"I know all of you are either married couples or unmarried partners, so this time we will operate as family units. This will help keep your identities concealed."
"First, I’ll arrange your departments and accommodations, I’ll call out the names now."
"Guo Tiejun, Feng Xiaoyan."
Chief Zhou called out, and a man and a woman immediately stood up. The woman happened to be sitting in front of Yang Xiao, her long, thick ponytail swaying.
"You will join the publicity department, living in Block 3, 2nd floor, Room 7 of the family quarters," Chief Zhou introduced, "Later, comrades from the living department will arrange everything for you."
"Wang Yong, Liu Hongwei, you will also join the publicity department, living in Block 4, 4th floor, Room 27 of the family quarters."
"Ma Jiefang, Chen Qiaoyun." Chief Zhou paused his gaze on Yang Xiao as he stood up, subconsciously frowning, but soon regained composure and advised, "You two will join our security department, serving as internal investigators."
"Understood!" Yang Xiao stood firmly, full of vigor.
It seems that in the context of this mission, he and Chen Qiaoyun are either a married couple or lovers; otherwise, they wouldn’t be arranged this way, needing to live together.
Yang Xiao didn’t really mind; he had a renowned reputation as a gentleman. He also had a good impression of Chen Qiaoyun.
Slight hair, she looked very capable. Her simple attire could not conceal her strong, commanding aura.
During previous case discussions, her questions were very targeted. Yang Xiao liked partnering with smart people.
"Zhao Xuehua, Hu Weimin, you two will live together, in Block 1, 2nd floor, Room 5 of the male staff quarters."
As soon as the words were out, the two men who stood up were dumbfounded. Even the others present were stunned, as previously the pairs called out were supposed to be couples or partners.
The next second, Yang Xiao clearly saw Zhao Xuehua and Hu Weimin exchange a look of disbelief, immediately redirect their gaze, as if to disassociate from each other, both wearing expressions as if they had swallowed a fly.
But Chief Zhou ignored this, continuing to call the names, "Zhang Xiaomin, Ma Jing."
With these two standing, four people among them had their names called out.
"I know you are two couples. Hu Weimin and Ma Jing were even introduced by Secretary Song, but for identity concealment, you need to separate this time."
"It’s not about hiding your couple status, but preventing enemy agents from detecting that your identities are unusual."
"As you all know, typically, newly arrived young comrades can’t immediately be assigned family accommodations. They need to queue and wait, temporarily staying in the single dormitory. I hope you understand." Chief Zhou inquired.
"Understood." The two nodded, after all, they were here for the mission, not to genuinely build a relationship.
"Zhang Xiaomin, you and Ma Jing will stay in Room 23, 1st floor of the female staff dormitory."
"Hu Weimin, you and Zhao Xuehua will also join our security department investigation team. Zhang Xiaomin and Ma Jing will join the plant infirmary. Is everything clear?" Chief Zhou’s voice grew more severe.
"Clear!" everyone answered in unison.
"Good, since that’s settled, I won’t say much more. You are all battle-tested warriors. I trust in your capability and loyalty."
"Due to your discreet identities, you cannot gather together. I’ve arranged the storage room on the first floor of the worker culture hall for you, as a place to discuss your cases. I’ve installed a phone there, which you can use to contact me at any time." Chief Zhou introduced.
"Time is short, do you have any questions?" Chief Zhou looked at everyone.
"I have one." Hu Weimin raised his hand, "I’m curious, since enemy agents have been confirmed, why are we assigned to the security department? Wouldn’t this alert them?"
"That’s an excellent question, but have you considered if such a critical case occurred, yet the security department showed no response at all, wouldn’t that be even more suspicious?" Chief Zhou countered.
"Don’t use your own thinking to judge the adversary, learn to think from their perspective." Chief Zhou stated.
"Alright then, if there are no issues, I will take my leave. You can stay for a short while, but remember to leave in batches, not all at once, understood?" Chief Zhou said sternly.
"Understood." Everyone replied.
With that said, Chief Zhou didn’t hesitate, turned to open the door, and left; the corridor outside was empty, no doubt arranged that way beforehand.
As soon as Chief Zhou left, the atmosphere in the room instantly changed, now it truly felt like they were among their own.
Everyone assessed each other, for a moment, no one spoke.
"Come on, what are you all posturing for?" Wang Yong patted the wooden bench and stood up, "From the looks of it, you are all veterans, stop dawdling, just say what you need to say, I’ll go first."
"Name’s Wang Yong, let’s just call it that to save me the trouble of creating a fake name, I’m a cop." Wang Yong introduced himself.
"Pfft." Yang Xiao couldn’t hold it in and burst out laughing.
As Wang Yong shot a disapproving look, Yang Xiao quickly waved his hand, indicating he meant no harm, "Don’t misunderstand, brother, I... wasn’t targeting you, I just suddenly thought of something funny."
In truth, Yang Xiao wasn’t lying. He really did think of something funny: every time someone pretended to be a cop, it turned out they were the worst of the lot and suffered the worst fate.
"Officer, how many missions have you completed?" someone asked, it was Liu Hongwei, who wore glasses.
"This is my third time." Wang Yong glared at Yang Xiao and replied.
"Feng Xiaoyan, art major, a university student, this is my second time." The girl seemed very young, still holding some naïve innocence, with a hint of unease in her eyes.
"Guo Tiejun, bar co-owner, third time." The man with slicked-back hair introduced himself, then looked to the next person.
"Liu Hongwei, cartoonist, this is my second time." The woman with glasses spoke, adjusting her eyewear, a habit that seemed to come naturally.
"Chen Qiaoyun, war correspondent, this is my fourth time." The short-haired, commanding girl confidently introduced herself.
"Hu Weimin, assistant researcher in biological sciences, this is my second time." The man looked shy, carrying a scholarly air.
"Zhao Xuejun, unemployed, third time." The man spoke carelessly.
"How do you manage being unemployed?" Feng Xiaoyan asked curiously, blinking.
"Is it not okay if I live off my parents? What’s it to you?!" Zhao Xuejun snapped.
Feng Xiaoyan was startled, taking a while to recover before quickly shifting her gaze away from the volatile man.
