Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 460 - 356 : The Second Door Reaches First!!Kagetsu felt his own arm as if it belonged to someone standing slightly to his left.
He could still move his fingers. He could still clench his fist.
None of it mattered, because the arm kept rising anyway, past the point where clenching a fist should have stopped it, past the point where anything he tried should have stopped it.
It didn’t hurt. That was the part that unsettled him most. Ch. 350’s occupation had come with weight, with pressure, with something forcing its way in through resistance. This had no resistance to speak of. It just moved, the way his own hand moved when he reached for a cup without thinking about it, and that unthinking ease was worse than pain would have been.
"Kagetsu." Orochimaru’s voice, close, controlled in the specific way that meant it wasn’t. "Can you feel that?"
"I can feel everything," Kagetsu said. "I just can’t stop it."
—
A thread of ash-red light unspooled from his fingertip.
Thin. Almost delicate. It didn’t move like the mark’s earlier growth — no crawling, no spreading branch pattern. It moved the way a hand moves when it already knows exactly where it’s going.
Straight toward the crack on the figure’s face.
—
The figure scrambled backward, the first genuinely undignified motion Kagetsu had seen from it all night, palms skidding against the corridor floor.
"Don’t let that touch me."
"Kagetsu isn’t doing this," Orochimaru said, already moving to grab the offending arm. "He just told me he can’t stop it."
"I know he isn’t. That’s the problem." The figure’s voice had gone thin, stretched over something close to genuine fear. "Get him back. Now. However you have to."
—
Orochimaru’s hand closed around Kagetsu’s wrist.
It didn’t slow down.
If anything, the pull sharpened — Kagetsu felt Orochimaru’s own considerable strength register as resistance, felt the arm register it, and simply route around it the way water routes around a rock too small to matter.
"Minato." Orochimaru didn’t look away from the thread. "Now would help."
Minato was already there, both hands wrapped around Kagetsu’s forearm above Orochimaru’s grip, weight thrown backward with everything he had.
The thread kept extending.
Six inches now. Closing the gap to the figure’s crumpled, half-crawling retreat at a speed that made distance feel like a formality.
—
[Divergent Expression: Passive Monitor — Mark Channel]
Trigger: Continuous involuntary mark activation, source distinct from prior Ch. 350 occupation pattern.
Reading: Signature actively projecting through the channel does NOT match "he’s" Ch. 351 vocal signature. Does NOT match the splinter’s baseline reading. Does NOT match the source candidate, the vessel, the doorway-thing, or the Madara-consistent baseline.
Match against every entity currently on file: 0%.
Confidence: Full — this is a clean, unambiguous zero, not an inconclusive partial.
Recommendation: Sever if possible. No method identified. Confidence: none.
—
"It’s not him," Kagetsu said, reading the colony’s feed himself, the words coming out steadier than he felt. "It’s not the splinter. It’s not anything we’ve got a name for."
"Then what is reaching for you," Kushina said, chains already half-formed at her shoulders, aimed at nothing yet because there was nothing solid to aim at.
The figure didn’t answer.
It had stopped retreating.
It had gone very, very still, the way something goes still when running is no longer the useful option.
—
"You know what this is," Orochimaru said. Not a question.
"I know what it isn’t," the figure said. "That’s worse."
"Worse how," Kushina said.
"Because I’ve spent this whole arc measuring things against what I know," the figure said, not looking away from the thread. "The vessel. The doorway-thing. Him. Even the splinter, I could at least place a shape to it. This isn’t measuring against anything. It’s just here, and it’s been here longer than any of us have been looking."
The thread crossed the last inch.
—
Contact didn’t look like anything.
No flash. No sound. Just the faint ash-red line meeting the deeper red-black of the crack running down the figure’s face, and holding there, steady, like a plug finding a socket it had been machined for.
For one full second, nothing happened at all.
Then the light reversed.
—
It didn’t flow from Kagetsu into the figure the way everyone had braced for.
It flowed the other way.
