Another week passed in a blink.

Over these seven days, Terumi Mei’s advances became even more aggressive and natural.

Every morning, before Kitahara Kaede even woke up, the clatter of cooking utensils would drift up from downstairs.

When he returned in the evening, Terumi Mei was in no rush to leave. Whether it was cooking, washing dishes, or tidying up the house, she always found something to do.

Two days ago, she had even walked off with Kaede’s laundry. By the time he realized it, his clothes were already soaking in a wooden basin.

Standing at the bathroom door, Kaede watched as Terumi Mei rolled up her sleeves, preparing to pour soap powder into the basin. His expression darkened.

"Put it down."

Terumi Mei looked back at him with a look of pure innocence. "What’s wrong?"

"I’ll wash them myself."

"I’m just helping you with a few small things. Why such a big reaction?"

"You call this a small thing?"

Kaede walked over and took the basin away. From then on, the first thing he did after changing clothes was to carefully put away his dirty laundry, lest she spirit them away again.

Even so, his life felt completely crowded by Terumi Mei’s presence.

Standing before the bathroom mirror, Kaede splashed some cold water on his face. He looked at his reflection. This was clearly his residence, yet Terumi Mei was now more familiar with where the cups were kept than he was.

If this continued, he feared he wouldn’t even find it strange if she simply moved in one day.

Terumi Mei’s voice soon called out from downstairs. "Kaede, are you ready? Come down quickly; I have something to tell you."

The familiarity in her greeting made Kaede’s mouth twitch.

"Coming."

He dried his face with a towel and headed downstairs.

Upon entering the living room, Kaede noticed that Terumi Mei seemed different today. Her usual smile was subdued, and a trace of seriousness had settled between her brows.

Kaede stopped at the foot of the stairs. "A mission?"

Terumi Mei looked up at him. "I just received orders from Elder Genji. It’s an urgent mission; I need to lead a team out of the village immediately. I might be back a bit late."

Kaede glanced at the ninja tools she had prepared and walked toward her. "What kind of mission?"

Then, he added casually, "Do you need me to come along?"

Terumi Mei’s heart practically bubbled with sweetness at his sudden initiative. However, she quickly regained her composure.

"No need. This is a confidential mission designated by Elder Genji. Bringing a Konoha Messenger like you would only arouse suspicion."

Kaede nodded, not pushing the matter. "Then be careful and come back soon."

This time, Terumi Mei couldn’t help herself, and a smile instantly bloomed on her face.

"Mm. In that case, don’t go to the office building today. Since you’re free, take a day off and wait for me at home."

With that, she grabbed her gear bag and stepped out the door.

After the door closed, Kaede stood in the living room for a moment. ’Wait for her at home?’

No matter how he thought about it, that phrasing sounded wrong.

An hour later, there was a knock at the door.

*Knock, knock.*

Kaede glanced at the clock on the wall. ’She’s back already? Did she forget something?’

He walked to the door and opened it. "Did you forget your—"

He cut himself off. Standing outside was a middle-aged ninja wearing a Kirigakure Jonin uniform. He had a square jaw and a stern expression.

It was Gonbe, one of Elder Genji’s most trusted confidants. Gonbe bowed his head slightly.

"Lord Kitahara, Elder Genji requests your presence."

Kaede didn’t answer immediately. Terumi Mei had just been called out of the village, and immediately after, Gonbe arrived. The timing was certainly coincidental.

However, that alone didn’t prove anything. It could truly be an emergency.

Kaede nodded. "Let’s go."

The two traversed the streets, heading straight for the office building. Gonbe led the way, remaining silent throughout the journey. Kaede didn’t ask any questions.

He mentally reviewed recent events. The most likely subject was Yagura. He had been in Kirigakure for over a month, but the plan had made no substantive progress. No matter how patient Genji was, he must have reached his limit.

Therefore, moving Terumi Mei out of the way likely meant Genji had something important to discuss with him.

Soon, they arrived at the office. Gonbe pushed open the door and stepped aside. "Lord Kitahara, please."

Kaede stepped inside. Genji was sitting behind his desk with several scrolls spread before him. Hearing the door, he set down his teacup and motioned for Kaede to take a seat.

"Have you grown accustomed to living in Kirigakure?"

Kaede sat opposite him. "It’s been very good. Chief Terumi Mei has been very thoughtful with the arrangements."

"And the food?"

"I’ve grown fond of it."

Genji asked a few more questions about the differences between Konoha and Kirigakure. Kaede answered as usual. They chatted for a long while, neither mentioning the actual purpose of the meeting.

Eventually, Genji stopped the pleasantries. He pulled a letter from his sleeve and placed it on the desk.

"This is an urgent letter that just arrived from Konoha. It is for you personally."

Kaede took the letter and broke the seal. There was only one line of text on the parchment:

"Nagato’s eyes have been stolen; Fu has disappeared!"

Kaede’s brow furrowed. Nagato’s eyes were gone? The Rinnegan had been taken! And Fu had vanished at the same time.

Back in Amegakure, he had suspected that person was problematic and had specifically reminded Pakura to keep monitoring them. It seemed his suspicions had been correct.

But who exactly was this "Fu"?

Kaede tucked the letter into the inner lining of his clothes. The most pressing matter now was to get back. Once the Rinnegan disappeared, the situation would spiral completely out of control.

Kaede looked up at Genji. "Elder Genji, I have an emergency. I must leave Kirigakure as soon as possible."

Genji wasn’t surprised; he simply waited for Kaede to continue.

"However, we cannot abandon the matter regarding Yagura," Kaede added. "If you are willing to cooperate, the operation can begin today. Once Yagura is dealt with and the alliance between Konoha and Kirigakure is formally completed, I will leave immediately."

Genji took a sip of tea. "Very well. I assume you’ve seen the latest defensive deployments around Yagura?"

"I gave that intelligence to Terumi Mei two days ago."

As he spoke, Kaede’s gaze lingered on Genji’s face for half a second.

Two days ago? Terumi Mei had never mentioned it. So, the latest layout had been in her hands all along.

Kaede pressed his tongue against his teeth, suppressing a surge of disappointment. Now was not the time to dwell on this in front of Genji. If the Elder concluded that Terumi Mei had delayed the operation for personal reasons, it would leave a terrible impression.

"She mentioned yesterday that she was verifying a new layout for the Mizukage’s residence," Kaede added naturally. "It’s likely the one you’re referring to. She probably just hasn’t had time to give it to me because this morning’s mission was so urgent."

Genji didn’t respond immediately. He held his teacup and looked at Kaede for a moment.

"I see." He set the cup back on the table. "The intelligence should still be in her office. Go check it first. I will gather those I can trust, and we will begin the operation in half an hour."

Kaede stood up. "Understood."

Without lingering, he turned and left the office. He quickened his pace and went straight to Terumi Mei’s office. He pushed open the door, stepped inside, and closed it behind him, his eyes landing on the desk.
