Naruto: North and South
Chapter 212: What Life Means in a World That Doesn’t WaitIt had to be said, Obito's argument actually made too much sense. So much sense that even Itachi began to wonder if his so-called "uncle" had finally stopped overthinking everything except Kakashi.
He gave him an admiring look and nodded approvingly. "Hmm, as expected of Kakashi. You're very good at this kind of thing." BOOM! Obito immediately snapped. "Hey, nephew, what the hell does that mean?!"
The tension dissolved instantly. Laughter followed, light and unrestrained. And just like that, the topic of life itself was never mentioned again.
Konan truly wished she could forget everything related to "life." But Shibai would not allow it. The Void Realm remained the same, endless, unreal, and suffocatingly calm. Why is it that every time I fall asleep, I end up here?
And every time she woke up, she remembered nothing. Only exhaustion remained, like a sleep disorder that never ended. But when she slept again, everything returned. Every word. Every moment. Every question Shibai had ever asked.
And now, he asked again. "Why does life exist?"
Konan looked like she wanted to cry. She crouched down, squeezing out two reluctant tears as if forcing them into existence. "I don't understand you at all, Shibai. I told you, I don't know anything. I don't want to know anything. I don't believe what you say, I don't believe what you show me. Just stop dragging me here already!!!" Her voice cracked into a miserable whimper.
Shibai watched calmly. Kindly. Silently. And eventually, the crying stopped on its own.
Konan wiped her face, stood up, and bowed politely. "Forgive my rudeness, Otsutsuki-sama. If you don't release me, don't blame me for what happens next." Her expression sharpened. Killing intent surfaced. Paper wings unfolded behind her. A weapon formed in her hand. She was ready.
BOOM! Over a billion explosive tags detonated at once. Yet Shibai remained untouched. The Void Realm remained untouched. No ripple. No damage. Nothing.
Silence. An awkward silence. Konan slowly retracted her wings, landing gracefully as if nothing had happened. "Forget everything I just did." She answered the original question flatly. "I don't know."
Shibai let out a faint smile. "Those who seek, shall be answered." Konan sighed. "Then let me out." Shibai shook his head. With a slight motion of his hand, a vision unfolded on the God Tree. An Otsutsuki being was shown "born."
"Our clan has no future. To us, life holds no meaning." "I cannot understand your emotions, nor can I understand life itself."
Konan frowned. "You're mixing things up. Life and emotions aren't the same thing." She spoke clearly, almost analytically. "If you talk to me like this, explain things, show me your thoughts, I'll start to understand you." "And when the time comes to kill you, I might hesitate." "But my mission is to kill you." "So you're making things harder for me."
She narrowed her eyes. "If possible, don't bring me here again. And don't let me remember these conversations." "Impossible."
"Can you stop speaking in vague nonsense?! We're from completely different eras, do you even understand what a communication gap is?!"
Shibai shook his head. But clarified anyway. "You will not be troubled."
Konan fell silent. Then sighed deeply. "I won't. That's the problem." "I just don't like seeing you. The more I see you, the more I feel like your kind is something impossible to defeat." "And that weakens my resolve." "For my allies, that's dangerous."
Shibai did not respond. He already understood. She was not lying. And he did not pursue the topic further.
Instead, Konan asked something else. "Did you do something to my body?" "I know my limits. But after meeting you, my ceiling keeps rising." "Why?"
"Your body lacks our bloodline." "It must be continuously refined, day and night, before it can." He stopped.
Konan frowned immediately. "Before it can what?" Shibai shook his head. "You are not yet permitted to know."
Konan exhaled slowly. "Fine." "Then why do I forget everything when I wake up?" "You do not need to know."
Konan stared at him for a moment. Then she gave up. Forget it. I can't beat him anyway. Worst case, I'll just drag everything down with me. She turned away. But stopped after a few steps. There was still something she needed to say.
"Shibai." "I don't understand your race." "But this idea of strength, by consuming your own kind." "Don't you feel even a little guilt?" "Guilt, what is that?"
Konan paused. Not because she had an answer, but because she realized she had no right to criticize it. Humans weren't so different. Killing. Stealing techniques. Destroying lives for power. Even within her own world, people like Kakuzu had taken lives, even turned bodies into tools. Was that really so different? We're all just different degrees of the same thing.
"I spoke too much." "Humans aren't any cleaner than you." "I don't even know what life is." "My mother gave birth to me, so I live." "That's all." "Painful or happy, it's still just living." "There doesn't have to be meaning." "But I want to live." "I want to go home with everyone." "And for that." "I don't feel guilty about taking your chance to live." "I won't apologize." "Because to me." "It's either you die, or I survive."
She turned and walked forward. Step by step, and disappeared into the Void Realm.
Shibai watched her leave. Then smiled faintly. "As you wish."
