Ethan lowered his eyes to the snapped blades scattered by his feet, then looked back up at Morvane—who’d finally caught up to what had just happened.
There was even a hint of concern in Ethan’s gaze.
"What’s wrong?"
"Done fighting?"
Morvane stood at the bottom of the crater, looking—rarely—almost helpless.
He’d been getting hammered with barely a chance to swing back.
And when he finally managed to predict the angle and counter...
he couldn’t even crack Ethan’s defense.
So what now?
On the other side of the battlefield, the energy sphere in front of Kaelira had grown to a ridiculous size.
Purple-red light washed over the entire forest.
Wild power kept spilling outward. Even the ice sheet on the ground was starting to spiderweb with cracks under the pressure.
Everyone had formed a protective line around Kaelira.
Elira, backed by the Divine Sovereign Moth, kept Lopsy’s greatsword pinned and off-target. Ataneya used her fox tails to intercept attacks coming in from the air and from the ground. Andona, Seraphina, and the others—still not fully recovered—held positions in different directions, gritting it out.
Once Kaelira finished charging—
it wouldn’t matter what kind of trash was in the way. It would all get wiped clean.
Ethan glanced that way too.
After confirming everyone was ready, he nodded slightly.
Then Ethan stepped back up beside Morvane.
White energy sparked into existence in his palm again.
He wanted one last try.
If he pushed the sphere to its true limit... could the "mouth" in Morvane’s chest really swallow it without consequences?
It was a gamble.
But Ethan had always worked like that.
Morvane felt the swelling pressure at his side.
He slowly closed his eyes. He didn’t run. He didn’t summon more blood swords. He simply stood there, like he’d decided to take the hit head-on.
At the same time, the protection around Kaelira locked into place.
And the energy sphere in front of her reached its limit.
A massive pillar of purple-red firelight punched into the sky.
The entire island lit up under the violent glow. Lopsy, the Treant, and Gravehook all turned their heads at once, their attention yanked toward that sphere like it had gravity.
Lopsy immediately drove her scissor fragments, trying to tear open space and escape the blast radius.
A slit opened in front of her.
She stepped toward it—
—and the pressure from Kaelira’s release crushed the space back into place.
Lopsy tried again in a different direction.
Failed.
Again and again she slashed with the fragments, but it was like hacking at a wall that refused to give.
The Treant didn’t try to flee.
It stood at the edge of the ice sheet, and the pure, protected power buried deep inside it finally began to flow outward.
Green energy ran along its roots into the ground, passed through mud and ice, and reached Auri’s feet.
Auri looked down.
The power climbed up past her ankles and entered her body—not hurting her, just settling quietly into her palm.
With that last pure power gone, the Treant withered fast.
Leaves fell away.
Bark split.
In the span of breaths, it reverted into an ordinary tree—standing in front of everyone—and then died completely.
Gravehook still tried to stop Kaelira.
It raised its lantern again and released a flood of shattered souls, trying to grind down the sphere by feeding it bodies to burn.
But the moment the souls neared the purple-red light, the pull inside the sphere grabbed them.
They didn’t weaken the attack.
They became fuel.
Kaelira’s energy sphere continued to swell.
At the same time, a purple-red barrier rose around every ally.
The strike was finished.
The explosion was next.
Kaelira lifted both hands... then pressed downward.
The gigantic sphere dropped from the sky and slammed into the center of the battlefield.
BOOM—!
Violent force speared through the ground.
Purple-red flames exploded outward. Forest, ice, and scattered skeletal remains were all swallowed by the shockwave. Even Ethan—still gathering power elsewhere—was shoved hard by the oncoming blast, stumbling back several steps before he managed to steady himself.
Lopsy and Gravehook were at the heart of it.
Two silhouettes vanished inside the purple-red glare.
When the flames faded, they were gone.
Only two drifting clusters of soul-stuff remained in the air.
Proof enough.
Queen Elowen lifted her eyes.
Cold and merciless, she fixed on those two soul clusters still trying to wriggle away. Ice-blue light poured from her palm.
Countless ice spheres rained down from above.
They formed a freezing waterfall, sealing every escape route.
Crack.
After one crisp, brittle sound, both souls were locked solid.
The ice shattered a heartbeat later.
And the last traces of Lopsy and Gravehook were erased from the battlefield.
Ethan finally had no reason to hold back.
The white energy sphere in his hand kept expanding.
Lightning inside it was so dense the "ball" itself disappeared—leaving only a blinding mass of white that spat arcs outward nonstop.
The power hit its peak.
Morvane hadn’t even opened his eyes when Ethan shoved that huge sphere straight into the mouth in Morvane’s chest.
Morvane’s eyes snapped open in real fear.
Wasn’t that... too big?
But the mouth didn’t hesitate.
Teeth spread wide.
A terrifying suction surged from deep in its throat and swallowed the sphere in one gulp. White lightning streamed inward, and Morvane’s abdomen began to swell as the absorption started.
At first it was only a slight bulge.
Then the entire body started expanding under the pressure of that power.
Bone, muscle, and black fog all ballooned together.
In the blink of an eye, a gigantic Morvane stood at the island’s center.
He closed his eyes again, almost savoring it.
Power roared through him, and the chest-mouth slowly shut, satisfied.
Morvane reached into his own body.
A streak of bloodlight was pulled out of his chest, lengthening, shaping, turning into a sky-piercing blood sword. The blade rose higher than the nearby mountains, and the pressure rolling off its crimson edge hammered down toward Ethan.
Morvane breathed in that strength—something he’d never had before.
He looked down at Ethan, and there was even a trace of gratitude in his eyes.
Thank you.
Thank you for making me this strong.
And thank you for handing me the chance to kill you with my own hands.
"You really are a stubborn little idiot," Morvane laughed.
"You bring me power... then let me use it to kill you."
He slung the towering blood sword onto his shoulder.
"How pathetic."
Morvane stepped back.
Both hands closed on the hilt, and he brought the blood sword down from on high, cleaving toward Ethan.
His eyes were already looking at a corpse.
Behind Ethan, the others saw he wasn’t dodging, and their faces changed.
Injured or not, they all sprinted this way.
Seraphina spread her dragon wings again.
Andona lifted the greatsword she still hadn’t dismissed.
Feylora stopped healing, ready to funnel power into Ethan.
But Ethan himself was unnervingly calm.
He knew how much Morvane could swallow.
He knew the instant the king got that kind of power, revenge would come first.
So what?
Before anyone could reach him, they all stopped dead.
Staring.
Frozen in place as they looked ahead.
