Three days’ march through the hills east of Hawk-Wing Ferry brought the caravan to a river-valley terrace called Red Cliff Slope, where they made camp.
The land here was nothing like what had come before. The Nile’s east bank was all bare red sandstone and low scrub. The river narrowed by nearly half at this stretch; the current’s speed and cutting force ran a full four-tenths stronger than in the middle reaches. The riverbank cobbles had been tumbled smooth of every edge. Where the West Bank’s sandbars had been littered with sharp-angled black sedimentary slabs, and White River Ferry had yielded egg-shaped igneous rocks, here the ground was interbedded fine sand and ochre siltstone — step on it and your foot sank half a finger-width, and the cart axles had to be cleared of grit every hour.
Red Cliff Slope took its name from the towering red-sandstone cliff that rose along the valley’s eastern side. Millennia of wind and rain had eroded the entire face into layered folds, so that from a distance it looked like a stack of ochre slabs tossed aside by a giant, and from close up you could make out the ultra-thin partings of white mica between the sandstone bedding planes, flashing a cold silver-grey glint in the sun. For one hour before every sunset, the low western light struck the cliff face and set the whole mass ablaze in deep red; the river surface caught the same rust-tinged shimmer, as though the Nile had been boiled to molten copper along this stretch. A species of small falcon — grey-feathered, white-bellied — nested year-round in the cliff’s weathering hollows and wheeled above the rock face in flocks at dusk, their cries compressed by the valley’s narrow topography into layered echoes. At first hearing, a whistle. On closer listening, stone chips striking each other.
The caravan arrived in the worst heat of the afternoon. The June sun hammered down on the Nile’s east bank with no mercy. The fine sand on the river flat baked hot enough to feel through straw sandals — the heat surged upward into the soles of the feet. The carts’ wooden wheels ground through the sand with a dull shush-shush, like a blunt knife dragged across a whetstone; with every revolution, a spray of fine grit flew off the outer rim and peppered the cart-pushers’ calves, searing enough to make the skin flinch. Meru walked at the head of the column. His coarse linen tunic had been soaked through with sweat and sun-dried, soaked and dried again, across repeated cycles. The salt stains on his back mapped an irregular white continent, glinting faintly under the sun. Every half-hour he had to pull the Alliance station map from inside his tunic and check the well positions — this terrace might spread wide open before the eye, but its usable water sources were desperately limited. Only one spring existed, a thin seep hidden in a thicket at the cliff base, its yield not even four-tenths that of the well at White River Ferry. The sandstone around the spring’s mouth had been polished slippery by years of seepage; a skin of dark green moss covered it. One misplaced foot fetching water and you slid into the thorn-scrub beside it.
The moment he reached the terrace, Kamon ordered every water-skin gathered and pooled. He had managed harsher water rationing than this on the West Bank, so the situation held no surprises for him. He divided the skins into three groups: the first was drinking reserve, rationed per head per day; the second was mortar-mixing water for the carts, sealed under cover, no one permitted to touch it; the third was emergency reserve — if the next station’s well ran dry ahead of schedule, the entire column would have to survive on this supply for at least a day and a half. Everyone else would drink from the cliff’s seepage holes. The water dripped from the sandstone fissures one drop at a time; filling a single skin took nearly half an hour. The water ran faintly yellow, carrying an extremely subtle tang of iron — astringent on the tongue but not bitter, though after swallowing, a residue of stone-dust so fine you barely sensed it clung to the root of the tongue. Mery drew a small tube-sample from the bottom of the collecting skin with a reed pipe and held it up to the sun. Suspended particles were extremely few; after settling for half an hour, the upper water ran clear as glass. This meant the sandstone layer’s filtration was better than expected — the water would not affect mortar mixing. He noted this observation at the very bottom of his ever-denser horizontal comparison chart. On that chart, Red Cliff Slope’s water quality was entered into the column marked "suitable for direct mortar mixing" — one grade higher than Hawk-Wing Ferry’s water.
Lu Zhu chose the campsite. He walked the river valley twice — the first circuit following the river flat from north to south, testing the sand-layer softness with every heel-strike. At the narrows where the river constricted, he halted and studied the spot a long time: the sandstone riverbed here had been cut by the current into a narrow slot nearly three cubits deep, the rock walls on both sides smoothed as though by repeated whetstone passes, which told him the water’s speed and cutting force at this point far exceeded any other stretch upstream or down. The second circuit followed the cliff base from south to north, every step punctuated by his knuckles rapping the sandstone to judge by echo whether the rock mass held voids or fractures. On the eleventh rap, the echo abruptly turned from dull to hollow. He marked an X on that rock face in charcoal — a dangerously weathered hanging slab directly above a seepage fissure, where a single hard rain might trigger a rockfall. Two circuits completed, he stopped on a slightly raised sandstone platform about fifty paces from the cliff. This platform’s base was a solid interbedded siltstone, a good cubit and a half above the surrounding river flat; even the Nile’s rare autumn storm-surge would not flood it. The surface wore a wafer-thin crust of iron — the natural hardpan formed by iron minerals in the sandstone migrating surfaceward over centuries of wet-dry cycling. Stepping on it produced a faint hollow ring, like tapping a thin drum buried underground.
