sword Qi that shot toward the Green Corpse’s eyes from the left and right. Ever since his Five Elements Body Refining Technique had reached the Third Heaven, his speed and strength had grown by leaps and bounds.
Artificially created zombies usually retain their combat memories, and this Green Corpse was no exception, allowing it to react in a split second. Its desiccated head tilted back slightly, dodging the Sword Qi on the left. The other stream of Sword Qi, due to the target’s movement, missed the eye and slashed across its cheek.
A shower of sparks erupted. A thin gash was torn across the zombie’s cheek, and from between the rotten flesh, a trickle of green blood seemed to ooze out.
’This Green Corpse is truly formidable,’ Wen Qingye thought, having seen everything clearly. ’I used the sharpness of the One Thought Sword combined with seventy percent of my Powerful Qi, yet I only managed to open a small gash.’ When the Sword Qi had struck the Green Corpse’s cheek, a green light had flashed, neutralizing the vast majority of the force.
ROAR!
The Green Corpse, perhaps dazed and enraged by the Sword Qi’s strike, opened its terrifying, foul-smelling maw without a second thought. A ball of green light slowly emerged from the depths of its throat before shooting toward Wen Qingye.
With a leap, Wen Qingye swiftly dodged the green light.
The hall wall was instantly corroded, and the green vapor gave off a nauseating stench.
Seeing its attack thwarted by Wen Qingye, the Green Corpse charged again, its scarlet eyes filled with a murderous light.
Wen Qingye had barely steadied himself when he saw the Green Corpse charging again. His robes billowed as if in a strong wind as Primordial Qi gathered in his arm. He threw a punch, and the ferocious Fist Force coalesced into a great cauldron that descended upon the charging Green Corpse.
CRASH!
Unable to withstand the titanic force of Wen Qingye’s blow, the Green Corpse was slammed heavily into the ground, sinking deep into the floorboards. It let out a series of piercing shrieks.
Seeing his chance, a severe glint flashed in Wen Qingye’s eyes. He flipped his sword into a reverse grip and hurled it with all his might. Just as the Green Corpse began to rise, the blade struck it squarely, embedding itself halfway into the zombie’s abdomen. Green blood gushed out.
The Green Corpse shot to its feet, roaring madly. The sound was ear-piercing, a soul-shaking cry.
Only three people remained in the hall: Wen Qingye, the unconscious old man, and the woman in black. She stood in the distance, her eyes filled with a certain playful amusement as she watched the fight between Wen Qingye and the Green Corpse.
Wen Qingye shot a glance at the woman in black but said nothing.
At that moment, the Sword Body of the One Thought Sword suddenly began to exert an extremely strong pull, continuously absorbing the purest Essence from the Green Corpse’s body. The zombie seemed to go berserk, suddenly charging toward the unconscious old man.
SQUELCH!
The Green Corpse’s claw plunged directly through the old man’s chest. It ripped out the bloody heart, raised it to its mouth, and began to chew greedily.
Such a sight would have scared an ordinary person out of their wits, but Wen Qingye’s expression didn’t so much as twitch. In contrast, the eyes of the woman in black beside him held a glimmer of bloodlust.
’I don’t know what power this woman belongs to,’ Wen Qingye thought with an internal frown. ’Not only is her killing intent strong, but her very nature is this bloodthirsty.’
The old man from the Heaven-Burying Sect had not died by Wen Qingye’s hand, nor by the hand of the woman in black, but at the claws of this Green Corpse.
SLURP-!
After devouring the heart, the Green Corpse began to drink the blood from the old man’s body. Its entire form then started to emit a green radiance. In the faint glow, the scene was not just cruel, but also profoundly eerie.
Wen Qingye’s heart sank. ’This is bad. The Green Corpse is absorbing the old man’s Essence Blood to achieve a breakthrough. I can’t let it succeed!’
At this thought, Wen Qingye shot into motion. All his power began to gather in his hands. In an instant, black and white streams of air swirled around him.
A phantasmal image wavered into existence, slowly solidifying behind Wen Qingye.
It was an ancient, heavy bridge that seemed to span the divide between Yin and Yang—a chasm representing life and death itself. In its presence, all illusions seemed to vanish like smoke.
"Undying Seal Technique, Fourth Form! On the Bridge of Helplessness, Forget Your Past Life!"
Wen Qingye’s Hand Seals flew, the swirling currents of air spinning faster and faster. Then, with a push of both hands, the bizarre Seal Technique shot forward.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The Seal Technique was unbelievably fast. Everywhere it passed, the air itself seemed to shatter, creating a deafening sonic boom.
