Naruto: The Uchiha They Should Have Killed
Chapter 288: The Utter Madness of Shimura DanzōWith Uchiha Ren's approval, Minato Namikaze no longer had any reservations and nodded to Shikaku Nara .
Understanding the signal, Shikaku raised his voice.
"Everyone, please gather around. There are several matters we need to discuss and hear your opinions on."
At his call, the people present stopped pretending not to listen and openly gathered closer. Even Tsunade and Jiraiya temporarily quieted down.
Once everyone's attention was focused, Shikaku began explaining.
"I believe everyone here already knows that earlier today the Konoha Military Police Force, under the leadership of Captain Uchiha Ren, took control of several Root bases previously under Shimura Danzō's authority in order to collect evidence of his crimes."
"Captain Uchiha has already obtained some results. The specific details will be explained later during the Jōnin Council meeting after the Fourth Hokage officially takes office."
"However, there are several urgent matters that require immediate decisions."
"Next, Captain Uchiha Ren will speak."
After explaining the situation, Shikaku gestured toward Ren.
Feeling the gazes of everyone present, Ren showed no sign of hesitation.
"Everyone, after a full day of investigation by the Konoha Military Police Force, we have identified three urgent matters that must be addressed."
"The first concerns the children we discovered in Root's various bases."
"In total, we rescued more than a thousand children, ranging from several months old to around eleven or twelve years of age."
"Most of them were trainees being raised by Root as future operatives."
"The rest were test subjects rescued from various human experiments being conducted by Root."
"Our most immediate problem now is how to resettle these children."
The moment Ren finished speaking, the crowd erupted in shock.
The existence of Root trainees wasn't particularly surprising.
But the mention of human experimentation was something many present found difficult to accept.
Not long ago, Hiruzen Sarutobi had used accusations of human experimentation against Danzō during a previous Jōnin Council meeting, attempting to disqualify him from running for Hokage.
But Danzō had managed to evade the accusation at the time.
Now Ren's statement effectively confirmed those crimes as fact.
Ren continued calmly.
"Everyone, we'll leave Danzō's crimes aside for today. During tomorrow's Jōnin Council meeting, I will present them one by one so that we can formally judge and sentence him."
"Right now, the most pressing issue is how to handle these children."
He paused until the crowd quieted again.
"At first, I contacted Yakushi Nono, the director of the Konoha Orphanage, intending for the orphanage to temporarily house them."
"But after discussing the matter with Director Nono in detail, we discovered that most of these children suffer from severe psychological trauma."
"If they were placed together with the children already living in the orphanage, serious problems could arise."
"And the orphanage simply doesn't have enough staff to care for so many children."
Hearing this, many people present frowned.
More than a thousand children was indeed a major problem.
Tsunade, however, sensed something strange.
"Uchiha Ren," she said, "I can understand why the children rescued from human experiments would have psychological trauma."
"But what about the ones trained by Root?"
"Why would they also have severe psychological issues?"
"Is the situation really as serious as you're describing?"
Tsunade didn't ask this out of hostility.
She simply wanted clarification.
After all, training children from a young age to become shinobi was perfectly normal in Konoha.
Almost every shinobi clan present raised their children with similar preparation.
Even if Root's training was harsher than normal, it shouldn't cause psychological problems for every child involved.
Everyone turned their attention to Ren, waiting for his explanation.
Ren nodded slightly.
"As for the children rescued from human experiments, I won't go into detail. As Clan Head Senju said, they've lived through unimaginable suffering, so psychological trauma is understandable."
"But from what we've observed, their trauma may actually be less severe than that of the children trained by Root."
"Because no matter how severe their trauma is, they don't display aggressive behavior."
"All we can do for them is care for them patiently and allow time to heal their wounds."
"But the children trained by Root are different."
Ren's gaze swept across the crowd.
"Do any of you know how Root trains these children?"
Everyone shook their heads.
Ren didn't wait for an answer and continued.
"I won't go into detail about the ordinary aspects of their training."
"You only need to understand one thing."
"The intensity of Root's training programs is more than ten times greater than what you put your own children through."
A collective gasp spread through the crowd.
Most clans present trained their children from a young age—but they also understood the principle of not overdoing it.
Before the age of twelve, a child's body had not yet fully developed.
Excessive shinobi training during this period could cause serious harm.
That was why most clans only began introducing basic shinobi skills after the age of six, gradually increasing training intensity.
Only after twelve years old would serious training begin.
That stage was usually when a shinobi's strength began to grow rapidly.
Even prodigies like Naruto Uzumaki, Uchiha Sasuke, and Nara Shikamaru were merely newly graduated genin at age twelve, without a massive gap in ability compared to their peers.
Their true growth only began after several years of experience.
Even legendary figures such as Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju were just kids who could barely throw a shuriken across the river when they were twelve.
Forcing children into extremely intense training at an early age would only result in a few rare geniuses surviving.
Most ordinary children would suffer irreversible damage to their bodies.
At best, their potential would be prematurely exhausted.
At worst, they would develop chronic injuries and die young.
Danzō's training methods treated these children not as human beings—but as disposable tools.
Ignoring the shocked reactions around him, Ren continued.
"And that's only the lesser issue."
"The truly horrifying part lies in the special training programs Root created for these children."
"In my opinion…"
"They are nothing short of insane and utterly inhumane."
