NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

Chapter 231: Road to Beast Empire

Kane, Kessa, and Griselda stood ready at the inner gate before first light.

Packs were light. Weapons were not.

Mjoldr rested against Kane’s shoulder.

Kessa’s short blades sat in crossed sheaths at her hips, tiger stripes already catching the pale dawn. Griselda’s dark wings remained folded tight against her back, violet hair bound for travel, yellow eyes calm.

Sira stepped forward first. Kane pulled her into a brief, firm hug. She returned it without a word, then stepped back into the line of those who remained.

He turned to Thora and Misha and pulled them harder than necessary, one arm around each, crushing them against his chest for a long moment. The scent of the study, of shared nights, of the claims that already existed, settled over all three of them.

"Move to Menual if you are uncomfortable," he said against their hair. "I will be back."

Misha nuzzled into his chest, white hair soft against his jaw, arms tight around his waist.

Thora’s fingers dug into the back of his shirt. When she finally spoke, her voice was rough.

"Kane... I can fight."

He leaned back just enough to look at her.

"I know. We are not going to fight."

He kissed them both.

Not rough. Not claiming. The contact was slower, deliberate, the kind of kiss that carried weight beyond the moment.

A promise of return. A future that still included the wide bed in the western wing and the two women who already owned places in it.

Thora’s mouth lingered. Misha’s fingers stayed fisted in his shirt until he gently set them both back on their feet.

Slovia waited at the outer entrance, violet robes still as the morning air, a line of silent guards at her back. She walked beside Kane the final stretch of stone without hurry.

"You are making a foolish decision," she said.

"Berakamon isn’t an empire a human can enter."

"Someone had to."

"They are not diplomatic either."

Kane glanced at her.

"You weren’t either."

A small smile tugged at the corner of the Empress’s mouth.

She stopped him with a light touch, then raised her hand. Red light gathered at her fingertips. She pressed them to the center of his chest.

Tap.

Pain lanced through him, sharp, precise, as if the fingers had reached past skin and bone and closed around his heart.

Kane’s entire body shook once. The system window exploded open in his vision without being called.

Kane’s breath came hard. He looked at Slovia, confusion clear on his face. Misha, still standing a few paces behind with Thora, smiled quietly, as if she had known.

Slovia nodded once.

"May the gods be with you."

Kane turned. Kessa fell in on his right. Griselda took the left, wings still folded. They walked out of the gate together. The doors of Milfheim closed behind them with a low, final sound.

The forest road to Berakamon would take two days if they kept a steady pace and avoided the deeper game trails.

An hour into the trees, the canopy closed overhead, and the light turned green.

Griselda moved with quiet alertness, yellow eyes scanning every shadow between the trunks.

Kessa bounded ahead in short, restless bursts, striped tail flicking, then circled back again and again as if the forest itself excited her.

Kane adjusted the strap of Mjoldr and glanced at the beastwoman.

"Do you have family there, Kessa?"

The question was sudden.

Despite having claimed her, he realized he knew almost nothing about the life she had lived before the elven tournament and the nights in his bed.

Kessa nodded, happy and unguarded.

"Older brother and my parents. They still live in the outer settlements near the river forks."

"Excited?"

"Pretty much. They must think I’m earning gold somewhere, not fucking a barbarian."

Kane chuckled under his breath.

"This barbarian who pretty much takes care of you."

She shot him a quick, sharp-toothed smile over her shoulder.

Then she stopped.

Her ears, usually hidden under the fall of her hair, perked hard. Griselda halted in the same instant, one dark wing half-unfurling in instinctive readiness.

Kane didn’t wait for an explanation.

He tore Mjoldr from his shoulder and threw it in a single, violent motion.

The axe left his hand with a heavy whoosh, spinning end over end through a narrow gap between two trunks.

A wet, solid impact sounded. Something large roared in pain and rage.

A bear, black-furred, shoulders higher than a man, eyes already wild, crashed out of the undergrowth, the axe buried deep in its side.

Blood poured down its flank.

Kane raised his open hand.

Squelch.

Mjolnir tore free of the creature’s flesh with a spray of red and flew back to his grip as if pulled by invisible wire.

He spun the weapon once, stepped in, and beheaded the bear in a single clean arc.

Slash.

The heavy body collapsed. Blood overflowed across the leaf litter in a dark, spreading pool as its head rolled to a stop against a root.

Silence returned to the trees, broken only by the slow drip of blood and Kessa’s low, impressed whistle.

Griselda’s wings folded again. Yellow eyes moved from the corpse to Kane.

"That wasn’t a normal patrol beast," she said.

"It was already agitated. Something further in has the packs restless."

Kessa crouched beside the body, nostrils flaring.

"Scent’s wrong. Not just pain. Fear. Something bigger pushed it this far out."

Kane rested Mjoldr against his shoulder again, the head still wet.

"Then we keep moving. Two days. No fires at night. No unnecessary noise. If Marisa already saw us coming, Grathak will have more than one restless bear on the outer paths."

Kessa rose, wiping a fleck of blood from her cheek with the back of her hand.

"My brother’s settlement is still a day and a half from here. If the packs are this tense already, the deeper roads will be worse."
