Marisa met her stare without flinching.
"You keep the place you have earned. I do not need to erase every claim he already carries. I need Berakamon pointed outward instead of inward. That is the whole of my interest."
Kane pushed off the wall.
"You said you had practical advice."
"I do."
Marisa glanced toward the shuttered window, then back.
"Shenron’s circle is not enough. The outer packs respect him, but they do not move the deeper bloodlines. Before my brother forces the trial, you need at least one major pack leader, someone whose word carries weight beyond the river forks, to be seen treating you as more than a loud outsider. Without that, even a victory in the arena will be read as a temporary insult instead of a change of power."
"And you have someone in mind."
"The River-Fang war-chief. She controls the southern approaches and has no love for my brother’s more excessive habits. She also owes my bloodline a debt she has never fully repaid. A meeting can be arranged. Whether she accepts you is your problem."
Kessa’s tail flicked again.
"You’re very free with other people’s debts."
"I am free with anything that keeps the visions from ending the way they have always ended."
Marisa pulled the hood back up, shadowing her face once more.
"I will not come again before the summons. When Grathak calls, you will already know what I believe the correct answer is. The rest is yours to decide."
She moved to the door. Kessa stepped aside without warmth. Marisa paused with her hand on the latch and looked back at Kane one last time.
"You do not have to like me. You only have to decide whether the empire that survives is more useful than the one that burns because its emperor refused to see past his own pride."
She opened the door, slipped into the dark, and was gone. The night air that entered smelled of the compound and distant fires. No footsteps lingered.
Kessa bolted the door again and turned.
"I hate how calm she is."
Kane sat on the edge of the bed and rested his forearms on his knees.
"She’s not calm. She’s decided. There’s a difference."
Griselda spoke from her corner for the first time.
"The vision she described matches the pressure I felt when we crossed the true border. Something in this empire is already turning toward a public confrontation. She is not inventing the shape of it."
Kessa dropped onto the bed beside Kane, close enough that her shoulder pressed against his.
"I still don’t trust her."
"Neither do I," Kane said.
"But the advice about the River-Fang pack is practical. If we’re going to walk into whatever welcome Grathak is building, I’d rather not do it with only Shenron’s name behind us."
Kessa was quiet for a moment, then nodded once.
"I’ll send word in the morning. The war-chief knows me. She won’t refuse a meeting outright. Whether she decides you’re worth the risk is another matter."
Morning came cooler than the days before.
Kessa was already moving before the compound fully woke.
She sent a short message through one of the younger runners who still owed her family small favors.
By the time Kane finished checking Mjoldr and Griselda folded her wings for travel, word had returned: the River-Fang war-chief would receive them at the southern approach stones before the sun reached its peak.
Kessa kept her explanation brief as they walked.
"Her name is Vorra. Old blood. Controls the river paths and the southern trade that still moves. She doesn’t love Grathak’s excesses, but she doesn’t cross him lightly either. She’ll test you. Don’t give her a reason to decide you’re more trouble than you’re worth."
Kane nodded once.
Griselda said nothing.
The three of them left the residential district and followed the wider track that led toward the southern ridges.
The River-Fang meeting ground sat in a broad clearing marked by standing stones carved with old claw signs.
A low fire burned at the center.
Several beast warriors stood in loose positions around the edge, watchful, armed, but not openly hostile.
At the far side of the fire waited an older female with heavy silver-streaked fur along her arms and the calm, scarred presence of someone who had held authority for a long time.
Vorra.
Her eyes were pale amber, almost colorless in the light, and they settled on Kane the moment he entered the clearing.
Kessa stopped a respectful distance from the fire and inclined her head.
"War-chief. Thank you for the meeting."
Vorra’s gaze moved from Kessa to Kane to Griselda, measuring each in turn.
"You bring an outsider and a winged one to my stones and ask for my time. Speak carefully."
Kessa kept her voice steady.
"He needs to be seen by someone whose word carries past the river forks. Shenron’s name is not enough for what is coming. I’m asking you to look at him and decide if he is worth limited recognition."
Vorra gestured to the open space near the fire.
"Then he will follow the forms. Shared meat first. Then questions. Then proof. If any part fails, the meeting ends, and you leave by the path you came."
A younger warrior brought forward a carved platter of roasted meat still dripping with fat.
Vorra took the first piece, ate without hurry, then nodded for Kane to take the next. He did.
The meat was rich, heavily seasoned, and clearly part of the ritual. Kessa and Griselda were offered portions after.
Only when the platter had been properly shared did Vorra speak again.
"You killed the emperor of Menual in his own hall. You walked into an empire of women and left with their cooperation. You broke a beast warrior’s arm in my market two nights ago and walked away. Why should the River-Fang treat you as anything more than a loud human who has been lucky so far?"
Kane met her pale eyes directly.
"Because luck doesn’t put ranked emperors on their own thrones or make entire streets listen when a claim is made. I’ve done both. The things moving in the deep forest won’t care about luck either. They’ll care about who can still stand when the sky breaks."
Vorra’s expression did not change.
"Pretty answers. I’ve heard pretty answers from stronger mouths than yours. Tell me about the women. The tiger-striped one is obvious. The winged one is not claimed in any way I can smell. How many others wait outside these borders for you?"