Behind him, the four apprentices each carried a bundle of palm-fiber rope and tent pegs. They did not stand in random spots — this was the habit they had naturally formed after following Lu Zhu for so many stations: Seb stood at the outermost edge, facing upstream, watching the approach from the valley; Hapy stood beside the carts, one hand resting on the crossbar of the foremost cart; Kes stood on the slightly lower edge of the platform, already testing the gradient beneath his toes; Mery stood closest to the cliff, back to the wind, eyes narrowed at the color difference between the sandstone layers on the rock face. They waited for Lu Zhu to fix the position before driving the first peg — this was the unspoken understanding they had built from the moment they left the West Bank: when Lu Zhu stopped speaking, every step of his feet carried measurement, and no one needed to ask why, only wait for his heels to settle.
Seb drove his tent peg into the sandstone surface and felt a resistance utterly unlike any previous station. The West Bank’s riverbank soil was soft — one hammer-blow, the peg sank half a cubit. White River Ferry’s terrace was sandy clay — three blows to set the peg, and it held firm. Here, three finger-widths below the sandstone surface lay a hard calcareous cemented layer; the peg-point struck it like a potsherd, the shock buzzing up through the webbing of his thumb. One blow and the peg-point skidded across the cemented surface, leaving a shallow white dent no larger than a fingernail. He did not force it. He crouched, scraped the crushed sand from the peg-hole bottom with his fingers, and found the calcareous cemented layer’s surface densely filmed with an ultra-thin coating of iron-manganese oxide — the chemical signature left by the groundwater table fluctuating at this elevation over untold years, its color nearly two full shades darker than the overlying sandstone. He measured the relative height difference between the four peg positions with his palm-fiber ruler. The platform surface, which had looked level, actually carried a micro-tilt of nearly two finger-widths from the northwest corner to the southeast — the result of millennia of prevailing wind pouring into the valley from the east, sinking along the cliff face, and scouring the terrace surface in a single direction. He did not hurry to raise the tent. Instead, he first drew a micro-topographic map of this platform on palm-paper, marking every peg position’s actual elevation at its corresponding corner point. Then, at the lowest southeast corner, he drew a short horizontal stroke and beside it wrote a single word: "Drain." Only then did he look up at the sun, already sunk to the cliff’s mid-waist. Its light cast a diagonal shadow from upper right across his drawing — a shadow that happened to fall with the drain-line stroke he had just drawn dead in its center. He paused for an instant, then added another line beside that stroke: "Drain outlet must not be sited in perennial shadow zone — moisture re-infiltration rate will exceed solar evaporation rate by over seventy percent."
Hapy pushed the carts one by one from the river flat up to the terrace. The fine sand on the flat offered far greater resistance to the wheel-axles than at any previous station — the wheels sank half a finger-width into the sand, and every shove demanded a hard thrust from the outer thigh muscles. By the third cart, the old injury on the outside of his right knee was starting to ache dully — the legacy of a loose gravel block that had struck him during his first independent quarry-face opening on the West Bank. He did not stop to rub the knee. Instead, after shoving the third cart to the terrace edge, he looked back at the wheel-tracks across the sand flat. The ten carts had pressed ten ruts of varying depth into the sand. The deepest happened to be the one left by the third cart — the one he had pushed when his right leg was aching. He drew a rough cross-section diagram of the wheel-ruts on his lime-tablet, annotated the relationship between different load weights, wheel-sink depth, and the cart-pusher’s force application. Then he walked to the fourth cart and redistributed the gravel sacks on it: the heaviest red-sandstone sample blocks were shifted from the tail to the head, concentrating the center of gravity over the front wheels to reduce the rear wheels’ sand-sink. After the shift, the fourth cart pushed noticeably lighter; its wheel-track pressed barely half as deep as the previous three. He filed this away in his mind: "On fine-sand surfaces, shifting load forward approximately two-tenths reduces sink depth by one-third — cost is accelerated front-axle wear, requiring sand-clearing every half-day."
