By Lu Zhu’s second dawn on the high ground, blisters had worn through the skin at his heels. Four blisters in all — one on the ball of each big toe, one on the inside edge of each heel. Their positions corresponded exactly to the stride-and-crouch rhythm of yesterday’s test-bore survey: lungs expanding as the probe went in, ribs pulling taut as the rod came out. The blister on his left big toe was the worst — a thumbnail-sized raised dome of translucent white skin, the fluid inside faintly yellowish. The one on his right heel had already burst — caught on the burred edge of the sounding-rod’s tail-end during the deep-bore push, the wound’s rim now ringed with a dark scab of dried blood, the raw red flesh beneath. The two on his heels were the deep kind, the kind that throbbed with every step, a warm, liquid shift sliding between the callus and the skin. He noted the blister positions on his coarse-linen record cloth, then wrote a small annotation beside them: "Acacia-fiber fine-linen cloth strips for the feet. Remember."
By the time the wilderness heat turned brutal — that hour when the sand around the encampment baked so fiercely it threw off a blinding white glare, the air above the ground warping like boiling water until the high ground’s edge seemed to dissolve into mirage — the camp had receded to a low, indistinct swell on the horizon. It looked no taller than a man’s knee from here, its surface dotted with a few last-season stalks of desiccated acacia and a single lean-necked acacia sapling. Only up close did you realize: the high ground was vastly larger than expected — over a thousand cubits north to south, more than eight hundred east to west. And its surface was not flat. It rolled in a succession of wave-like undulations, each trough cut by an old river channel — shallow, shallow scars in the earth, all oriented northeast-to-southwest, all perfectly parallel to the ancient Nile riverbed that ran alongside.
"Master — the soil on the high ground has layers." Seb was crouched in one of those shallow troughs, a handful of sandy soil clutched in his palm — scooped from the bottom of a test bore. His position sat exactly where the trough line intersected the northern slope, and even through the coarse linen of his trousers he could feel a thread of hot, damp warmth seeping up from the ground. He spread the soil across his palm, using a fingertip to work through it — sorting and crushing with the practiced motion of a man who has done this a thousand times — then held it up to the light to study the grain-size distribution. "It’s coarse sand. Stains the fingers yellow-brown the second you touch it. High clay content. Low organic matter."
Lu Zhu walked over, took the pinch of soil, and rubbed it between his fingers. The sensation was crisp, granular — coarse sand, as Seb had said. High moisture content, low organic matter. He lifted it to his nose. A faint, stale scent rose from it — the odor of long-submerged plant matter rotting in the anoxic deep, mixed with a sharper, mineral tang: the smell of ancient groundwater, still seeping, still dissolving, after who knew how many centuries. The wilderness’s organic layer was thin — painfully thin — so thin you could miss it if you weren’t paying attention.
"There’s an old river channel under the high ground," he murmured, more than half to himself, and wiped his hand on his trousers. The lower half of his trouser-leg was already stained with a palette of earth colors: ochre, rust-brown, gray-white. "This high ground isn’t one solid block — it was carved apart by ancient channels, then covered over by windblown sand. We’re standing on a buried floodplain." He stamped the ground underfoot. The sand beneath the crust compacted with a low, muffled thump — the sound of pore-space collapsing under sudden pressure. "How thick the alluvial layer is, I can’t say yet. But it’s certainly shallower than the flat plains downstream — because the high ground hasn’t been submerged long enough for the warping to settle, so the void ratio is high."
"Can we build on it?"
"Depends on what we’re building. If it’s light frame on a coarse-sand mat — yes, the load spreads fine. But if it’s heavy masonry —" He stopped. "You’d have to dig down to the cemented hardpan, break it out, ram it, and lay a rubble course. No other way."
Seb nodded. He didn’t ask further questions — just carefully packed the soil sample he had just collected into a small coarse-linen pouch. Tied to the pouch was a palm-fiber tag, inscribed with a code. Every sample from every test bore had to be numbered, each number corresponding to a position on the survey map. All of it catalogued, all of it preserved.
On the other side of the high ground, Kamon and Kes were setting up a water-level gauge benchmark. Their rig was a crude affair — a jury-built tripod of palm timber and lashed cord, the legs planted in sand, a water-level sighting-arm rigged across the top. The arm was a length of old ship’s planking, salvaged from who-knew-where, its top surface scored along its length with a fine copper-wire groove. The wire was anchored at both ends by riverbed cobblestones, its mid-span sagging naturally into a perfect vertical plumb-line. The device looked slapdash — a far cry from the polished bronze water-clocks of the Theban Royal Works Institute. But its plumb-line was gravity — and gravity did not lie.
