After several clashes of soul, Shibai was clearly losing ground.
He hovered within the River of Time, fingers flicking through seals as he tried to steady the tottering ink-colored barrier around him.
The pride-worthy stream of ink-colored annihilation data was being gnawed away and purified layer after layer by Shun's crystalline-white strands of consciousness.
Cracks spread across the barrier like a spiderweb. Every hasty repair drained more than half of his origin power. The patched membrane grew ever dimmer and frailer, quivering black motes leaking out at the slightest shake.
The dark temporal force around him flowed more sluggishly, and even stirring the river's waters turned sluggish and stuttered.
The ease with which he once inverted space-time with a wave was gone, replaced by open anxiety, his knuckles whitened with strain.
Malice filled his eyes, and the silver-blue river below him churned in disorder. Once-regular ripples were torn ragged by two clashing forces, throwing out jagged, irregular rings.
Shibai's pupils shrank to pinpoints, disbelief and frenzy churning in his gaze. Bony joints jutted in cold arcs, and the ink power around him shook violently with his surging mood.
'Impossible!' He snarled inwardly, eyes refusing to accept what he saw.
This Shun before him had set foot in the River of Time only a second time. By all rights, he should still be groping to adapt to its basic rules, yet he had pierced the river's essence.
Using the faith of billions as a blade and the bonds of souls as an anchor, he had forcibly reversed the gap in strength. It shattered the millennium-old certainties Shibai had hoarded, draping the victory he had thought assured in a murk so thick it could not be dispersed.
For the first time, a haze called uncertainty sprouted in his heart.
Ever since Shibai devoured his first stellar civilization and entrenched himself in the River of Time, he had seen countless powerhouses coveting the river's might—primeval gods who could split stars, star-spanning overlords who ruled myriad domains, reclusive adepts versed in bizarre curses.
Yet never had anyone driven him to such straits on his own turf.
He lifted a hand to the dim membrane, the frailty he felt through his fingertips only fed his fury.
Accustomed to standing above all as a Dominator, treating every living thing as grass, the taste of being pressed back step after step by a little kid ignited a volcano of malice in his heart, long dormant, now erupting.
The river around him darkened under that baleful aura.
At last, he cast aside the contempt etched in his bones, his archaic robe billowing though no wind stirred. It snapped and cracked, muscles tensing beneath the cloth, brimming with savage force.
The dark temporal power that once spread wantonly over the river now drew back. Like an ebb tide, it gathered inward, condensing into a paper-thin ink membrane around him.
Cold and matte, its destructive runes spun at speed. Every tremor disrupted the river's rules, sending chaotic ripples across the water. Even floating shards of history nearby shattered.
He crouched slightly, beast-like, pupils locked on Shun, killing intent nearly solid.
Within the ink data stream, visions of exploding planets and toppling civilizations grew ever clearer—the roar of worlds bursting, the wail of dying life echoed across time.
Each phantom carried a ferocity bent on mutual annihilation as it battered Shun's consciousness.
"Ant, die!" Shibai roared, thrusting a palm forward.
The ink membrane ballooned into a sky-blotting giant hand, abandoning all flourish, wielding the rawest, fiercest origin power, to smash Shun and crush the upstart who dared challenge a millennium of authority.
But the fight did not turn as he wished.
Shun's eyes narrowed slightly, the crystalline signal threads, like tenacious vines, only spread more wildly under suppression.
He even stoked the light of his soul, making the threads more purifying. Wherever their faint glow passed, the ink of annihilation melted without trace. Worse, the time imprints Shibai had forged over a thousand years were visibly loosening and fading.
Shibai pressed trembling fingers to his brow, frantic to steady the marks, wildfire panic spreading in his chest. He knew that prolonging the deadlock would only exhaust his origin and obliterate his soul, until the river devoured him utterly.
'If so, then perish together.' A ruthless glint flashed in Shibai's eyes.
He detonated the hidden measure he had planted inside Shun, forming cryptic seals with his fingers. Dark runes glimmered as he chanted alien verses whose sound tore across space-time.