Kes and Mery were tasked with building the cook-fire. The valley terrace offered nothing resembling proper dry kindling. The thorn-scrub by the cliff base ran grey-green; pinch a stem and it oozed a faintly bitter green sap — utterly unburnable. The river flat was strewn with driftwood splinters washed down from upstream and sun-dried, but each piece was so small you could close a fist around it, the wood fiber rendered loose and porous by the long alternation of sun-soak and water-immersion, light as a fistful of dried reed stalks. Kes sorted these driftwood chips into three piles by thickness — the finest crumbs for tinder, the medium splinters for the fire-frame, the few thickest stub-branches reserved to feed the fire through the deep night. He did not size them by eye. He pinched each chip between thumb and forefinger at one end and watched the angle at which the other end drooped to judge the wood-fiber density — the steeper the droop, the denser the wood, the longer it would burn. His father had taught him this in their Nubian homeland: the wood of a tree decided how long it would burn a fire when it was still a sapling; thickness had nothing to do with it. Mery laid a bed of flat oval cobbles gathered from the river flat at the bottom of the fire-pit — a technique he had picked up from the old granary clerk while keeping night watch at the Barley Hill official granary: cobbles stored heat slowly but released it evenly; after the fire burned down, the stones would continue radiating stored warmth for half an hour or more, still warm to the touch. Beneath the cobbles he spread a layer of dry straw scavenged from the carts — not for kindling, but to prevent the cobbles from making direct contact with the platform’s sandstone surface, since too sharp a temperature differential would cause the sandstone face to spall.
By the time everything was pitched, dusk had settled in. The valley wind poured down from the east along the cliff face, carrying the dry heat the sandstone had radiated all day under the sun; it scraped across the face like coarse linen — not painful, but a steady, insistent pressure. Below the terrace, where the river narrowed, the rapids gave off a continuous low roar — not the splash-and-gurgle of water, but a deeper, almost geological thrum, the sustained bass note of flowing water cutting a slot through a sandstone riverbed across millennia. Now and then a loosened rock tumbled in the current, striking the riverbed with a few crisp knocks, like someone far off striking a stone anvil with a stone hammer. On the far western bank, the dunes faded in the dusk to a blurred line of grey-blue silhouettes, stretching north to south like the spine of some vast recumbent beast. The last band of light in the sky drained from rust-red to pale violet, then to deep grey; then, as though smudged by a thumb, the whole western sky snapped to a uniform dark blue — the peculiar speed of a desert sunset, no gradient between light and dark, as if a thin gauze had been peeled away.
Meru lit a small oil lamp at the camp’s outer edge. The valley’s gusting wind tore at the flame, stretching it long then short, throwing the shadows of the surrounding carts against the sandstone cliff like a troupe of gaunt dancing figures. He was forced to build a semicircular windbreak of three stones around the lamp-base — and Seb, crouching nearby, watched this for a long time. Not the windbreak itself, but the trajectory of the flame as it was bent by the recirculating air current trapped inside the stone wall: first the flame bowed under the return-eddy slipping around the wall’s left side, then it snapped upright under the gust tumbling over the wall’s top; at the moment the two currents converged inside the enclosure, the flame went still for the span of two or three breaths, then resumed its dance. Seb drew a top-down view of the windbreak in his notebook and annotated beside it: "Semicircular windbreak opening should be oriented perpendicular to the prevailing wind direction; wall height must be at least twice the flame height — below this threshold, the airflow spilling over the wall-top will snuff the flame." He finished the last character and looked up at the distant cliff, now wholly swallowed by the dark. He heard Meru not far off say something to Kamon that sank in his chest like a stone: "Three more stations ahead and we hit the gravel-plain interior — every well there takes four men on a relay rope just to pull enough water for the whole column."
The caravan rested on the terrace for two days. Not because the road was hard. Because Lu Zhu had made a decision.
He had used a full seven stations to observe before making it. From the West Bank settlement’s parapet crenellations to Hawk-Wing Ferry’s gravel interception band — at every halt, he had done the same thing: taken each of his four apprentices’ independently completed work, pulled it out separately, filed it separately, and measured it against the modern civil-engineering knowledge system in his own mind. He knew these four could not stay forever as his assistants on one old road. Each of them had developed his own feel, his own judgment. Each of them had, in some direction, taken one more step forward than the others. He was not training four assistants. He was pushing every apprentice toward the division of labor where each was most gifted. But he also knew that assigning directions was not something you decided on a whim. It required enough data points: enough independent surveys, enough autonomous judgments, enough decisions made without the master’s instruction — and made right.
During those two days of rest, Lu Zhu shut himself inside a natural sandstone hollow at the edge of the valley terrace. The hollow was a cavity half a man’s height, gouged out of the cliff-base sandstone by wind-driven sand. The entrance was so narrow you had to turn sideways to squeeze through, but the interior opened unexpectedly — roughly three paces square, the floor level, a natural diagonal fissure in the ceiling admitting light. The beam fell precisely onto a flat stone surface at the center, a ready-made stone skylight. On this stone surface, Lu Zhu spread out every piece of work the four apprentices had produced since leaving the West Bank. He laid the palm-paper sheets out one by one, sorted them, compared them, and wrote judgments and classifications beside them in charcoal. The temperature inside the hollow was at least five degrees cooler than outside. The sandstone absorbed sound; the valley wind’s howl and the river’s roar, upon entering this space, collapsed into a muffled background hum — so quiet that Lu Zhu could hear the tiny scratch-scratch of his charcoal passing over the palm-paper fibers, like ants crawling over dry leaves.
