The outer avenue gave way to the palace grounds without ceremony.

One moment they were still among the dense timber-and-stone buildings of the outer district.

The next, the structures fell back, and the true weight of Berakamon’s seat of power rose in front of them.

The outer palace walls were black stone shot through with pale bone, the surfaces carved in deep reliefs of conquest and claiming.

Trophies hung at regular intervals: skulls of challengers, shattered weapons, the occasional preserved wing or horn of something that had once thought itself strong enough to test the emperor.

Open plazas held iron cages and low stone platforms where the results of recent disputes were still on display.

The air itself felt thicker, charged with decades of unbroken dominance.

Kane and Marisa crossed the first wide courtyard under the eyes of every warrior present.

High-ranking beast warriors lined the approaches, lion blood, bear blood, older pure-line shapes that had kept their forms for generations.

They didn’t speak.

They stared.

Several inhaled openly as the pair passed, nostrils flaring at the layered scents Kane carried.

More than one pair of eyes lingered on Marisa, then on the space between her and the human, catching the faint but unmistakable trace of her arousal from the night on the road.

A low, amused rumble moved through one cluster of watchers. Another warrior licked his teeth and muttered something too soft to carry.

Kane felt the weight of the collective gaze like a physical pressure.

The system window flickered at the edge of his sight.

[Hostile Assessment in Progress – Multiple High-Tier Entities]

[Empress’s Mark: Holding]

[Advisory: Display of weakness will be exploited immediately]

He dismissed it and kept walking.

Marisa’s presence parted the most direct challenges, but it did nothing to soften the open contempt and hunger directed at the human who had dared to arrive with the emperor’s sister at his side.

They reached the base of the great black-stone steps that led toward the middle ring.

A senior attendant waited there, an older, silver-furred male with the calm posture of someone who had survived many emperors’ moods. His eyes moved over Kane once, lingered on Mjoldr, then settled on Marisa with careful respect.

Marisa did not waste time.

"Where is my brother?"

The attendant inclined his head.

"Underground, my lady. He has been occupied with personal matters since the morning summons were confirmed. He left word that the outsider is to be received when the emperor chooses, not before."

Kane stopped at the foot of the steps.

"I’m going down now."

The attendant’s expression didn’t change, but several of the nearby high-ranking warriors shifted, ears angling forward at the open demand.

Marisa turned her head just enough to look at Kane.

"The underground levels are where he keeps his private entertainment and the first layer of testing. Walking in uninvited is the kind of boldness that gets outsiders maimed for display. You already used your one free act of audacity by arriving alone with me. Do not spend the rest of it before you even see his face."

Kane’s voice stayed level.

"I’m done waiting on other people’s timing."

A broad, scarred warrior near the front of the watching cluster, bear-marked, heavier than Shenron, wearing the bone tokens of a middle-ring enforcer, took a single step forward. His voice was a low, contemptuous growl.

"The human speaks as if he has already earned the right to give orders in this place. You carry an axe and the smell of the emperor’s sister. Neither makes you more than meat that has not yet been properly broken."

The courtyard quieted.

Every set of eyes fixed on the exchange.

Kane turned his head slowly and looked at the bear-marked warrior.

He did not shift his stance into a guard. He simply met the much larger male’s stare and let the silence stretch until the contempt on the warrior’s face began to curdle into something less certain.

When Kane finally spoke, his voice was quiet enough that only those closest could hear it clearly, yet it carried.

"I don’t need an axe to cut you down. Keep talking, and I’ll demonstrate the difference between a trophy and a problem that walks into your emperor’s hall on its own feet."

The bear-marked warrior’s ears flattened. Several of the others tensed, waiting for the explosion of violence the challenge should have produced. Kane did not move.

He didn’t look away.

The system window flickered once more, soft and almost amused.

[Target Assessment: Recalculating Threat Level]

[Local Perception Shift: Minor – Outsider marked as potentially non-prey]

The bear-marked warrior held the stare for three full heartbeats longer, then stepped back a single pace.

It was not a full retreat.

A low ripple of recalculation moved through the watching ranks.

Marisa’s amber eyes narrowed slightly, but she said nothing to undercut the moment.

The senior attendant cleared his throat carefully.

"If the outsider insists on the underground, I will send word ahead. The emperor’s personal levels are not denied to the lady Marisa. The human will enter in her presence and under the understanding that any blood spilled before the emperor’s formal welcome is the human’s responsibility alone."

Kane nodded once.

"Send the word."

The attendant gestured sharply.

Two lower attendants peeled away at a run toward a wide, descending archway that led under the main palace structure.

The high-ranking warriors continued to stare, but the open contempt had shifted into something more watchful and more dangerous.

Kane had not drawn a weapon. He had not needed to. That fact alone would travel ahead of him into the levels below.

Marisa stepped closer, voice pitched for Kane alone.

"You just made the first impression more expensive. He will hear that you threatened one of his middle-ring enforcers without raising your axe. Some will respect it. Others will decide the measurement needs to hurt more than usual."

Kane adjusted Mjoldr’s weight on his back and started toward the descending archway.

"Let them decide. I’m done being looked at like a problem that has not yet learned where it stands."