Kagetsu felt it in his chest before he understood what he was feeling — something pulling out of the crack, thin and cold and enormous all at once, running backward up the thread, into his fingertip, into his arm, toward the mark itself.
The figure gasped like something had been physically pulled out of it, because something had.
"That’s mine," it said, voice cracking in a way that had nothing to do with the fracture on its face. "Whatever that is, it’s mine, it’s been mine, don’t—"
—
Orochimaru’s grip tightened hard enough to leave a mark that would still be there tomorrow.
It didn’t matter. The channel wasn’t listening to grip strength.
Kushina’s chains snapped forward, aimed now, wrapping around the thread of light itself rather than either person it connected — the same instinct that had stopped the doorway-thing in Ch. 348, applied to something that had no obvious body to restrain.
The chains held for exactly as long as the doorway-thing’s restraint had.
Then they went straight through, like closing a fist around smoke.
—
"Kushina, don’t touch it again," the figure said, sharper now, almost commanding. "If it takes hold of the chain the way it’s taking hold of him—"
"Taking hold of what," Minato said. "Say it plainly, we don’t have time for—"
"I don’t have a plain word for it," the figure snapped. "That’s the entire problem. I’ve spent this long not naming it because naming the wrong thing gets people killed, and I am not doing that to you standing in front of me."
Kushina let the failed chains dissolve rather than try again. Her jaw was tight, the same look she’d worn all night every time an answer got deferred one more time — but she didn’t push. Not with Kagetsu’s arm still moving on its own six feet away.
—
The pull kept going.
Kagetsu felt his own vision start to gray at the edges — not the total displacement of Ch. 345, nothing that dramatic, just a thinning, like standing up too fast and staying that way.
"Orochimaru." His own voice sounded far away to himself. "Something’s coming through. Not into me. Through me."
"Where."
"I don’t—"
The mark flared.
Not maroon. Not the gold of Ch. 338 or Ch. 345.
White.
—
[Divergent Expression: Passive Monitor — Mark Channel, UPDATE]
Reading: Signature transfer complete. Estimated 12% of total unclassified mass relocated from figure’s signature into Kagetsu’s mark before the channel closed on its own.
Note: Channel did not sever under any attempted intervention (physical restraint, chakra-chain containment). It closed unprompted, at a moment Divergent Expression cannot correlate to any external action taken by anyone present.
Recommendation: Immediate full read of the relocated fragment. Risk: unknown. Confidence: none.
—
The thread snapped back into Kagetsu’s fingertip and vanished, the white light collapsing down to a single point and winking out.
His arm dropped, suddenly, fully his own again, and he nearly went down with the weight of it — Minato caught his shoulder before he hit the floor.
His hand was shaking. He hadn’t noticed until it stopped moving on its own and started moving on his again, badly.
The figure sat very still against the far wall, one hand pressed to its crack, breathing in the ragged, unsteady way of something that had just had a piece of itself taken without permission.
"Are you—" Kushina started.
"I’m fine," the figure said, in a voice that made it very clear it wasn’t. "I’m not the one you should be worried about right now."
—
"Then who," Orochimaru said.
The figure looked at Kagetsu.
Not at his face. At his arm — specifically at the mark, still glowing faintly white at the edges where the white flare hadn’t fully faded.
"Whatever just moved through him isn’t gone," it said. "It’s inside the mark now. And it’s never been inside anything before that could talk back."
Kushina’s chains dissolved slowly back into nothing, unused, still trembling faintly at the tips. Minato hadn’t let go of Kagetsu’s shoulder. Orochimaru hadn’t let go of his wrist either, as if letting go now, after everything, would somehow undo the one small piece of control he still had.
Nobody moved to test whether the mark’s glow would answer to being touched.
—
Kagetsu felt it the instant the words landed.
Something shifted, low in his chest, settling in like a guest finding a chair it intended to keep.
He opened his mouth to say he was fine.
What came out instead was a voice that wasn’t quite his own, quiet, almost curious, testing the shape of speech for the first time.
"...Oh," it said. "This is different."