The first record-book he sorted was Seb’s. From that first diagram of parapet height versus slope at the West Bank’s perimeter wall, all the way to the Hawk-Wing Ferry gravel interception-band design — with, in between, supplementary notes on the defensive sentry-post layout at the Front Field Ferry camp, and the first draft of the Sinu house riverbank wall-base inclination survey (the third version had been redrawn once, the two earlier discarded drafts kept by Seb himself at the back as scratch paper). Lu Zhu compared the three versions and saw that each revision was not correcting a prior mistake — it was pushing the measurement benchmark one layer deeper. The first version had used eye-estimated height differences; the second added palm-fiber ruler positioning; the third now incorporated the influence coefficient of seasonal water-level fluctuation. This person’s mode of thought was not vertical patchwork — it was horizontal overlay, each new layer adding a fresh reference dimension on top of the previous benchmark plane. On the title page of Seb’s record-book, Lu Zhu wrote two characters: "DEFENSE LINE." Then crossed them out and wrote: "WATER LINE." Then crossed that out too and wrote: "BOTTOM LINE."
Next came Hapy’s material batch-number tables. The thickest stack of the four — not because he wrote the most often, but because he had drawn every single thing along the route into his numbering system: riverbank cobbles by seven grain-size grades from largest to smallest; red sandstone by three color-depth zones after sun-drying; cart gravel-box loading specifications improved three times between the West Bank and Hawk-Wing Ferry; every pre-improvement parameter crossed out in charcoal but never blacked out — you could still read the original numbers through the strike-through lines. The first time Lu Zhu saw this document, he froze for a full breath. A full-chain material-control system of this kind, on a construction site in his previous life, either ran on a computer system or depended on a warehouse veteran with fifteen years of experience relying on gut feel and memory — and this seventeen- or eighteen-year-old had built, from scratch, a complete manual archival system covering everything from raw-material sorting to transit stacking yards. He turned to the page where Hapy had improved the cart weight-distribution scheme at Sinu’s house. There, Hapy had drawn a simplified side cross-section of a cart, calculating the volume, weight, and loaded position of the three cargo boxes — heavy-material box, stone-material box, tool box — and their respective eccentric load moments on the left and right axles under different road conditions. His final conclusion: "Shift the stone-material box forward toward the front axle by half a cubit; line the inner wall with a palm-fiber mat for thermal insulation — the left-right axle temperature differential can be held within half a finger-width." This analysis, placed in a modern context, was at minimum first-year engineering-assignment level. On the title page of Hapy’s batch-number tables, Lu Zhu wrote a single word: "PROVENANCE."
Then came Kes’s settlement-planning sketches and soil-survey records. Kes’s notes held the highest drawing-to-text ratio of the four — he disliked writing long blocks of verbal explanation; whatever could be expressed in lines, he would not waste a single extra character. From the West Bank’s settlement functional-zone division sketches to his charcoal drawing of every soil-stratum profile in the humus-layer foundation at Sinu’s house — the line density of every drawing was progressively increasing. More lines, denser intersections — but the pauses he took between drawing each line were decreasing. Lu Zhu turned to the Sinu house page. There, Kes had drawn a cross-section of a three-layer composite drainage cushion, annotating the grain size and thickness of each stratum from crushed brick and potsherds down to coarse sand, with a water-seepage arrow drawn at the bottom of the section. The note beneath the arrow was just a few characters: "Where external drainage level exceeds foundation plane — not permissible." Lu Zhu turned the page over and saw that Kes had revised this sentence through several versions. The first draft read "must not exceed the foundation"; the next, "drainage level must not exceed the foundation plane"; the final version was distilled to five terse characters. Reduction — not a poverty of vocabulary, but the stripping away of everything that was not necessary. On the title page of Kes’s record-book, Lu Zhu wrote a single word: "CLARITY."
Last came Mery’s official-granary indicator tables. The driest-looking stack of the four — no drawings, no cross-sections, no elegant scale bars. Line after line of nothing but numbers: the Barley Hill official granary’s foundation height differential, the left sidewall nearly half a finger higher than the right; the statistical deviation of the gravel moisture-barrier thickness at Sinu’s private granary, the southeast corner nearly four finger-widths thicker than the northwest; the humidity variation inside the Hawk-Wing Ferry official granary during the hour before and after the narrow windows were opened at dawn — all field-measured raw data, dense as an account-book. But the further Lu Zhu read, the slower he turned the pages. Mery had done something none of the other three had done: he had placed every single granary he had measured — across different geographical locations, different building typologies — into a single horizontal comparison chart. The horizontal axis was a timeline (ordered by when each granary was built or renovated); the vertical axis held every physical indicator (foundation height differential, narrow-window height, humidity fluctuation, moisture-barrier thickness, wall-corner seepage-point location). Not one data point existed in isolation — they cross-referenced each other, explained each other, and together projected the most universally applicable moisture-proofing design parameters across different climate zones and storage capacities. This was no longer record-keeping. This was the first hand pushing experience toward the road of public standards. On the title page of Mery’s indicator tables, Lu Zhu wrote a single word: "STANDARD."
