"There. Now we’re all here."
The words came out of Kushina’s mouth in a voice that didn’t belong to her, warm the way a held knife is warm right before it isn’t anymore, and for a full second nobody in Corridor Seven moved at all.
Minato’s hand was still on her shoulder. He hadn’t let go. He couldn’t have said, afterward, whether that was courage or just his body refusing to catch up with what his ears had already told him.
Orochimaru’s kunai lay where he’d dropped it.
Forty-one copies at the far end of the corridor had gone still — not the half-second drift-and-track they’d held since Ch. 337, but a full stop, every one of them facing the same direction at once. Toward Kushina. Toward whatever had just started speaking through her.
Even the doorway-thing had stopped advancing.
"Report," Orochimaru said, and his voice came out steadier than his hands. "Kagetsu. Anything."
Nothing answered him from where Kagetsu should have been standing. Kagetsu’s own body was still upright, technically present, eyes open and unfocused in a way that had stopped being reassuring several minutes ago.
---
Kagetsu was in there too.
Not watching from outside anymore — he hadn’t switched back since parity, and there was no sense pretending otherwise. He was behind Kushina’s eyes, riding a body that had stopped answering to either of them, and from that angle the voice wasn’t something he heard.
It was something he felt come out through a throat he currently had no claim to.
This isn’t hers, he thought, and the thought arrived strange and doubled, the way everything did now. This isn’t me either. So whose corridor is this.
No answer. But something on the other side of Kushina’s own awareness — small, contained, unmistakably still fighting — pushed back against the question like it had been waiting for someone to ask it.
She’s still here, Kagetsu realized. She’s still — she’s listening to me think that.
---
The figure moved first.
Not toward Kushina. Toward the voice, the way you’d step toward a fire you already knew you couldn’t put out but had to stand near anyway.
"You don’t get to use her," it said — its first spoken words since Ch. 337’s extended explanation, the silence finally breaking not for Kagetsu, not for the vessel’s accusation, but for this. "Whatever this is. Whatever you think you’re owed. Not through her."
The voice, still wearing Kushina’s face, turned toward the figure unhurried.
"I don’t think I’m owed anything." Kushina’s head tilted, a gesture that had never once belonged to her. "I know exactly what I’m owed. You’ve known too. Four months, you told him." A pause, and something almost fond crept into the wrongness of it. "You didn’t finish that sentence back then either. Should I finish it for you?"
The figure said nothing. But Kagetsu, still trapped behind eyes that weren’t answering to him, felt the mark on his own absent arm go cold in a way it never had before — not pain, not numbness. Recognition.

[Divergent Expression — Alert]
Signature interaction detected between source candidate and split-faced figure.
Historical familiarity confirmed: high.
Adversarial marker: present.
This is not the first contact between these two signatures.
---
"Ask him what happened four months ago," the voice said, to no one and everyone, still using Kushina’s mouth like it was a borrowed coat that fit better than expected. "Ask him why a door he built specifically to keep me out let me walk straight through the second his little decoy touched something it wasn’t supposed to touch."
Orochimaru found his voice before Minato did. "You’re saying the overlap opened this."
"I’m saying parity is a door," the voice said. "Sixty and sixty. Two locks turning the same amount at the same time. He—" a nod, if you could call it that, toward the figure, made with a stranger’s economy of motion "—built the first door out of a boy who said yes. I don’t need anyone to say yes. I just needed the numbers to match."
"How long have you been waiting for that," Orochimaru said. Not a challenge. A genuine question, and Kagetsu — still watching from somewhere behind eyes that weren’t his — recognized the tactic even trapped as he was. Keep it talking. Every second it talked was a second it wasn’t doing whatever it had actually come to do.
The voice seemed to recognize the tactic too, and answered anyway, unbothered.
"Longer than the boy’s been alive," it said, with a tilt of Kushina’s head toward Kagetsu’s motionless body. "Longer than she’s been alive." A pause, and something almost wistful passed under the wrongness of the voice. "Not as long as him, though. Nothing’s waited as long as he has. That’s the part he won’t say out loud."
The figure’s stillness had a different quality to it now. Kagetsu, feeling it through the cold place where his mark should have been, understood without being told that the voice had just come closer to the truth than anything said all arc — and that the figure knew it, and had no answer prepared for being right.
---
Minato’s grip on Kushina’s shoulder tightened until his knuckles went white.
"Let her go."
"She’s not going anywhere," the voice said, almost gently. "Neither is he." A beat. Kushina’s head turned — not toward Minato, not toward Orochimaru, but down, and to the side, at an angle that had no reason to matter to anyone standing in the room.
Minato’s other hand had already dropped to the kunai at his hip, a three-pronged blade he hadn’t drawn once tonight. Kagetsu, still riding a body that answered to no one, felt the sudden, specific spike of Kushina’s own attention fix on that hand — not fear of the blade. Something closer to recognition, and underneath it, urgency she had no way to voice.
She wants him to use it, Kagetsu thought, and hoped, uselessly, that thinking loud enough counted for something. Minato — she wants —
He never finished the thought. The voice’s attention had already moved on.
At an angle that would have been looking directly at Kagetsu, if Kagetsu still had a body in the corridor to be looked at.
"Oh," the voice said, and for the first time since it had started speaking, something in its tone shifted — not fear, not quite, but the specific interest of someone who has just found a second useful thing where they only expected one. "You’re both still in here."
---
Kagetsu felt it land on him.
Not a look. Not exactly. Something closer to a hand passing through the exact space where his attention lived, testing it the way you’d test a wall for a stud before deciding where to hang something heavy.
Get out, he thought, and it came out smaller than he wanted it to, because thoughts didn’t have volume and this was the only weapon he currently had. This isn’t your corridor either.
"No," the voice agreed, almost pleasant about it. "It’s hers. But you’re renting space in it right now, and that’s — " a pause, Kushina’s mouth curving into a shape her own face had never once made in front of any of them, warm and terrible in exactly equal measure " — that’s new. That’s actually new. I didn’t know you could do that yet."
---
The figure’s silence broke fully.
"Don’t." One word, and it came out closer to a plea than anything the figure had said all arc. "Whatever you’re about to do — don’t. He’s not part of this."
"You made him part of this," the voice said, without any heat at all, which was somehow worse than if it had shouted. "Ch. 338. Your second door. You didn’t ask my permission." Kushina’s head turned back toward the figure fully now, and her borrowed voice dropped to something almost tender. "You never do. That’s always been the problem with you."
The colony’s alert line updated once more, and this time even the bracket’s usual flat phrasing couldn’t quite hide the shape of what it was reporting.
[Divergent Expression — Status]
Source candidate signature has identified Kagetsu’s overlapped consciousness as a second point of access.
Current focus: uncertain. Both occupants of the shared body now individually detectable.
Recommendation: evacuate Kagetsu’s consciousness from the shared space immediately.
Method: not available.
---
Orochimaru moved on instinct, closing the last few feet between himself and Kushina’s body with no weapon raised, because for once a weapon wasn’t the point.
He didn’t reach her in time.
Kushina’s — the voice’s — hand rose, unhurried, and pressed two fingers flat against her own sternum, directly over the place Kagetsu had once described feeling someone else’s fear organizing itself, quiet and controlled, underneath his own.
"Let’s see what’s actually in here," the voice said, to Kagetsu, and only to Kagetsu, in a tone gentle enough that it took a full second to understand it as a threat at all.
Then it pushed.
