Chapter 950: [950] : The Classic Cliché

To be fair, Shin was never a lecherous guy, nor was he the type to lose his mind the second a pretty girl batted her eyelashes at him.

But there was a very specific, underlying reason why he actively avoided romantic entanglements during his dimensional travels.

After all, he was a healthy, red-blooded man. It wasn’t like he was opposed to the idea of a relationship.

The brutal reality of crossing through the multiverse meant that he could form deep bonds with people, only to be forced to leave them behind without warning.

Shin knew his own heart perfectly well. He absolutely hated the agony of tragic farewells.

Pushing those thoughts aside, he looked down at the girl and spoke with a slow, deliberate tone. "Is your name Lucy? That’s a great name. But if you follow me..."

"...there is a very high probability that your entire future bloodline will be erased from existence."

Lucy stared back at him in utter confusion, completely oblivious to the temporal paradoxes he was hinting at.

Blinking her large eyes, she asked softly, "Can I call you Big Brother Shin?"

A massive red flag instantly went up in Shin’s mind. ’Hold on, isn’t this the classic protagonist cliché?’

It always starts like this. The cute girl latches onto you, tags along everywhere, and before you know it, you’ve accidentally built a harem of ’little sisters’ who catch feelings over time.

He refused to let himself fall into that anime trope. Keeping his expression flat, he bluntly replied, "Kid, I don’t even know you."

"You’re calling me ’Big Brother’ already? Aren’t you afraid I might do something terrible to you?"

Unfazed, Lucy met his gaze with wide, innocent eyes. "I’m not scared. The Celestial Spirits told me you aren’t a bad person."

Shin inwardly jumped. Celestial Spirits? So she really was the ancestor of the Heartfilia bloodline, wielding the exact same Celestial Spirit Magic. Still, he wasn’t about to get guilt-tripped into a babysitting gig.

"You’re seriously annoying," he threatened, deepening his voice. "Keep bugging me, and I’ll chop you in half just like that Guild Master."

Internally, he cringed. Threatening to cleave a teenage girl in half was incredibly embarrassing and felt more like cheap villain posturing than an actual deterrent.

Instead of running away, Lucy—who had been quietly weeping in the corner just moments ago—scurried right up to him, staring him down with defiant determination.

Shin wanted to cry. ’Great. She’s completely attached to me now.’

Sighing heavily, he muttered, "Can you back off? We are total strangers. If you keep acting like this..."

He knew the golden rule of isekai survival: never agree to help the mysterious orphaned girl. Granted, Shin himself wasn’t exactly an old man, but he needed boundaries.

While Lucy seemed young, she wasn’t actually a child—she was around sixteen, and physically, she had already developed quite a bit.

Deciding to redirect his frustration, Shin shot a deadly glare at the lingering thugs. "What are you idiots still standing around for? Your part in this is done."

"I told you to get lost!!"

Shin usually wasn’t this arrogant, but he intentionally dialed up his hostility, hoping to intimidate Lucy by playing the ruthless tyrant.

He wanted to flex his overwhelming dominance so she would realize just how dangerous he was and rethink her decision to follow him.

Turning back to her, he raised an eyebrow. "Kid, what part of me screams ’good guy’ to you? I just slaughtered a man in cold blood three seconds ago. Did you miss that part?"

Lucy’s brave facade finally cracked. Her wide eyes welled with tears as she whispered, "I just... I don’t have any other choice, Big Brother. I’m completely out of options."

Dropping to the floor, she pulled her knees to her chest, curling into a tight, sobbing ball.

Shin groaned inwardly, entirely at a loss. It was officially confirmed—he was hopelessly trapped in a classic plot cliché.

The script was writing itself: the vulnerable girl faces a massive tragedy, and as expected, he would inevitably step in to solve her crisis.

Then they’d travel together, sparking a seemingly endless chain of dramatic events.

Despite his vast experiences crossing through multiple universes, he rarely had to deal with this exact flavor of headache. Rubbing his temples, he finally caved. "Alright, fine. I don’t even know who you really are, but whatever trouble you’re in... I’ll help you fix it."

Instantly, a sly, triumphant smirk broke through Lucy’s tears. Looking up at Shin, she declared, "Since you promised, I’m sticking with you from now on! I don’t have anywhere else to go, anyway."

"I know you’re super strong! If you can help me defeat the Emperor, my father will pay you a massive fortune!"

And honestly, who would ever say no to cash? No matter what universe he was in, money was the ultimate universal capital. Having sufficient funds was the prerequisite for doing whatever the hell he wanted.

Shin’s eyebrow twitched. "Wait, what did you just say? A massive fortune?" Despite his previous tough-guy act, his interest was instantly piqued.

Sure, with his overwhelming strength, making money by force would be child’s play. But running around acting like a bandit was way too much of a hassle, and he wasn’t some unreasonable savage.

He wasn’t the type to just rob people blind for the fun of it. But if he was being hired for a mercenary job? Now they were speaking his language.

Crossing his arms, he asked casually, "So... exactly how much are we talking about here?"

Lucy beamed at him with a bright, sunny smile. "Would ten thousand Gold Coins be enough?"

Shin froze for a second. While he hadn’t fully grasped the exchange rate of this specific world yet, standard fantasy logic dictated that if there were Gold Coins, there had to be Silver ones as well.

Therefore, gold had to be a premium currency. With a stash like that, he could travel anywhere in the world without a care. Feigning total nonchalance, he scoffed, "Is ten thousand even a lot? Keep in mind, I’m the guy you’re hiring to assassinate an Emperor."

"Plus, I’m dead broke right now. Even if we head straight for the capital, we’re going to need travel expenses. Do you have any cash on you?"

Lucy shook her head. "I don’t have anything on me. But... my butler probably had some."

The mention of her butler suddenly triggered her grief again, and she collapsed back onto the ground, bursting into fresh tears.

Shin felt a massive migraine coming on. The promise of a massive payout meant he was fully locked into helping her, but her constant crying was grating on his nerves.

"Look, what do you want me to do?" he sighed. "Your butler is dead. Like, completely dead."

"Even with my abilities, there’s no way I can save him now."

But as the words left his mouth, a flicker of hesitation crossed his mind. Technically, he could save the man—but it would require activating the absolute power of his Rinnegan.

The Rinnegan’s restorative techniques drained an immense toll, and recovering from that level of exhaustion would be incredibly difficult in his current state.

Lucy, however, latched onto his hesitation like a drowning person clutching a lifeline.

"You do have a way to bring him back, don’t you?? I knew it! My Big Brother is the absolute strongest!"

She grabbed his hand with both of hers, vigorously shaking it back and forth as she pleaded with him.