With all four record-books sorted, Lu Zhu spread a fresh sheet of palm-paper and began writing the four apprentices’ specialization benchmark table. As he wrote, he reviewed in his mind every detail of these four from the West Bank to this point — not only how they behaved on the work site, but the small things unrelated to any work site. Seb, sleeping at Barley Hill in the middle of the night, had placed beside his pillow not a water-skin but his palm-fiber ruler. Hapy, before the storm broke at White River Ferry, had run onto the riverbank and covered every small cobble with linen, himself soaked to the skin. Kes, seeing a great riverside tree toppled by flood — others walked around it; he stopped and, on the exposed root cross-section, drew the relationship between root distribution and soil composition. Mery, each time he passed an official granary, circled around to the back to look at the wall base, regardless of whether it was his project — a habit he had never mentioned to anyone. A whole afternoon passed. The light through the diagonal fissure dimmed; the temperature inside the hollow dropped another half-degree. At last Lu Zhu picked up four individual specialization-direction sheets, checked them one by one, corrected them, and finalized them. He was not assigning tasks. He was planting road-signs on roads the four were already traveling.
After the evening meal, the campfire on the valley terrace blazed high; sparks rode the rising heat-column eastward toward the sandstone cliff, staining the rock face a deep red glow.
Before Lu Zhu called everyone to gather around the fire, the four apprentices each passed that dusk — their last not knowing what direction they would be given — on the terrace. In those hours, no one imagined what they were about to hear. They were simply doing what they habitually did, and every one of those actions, in retrospect, pointed with precision toward the specialization each was about to receive.
Seb, at the terrace’s north end near the cliff base, found an old sand-pit dug by a fox. The pit was not large — about two cubits deep — and its walls exposed three distinct layers of deposition: windblown fine sand at the top, a middle layer of dark red siltstone fragments with high iron content, and a calcareous cemented hardpan at the bottom. These three layers corresponded precisely to the natural water levels of the Red Cliff Slope valley during flood season, normal-water season, and dry season. Seb crouched at the pit’s rim, measured the thickness of each layer upward from the bottom with his palm-fiber ruler, and drew in his notebook a simplified revetment cross-section for this stretch of valley. As he drew, a small incident at Hawk-Wing Ferry surfaced in his mind. The evening before departure, he had walked alone down to the river bend downstream of Hawk-Wing Ferry to check whether the river loading platform’s pile foundations had shifted after a night of current-scour. He followed the bend for nearly half an hour and discovered that the reed beds along the bank were scattered with large quantities of broken brick fragments washed down from upstream by floods. The fragments varied in size and shape, but each one, upon being swept into the bend, had come to rest along the same direction, at nearly the same water-level line — the equilibrium line of the bend’s back-eddy current. The fragments had piled into a natural arc-shaped ridge at that waterline, the ridge height in synchrony with the river level’s minor fluctuations. Seb had stood on the bank for nearly half an hour, then crouched and measured the distance from the ridge crest to the water’s surface with his palm-fiber ruler. That distance, he found, was exactly the additional height the Hawk-Wing Ferry loading platform’s pile foundations required — calculated not from the absolute height of the flood peak, but from the perennial stable equilibrium line of the bend’s back-eddy. He had told no one at Hawk-Wing Ferry of this finding. He had merely written the record silently at the very edge-corner of his defensive-works drawings — and that height-addition figure was now tucked beneath the bottom of the Red Cliff Slope revetment height-differential diagram on his knee, awaiting recalibration.
