Because Guo Tiejun and his group queued up relatively late, they could only stand at the back of the line, estimating that when their turn came, there would be no good seats available.
Earlier, Guo Tiejun had complained, saying that the world was full of opportunists, and this cinema judged people by their status.
The leaders and their families living in the factory courtyard never queued; they watched the movies whenever they wanted, with the best seats at the front always reserved for them, and the cinema arranged for staff to save seats for the leaders in advance.
But soon, a sudden unexpected event disrupted Yang Xiao’s plan. Yang Xiao saw someone wearing a Patrol Defense Office armband walk into the queue, find Liu Hongwei, say a few words, and then take her away.
Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng immediately followed them outside, discovering that it was Director Zhai, not Chief Zhou, who had come to take Liu Hongwei away.
"Director Zhai, what’s going on?" Yang Xiao caught up with Director Zhai, who was about to leave on a bicycle and asked.
"Nothing serious. Some matters from last night need her to record a statement. We’re heading to the health clinic. They said she had been taken away by you," Director Zhai calmly replied while looking at Yang Xiao’s face. "Once the statement is done, I’ll arrange for someone to send her back to the clinic."
Upon hearing the words "health clinic," Liu Hongwei, sitting in the backseat, instantly felt stressed. The last thing she wanted to hear right now were those three words.
In the end, at Yang Xiao’s suggestion, Director Zhai agreed to let Liu Hongwei spend the night in the duty room of the front factory’s security department, and arrange a new dormitory for her tomorrow.
"Thank you for the trouble."
Yang Xiao watched as Director Zhai and several others took Liu Hongwei away, and she still looked back at Yang Xiao and his group with some reluctance.
"Do you think her departure is a blessing or a curse?" Suddenly, Ye Zheng, who stood behind Yang Xiao, asked.
"I don’t know." Yang Xiao watched the silhouettes of this group disappear completely into the night, as if they would never return.
After Liu Hongwei left, Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng returned to the Cultural Palace hall. As the doors of the auditorium opened, the queue began to rush inside, creating a chaotic scene.
A middle-aged woman wearing an armband stood on a chair, holding a metal loudspeaker, constantly shouting at those queuing in the back, telling them not to push, everyone had a ticket, and everyone could watch.
With Liu Hongwei gone, only Guo Tiejun and Feng Xiaoyan were left in the cinema. Only when Yang Xiao watched them enter through the auditorium doors did he feel at ease.
Still trying not to appear too conspicuous, Yang Xiao used Ye Zheng’s money to buy two bottles of soda and a small bag of yellow sticky rice cake covered with brown sugar powder.
The stuff was still hot. Yang Xiao took advantage of the heat to eat one, and the texture was similar to the old-style sticky cakes he had eaten before.
Each of the yellow lumps had red bean paste inside, and Yang Xiao wasn’t paying attention and got quite a shock from the hot bean paste inside.
But he didn’t say anything, his expression remained normal, and he smacked his lips while eating.
"Is it that delicious?" Ye Zheng looked on, feeling envious.
"Just average." Yang Xiao shook his head. "I’m a bit hungry."
"Get lost, you just ate and you’re hungry again. Are you a pig?" Ye Zheng reached out to snatch the paper bag of sticky rice cakes from Yang Xiao’s hand.
Yang Xiao wasn’t paying attention, and the paper bag was snatched by Ye Zheng, who immediately grabbed a yellow lump and stuffed it into his mouth, showing a victorious smile while chewing boldly.
But the next second, Yang Xiao saw Ye Zheng stop chewing, his cheeks puffed up, his eyes turned red, almost on the verge of tears.
It was hot.
Yang Xiao then squinted and smiled.
Realizing he had been tricked, Ye Zheng threw down the paper bag and swung his small fists at Yang Xiao.
Soon, their seemingly sweet antics caught the attention of the patrol officer responsible for maintaining order, leading to a round of criticism and education, reminding them to mind their influence, as this was a public place, not their home bed.
"Didn’t I tell you it wasn’t tasty? You insisted on eating it." Yang Xiao squatted on the ground, sighing while shaking his head.
"How can you be so wicked? Did the Patrol Defense Office teach you this?" Ye Zheng was still complaining, his mouth burning as if a layer of skin had been scorched off.
Actually, Yang Xiao’s mouth also hurt, but he endured it and said nothing.
After this small humorous mishap, unbeknownst to them, both Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng felt somewhat relieved, the fatigue that had been tight for so long easing a bit.
As the movie began, Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng left the ground floor lobby and went to the second floor, checking each room, especially the game room that left them with shadows last night.
This time Yang Xiao was careful, when the door opened, he didn’t go inside immediately but pretended to tie his shoelaces outside the door, peeking into the game room through his legs. This time, there was nothing unusual inside.
Most importantly, Ye Zheng didn’t have the feeling of being watched that he had last night.
Entering the ballroom, where the lighting was dimmer, figures intertwined in the middle of the dance floor, and Yang Xiao couldn’t see anyone’s face clearly from a distance. The edges of the ballroom were hidden in a layer of vague darkness.
As usual, Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng circled the edges of the ballroom once, eventually finding Hu Weimin and Ma Jing in a noticeable spot.
It was evident that the two were very nervous, their vigilant eyes constantly scanning the dance floor and nearby areas.
The two were almost back-to-back, closer than any couple in the ballroom.
Though their behavior seemed odd, since it was a matter of life, Yang Xiao couldn’t say much and only gave a few words of advice before leaving with Ye Zheng.
After circling the second floor, they headed to the third floor, where Zhao Xuehua and Zhang Xiaomin were tasked with overseeing the area.