Kes stood behind the tripod, sighting with one eye along the water-level arm toward the north. His brow was furrowed in a faint, concentrated frown. "Kamon — it’s off. Pull the mark a hair east. No — a hair and a half. Good. Now lock the baseline bearing — don’t move, don’t move, right there —" His voice was low, level, each command delivered with a precision that had nothing to do with rank and everything to do with a man who had learned that a measurement was either right or it was not, and that the space between those two poles was not a spectrum but a void.
Kamon squatted at the base of the tripod, tapping a wooden wedge into the sand. The wedge’s front edge had to be absolutely flush with the ground surface — he pulled it out twice: the first time, it had gone in crooked, off by half a finger-width, and he reset it; the second time it was flush, but off by the width of a little finger; the third time, he drove it home dead level, the wedge-top and the sand surface so perfectly flush that a fingertip run across the join felt no step at all. Then he notched the wedge with a small cut — a registration mark, establishing exactly where the jig would sit. Eighteen such water-level benchmarks now formed a chain across the encampment and the high ground, linking the high ground’s summit to the riverbank sand-flat — and each one was a survey control point, an anchor driven into the earth. Miss one, and the chain broke.
Lu Zhu watched them from a distance, but did not walk over. He had learned that Kes no longer needed anyone standing at his shoulder when he was calibrating. The boy had developed a feel for the instrument — and, more importantly, a growing intolerance for interference with it.
The sun had begun its westward slide by the time they finally got what they were waiting for.
"Master — I’ve finished the first set of samples." Seb walked over, a probe caked in mud and clay balanced across his shoulder. He sat down heavily on a chunk of rock, then began laying out the sample pouches from his carry-sack — a row of four palm-fiber tags, each marked in charcoal: "North-shallow," "North-deep," "South-shallow," "South-deep." The probes had sampled soil from four different locations, at different depths, along the high ground’s axis.
"These bores give us a rough profile of the ground beneath the high ground." Seb drew a simplified stratigraphic diagram in the dirt with his finger. "Top layer — mixed coarse sand and gravel, thickness varies between two and four cubits. It’s patchy — some places crumbly, some places hard, some places loose — all of it suitable for bearing, but with the gravel it’s a pain to compact." His finger moved downward. "Second layer — gray-green clay, thickness highly variable. Anywhere from a finger’s width to a cubit and a half. That’s the trouble layer. Its distribution is uneven — thin at the north end, nearly absent; thickens toward the south, then suddenly thickens right under the great temple’s proposed site. And the boundary isn’t smooth — it’s abrupt, jagged, exactly at the south end of the temple footprint." His finger traced further. "Below that —"
"What is it?" Lu Zhu asked.
Seb tipped out the contents of the last sample pouch — it wasn’t clay. It was a hard, dense, flaky stone, sandwiched between grains of sand: a nodular limestone marl, its color a reddish-brown tending toward dark ochre. The stone flakes, pressed between the fingers, crumbled — and the fracture faces were razor-sharp. This was the kind of stone a probe would bite into and refuse to go deeper — and when you pulled it out, the core barrel flared, cracked, nearly split.
Lu Zhu took one of the stone flakes and held it up to the late-afternoon light. The stone’s edge glowed with a faint, translucent amber — the hallmark of iron oxides precipitating out of groundwater over long ages, staining the rock from within. The color told him this was a cemented hardpan — formed when the old river channel, before it dried up, deposited fine silt and dissolved minerals into the sediment, and millennia of compaction and groundwater chemistry fused it into a dense, stubborn crust. Harder than the marl above. Harder to dig. But also — far more stable. Its bearing capacity and settlement resistance were leagues beyond anything in the overlying layers.
"This is it," Lu Zhu said, dropping the stone flake back into Seb’s sample array — by now, Seb had already arranged several dozen sample pouches into a rough grid: saline-alkali crusts from different depths, a pinch of coarse sand, a handful of weathered sandstone fragments collected at the high ground’s foot. "The bottom cemented layer — that’s the bearing stratum. The problem is, it’s not deep enough. And it’s not continuous — it sits above the coarse-sand and gravel layer, the very top of the mixed zone. If we lay the foundation directly on it, once the full dead load of the building settles in, the structural weight will transmit straight through this hardpan into the weaker layers below. So — a two-stage compacted foundation: a course of graded gravel-and-sand fill above the hardpan, and a rubble moisture-break beneath to block heat transfer into the ground. The rubble course’s thickness — roughly a third less than what the traditional method would call for. That saves stone. And it saves time — not a trivial amount."