Hapy, on the terrace’s south side in the cart-parking zone, was alone, rechecking the gravel-box numbers on all seven carts. The grading-number system he had set up when they left the West Bank had three tiers: stone type, grain size, source location. But as they replenished new stone at every station along the route, he had discovered that stone of the same grain size, depending on its collection site, carried non-negligible deviations in sand content and water-absorption rate. White River Ferry cobbles had a water content nearly three-tenths lower than the West Bank’s red sandstone, while a newly quarried batch of limestone fragments at Hawk-Wing Ferry had surface alkalinity higher than stone from any previous station. A three-tier number was no longer enough. He needed a fourth tier: a chemical-activity marker for the stone. He opened every gravel box on all seven carts, scooped a handful of gravel from each, spread it on a lime-tablet, then wet his fingertip and rubbed — high-alkali gravel warmed slightly when water-rubbed; high-iron gravel began rusting the moment water touched it. He spent an entire dusk re-numbering every box with four-tier batch codes, then wrote a quick-reference table of each new code’s corresponding stone properties on the side plank of every cart in charcoal. After he finished, he leaned against the fourth cart’s wheel and took a drink of the iron-tinged warm water. A memory from White River Ferry came back unbidden. Half an hour before the storm broke that day, he had been on the riverbank directing the villagers in the last round of sorting graded cobbles into the standard stack zones. An old villager had walked up to him, holding two identical-looking black cobbles, and asked: "Which of these two can be used for wall-foundation bedding stone?" Hapy had taken them and weighed them in his hands. The left one was slightly heavier; cracked open, it was dense blue-grey basalt. The right one was slightly lighter; cracked open, it was grey-white carbonate sedimentary rock that fizzed faint bubbles on contact with water. He returned the light one and placed the heavy one in the qualified pile. The old villager asked how he knew. "The two stones ring different when you strike them," Hapy had said. "The heavy one rings like a broken potsherd hitting the ground — crisp, deep. The light one rings like dry wood rapping a tile — hollow." The old villager understood. From that day forward, he began using ring-tone to do preliminary grading of cobble load-bearing grades on the riverbank. Every page of those receipts recorded the shift hours and door-and-window opening/closing habits of the granary clerks at each station. The reason Meru had never handed these data to anyone was simple: he did not know what significance they held for building improvement. Now he knew. In Mery’s indicator chart, he saw the same type of horizontal comparison format as his own warehouse receipts. He placed that stack of receipts on the stone slab beside Mery’s cart, anchoring the corner with a cobble — not a handover, but a warehousing entry. From this moment, the Alliance’s logistics data began flowing toward the direction of building-design universal standards.
After distributing the directions, Lu Zhu folded the four sheets — not handing them to each apprentice for separate safekeeping, but placing all four apprenticeship records together into a single palm-leaf archive pouch, as was his habit. The pouch mouth was not labeled, merely clamped shut with a thin, rough-surfaced red-sandstone flake picked up from the edge of the Red Cliff Slope river valley. All four apprentices simultaneously looked down at the specialization-direction sheet in each other’s hands — not to compare length, but to find the interfaces where they could help relay each other’s work: the starting point of Seb’s camp defense line connected to the flow bottleneck at the south-end drainage outlet of Kes’s settlement; a new marked line appeared at the oblique intersection between Hapy’s stacking-yard slope-foot and Seb’s sentry-zone positioning; Mery and Kes would share one indicator box for the remaining road — the former drawing the moisture-source cross-section beneath the granary floor, the latter completing the drainage-flow path where the well-bottom groundwater table would connect upward. They had not yet begun collaborating on the next leg — but each one’s finger was already pressed onto the extension-line handoff arc of another’s drawing.
The four apprentices sat encircled around the campfire, its light falling across the drawings spread on their knees. Seb spread his valley revetment height-differential drawing to the left until its edge just touched the edge of Hapy’s stacking-yard gravel-grading diagram. Kes raised the floor elevation of the inset storage silo by two finger-widths; the draft was already too smudged to trace the stroke order, but the chamfer arc he left on every page’s corner was still a cleanly discernible Nubian palm-bow curve. From the distant valley water, the sudden splash of a fish leaping broke against a piece of driftwood at the cliff-root’s edge — but he did not look up. He merely marked the spot where that leaping fish had landed on the downstream side of the narrowest point: here, the downstream surface most often turned over; the bank-side roots were least stable; no pile could be set.
No one asked "what should I do" anymore. Their drawings each lay on the ground, facing their respective directions — but from drawing to drawing, connections still held: Mery’s grain-storage indicator zone linked Hapy’s stacking-yard microclimate temperature chart; Kes’s humus-layer settlement records cross-referenced against Seb’s camp elevation benchmarks. This system was not called "project management." It was merely what happened when a generation of apprentice craftsmen, after turning over their master’s sketches and manuscript notes a thousand times, began generating their own baseline grid. The valley wind blew in from the east, snapping the corners of the drawings on their knees — but not a single sheet blew away. Every one of them had a hand pressing down exactly where it needed to press.
Late into the night, the campfire slowly subsided. The cobbles at its base had begun releasing the heat they had stored for a full hour — a gentle, even warmth radiating against the knees and insteps of everyone sitting around the circle. Mery’s cobble heat-storage layer was working: though the flames had dimmed, the ground was still warm. The moon climbed above the cliff’s back and washed the entire terrace in a thin layer of pale lime-dust. The sandstone cliff, so fiercely rust-colored under the noon sun, now turned a quiet, faintly violet dark-grey mass. The valley wind eased down too; the dry-hot downslope wind that had been pouring onto the terrace from the east since sundown had now fully withdrawn. In its place, a thin veil of water-vapor rose from the river’s surface — barely visible, but you could catch it in the nostrils. Its scent was different from the iron-mineral tang of the daytime: clean, carrying a cool moist-sand smell, like the scent given off by the layer three finger-widths beneath a riverbank that never sees the sun.
