Chapter 10: Harem Jutsu
Kakashi stood in the center of the clearing with his book open and his visible eye scanning the treeline. The fire from Naruto's earlier attack had spread to a second tree and was now crackling with the particular sound of wet wood burning under protest. Smoke rose in grey columns and dispersed against the pale blue sky. The bells hung from his belt. The morning had grown warmer.
The attack had stopped. That was what concerned him.
He had expected Naruto to come again immediately. The boy was impulsive, or at least the records said he was impulsive. But the records had been wrong about many things. The boy who had attacked him with taijutsu and shadow clones and a fireball that had required fifteen copies of himself was not impulsive. He was patient. He was calculating. He was waiting.
Kakashi turned a page. He did not need to read the words. He had read this book seven times. The movement was automatic, a performance of casual disinterest designed to draw the enemy out. He wondered if Naruto knew it was a performance. He suspected the boy knew more than he should.
Movement came from the eastern treeline.
Sakura stepped out of the bushes with her hands raised and her expression fixed in something that looked like determination. Her pink hair was matted with leaves. Her face was streaked with dirt and dried tears. Her stomach growled audibly as she walked.
Kakashi did not close his book. "And where are your teammates?"
Sakura stopped walking. She stood approximately ten meters from him, close enough to attack, far enough to run. Her hands were still raised. Her legs were trembling.
"I do not know." Her voice was steadier than her legs. "I think they left me."
Kakashi's visible eye narrowed. He did not believe her. But he was curious. She was the weakest member of the team by every measurable standard. Her academy scores were excellent in theory but abysmal in practical application. She had not landed a single strike during the first phase of the test. She had hidden in the bushes while her teammates fought. If Naruto and Sasuke had abandoned her, that would be disappointing but not surprising.
"Why are you here, then?"
Sakura's hands came together. She crossed her fingers in a sequence of hand signs that Kakashi recognized immediately. The Shadow Clone Jutsu. The same technique Naruto had used earlier.
"Shadow Clone Jutsu."
Smoke erupted around her. Four figures appeared at her sides, identical to her in every way. Pink hair. Red clothes. Forehead protector. The same trembling legs and the same determined expression.
Kakashi's eye widened slightly. Sakura Haruno could not perform the Shadow Clone Jutsu. The academy records were clear on this point. Her chakra reserves were average. Her control was excellent but not sufficient for a technique that required the splitting of physical matter. The basic Clone Jutsu created illusions. The Shadow Clone Jutsu created solid copies. She should not be able to do this.
And yet the clones stood before him. Solid. Tangible. Their feet pressed the grass flat. Their shadows fell across the ground.
The five Sakuras spread out. They moved in a formation that was not quite random, not quite planned. They positioned themselves at the points of a loose circle around him, cutting off his exits, creating angles of attack that overlapped and intersected.
Kakashi closed his book. He tucked it into his vest pocket. His visible eye was no longer relaxed.
"Impressive. I did not know you had it in you."
The Sakura in front of him smiled. It was a nervous smile. The smile of someone who was terrified but committed.
"There is a lot you do not know about me, sensei."
The clones moved. They stepped closer, one pace, then another. Their hands came together in the same sequence. The same hand signs. The same final seal.
"Transformation Jutsu."
The smoke came in five bursts. When it cleared, Kakashi's visible eye went wide. His mouth opened behind his mask. His hand drifted toward his nose as if anticipating what was about to happen.
Five naked women stood around him. They were Sakura but not Sakura. Their breasts were larger. Their hips were wider. Their hair fell in cascades of pink silk that framed faces that were both innocent and knowing. They moved with a grace that the real Sakura had never demonstrated, swaying and posing and pouting in ways that were clearly rehearsed.
"Hey there, sensei."
The voice came from the one directly in front of him. It was Sakura's voice but lower, breathier, the kind of voice that belonged in the magazines Naruto had been buying from the newsstand.
"You have been working so hard. Do you not want to relax?"
Another clone stepped up behind him. Her fingers walked up his spine in a slow parade of light touches. Her breath was warm against his ear.
"You deserve a break, Kakashi sensei. You have been reading that book all morning. Why not look at something better?"
A third clone pressed against his left side. Her bare arm slid around his. Her cheek rested against his shoulder. Her eyes looked up at him with an expression of pure adoration.
"You are so strong. So smart. So mysterious."
A fourth clone crouched in front of him, looking up through her eyelashes. Her hands rested on his knees. Her smile was slow and dangerous.
"We have been watching you all morning. We think you are very sexy."
The fifth clone stood directly in his line of sight. She placed her hands on her hips and arched her back in a pose that would have been ridiculous if it were not also effective.
"Come on, sensei. Play with us."
Kakashi's nose exploded.
