Marisa stood.

She closed the distance between them in three unhurried steps until she was close enough that Kane could feel the warmth of her skin, yet she stopped just short of contact.

Her breasts didn’t press against his chest.

The thin band across them rose and fell with her breathing, close enough to touch, deliberately held back. Eyes stayed locked on his.

"You are the first variable I haven’t been able to read completely," she said.

"Your origin is blank. Your strength does not match any tribe I know. You collect women the way my brother collects territory, yet you do not keep them in cages. You walked into Milfheim and left with an alliance instead of a massacre. That makes you useful. It also makes you dangerous enough that Grathak will not simply talk."

Kane looked down at her.

"You want me to kill your own brother. And in exchange?"

Marisa’s amber eyes held his without blinking.

"In exchange, Berakamon doesn’t become another enemy you have to burn down later. In exchange, the packs can be turned toward the real threat instead of wasting themselves on raids and breeding pits. In exchange, I stop seeing the same ending every time I close my eyes."

Kane studied the woman standing almost against him, the long black hair, the refined features that stood out so sharply against everything else in this empire, the calm way she offered fratricide and alliance in the same breath.

"You trust me so much. Why?"

"I have seen enough," Marisa answered.

"I have also seen that if I give you my body, you will fight for me."

She reached up and lowered the thin band across her chest just enough. The fabric slipped.

Her breasts settled free, full, firm, the dark rounds of her nipples already tight in the cooler air of the room.

She didn’t push them forward. She let him see, amber eyes watching his reaction with the same measuring calm she had used since she walked through the door.

Kane laughed once, low and genuine, and stepped back.

"Not anymore. I fucked too many to fall for that."

Marisa did not look offended. She didn’t cover herself. She tilted her head, black hair sliding over one bare shoulder.

"So you don’t want cooperation?"

"Hmm?"

"If my brother falls, then I will be the one to take the crown. And if you take me, then you will have this empire too."

Kane was briefly at a loss for words. Another throne. Another political marriage. Another set of expectations layered on top of Thora, Misha, the ranked women of Milfheim, and every other claim he already carried.

Maintaining all of it would drive most men insane.

He had stopped counting the number of women who thought a night or a title would bind him permanently.

"Another marriage of convenience?"

"Yes."

Marisa finally stepped back and sat on the edge of the bed again, still bare from the waist up, the thin wrap around her hips the only remaining cover.

She crossed one long leg over the other and waited.

Kane leaned against the wall once more.

"You know it will fail, right? Your brother’s reputation among your people is no joke."

Marisa nodded. The movement made her bare breasts shift.

"And that is why you will humiliate him first. Beastmen respect strength above all else. If Grathak loses to a barbarian in front of the packs, then there is nothing left for them to respect. His pleasure, his freedom, his breeding grounds, all of it rests on the belief that no one can take what he holds. Break that belief in public, and the rest follows. The packs will not rise for a defeated emperor. They will look for the one who defeated him."

She watched him process it, eyes steady.

"I’m not asking you to sneak into his hall and cut his throat in the dark," she continued.

"That would only make him a martyr. I am asking you to accept the trial he will offer. Let him make it public. Let him use the guardian, the packs, whatever spectacle he chooses. And then break him so completely that even the most loyal among them understand the age of Grathak is finished."

Kane’s gaze dropped briefly to her bare chest, then returned to her face.

"And after that you expect me to marry you and call this empire mine."

"I expect you to take what is useful and leave the rest," Marisa said.

"If marriage is the cleanest way to hold Berakamon without spending the next year putting down rebellions, then yes. If you prefer another arrangement, we can discuss it after he is dead. I am practical, barbarian. Not romantic."

The muffled sounds of the street continued beyond the shutters.

Somewhere below, Kessa and Griselda would be returning soon with food. Marisa seemed aware of the limited time. She made no move to cover herself. The offer, and the body that came with it, remained on full display.

Kane pushed off the wall and walked to the window, cracking the shutter just enough to glance at the avenue. No immediate threat. Only the usual night traffic of beastkin and the distant glow of fires. He closed it again and turned back to the woman on the bed.

"Grathak already knows I am here because of you," he said.

"What does he think this meeting is?"

"He thinks I am measuring the human who walked through his gate with his sister’s scent on him and a flying axe on his back. He expects me to return with an assessment. He does not expect me to offer you his throne."

"And when he finds out you did?"

Marisa’s mouth curved, small and cold.

"By then it will no longer matter what he expects."

She leaned back on her hands again, the position lifting her bare breasts, the dark nipples standing clear in the lamplight. The faint markings along her hips and collarbones seemed darker against her skin

"Kessa will not like this conversation," she observed.

"Neither will the winged one. They both already claim pieces of you. Adding the sister of the Beast Emperor will complicate their ranks."

"They’ll adapt. Or they won’t."

"Practical," Marisa said, echoing her earlier word.

"Good. You will need that when the trial begins. Grathak does not lose quietly. He will try to make an example of you in front of every pack that can reach the arena. He will use pain, humiliation, and the things this empire understands best. If you hesitate, if you hold back because you still think negotiation is possible, he will break you and put whatever remains in the breeding grounds as a warning."