Seb rolled up his revetment height-differential chart and slid it into the palm-leaf tube in his tent — a tube whose shell he had made himself by laminating three different palm leaves gathered along the road, pressed and glued, the shell’s interior lined with a thin layer of reed peel stripped from the White River Ferry riverbank, to keep the palm leaves’ plant oils from seeping into the drawings. He stood the tube upright against the tent pole and turned half his body toward Hapy, setting down his palm-fiber ruler — not quitting work, but shifting state. The firelight carved the contour of his profile. His cheekbones were sharper now than when they had left the West Bank — not from losing weight, but from all the soft edges of his face being pulled away by months of bowing his head over drawings, leaving only the bone. He spoke first.
"I used to think defense was high walls and deep moats — the higher the better, the deeper the better. Today, after I drew that drain-outlet position, I understood. Your approach — clearing the way works better than blocking it. Corner water and it finds another path. Guide it instead of stopping it — and it follows the drainage route you drew. Defending against people is the same logic. You can’t just build walls. You have to predict where his next step will land — and block the road before he reaches your entry point. But keep this between us tonight — don’t tell those old stonecutters over there. They’d say I’m using wall-defense tactics to handle rainwater."
Hapy lifted his head from beside the cart wheel, holding the last diagonal line he had just drawn on a sample strip, the line’s end connected to a rough distribution sketch of dolomite outcrops on a scrap of coarse cloth. He had half a dried date in his mouth — Meru’s evening dry-ration — and his words came out a bit muffled, but the tone was unusually earnest: "Then from now on, when you go design a camp defense line, you have to show me your drainage-outlet drawings in advance. Don’t let me find out you’re draining south while I’ve sited my stacking-yard gravel on the north side, thirty paces between them — until my cart cargo boxes are half-soaked in standing water." He paused, swallowed that half-date, then drew on the blank of his lime-tablet a diagram smaller than a fingernail — a square for the camp, a curved line for the drainage direction, a small circle for the stacking-yard position. He studied this diagram briefly, then added a set of dashed lines between the three symbols, linking the drainage direction and the stacking-yard’s micro-gradient, a small drainage-plane arrow beside the dashed line. "I’ve thought it through. From now on, the layout of every station’s stacking yard has to be checked against your drainage path in advance. I’m not poaching your work — I need to pre-position a gravel slope-foot on your outflow direction to catch the scour-water, so the mud slurry doesn’t wash out the bottom row of my standard sand-sample bags. Wherever you drain the water to, I’ll lay an extra half-course thickness of scour-resistant gravel there." Seb tilted his head at the diagram, considered for a moment, and shifted Hapy’s dashed-line set half a finger-width to the left, then added a small water-level differential marker beside the shift. He did not explain out loud, because Hapy understood at a glance — the half-finger-width shift was to avoid the potential collapse zone of that hollow hanging rock Seb had discovered at the cliff base that afternoon, the one whose void echo he had heard on the eleventh rap. Two people, on a sketch no larger than a palm, completed their first informal division-of-labor coordination.
Kes sat a little further off, back against the cart’s sideboard, both legs stretched flat on the terrace’s sandstone surface. He was the most relaxed of the four — not because he carried no burden, but because after drawing contour lines all day, the valley’s now-stable night air had leached the ache from his wrists. The contour-line sketch in his hands was now overlaid with a skin of moonlight, which turned every charcoal-drawn contour line into a translucent grey-silver — and the few lines he had written in his largest charcoal, "Valley Settlement Drainage System — Vertical Planning First Draft," stood blackest under the moon, so black they nearly seemed recessed into the paper. He held the drawing up to the moonlight and studied it a while, then suddenly laughed under his breath — not at anyone else, at himself: "If my father were here right now looking at this drawing, he’d probably say, ’You drew the ant-mound slope unnaturally — an ant mound’s slope is never symmetrical. The windward side is always at least two-tenths gentler than the lee side.’ I hated hearing him say things like that back then. And now look — in the drainage system I’m designing, the left-right height differential on every slope face isn’t uniform, and the reason is exactly the same principle as my father’s ant-mound slope: the windward face evaporates fast, so the drainage channel runs toward the gentler face; the leeward face evaporates slowly, so the adobe has to be raised to prevent ponding. The earth’s natural mounds and man-made drainage gradients — the underlying algorithm is the same. I thought when I drifted from Nubia to Egypt I had left all of that behind. Now I find it’s been squatting at the very bottom of every design I’ve made, the whole time."