Ink power erupted into a twisting black sigil laced with runes of ruin, shrieking as it bored toward Shun's abdomen and mind.
He laughed, wild glee in his gaze, bent on mutual destruction.
"A back-door I set years ago... Today I'll leave you wasted in body and soul!"
Shun's soul shuddered as a tearing emptiness wracked his andomen and mind, as if countless steel needles stabbed and twisted. He doubled over, clutching his chest.
A stifled grunt escaped him as the system that let him command time shattered inside his body. It dissolved into countless motes of light that vanished into the River of Time. There was no chance to reclaim it.
The golden Nine Tomoe Rinne Sharingan in his eyes dulled at once, the gold patterns fading until his irises returned to ordinary black. Agony lanced through the optic nerves and he instinctively squeezed his eyes shut.
The bright Chakra cloaking him dried up in an instant, his defensive barrier exploding apart.
The silver-blue glyphs on his fingertips dimmed like dying fireflies and disappeared.
The time-techniques etched into his very marrow were sealed by invisible shackles.
No matter how he roused his soul, it answered with utter silence.
His heart sank as he realized he'd plummeted from peak to rock bottom in a heartbeat, yet the resolve to protect kept him on his feet.
The sudden loss of power churned his blood and a metallic sweetness rose in his throat, blood spilling over his tongue.
He lurched back several steps, sending ripples across the river's surface. He swayed, almost toppling into the surging silver-blue current.
High above, Shibai hovered, gazing down at him. A cruel smile formed on Shibai's lips, triumph and mockery in his eyes. "Shun, without your strength, you're nothing but a lamb for the slaughter."
He had expected the man to collapse in despair, yet Shun slowly straightened. No trace of retreat showed in those eyes, dimming the smugness inside Shibai's heart.
Shun lifted a hand and wiped the blood from his lip. The crimson smear dissolved into faint red mist in the water and was swept away. His aura was almost gone, barely enough to stand, yet his spine stayed ramrod straight.
A frantic blaze burned in his gaze—the fire of devotion to family.
To promises given to old friends, to the duty of shielding countless lives.
"If you want to touch my people, you'll have to walk over my corpse first." His voice was hoarse yet resolute.
Though not a flicker of Chakra remained, he crouched and stamped against the river. Using the rebound, he shot toward Shibai.
No Shinjutsu to aid him, no Chakra to armor him.
He attacked with reckless fury, relying only on his tough body and the stubbornness of his soul.
One thought drove him: even mutual destruction was worth it to protect everything he cherished.
His fist, wrapped in the last wisps of soul-force, smashed toward the dark barrier with a whistle of wind.
As a crisp crack rang out, bones shattered and distorted, blood spraying. The droplets vanished the instant they touched the light film, soul-pain flooding his senses like a tide.
Every breath felt like tearing, yet he never slowed.
The other fist followed, even more ferocious, carrying a do-or-die desperation.
Against the erosion of dark data, he did not flinch, using his will as a shield. Cracks riddled the mental wall, but he still gathered the last glimmers of spiritual light into a spike.
Seizing the moment the barrier wavered, he drove straight at Shibai's core of consciousness.
Veins bulged on his forehead, blood trickling from his lips.
Each clash burned the very origin of his soul, yet he clenched his teeth and refused to yield.
A faint white glow clung to him, never extinguished.
At this moment, Shibai was rattled. He had lived a thousand years and met countless foes, but never one so frenzied. The desperation etched in the man's bones sent the first violent ripple through Shibai's millennium-calm heart.
Fear, cold as vines, coiled tighter around his soul. He instinctively stepped back, the dark membrane around him quivering. He raised a hand to reinforce the barrier, eyes flickering, the thought of retreat already budding inside him.
Shun, even stripped of all power, remained lethally mad. This mutual-mutilation style slowly replaced the Dominator's pride inside him with dread.
He retreated again, the dark wall instantly swelling several fold. It wrapped him securely, destructive runes racing to reinforce the defense, tinged with panic and compromise.
"Enough! Shun, let's negotiate!"
Shibai forced down his fear, trying to tempt the man with profit.