Seb’s eyes brightened — but the light quickly banked. He did not say "that’s wonderful." In all the time he had worked under Lu Zhu at the West Bank, he had learned one lesson above all: never call anything "good" before every last piece of data had proven it so.
"There’s still an issue with the middle layer," he said. "If the gray-green clay’s actual thickness doesn’t run all the way through to the hardpan — then, if that clay is saturated long-term, a slip-plane forms between the coarse sand and the hardpan. Once a slip-plane forms, settlement is no longer uniform. Half the building sinks onto coarse sand — the other half, the half that sits over the clay, barely settles at all. Even a structural wall built on differential settlement like that will crack at the mid-span."
Lu Zhu looked at him, and the corner of his mouth moved — just barely, a tiny, almost imperceptible upward lift, more the ghost of a smile than the thing itself. "You’re right," he said. He pointed to the stratigraphic diagram on the ground, drawing a line exactly at the boundary between the coarse sand and the clay. "Then our foundation solution isn’t just an exercise in adding and subtracting thicknesses. And right now — the data we have can’t yet give us a thickness. We need a graded transition layer — inserted between the coarse sand and the clay. A crushed-stone and coarse-sand mix — the stone skeleton carries the upper load, the sand fills the skeleton’s voids. Together, they form a rigid plate — spanning over the soft clay layer, bridging it. That plate will spread the structural load, and the differential settlement the clay causes will be dispersed by the rigid plate — no localized bearing failure." He wrote a single character at the center line: "Transition."
Seb studied the stratigraphic diagram on the ground, tracing and re-tracing the lines, committing them to memory. "The crushed stone — the stone chips from the quarry’s finished-block trimming — the coarse sandstone offcuts, the spalls. The chip size has to be small — if the pieces are too big, the carters at the quarry won’t be able to haul enough in one trip."
"The quarry has waste basalt flakes. When I was scouting the quarry boundary the day before yesterday, I saw them — weathered, fractured basalt spalls at the foot of the rock face. They’re no good for wall stone — the dimensions are wrong. But for foundation infill, the grading is nearly perfect. A single screening pass, and they’re ready."
"What about the gravel specification? Gradation range? Maximum particle size? The allowable limit — who sets it?"
"Seb."
Seb froze. His hand, holding the next sample pouch, tightened — his knuckles stood out white against the stone dust caked on his skin. He lowered his head, the muscles along his jaw working, and then he said, very quietly, "I’ll do it." Three syllables, each one set down as carefully as a stone block laid into a wall — level, plumb, unwavering.
Even Kamon, standing off to one side, noticed. He turned to Kes, who was still beside him checking the water-level gauge, and said in a low voice, "That boy’s becoming a real engineer."
Kes was in the middle of running a verification on the copper-wire baseline — he had just re-tensioned the wire, adjusting for the half-finger-width drift he had caught earlier. "What did you say?"
"I said — Lu Zhu’s people — there isn’t a single one who can’t stand alone."
That night, Lu Zhu stayed at the survey station in the shelter, drawing. He worked until the encampment’s bronze bell rang the third watch. The night air had already turned cold — the hour when, on this wilderness, the heat of the day surrendered all at once to a dry, penetrating chill. Only one person remained at his side. Mery had come by earlier, bringing the water-level records, and had stood at the door-flap for a long, silent while — his lips parted as if to speak, then closed. He saw Lu Zhu’s head bent over the drawings, the charcoal moving without pause. In the end, Mery simply set the water-level record down on a flat stone beside the paper, pressed it flat, and slipped out through the reed-mat door without a sound.
Lu Zhu had spent the entire afternoon transferring the high-ground survey data onto a fresh sheet of papyrus. Eighteen test bores — each bore’s number, coordinates, depth, soil gradation, water content — all of it inscribed in charcoal. Then, from that data, he drew two cross-sectional profiles. One north-south — running the length of the high ground from the northern summit to the southern foot. One east-west — cutting across the palace-district and great-temple proposed sites at their respective positions.
Where those two cross-sections intersected — that was the future location of the great temple and the great hall.
He was just finishing the second cross-section when the shelter’s door-flap was pushed open. A gust of wind — carrying the wet, mineral smell of the riverbank — blew in and set the oil lamp’s flame guttering.
Mery stepped in. He brought with him the whole scent of the riverbank: wet sand, the green-sweet odor of water-plants, and beneath it all, the faint, clean tang of river water itself. He had spent the entire day at the riverbank, walking the gauge line, his face wind-chapped, his lips cracked to peeling. He handed Lu Zhu a long strip of coarse linen covered in water-level readings, then found a flat stone and sat down.
