"The barbarian. He will keep the promise he made you. I saw it in the way he looked at you this morning, and in the way he refused to take this empire by force even though he could have. That kind of restraint is rare. Hold to it."
"I will."
"And when the sky breaks, and the devils come, you will stand where you choose. Beside him. Beside me. Or in front of both of us if that is what the moment demands. I will not chain you to any single place again."
Misha’s fingers tightened slightly.
"I already know where I will stand."
"I know you do."
Kane waited outside the war room.
The corridor was cooler than the chamber he had just left, the stone under his boots worn smooth by generations of boots that had never belonged to a man like him.
Morning light filtered through narrow slits high in the walls, painting thin bars of pale gold across the floor.
He stood with his back to one of the pillars, arms loosely crossed, the familiar weight of Mjolnir resting against his shoulder.
Inside, Misha and her mother were speaking. He had given them the space. Some conversations could not be shared.
Soft footsteps approached from the side hall.
Thora walked up and stopped beside him. She did not speak. Her long dark hair had been pulled over one shoulder in a thick braid that still carried the scent of the outdoor training yard, leather, cold air, and the faint metallic note of steel.
She stood close enough that he could feel the tension in her posture, the way her shoulders sat a fraction too straight.
Kane turned his head and looked at her.
He took in the set of her mouth, the slight tightness around her eyes, the way her gaze stayed fixed on the far end of the corridor rather than meeting his.
"What is it?"
"Nothing."
"Okay."
The single word landed between them without challenge.
Thora’s head snapped toward him, eyes widening for a moment in disbelief.
She had expected him to press, the way most men did when a woman claimed nothing was wrong.
Instead he accepted it and returned his attention to the closed door of the war room. After a beat she nodded once, almost to herself, and faced forward again.
Kane smiled, small and knowing.
"Thora."
"No. Chief. It’s stupid."
"Nothing that makes you sad is stupid," he said. His voice stayed low, meant only for her. "Tell me."
She looked at him for a long moment. Then her gaze dropped to his leg, the same leg that still carried the faint scar from the early days in Lain’s camp, the place where she had once bound a wound with strips torn from her own shirt while the rest of them slept.
"I know we barbarians do not have a tradition of marriage," she said at last. The words came carefully, as if she had turned them over many times before allowing them out.
"We just go with a man and expect him to stay loyal or stand beside him until we die."
Kane said nothing. He waited, giving her the silence she needed to finish.
"But... maybe because I was with you from the beginning, I... just thought I was more than a sex figure to you. Like... maybe we share something."
The admission hung in the air of the corridor. Thora’s jaw was tight. She had never been a woman who asked for words. She had fought beside him, bled beside him, taken him into her body in the dark of northern tents without ever demanding a title.
That she was speaking now told him how deep the quiet doubt had settled.
Kane turned fully toward her.
"You are more than sex," he said. "You are the beginning, Thora. Why would you think like that?"
A small smile appeared at the corner of her mouth, brief, almost reluctant, but real. She looked away again, toward the bars of light on the floor.
"It’s just that your attention to Misha is very much different from what you have given me. I know. I understand how a warlord’s life is. You are supposed to have multiple strong women by your side. And I like Misha too. She’s a princess and has a better status than a barbarian like me."
"Stop."
The single word cut cleanly through the rest of what she might have said. Thora’s mouth closed at once. She had followed his commands in battle for too long to ignore one spoken in that tone.
Kane reached out and pulled her close.
One arm slid around her waist, the other settling at the back of her neck, fingers sliding into the thick braid. He drew her against his chest until there was no space left between them.
The solid heat of her body pressed to his, the same body that had stood at his side when the warband was still half-formed and hungry, the same body that had taken every thrust he gave her in the mud and the cold without ever asking him to be gentle.
He felt the quick catch of her breath against his collarbone.
"You aren’t less just because you are not a noble or you aren’t my wife," he said, voice rough against her hair.
"I made you my wife the moment I fucked you in Lain’s camp."
Thora’s head tilted back so she could look at him. Her dark eyes searched his face, looking for the lie that was not there.
"Don’t think about being sidelined," Kane continued. His thumb brushed the side of her neck, feeling the steady pulse under the skin.
"Don’t be jealous. You are not Misha. You are more important to me."
He kissed her hard.
There was nothing careful about it. His mouth claimed hers with the same direct hunger that had marked every night they had shared since the beginning, teeth, tongue, the press of his body forcing her back a half-step until her shoulders met the cold stone of the pillar.
Thora made a low sound in her throat and answered him with equal force, one hand fisting in the front of his shirt, the other sliding up into his red hair.
The kiss tasted of the morning air and the edge of the training yard still clinging to her skin.
When he finally pulled back, they were both breathing harder.
Kane kept his forehead against hers for a moment longer.
"I may have many women," he said. "But you are at the top. Always."
Thora’s eyes stayed closed for a heartbeat. When she opened them, the tightness that had sat around her mouth was gone. In its place was something quieter, steadier, the look she wore when the fighting was over, and the warband was still alive around the fire.
"You mean that," she said. It was not a question.
"I mean it."
