Kane rested Mjoldr across his shoulder and watched Marisa pull the last of her composure back into place.
The taste of her still sat on his tongue. The frustrated heat in her eyes had not fully cooled.
They started walking again under the high moons, following the narrow track that kept them off the main roads.
For a while the only sounds were boots on packed earth and the night insects in the grass.
Marisa kept her cloak closed now, though the deliberate sway of her hips and the occasional glimpse of bare thigh when the fabric shifted showed she had not forgotten the unfinished business between them.
After nearly an hour, she broke the silence.
"The palace is built in three descending rings. The outer ring is for the packs that still pretend they have independence. The middle ring holds the high bloodlines and the permanent war-chiefs. The inner ring is my brother’s alone, his hall, his private levels, and the underground. Most guests never see below the middle ring. You will."
Kane glanced at her.
"Because of you, or because of the axe?"
"Both. He already knows I walked the outer settlements with you. He already knows I have been feeding you pieces of the board. Arriving with me, alone, tells him I have chosen a side even if I have not said the words aloud. That will interest him more than another tournament winner."
She stepped over a fallen branch, cloak parting just long enough to show the long line of her leg.
"There are three factions worth watching when you stand in front of him. The river and southern packs, Vorra’s people and those like them, want the deep forest pressure handled before it reaches their dens. They will listen to strength. The old pure-blood lines want the breeding grounds expanded and the old traditions enforced harder. They will want you broken and displayed. The third group is quieter. They have seen the mutants. They have counted the missing scouts. They are waiting to see if anyone can force my brother’s hand without dying in the attempt."
Kane adjusted the strap of Mjoldr.
"And the welcome itself?"
"He stages them the same way every time there is a real outsider. Public enough that the packs hear every word. Controlled enough that he can end it when he chooses. Questions first, about Menual, about the women you keep, about me. Then a demonstration. Not the full trial. A measurement. Enough blood that everyone present understands the difference in scale."
They walked in silence for another stretch.
The trees thinned slightly, showing distant pinpricks of light that marked the outer capital approaches.
Marisa’s voice stayed even, but Kane could still smell the faint musk of her earlier arousal on the night air.
He decided to push again.
"Your brother wants to fuck you. You never finished answering how far that tradition actually goes."
Marisa’s jaw tightened.
She kept her eyes on the path ahead and gave him nothing.
Kane laughed once, low and genuine.
"I’ll breed you in front of him. When the demonstration is over, and the packs are still watching. I’ll put you on your back on his own floor and make sure every set of eyes sees who finishes inside the emperor’s sister."
Marisa stopped walking.
The look she turned on him was pure amber fire.
"I told you I would do what the visions require. I did not tell you I am your plaything to threaten and display whenever you feel like testing a reaction."
Kane stopped as well, still faintly smiling.
"I know. I was testing you. Wanted to see if the woman who walks into rented rooms and offers her body for an empire would flinch when the price got stated out loud."
Marisa held his stare for a long moment.
The anger did not disappear, but it cooled into something sharper and more controlled.
"You have a habit of putting your mouth on people and then claiming it was only a test. Do it again when we are inside the walls, and I may decide the visions were wrong about which variable is useful."
"I’ll keep that in mind."
They started walking again.
The tension between them had shifted, no longer just political calculation and withheld sex, but a clearer, more dangerous awareness of how far each was willing to push the other.
Marisa kept her cloak closed. Kane kept Mjoldr loose in his grip. Neither pretended the conversation had ended cleanly.
Near midnight they found another shallow stand of trees far enough from the main tracks to risk a cold camp.
No fire.
Marisa sat with her back against a broad trunk, long legs stretched out, cloak wrapped tighter than the night before.
Kane took the opposite side of the small clearing, Mjoldr across his knees, listening to the forest.
After a while, Marisa spoke again, quieter.
"He will ask about the women. Kessa. The winged one. The ones you left in Milfheim. He will want to know if you collect them the same way he collects breeding stock. How you answer will decide whether the first demonstration is a simple measurement or something designed to strip you in front of the packs."
Kane leaned his head back against the tree.
"I’ll answer the way I always do. Straight. He can decide what it means."
"Straight answers are how most outsiders end up in the underground permanently."
"Then he’ll learn I’m not most outsiders."
Marisa was silent for a time.
When she spoke, the political edge again had thinned just enough to let something more personal through.
"The tradition I told you about... it is not only about power. In the oldest bloodlines, the strongest male and the strongest female binding together is supposed to keep the packs from fracturing. My brother has waited longer than any emperor before him. He believes that when I finally accept, the deeper forest will stabilize and the guardian will fully wake on his side. The visions show me the opposite. Every time I stay with him, the packs turn on each other the moment the sky breaks. That is why I am here. Not because I enjoy barbarians putting their tongues where they have not been invited."
Kane looked at her across the dark clearing.
"Understood. Doesn’t change what I said about the palace floor."