Seb did not answer. He was only silent a moment, then used his charcoal to draw an extremely short, straight line at the margin of his own drawing — the field-ridge line of his family’s land, the day his father was taken. After drawing it, he looked at it once, blackened it out, and continued drawing the revetment’s drainage slope-direction.
Mery had been leaning against the sandstone boulder this whole time, his comparison chart — now so dense there was barely any blank space left to write — spread flat on his knees. He was much quieter than the other three. After Seb finished speaking, Mery merely tapped the boulder’s surface lightly with the tail of his charcoal — a single soft click — signifying that he had heard, and understood, but was not going to touch that subject with words at this moment. After the silence, he suddenly spoke. His tone was flat, unworked: "I’ve been thinking — our four directions have been split apart, and a lot of people might see that as a closing period. But while filling in my chart, I realized that to fill it in properly, I don’t just need my own data. I need the jujube-tree desiccation-characteristic data for the next station from Kes" — (note: jujube root water-absorption causes shifts in the nearby groundwater table) — "I need Hapy’s stacking-yard daily temperature-variation curve" — (note: stacking-yard microclimate’s influence coefficient on adjacent granary wall-base humidity) — "and I need Seb to first draw that revetment-instability warning line on the camp’s flood-defense drainage-direction plan" — (note: the angle relationship between revetment seepage volume and near-shore storage wall-base moisture content). "If this chart of mine is going to be filled in completely, it can’t do without any one of you three." Mery said this without raising his head to look at anyone. But his finger tapped each of the four corners of the indicator chart — upper-left toward the position of Kes’s tent, upper-right toward Hapy’s cart convoy, lower-right toward Seb’s tent peg, lower-left left for himself. It was not a deliberate gesture, but all four saw it at the same moment. Kes spoke first: "Show me the data chart. Let me check the root-offset values against whether the same tree species is present near your listed official granaries — if the trees are different, you can’t use the same parameter set for your offset annotations." Seb added, right on his heels: "The stability standard values for the revetment warning line — I’ve already drawn them on today’s rough sketch. Use them for now. After I finish formal surveys at three more stations, I’ll give you a more precise corrected value." Hapy was the last to speak — his muffled voice came from behind the cart: "The temperature data — I’ll finish measuring before sunrise and get it to you. I need to run one more comparison for the maximum-differential window between pre-warmup and post-sunrise. Once it’s done, I’ll leave it on the left side of your cart’s tool box."
No one said "all right," because no one felt they would not do it. These promises needed no verification. They had already been loaded into the sequence of action.
Lu Zhu was not beside the campfire now. He sat on the terrace’s edge, on a cobble further from the others than any, his back to the cliff, facing the darkened valley to the west. His left leg was stretched straight on the stone surface; his right foot rested on a round red-sandstone cobble he had picked up from the river flat to test its color. The stone was so uniformly rounded it did not look like the water-worn roundness of riverbank cobbles — more like a solitary rock abraded by windblown sand over centuries. After setting the four apprentices’ directions, he had walked off alone and sat at a distance — not to plan the next move toward the gravel plain, but to watch the four drawings beside the campfire, their surfaces constantly reshaped by the shifting firelight. His angle was not the same as the four apprentices’. He was not counting how many new tools were now in each pair of hands. He was examining the internal assembly of the tool system — camp defense lines, material supply, settlement drainage, storage moisture-proofing — and how its pieces interlocked. In his past engineering understanding, a construction site did not run on four independently strongest trades. It ran on a load network composed of mutually nested interface surfaces. If Seb’s defense line did not dock with Kes’s drainage system, it would flood. If Kes’s settlement did not dock with anyone’s grain-storage-facility configuration, it would be an empty shell for habitation. If Mery’s granary designs lacked Hapy’s precise building-materials supply, they could not unlock universal structures. If Hapy’s materials, however excellent, had no camp and storage terminals to use them, they would be nothing but a yard full of numbered gravel. This system, on the four sheets of paper beside the campfire, had barely formed its embryo — but missing one single interface, and the whole system would collapse back into the scattered-artisan mode of each man fighting his own war. It would not be a complete building system. He tossed the red-sandstone cobble lightly upward and caught it. The stone’s temperature had by now merged with the night air’s coolness — cool to the touch, the concentric fine striations worn into its surface by windblown sand visible under the moonlight like a contour-line map engraved by nature itself. He set the cobble on his knee aligned with the distant campfire glow. The four apprentices, seated around the fire in their respective orientations and proportions, shared a shape with the division-of-labor layout diagrams he had studied on construction sites in his previous life — a correspondence that transcended time. This was not coincidence. It was the practice of one generation of craftsmen being understood by the engineering experience of another.
The last night at Red Cliff Slope receded slowly, between such firelight and such moonlight, into the deepest stillness of the river valley.
