Nightmare Apostle

Chapter 2136 - 1175: Injustice

"That’s great, please do it as soon as possible," Yang Xiao instructed.

As the reinforcement from the security department arrived and took over the scene, Yang Xiao and his group left, as they still had another mission tonight.

At the last moment of leaving the restroom, Yang Xiao paused and glanced back at the body still curled up; he knew very well this was just the beginning.

More people would die tonight; hopefully, it wouldn’t be him.

Exiting the Cultural Palace, the rain outside wasn’t as heavy as expected, but the night brought wind, carrying raindrops that pattered against their thick raincoats.

The group extinguished their flashlights, and under Chief Zhou’s leadership, they navigated along the narrow paths toward the abandoned bungalows.

The team was in a single-file line, each wearing a black raincoat reaching below the knees.

Nobody in the group spoke, and using flashlights was forbidden—a line of black shadows glided through the path, ghostly in the backdrop of a rainy night.

Just as they were nearing the designated location, Chief Zhou signaled them to halt. He quickly divided the team into three groups, each ambushing a different spot, clearly a premeditated strategy.

Following Chief Zhou’s arrangements, Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng continued with him.

With three people in their group, they took cover under an aged wall, about one-third collapsed, next to a crooked tree.

Chief Zhou directed Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng to hide in the dead space between the wall and the crooked tree, while he hugged the tree trunk, climbing up swiftly with both his arms and legs. He then lay low, using the densely leaved branches for cover, observing the target, waiting patiently.

Time ticked by, the night temperature dropped quickly. Short-term exposure was tolerable, but prolonged waiting left some struggling.

Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng huddled close, Yang could feel her body’s trembling.

"Are you doing okay?" Yang Xiao asked in a low voice.

"I’m fine," Ye Zheng replied through clenched teeth.

In the dim light, Yang Xiao noticed Ye Zheng’s lips had turned slightly pale from the cold; she wrapped herself tightly in her raincoat, curled up, yet couldn’t stop trembling.

Sustaining in such conditions was tough even for Yang Xiao’s robust physique, let alone someone like Ye Zheng.

She was the daughter of the Provincial Chamber of Commerce president, accustomed to a pampered life and not used to such hardships.

Yang Xiao admired her determination, but her body was rebelling, unable to endure this further.

Suddenly, Ye Zheng, caught off guard, felt a hand on her waist.

"What are you doing?" Ye Zheng was startled by the sudden contact.

"Shut up." Yang Xiao pulled her into his arms, adjusted their positions to make them more comfortable, and whispered in her ear, "Ye Zheng, you don’t want to freeze to death, right?"

"Don’t move, they’re coming!" Suddenly, Chief Zhou’s warning came from the tree.

Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng immediately peeked out, looking toward the bungalows, but the surroundings were dark and veiled by rain, revealing only vague black silhouettes, likely the buildings and tall trees yet to sight the target.

Since Chief Zhou mentioned it, the mysterious person must be here.

Perched in the tree, Chief Zhou had a natural vantage point.

Shortly after Chief Zhou’s alert, the area suddenly lit up with a small light.

It only lasted about 4 or 5 seconds before extinguishing.

But those few seconds were enough for Yang Xiao to confirm the visitor’s location—he faintly saw a figure standing at the far right side of the bungalows.

Before the room where a fire had struck, the visitor seemed to be lighting incense.

Indeed... he’s back!!

Initially, Yang Xiao wondered if the rain would deter them, but now he realized his worry was unnecessary.

This behavior indicated a deep connection between this person and the case.

He watched the person burn three sticks of incense, then kneel and bow, afterward stand, seemingly ready to leave.

"Chief Zhou, why are we not acting?" Ye Zheng urgently asked; if they waited longer, the person would be gone.

"Stay quiet, keep watching if there are any accomplices around."

After a pause, Chief Zhou softly explained, "I’ve already arranged people to follow him; he won’t get away."

Although Yang Xiao suspected there weren’t any accomplices, Chief Zhou and the team didn’t know, and Yang couldn’t reveal that.

Concerned about Ye Zheng’s endurance, and after enduring for a few more minutes, Yang Xiao suggested that the two of them head back, which Chief Zhou approved.

After Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng quietly sneaked away, a rustling in the grass not far from Chief Zhou’s tree revealed a shadowy figure stepping out.

The person looked up at the crooked tree, "Chief Zhou?"

"How did it go?" Chief Zhou appeared to anticipate the arrival, asking calmly, without a hint of panic.

"Per your instructions, Old Ding and his group tailed the guy to the old workers’ quarters. They watched him sneak into unit 6 without turning on the lights," the man under the tree replied.

"Unit 6... Sun Fendou?" Chief Zhou asked suddenly.

"It should be him! That guy’s always been sneaky; I’ve suspected him for some time. Didn’t expect he’d actually collude with enemy agents," the man grumbled through gritted teeth.