"The water-level gauge records are done," Mery said, tracing the figures on the cloth with his finger. "I set survey points every hundred cubits from the river-harbor mouth, all the way to the high ground’s northern foot — palm-bark acacia-wood posts, anchored with riverbank cobblestones. The posts hold better than driven stakes in this ground — the riverbank here is pure loose sand; driven stakes would wash out in the current or split at the tip. These are the first set of data." He pointed to a column of figures midway down the cloth. "The elevation difference between the riverbank flat and the high ground’s foot is seven and a half cubits. The height from the flat to the survey station at the high ground’s summit is six cubits. At the peak of the seasonal flood, the water level rises to roughly here —" his finger moved to a mark scored into the stone — "that mark was cut by the river current itself, into the rock, over who knows how many floods. I cross-checked it against the old records. The peak flood line basically reaches three and a half cubits above the flat. So —"
"The stretch of riverbank flat that lies beyond that flood line — that’s the northern boundary of the new capital’s safe building zone." Lu Zhu had already traced the position on the survey map.
"Right." Mery’s finger moved to continue, but Lu Zhu was already ahead of him. "That’s only half of it. The great temple’s proposed site — along with the southern residential district — sits entirely above the flood line. But here’s the problem. If the flood-control dike is built north of the residential district — it will squeeze the entire residential zone southward. That means the drainage mains between the residential district and the flood-dike have to be realigned. It means more fill. It means more labor."
Lu Zhu was silent for a moment. He set aside the topographic map he had spent half the day drawing and, with a charcoal stick, began sketching on the blank sheet of the full-city plan. The charcoal turned a slow circle between his fingers — the same habitual motion he always made while thinking. He drew a rectangular block at the northern high ground — the palace and great temple proposed sites. Then, from that block, he drew a long, straight line — twelve cubits wide — the main arterial road. When he drew that line, his hand was utterly steady — one stroke, end to end, no pause, no waver. The arterial ran to roughly the midpoint of the site, where it stopped. From that midpoint, branch roads fanned outward: east, southeast, south, southwest — each one a feeder, each one following a different drainage gradient.
"The palace district — here, on the northern high ground. The great temple — southeast of it, bordering the river. Access to water transport, proximity to the palace, and well clear of the flood line. The commoners’ residential district — the low platform to the west," he drew a large block on the survey map, "standard AT-type dwellings, grid-planned. The southern end — the river harbor." His charcoal traced a dense cluster of blocks at the southern tip. "The central district, between the great temple and the harbor — the market and goods-distribution zone. And further south —" He stopped. The charcoal hovered over a blank patch on the southernmost edge of the map. He hesitated. Then, in that space, he drew a small, rectangular block — square, solid. He did not measure it with a ruler. He spread his hand flat against the papyrus and laid his fingers along the line — once, twice, three times — and each time, the line fell under the same span. That was its width. Beside it, he wrote two words: "Reserved Medical Hall." And beneath that, a single word: "Imset." He did not yet know what form the building would take — only that it would be what Imset had once described to him in the Sennu-house courtyard: a medical hall dedicated to healing, with an attached pharmacy for compounding and dispensing, modest in scale but anchored at a position that mattered — tucked between the great temple and the commoners’ residential quarter, so that in the event of an outbreak, it could supply medicinal support to both districts simultaneously.
He looked at that small block, and nudged its position half a finger-width north. The line of patients that had stretched before Imset’s makeshift clinic came back to him — the way Imset had worked through the night, compounding and dispensing, his movements heavy with exhaustion yet somehow, impossibly, unwavering. That small block — that was where Imset belonged.
Mery followed Lu Zhu’s finger to the block and, for a moment, was silent. He understood. Back at the West Bank, Lu Zhu had once said: wherever people gather, epidemics will break out. The new capital would, from its very first days, draw laborers and merchants in swelling numbers. Without clean water, without sanitation, without quarantine — dysentery, influenza, and every other contagion would sweep through the camps. And that was the optimistic scenario.
Mery did not pursue the topic further. Instead, he pulled a large sheet of coarse linen from his carry-sack — he had spent the whole day at the riverbank, logging observations, and had also sketched a rough map of the riverbank terrain in the same hand. On it, he had noted what he called the "wild water levels" — nothing more than a few crooked charcoal lines. They were the flood-mark traces he had read from the rocks at the riverbank: the waterlines left on the stone by generations of floods. The marks were old, faint, contradictory — every flood’s trace contradicted the last. Mery had cross-referenced these oral fragments — the remembered histories of a dozen different riverbank settlements — against the physical waterline evidence on the rocks, and from the tangle he had extracted a coherent set of flood boundaries: the ten-year line, the twenty-year line, the fifty-year line.
