"Zero contact," Kushina repeated. "That's not a strategy. That's a rule waiting to break."
She let go of Minato's hand.
He looked at her like she'd said something in a language he'd only half learned.
"You heard the same numbers I did," he said. "Forty-one of them. Nine already sampled. This is the worst possible—"
"This is exactly the moment for it," she said. "Nobody's tried the thing I'm actually good at yet."
Around them the fight hadn't stopped so much as settled into an ugly rhythm — copies pressing, Orochimaru and the figure trading ground for time, Kagetsu holding the wall because there was nowhere else useful for him to stand. Every few seconds another copy peeled off from the doorway to replace one that had been driven back, the numbers never actually dropping no matter how many times someone landed a hit.
It wasn't a fight anyone was going to win by attrition. Kagetsu had known that since the second copy folded back together after Orochimaru's kunai.
Kushina apparently had too.
---
The figure had driven two more copies back toward the doorway threshold, buying the group a rough half-circle of breathing room.
It caught the tail end of the exchange and turned, wary.
"Whatever you're about to say," it said, "I'd like it faster than usual."
"I'm not fighting them," Kushina said. "I'm going to hold them."

World: Naruto
Quality: Epic
Effect: Collective bio-processing intelligence, distributed across the colony
Status: Active — Combat Monitoring
Report:
— Doorway signatures: 41, holding
— Copies actively engaged: 6
— Copies circling at range, non-engaged: 12
— Kushina Uzumaki: preparing an unclassified fuinjutsu structure, hand seals consistent with clan containment work, not offensive technique
"You're building a cage," Orochimaru said, watching her hands. "Here. In the corridor."
"I'm building a smaller version of what almost swallowed my husband's suppression seal in eleven seconds," she said. "The difference is I'm not guessing at the grammar. I know it."
---
Minato moved to stand at her back instead of her side — a small shift, but a deliberate one, the first time all night he'd stopped trying to physically intervene and started actually supporting the plan instead.
"Tell me what you need," he said.
"Time. About twenty seconds where nothing gets close enough to break my hands apart."
"That I can do."
He was gone before she finished the sentence, a yellow flash cutting between her and the nearest circling copy, Hiraishin closing the gap faster than anything in the corridor could track.
---
The figure watched him go with something that might have been approval.
"Didn't expect that out of him tonight," it said, mostly to itself.
"You don't know him," Kagetsu said, still holding position near the wall, arm burning steady gold.
"I know exactly what he's capable of," the figure said. "I didn't expect he'd let go of controlling the outcome long enough to use it well. That's different."
It said the second half of that quieter, almost to itself, in a tone that suggested the observation had cost it something to make out loud — as if watching Minato choose to trust someone else's plan over his own instincts had touched a nerve the figure hadn't expected to have.
---
Kushina's hands moved fast, seals stacking on seals, the same nested, layered structure Kagetsu had watched form across the wall over the last five chapters — except smaller, tighter, deliberately imperfect in a way that felt less like a mistake and more like a choice.
"You're not copying the wall-seal exactly," Kagetsu said, reading the shape of it. "Why not?"
"Because the wall-seal was built to open," she said, not looking up. "I need one built to close."
Her fingers didn't hesitate once, even as a copy broke through Orochimaru's guard and got within three feet of her before Minato cut it off with a shoulder check that sent it staggering sideways. She didn't flinch at the noise. She didn't look up at all. Every motion of her hands had the particular, practiced economy of something rehearsed a hundred times in private and never once shown to anyone outside her own clan.
Kagetsu found himself thinking, absurdly, that this was probably the first time in the entire arc she'd looked less like someone reacting to a crisis and more like someone finally doing the thing she'd trained her whole life for.
---
Orochimaru fell back to flank her other side, kunai reversed, watching the twelve non-engaged copies for the first sign of a coordinated push.
"If this fails the way the last one failed," he said, "it fails in eleven seconds. You have that long before I pull you out regardless of what you say about it."
"It won't fail like that one," Kushina said. "That one was reverse-engineered by someone who'd only ever watched me use it once, from a distance, without understanding why the third seal matters."
"And you understand why it matters."
"I invented it."
---
The ground beneath her hands lit ash-red, then shifted, deliberately, into a color Kagetsu hadn't seen on any seal in this corridor yet — a deep, contained blue, cooler than anything the wall-seal or the arm mark had produced.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Alert — New Seal Signature Detected
Report:
— Structure: Uzumaki containment craft, active variant
— Color signature: blue, distinct from all prior ash-red/maroon/gold readings this arc
— Function (inferred): localized containment field, radius expanding
— Compatibility with doorway-copy signatures: unknown — first live test in progress
The twelve circling copies stopped circling.
All at once, in perfect unison, their heads turned toward Kushina.
---
"That's new," the figure said, tension sharpening its voice for the first time since the fight began. "They weren't tracking her before. The overlay was working."
"The overlay's still working," Kagetsu said, checking his own arm. "Nothing's changed on my end."
"Then it's not her signature they're reacting to."
The figure's ash-red half went very still.
"It's the color," it said. "They recognize the color."
The corridor felt, for a moment, colder than it had all night — not from anything physical, but from the way the figure's certainty cracked cleanly down the middle, its whole bearing shifting from something that had been managing a crisis to something that had just been handed a new one it hadn't accounted for.
Kagetsu had seen the figure surprised exactly once before, in Ch. 337, when the first signatures multiplied at the threshold. This was worse than that. This looked like fear.
---
Kushina's hands didn't stop moving, but something in her jaw tightened.
"Recognize it from where," she said.
"I don't know," the figure said, and for the first time all night, the words came out fast, unguarded, genuinely rattled. "I've never seen that shade used before. Not by you. Not by anyone I've watched in four months. Not by anyone since—"
It stopped.
---
The twelve copies moved as one, no longer circling, no longer searching — closing on Kushina's position in a straight, coordinated line that had nothing in common with the wandering, half-second-delayed drift they'd shown all fight.
Minato reappeared between two of them mid-stride, already cutting the line in half.
Orochimaru stepped into the gap on the other side, kunai reversed, putting his own body between three of the twelve and the woman still buried wrist-deep in unfinished seal work.
"Kushina," he said, low, urgent. "However long you need, you have less of it than you think."
"I know."
Her voice didn't shake. Her hands didn't slow.
If anything, the last few seals came faster, each one snapping into place with the certainty of something she'd stopped needing to think through chapters ago, back when this was still theory instead of thirteen years of private, unwitnessed practice finally being asked to hold real weight.
---
Kagetsu pushed off the wall, gold overlay flaring, and put himself at the last open angle Minato and Orochimaru hadn't covered, more instinct than plan.
He didn't touch anything. He didn't need to.
He just needed one more body between the twelve and the twenty-nine still watching from the doorway, buying the fraction of a second that might matter.
And Kushina, both hands buried wrist-deep in blue light, finished the seal a half-second before the first copy reached her — and looked up just in time to see her own containment field flare to life around all twelve of them at once.
It held.
For exactly three seconds, it held.
Then every one of the twelve copies inside it turned the same shade of contained blue, and spoke, in perfect unison, with a voice that wasn't the figure's and wasn't anyone's she recognized:
"There you are."