Blood sprayed from his nostrils in a crimson arc that caught the morning light and scattered it into something almost beautiful. He staggered backward. His hand came up to his face. The blood ran between his fingers and dripped onto his vest and pooled in the hollow of his collarbone.
The clones laughed. The sound was bright and musical and completely artificial. They closed in around him, touching his arms, his shoulders, his chest. Their fingers were light and teasing. Their bodies blocked his vision. Their scent, some combination of flowers and something else, filled the air around him.
"You are so cute when you blush."
"Has anyone ever told you that you have nice eyes?"
"We could help you with that book. Show you some things the author did not think of."
Kakashi's visible eye was glazed. His breathing was shallow. His hand was still pressed to his nose but the blood was not stopping. He had faced enemy jonin and rogue ninja and tailed beasts. He had survived wars and assassinations and missions that had no right to succeed. He had never faced anything like this.
The bells on his belt jingled.
He looked down. Too late. Sasuke Uchiha was already there, crouched at his feet, one hand closed around the leather cord, the other holding a kunai that had somehow found its way to the soft tissue just behind Kakashi's left knee. The boy's dark eyes were cold and focused. He had not looked at the naked women even once. He had not needed to.
"Sensei. You are distracted."
Kakashi looked at the bells. They were no longer on his belt. They were in Sasuke's hand.
The clones stepped back. They were still naked, still beautiful, still smiling. But the performance had dropped. The breathy voices were gone. The flirting was over. They stood in silence and watched their sensei bleed.
She was fully clothed again. Her face was the color of boiling beets. Her hands were shaking. Her eyes were fixed on a point somewhere above Kakashi's head because she could not bear to look at him or at the clones or at anything else in the clearing.
Naruto dropped from a branch and landed beside her. His expression was flat. His hands were in his pockets. He looked at Kakashi with the same cold assessment he had worn all morning.
"I think we passed."
The clones dispersed. Smoke. Silence. The clearing was quiet except for the crackling of the fire and Kakashi's labored breathing.
Sakura walked to the center of the clearing. She stopped in front of Kakashi. Her face was still red. Her hands were still shaking. But she stood straight and met his visible eye with something that might have been defiance.
"The plan was Naruto’s." Her voice was quiet. "Naruto explained the original purpose of kunoichi. Infiltration. Seduction. Information gathering. He said that for a man like you, someone who reads those books in public, a naked woman would be more effective than any weapon."
Kakashi said nothing. He was still processing the blood loss.
"Naruto performed the Shadow Clone Jutsu from the trees. He transformed the clones to look like me. I performed the Transformation Jutsu on myself to match them. I called out Shadow Clone Jutsu even though I cannot perform it. The hand signs were real. The technique came from him."
She took a breath.
"Sasuke waited. He knew the plan from the beginning. While you were distracted, he took the bells. He did not need to fight you. He did not need to be stronger than you. He just needed to be faster than your reaction time."
She looked down at her hands. Then back up at Kakashi.
"I did not want to do it. I almost slapped Naruto when he told me to give myself larger breasts and more curves. But he was right. The mission comes before personal comfort. That is what it means to be a ninja."
Kakashi wiped the blood from his nose with the back of his hand. He looked at the three genin standing before him. Sakura, red faced and trembling but standing her ground. Sasuke, cold and silent with the bells in his hand. Naruto, watching from the edge of the clearing with his hands in his pockets and his expression unreadable.
He reached up and pulled down his mask. His face was pale. There was blood on his lips. He looked older without the mask, more tired, more human.
"You passed."
No one moved.
"The point of the exercise was never the bells. The point was teamwork. Cooperation. The willingness to put the team ahead of individual needs." He looked at Naruto and Sasuke. "You two did not trust Sakura. You thought she was useless. You were going to leave her behind."
Naruto's expression did not change. Sasuke's jaw tightened.
"But you did not leave her behind. You found a role for her. You gave her a function that only she could perform. And she performed it." Kakashi looked at Sakura. "You were afraid. You were embarrassed. You did it anyway. That is what being a ninja means. Stronger individuals matter. But the team is the actual plan. Without the team, the individuals are just targets."
He tucked his mask back into place.
"Congratulations. You are now officially Team Seven. My team."
Sakura burst into tears. The sound was loud and ugly and completely uncontrolled. She covered her face with her hands and sobbed into her palms, her shoulders shaking, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
Sasuke looked at the bells in his hand. He tossed one to Naruto. Naruto caught it without looking. He looked at the bell. The metal was warm. The leather was soft. He held it for a moment and then slipped it into his pocket.
Sakura was still crying. Naruto walked past her without a word. Sasuke followed.
Kakashi stood in the clearing with blood on his vest and a headache forming behind his visible eye. The fire crackled. The smoke rose. The morning was not yet over.
He had a feeling this team was going to be trouble.
He was not wrong.