"At the peak of a major flood," Mery said, tracing a sweeping, flared shape with his hand over the stone slab, "the floodwater will linger longest on the riverbank flat behind the northern dike — because the north-bank terrain there forms a natural shallow basin, shaped like a crouching beast, with four fingers holding back the water. The retention time is long — enough to store a lot of water. If our drainage system can channel the floodwater that pools in that basin into the Nile within four watches of the crest, the riverbank flat won’t flood. But if the system can’t handle the volume — the flood will back up into the southern residential district."
Lu Zhu leaned forward slightly at this. He said nothing — only motioned for Mery to continue.
"The rim of that shallow basin follows a natural contour — a low ridge. It’s roughly three and a half cubits high, and over two thousand cubits long." As Mery spoke, he pulled out a sheaf of papyrus from his carry-sack — cost estimates, scrawled in his own hand, for every segment of dike, every sluice-gate, every labor-gang. "I had a rough look at the numbers. Building the dike with riverbank stone and gravel — the materials cost is negligible; we can quarry all the stone we need from the riverbank itself. The labor — about sixty men for fifteen days. But here’s the thing — once the dike is built, the floodwater that pools behind it becomes a natural forebay reservoir — it’s the equivalent of digging a detention basin that would take thirty days or more to excavate. We’re getting it for nothing. The riverbank gave it to us. All we have to do is raise the dike’s footing — the foundation — by three and a half cubits, and the whole residential district stays dry."
Lu Zhu turned to look at Mery — this boy who, not long ago, could only frame his thoughts in terms of costs and losses, was now laying out an integrated flood-control plan, complete with cost estimates and hydrological analysis, supported by his own survey data. The old Mery would have stopped at "how much does it cost." This Mery had learned to ask: "What does the cost buy us, and is there a cheaper way to get the same result?"
"The dike work — start preparations tomorrow," Lu Zhu said. "I’m giving you thirty men. First, build a trial section on the north side of the high ground to observe how the floodwater actually scours the dike face during the seasonal rise. We don’t know how fast the riverbank sand will erode under sustained flood flow — nobody does. The trial section has to survive one flood season without undercutting the dike’s toe. If it holds — it’s proven safe. If it doesn’t — we find out now, not after we’ve built the real thing."
Mery’s eyes snapped wide — then, very firmly, he nodded. "Thirty men. I’ll pull a shift-leader from the riverbank work gangs. The riverbank men — they’ve been through floods before. The rest — I’ll take from the camp laborers. The wilderness has no shortage of idle hands these days."
Night fell. The footsteps outside the shelter grew sparse. The cooking fires had been banked, and the darkness began to press inward — one slow wave at a time, the silence of the wilderness after dark seeping through every gap in the reed matting. Lu Zhu laid the drawings he had finished side by side: the full-city master plan, the high-ground stratigraphic profile at the great-temple proposed site, Mery’s water-level records, all of them in order, a riverbank cobblestone weighting down the stack’s corner.
The oil lamp burned on beside him — its flame steady in the dark, no flicker. He did not rise. He sat in the stone shelter, listening to the night wind threading through the reed-mat gaps, and felt a faint, fine grit settle on the back of his hand. The wind from the eastern dunes was blowing in now — carrying fine sand that sifted through the coarse-linen roof cloth, a barely perceptible, persistent whisper against the skin. In the distance, faint voices — the night-watch team changing shifts, the low murmur of someone calling out to a companion across the dark. Far off, a night bird cried twice from the distant roof-ridge of the encampment’s main shelter.
Tomorrow, the framework of the great temple and the great hall would take shape on Sobekh’s desk. The day after, this patch of wilderness would become a sheet of paper marked with the grid-lines of a fully planned, fully dimensioned city.
He closed his eyes. What drifted through his mind was not the master plan — it was the house back home. The ventilation window in the south wall — its position should have been set a fraction further south, to catch the prevailing wind. The summers there were damp, the Nile’s humidity pressing in for weeks on end; in winter, the air turned fine and dry, the skin of the hands tightening with every breath. He had meant to fix that window — to adjust its angle by a few degrees, so the cross-breeze would carry off the stale, oil-tinged air that always hung in the room when he worked late over the stove — but there had been no time. There was always something more urgent. The window’s misalignment had stayed in his mind all this time — a small, stubborn splinter he could never quite extract.
Next time he went back — he would fix that window. He would close that one small gap between what he had meant to do and what he had actually done.
He paused. Outside, the wilderness was utterly silent. In the stillness, he could hear his own pulse — a low, steady rhythm in the hollow of his throat. Then he lay down, and the fine grit sifting through the roof cloth settled over him like a second blanket.