"We end the fight here. I won't meddle with your world, won't harm your family or clan. I'll even share control of the River of Time with you! Together we'll command time!"
Even as he spoke, he quietly gathered strength, ready to strike by surprise at any moment.
Inwardly, he prayed Shun would accept. He did not want to trade deathblows with such a madman.
But Shun showed no sign of stopping, he didn't even spare him a glance. It was as if the offer had never been heard, his attacks only grew fiercer.
The remnants of his soul-force erupted without reserve, the cracks in the consciousness barrier widening.
Still he clung to Shibai, the faint white spiritual light shimmering around him.
It was the bond to family and old friends, the promise to guard countless beings.
That warm power kept him growing stronger even in absolute despair.
"You think… I'd believe your lies?"
Each word he spat came with a mouthful of blood, yet he still hurled himself at the barrier.
"Today… either you die, or I perish!"
Even if his soul and spirit were to be completely annihilated, Shun would drag Shibai down with him to protect everything he cherished.
The fluctuations from the battle between the two grew increasingly violent, their soul collisions turning into invisible shockwaves.
They kicked up massive waves several meters high on the river, the silver-blue water churning and rotating frantically.
A pitch-black space-time vortex formed, emitting an aura that seemed to devour everything. Countless fragments of history flashed and vanished within the vortex.
The prosperity of dynasties and the fall of civilizations were all ruthlessly crushed by the vortex.
The originally constant rhythm of the River of Time was disrupted, and the gates of space-time connecting to the real world in the distance trembled violently. Spiderweb-like cracks covered the surface, and the light grew dim, as if it could collapse at any moment, completely cutting off his path home.
Shun's heart tightened, but he remained focused, preparing to launch a fatal blow during the gap when Shibai's mind was in turmoil.
Soon, the opportunity arrived.
Right as Shibai was distracted, his figure turned into a streak of silver light, slipping through the fractured currents of time itself.
Shibai reacted a fraction too late. A ripple passed through his form, the distortion of countless timelines collapsing inward to reinforce his existence.
Shun's presence flickered into existence directly before Shibai. Then he struck, the blow carrying the weight of his entire existence—his memories, his bonds, every moment he had fought to protect.
His fist cut through layers of space-time, tearing past Shibai's defenses as if they were illusions.
The River of Time convulsed, its currents tangling.
Shibai's form split into countless afterimages, each one representing a different timeline in which he remained undefeated. They overlapped, merged, and multiplied, surrounding Shun.
Shibai declared, "You cannot defeat what exists across all possibilities. Even if you destroy one version of me, countless others will remain."
Shun exhaled and he said, "You're wrong. I don't need to defeat all of you. I just need to reach the one that matters."
Shun closed his eyes. He could feel it—the countless threads of Shibai's existence, each branching into different timelines, each reinforcing the other. But among them, there was a core.
Shibai's true self.
When Shun opened his eyes again, they gleamed with a piercing clarity.
The countless versions of Shibai flickered, destabilized by Shun's realization.
Uncertainty crept into Shibai's expression as he murmured, "That's impossible."
Shun raised his hand, the fragments of time coalescing around it. "This ends now."
Shibai roared, abandoning all restraint. "Ahhhhh!!!"
The vortex exploded outward, its devouring force reaching its peak. Every version of Shibai converged at once, forming a singular, overwhelming existence that eclipsed everything around it.
Shun's strike met Shibai's overwhelming force.
Then—
Crack!
The tiny crack spread outward, splitting through Shibai's form. The convergence of his countless selves faltered.
"No…" Shibai whispered.
Shun's hand remained extended, unwavering. "I found you."
As the core shattered, Shibai's existence was no more. The vortex behind him collapsed inward, its devouring force extinguished as if it had never existed.
Shun stood alone, his gaze fixed on the space where Shibai had vanished.
"It's finally over." He murmured.
(Note: I have decided to end this ff here. In the raw, MC is on the verge of losing and creates another world, where Shun starts from scratch without any memories. After a hundred plus chapters, he finally emerges victorious. If you want to continue from here, you can read chapter 489.)
