Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 452 - 348 : The Second Door Still Opens!!

[Divergent Expression — Signature Update]

Doorway-thing: closing distance, unhurried, unbroken vector.

Estimated contact: under ninety seconds.

Target: unconfirmed. Trajectory consistent with either Kushina or Kagetsu.

Recommendation: none available.

---

It didn’t hurry.

That was the part that got under Kagetsu’s skin worse than speed would have. Ninety seconds was plenty of time to plan around a fast enemy. It was an insulting amount of time to spend watching something slow walk toward you like the outcome had already been decided somewhere upstream of anyone in the corridor getting a vote.

"Positions," Orochimaru said, already moving. "Kushina, Minato, hold the left wall. Kagetsu, behind me."

"I can still fight."

"You collapsed twenty minutes ago." Orochimaru didn’t look back. "Behind me."

Kagetsu didn’t argue further, which told him more about how he actually felt than any honest answer would have. His legs still weren’t entirely trustworthy. The mark on his arm had gone quiet since Ch. 347, but quiet wasn’t the same as gone, and he’d learned not to mistake the two anymore.

Behind him, the forty-one copies at the corridor’s far end hadn’t moved. Whatever the doorway-thing was doing, it wasn’t dragging them along for it.

"Just the one," Orochimaru said, reading the same thing Kagetsu was. "That’s new too. It’s never operated alone before."

"Maybe it doesn’t need backup for whatever this is," Kagetsu said. "Maybe that’s the part that should worry us."

Orochimaru didn’t answer that. He didn’t need to. His stance had already answered it for him.

---

Orochimaru met it eight feet out, full-body, no weapon drawn this time — if a blade couldn’t touch it, maybe mass could.

It didn’t slow down.

It didn’t speed up either. It simply wasn’t where Orochimaru’s shoulder came down a half-second later, having drifted around him the way water goes around a rock without ever seeming to notice the rock was an obstacle at all.

"It’s not routing to avoid a fight," Orochimaru called back, resetting. "It’s routing because fighting isn’t the errand."

---

Kushina stepped forward before Minato could stop her, and for once he didn’t try.

She’d been quiet since getting her voice back — quiet in the specific way of someone doing arithmetic she didn’t like the answer to. Kagetsu, watching her now with eyes that were finally, fully his own, understood the quiet a little better than he wanted to.

She hadn’t been unconscious for two Chapters. She’d been listening the whole time, from the wrong side of her own body, cataloging everything the source candidate said and did the way she catalogued anything else that threatened her family.

"I know what to do," she said. "I’ve known since it started walking."

Minato caught her wrist anyway, one last check, not a refusal. "This isn’t another seal. I know that look. Tell me what it is before you do it."

"It’s not sealcraft at all," she said, and for a second the old flatness was back in her voice, the same tone she’d used identifying restricted Uzumaki structures back in Ch. 333. "It’s the other half of what my mother taught me. I’ve never used it in front of any of you. I wasn’t sure it would still answer me after everything the source candidate did with this body." She flexed her free hand once, testing it. "Only one way to find out."

---

She bit her thumb, drew a fast line of blood across her palm, and slammed it flat against the corridor floor.

Nothing so refined as a seal circle bloomed this time. What came up instead came up fast and physical — thick chains, red-gold, tearing free of her back in a burst that threw her hair forward and left Minato’s breath catching audibly beside her.

Kagetsu had never seen them before. Neither, from the look on his face, had Orochimaru.

[Divergent Expression — Alert]

New signature type detected, origin: Kushina Uzumaki.

Classification: not sealcraft. Chakra-construct restraint technique, previously unrecorded in this branch.

Density: significantly higher than any prior Uzumaki technique observed this arc.

Recommendation: proceed. First technique of this arc assessed as viable against target signature class.

