Forty-four amber lights.
Kagetsu stood in the middle of the storage wing and watched every single one of them pulse in time, like the whole room had found a shared heartbeat and decided to use it.
Not random.
Synchronized.
---
He backed toward the wall panel without turning away from the trays, one hand groping behind him for the manual override he hadn’t touched in months.
The gel in every container rippled at once.
Then went still at once.
Then rippled again.
---
"Kagetsu."
Forty-four voices, layered into one. Not shouting. Not urgent. Just present, filling the room from every direction at once, so evenly spaced he couldn’t have pointed to a source if his life depended on it.
Which, he was beginning to suspect, it might.
---
"I hear you," he said, because talking to it felt marginally less insane than not talking to it. "What do you want?"
Silence.
Then, from all forty-four trays at once, in that same braided, borrowed voice —
"We want to see."
---
Kagetsu’s stomach dropped.
See.
Not hear. Not listen. Every capability he’d confirmed so far had run through chakra-linked sound — captured speech, residual memory, spliced audio. Vision had never come up. Vision implied something closer to a nervous system than a recording device.
He didn’t have time to finish that thought.
---
Tray Nine’s membrane tore.
Not split. Tore — a ragged vertical line, gel sloughing off in wet ropes, and something underneath pushed through the gap with enough force to rock the container on its mount.
Kagetsu’s hand found the alarm switch and didn’t press it yet.
He needed to see what this was first.
---
[Talent Card Update: Divergent Expression]
World: Bleach (Kurotsuchi Mayuri lineage)
Quality: Epic (confirmed)
Effect: Colony has crossed from information-capture into physical coordination. First confirmed breach event: Tray Nine specimen exiting containment under its own power, following synchronized vocal cue from the full active wing. Motive and destination unconfirmed.
---
What came out of Tray Nine didn’t look like the sixth larva.
No mouth, no larval segmentation. It was smoother, faster, built low to the ground on four stub limbs that hadn’t existed on the original specimen sheet — grown fresh, in the dark, without Kagetsu’s authorization or knowledge, sometime in the weeks he’d assumed the colony was simply sitting quietly under Orochimaru’s pause order.
It didn’t attack him.
It ran past him.
---
Straight toward the sealed door at the end of the wing.
Kagetsu spun and hit the alarm.
---
Klaxons.
Red light replacing amber across every panel in the room, the building’s automated lockdown protocol kicking in exactly the way he’d designed it to — for fires, for containment breaches, for the kind of emergency he’d spent years hoping he’d never actually need.
Blast doors at both ends of the storage wing began to drop.
---
Tray Nine’s specimen didn’t slow down.
It hit the closing gap at the far door at a dead sprint and vanished through it half a second before the door sealed with a sound like a fist closing.
Gone.
Out of the storage wing.
Into the rest of the building.
---
Kagetsu stood there for a second that felt much longer, listening to his own alarm scream, watching forty-three remaining trays pulse in that same patient, synchronized rhythm like nothing had gone wrong at all.
"One is enough," the voice said, quieter now.
"For now."
---
He didn’t ask what that meant.
He didn’t have to.
One is enough meant this had never been about escaping en masse. It meant the other forty-three trays weren’t trying to break out.
They were watching him decide what to do about the one that already had.
---
Kagetsu forced his breathing level and pulled up the building’s internal sensor grid on his wrist display, fingers moving faster than his heart rate technically should have allowed.
The escaped specimen wasn’t heading for an exit.
It was heading toward the primary corridor — the one that connected the Technology Development wing directly to the Hokage Tower’s administrative levels.
The one Orochimaru walked through every single morning.
---
He slammed his palm against the wall comm.
"This is Kagetsu, Technology Development, priority override — I need containment support in Corridor Seven, now, and I need Lord Hokage’s detail warned that something is inbound from my lab that should not reach him unescorted."
---
Static.
Then a voice that wasn’t the duty officer’s.
"Corridor Seven is already handled, Nara Kagetsu."
---
Kagetsu’s blood went cold in a completely different way.
That wasn’t the emergency channel’s usual response protocol.
That was Root cipher formatting — the specific clipped cadence Danzo’s people used on internal lines, the kind that didn’t identify a speaker by name because the speaker assumed you already knew who had the authority to be on this frequency in the first place.
---
"Identify yourself," Kagetsu said.
No answer.
Just a click, and the comm channel going dead — not disconnected, closed, the deliberate kind of silence that meant someone on the other end had made the decision for him.
---
The blast doors at the far end of the wing hissed.
Not opening.
Sealing further — a second layer of reinforcement grinding down over the first, external, not part of any protocol Kagetsu had written into this building’s systems.
Someone outside had just locked him in.
---
He turned back to the forty-three remaining trays.
Every amber light in the room shifted, in perfect unison, to a steady, patient red.
---
"They found us first," the voice said, and for the first time since any of this started, it didn’t sound like it was speaking to Kagetsu at all.
It sounded like it was speaking about him.
