Just before Xi Menxiu’s knee had a chance to touch the ground, Yang Xiao reached out to support him, denying him the chance to acknowledge kinship, and said earnestly, "Xiuxiu, you’re playing this with me? Don’t you know I’ve already played these games before?"
Over the years, there have been rumors in town that Yang Xiao’s fast progress was entirely because he likes to acknowledge fathers wherever he goes.
Of course, Yang Xiao himself does not acknowledge these claims; these are rumors spread by shameless people, sour grapes from those who couldn’t get their hands on them.
In the quiet of the night, Yang Xiao counted on his fingers and found that at most, he had acknowledged less than five surrogate parents.
Even counting legends like Cannibal Buddha and Jiushan Cangxuan as elder masters, it’s less than ten. Yang Xiao has reached his current position purely through his own sweat and effort.
"Did you guys have dinner tonight?" Yang Xiao suddenly asked.
"No!" Xi Menxiu answered eagerly.
"Let’s go, pick a place you usually want to eat but can’t bear to. I’m treating." Yang Xiao took out a black card from his pocket and waved it in front of Xi Menxiu, almost entrancing him.
So the brothers responsible for night patrol at Lin’an Patrol Office witnessed a puzzling scene, Specialist Yang from the Provincial Bureau bringing a group of investigators, happily singing as they left Lin’an Patrol Office, shouting about lobsters and emperor crabs. They were too far away to hear clearly.
In the black SUV, Beibei was the driver, Yu Shu took the passenger seat, and Yang Xiao was squeezed between Xi Menxiu and Da Xiong in the back row.
Luckily, the SUV had ample space, so the three of them didn’t feel cramped.
Beibei drove straight to a hotel famous for its seafood, setting up six chairs as usual, and while eating, everyone chatted, regaining the feeling they had when working together.
Remembering Zhi Jie, Xi Menxiu, who had the deepest bond with Zhuge Zhijie, couldn’t help but tear up. While choking up, he swallowed a garlic vermicelli steamed lobster, saying this was Zhi Jie’s share. Now that Zhi Jie is gone, he wants to eat on behalf of his good brother.
"When Zhi Jie was here, you ate for him; now that he’s not here, you still eat for him. Aren’t you afraid he’ll come to you in a dream demanding lobster?" Beibei scolded.
"Then Zhi Jie’s share of the emperor crab can be yours." Xi Menxiu whispered.
"Alright, I don’t want it steamed, I want it with the typhoon shelter flavor." Beibei agreed.
Time flies amid the bustling noise. As his gaze swept over the round table filled with various high-end seafood and towards the empty chair draped with an old suit across from him, Yang Xiao, feeling tipsy, suddenly had an impression that Zhi Jie never really left, always staying by their side.
After the feast, Xi Menxiu slouched back in his chair, leaning to the side, leisurely picking his teeth with dental floss, occasionally burping, evidently stuffed.
Beibei, red-faced, was clearly drunk. Just earlier, she was holding a wine bottle, ready to stand on the table and showcase her newly learned "Little Tornado" down-in-one-go stunt. Da Xiong and Yu Shu barely pulled her down, saving her from embarrassment.
Yang Xiao took it all in stride as well, familiar with these people all being old brothers knowing each other’s background inside out. Each is talented, carrying unique skills. As Nalan Shuo said, besides work, anything goes.
But Yang Xiao saw it differently. They might slack off usually, but when things get serious, they step up.
Under his wise leadership, the investigative team of Lin’an Patrol Office solved some cases back then, earning merits.
Well-fed and satisfied, Xi Menxiu urged everyone not to leave as he arranged for the next event, chuckling to himself saying there’s an exciting program.
How exciting the program was, Yang Xiao didn’t know and wasn’t interested. No entertainment could be more enticing to him; he had business to attend to the next day and needed to go home and rest.
"Beibei, the lobster today was nice; take some home for the night shift brothers as a Ye Xiao." Yang Xiao instructed.
"Da Xiong, didn’t you hear the captain? Ask in the group, how many teams are staying at the office tonight." After Yang Xiao left, Beibei was naturally promoted to captain, now holding a high rank within the investigative team.
Honest and grounded Da Xiong wiped his hands clean then went to find his phone.
Hearing this, Yang Xiao wasn’t pleased. Patting the table, he shouted, "Why split into groups, how can they eat one lobster per group?"
Da Xiong lifted his head, looking at Yang Xiao puzzled, and asked cautiously, "Then captain, you’re suggesting..."
"You must be kidding, if the Chamber of Commerce and United Federation hears, they’ll think we can’t afford it, just a little bit, who can even eat it!"
"I want a hundred lobsters, one for each person, and if we can’t finish, we’ll continue tomorrow!"
Da Xiong paused for a moment before nodding repeatedly, "Got it, got it, I’ll... I’ll contact them right away."
Yang Xiao stood up and tidied up his collar, feeling particularly satisfied with the design of the small upright flip collar on the black uniform, "Tell the brothers staying behind to send some people outside to receive them, basic security checks should not be neglected."
"When I’m not here, the brothers have Ye Xiao pizzas; when I’m here, they’re still having pizzas. Was I even back for nothing?"
"Tell them, tomorrow night’s Ye Xiao includes emperor crabs, flavors of choice, report to Da Xiong before noon tomorrow, overdue won’t wait."
Hearing this, Xi Menxiu nearly cried out, "Captain, you shouldn’t be just a second-level full-time; you should go to the General Bureau, brothers are willing to serve you, in the future wearing the imperial robe, you have the demeanor of a Director of the General Bureau!"
It is well known that Yang Xiao is a low-key person. Although the brothers’ words made him feel good, he seriously criticized everyone, as such flattery must be curbed; it’s not what they practice in the Patrol Defense Office.