---

"Chains," Minato said, low, disbelieving in a way that sounded like relief trying to happen too fast to be trusted yet. "You never told me you could—"

"I didn’t know I still could," Kushina said, and there wasn’t time for anything else, because the chains were already moving, whipping out ahead of her in a spread too wide and too fast for the doorway-thing’s unhurried pace to route around.

They didn’t cut it. They didn’t need to.

They wrapped it.

---

The doorway-thing stopped.

For the first time since it had folded into existence out of three unified doorway signatures back in Ch. 342, it stopped entirely — not drifting, not routing, not advancing. Held.

"Confirmed," Orochimaru said, quiet, careful, like naming it too loudly might undo it. "It’s not immune to everything."

"It’s not immune to this," Kushina said, breathing hard, both hands raised, the chains taut and humming between her palms and the entity they’d caught. "Weapons cut through it because weapons ask permission to do damage. This isn’t asking."

Orochimaru circled wide, kunai still lowered, studying the held shape with open suspicion. "It stopped struggling almost immediately. Either the chains are stronger than anything we’ve thrown at it, or it wasn’t planning on fighting back to begin with."

"Does it matter which," Minato said, close at Kushina’s shoulder now, watching her hands rather than the entity, the way he’d been watching her all arc.

"It matters," Orochimaru said, "because one of those means we found a weakness. The other means it let us catch it."

---

The doorway-thing didn’t struggle.

That was almost worse than if it had. It simply stood there, held, patient in exactly the way it had been patient the entire Chapter, and when it finally spoke, it did so in a voice that belonged only to itself — not the vessel’s shared "Finally," not any borrowed cadence.

Low. Unbothered. Genuinely, disturbingly polite.

"Good grip," it said. "She always did have one."

---

"Who," Kushina said immediately, sharp enough to cut the humming air between them. "Who are you comparing me to."

The doorway-thing tilted whatever passed for its head, unhurried even now. "Wrong question. You’ll get the right one eventually. You’re closer than you think."

[Divergent Expression — Alert]

Restrained signature attempting verbal engagement rather than escape.

No physical resistance detected against the chain restraint.

Interpretation: compliance, not failure.

---

"Then answer the question I did ask," Orochimaru said, closing in now that it was held, kunai finally drawn and finally, theoretically, useful against a target that wasn’t moving. "What were you walking toward. What’s the errand."

The doorway-thing’s attention shifted, unhurried, toward Kagetsu — toward the arm that had gone gold twice this arc, toward the mark that had started all of this back in Ch. 327.

"Confirming it still works," it said. "That’s all. I wasn’t going to hurt him. I was going to knock."

"Knock for what," Kagetsu said, and heard his own voice come out steadier than he felt.

The doorway-thing almost smiled. It was a strange thing to watch happen on a face that had no real business smiling at all.

"Tell him the second door still opens," it said. "He’ll know which one. He’ll be very pleased to hear it."

---

Nobody asked who "he" was.

Nobody had to. The word landed in the corridor with a weight none of them had felt since Ch. 313, since a name none of them had said out loud in longer than they should have gone without saying it, and Kushina’s chains — still taut, still humming, still holding — flickered gold at both ends at exactly the same moment, entirely without her willing it.

"That’s not possible," she said, staring at her own hands like they’d betrayed her. "These don’t react to anything but my own intent."

Orochimaru’s eyes hadn’t left the doorway-thing. "Then either your intent just changed, or something out there heard its name almost get said and answered before any of us could stop it."

Kagetsu felt the mark on his own arm go warm again, faint, nowhere near the gold flare of Ch. 345 or 348’s opening minutes — just a low, patient heat, like something reminding him it was still listening.

He didn’t say anything about it. Not yet. Not with the doorway-thing still watching him with that same terrible, unhurried patience, waiting to see if anyone in the corridor would be the one to finally say the name out loud.

The doorway-thing, still held, still patient, still smiling in whatever way it had access to a smile, said nothing else at all — and let the silence answer the question everyone in the corridor had just started asking themselves at once.
