The Flirty book’s lessons sat ready behind Tom’s teeth. He kept his voice calm, almost conversational, but the words themselves were anything but as they rolled out of his mouth...

"Hey, wife. That blouse is fighting a losing battle," he began gently.

"It is stretched so tight across your chest it is practically begging to give up. What is the point? Did you put it on so anyone looking would see exactly how hard your nipples are getting underneath?"

"Right now they are pushing against the fabric like they want out. You should have gone one size smaller if you really wanted them on display and I would admire them better." Tom completed then as an afterthought, he added;

"And I would tell you you wouldn’t go out dressed like that." That was one truth. If Tom had the power, he wouldn’t allow his woman to step out dressed like that without him by her side for everyone to know who owned her.

Meanwhile, at Tom’s words, Sienna’s mouth dropped open.

The colour drained from her face, then rushed back in a hot, furious wave. Her eyes widened. For a full second she simply stared at him, her lips parted, as if her brain refused to accept that the man sitting at her table had just spoken those words out loud.

The System’s interface flickered into view, quiet and clearly satisfied;

[Daily task progress noted - moving at a very good pace.The compliment was delivered with appropriate filth. Host is learning.]

[The reward bronze chest seems very close to achieve]

Tom swallowed hard, pleased by the compliment. That motivated him to hold Sienna’s gaze and waited for her reaction, the steam from the tea rising between them...

Sienna’s mouth remained open for a full second longer than she would ever admit. Finally, her fingers tightened around the strap of her purse until the knuckles whitened.

Pure instinct took over.

"Tom Harlow, you fucking nitwit!"

She stepped forward sharply, her right hand rising in a clean, practised arc aimed straight at his face. The old Sienna - the one who had spent weeks reducing him to silence with a single look or a single strike, moved without hesitation.

Tom did not flinch.

He simply looked at her. The stare was quiet, almost mild, but it carried a clear question: Really?

Sienna’s hand stopped in mid-air, inches from his cheek. The momentum died so abruptly her arm trembled. For a frozen second she stood there, palm open, chest heaving, the tight blouse stretching hard across her braless breasts with every furious breath.

Then she dropped her hand.

A long, shaky exhale left her - heavy, frustrated, barely controlled. Her nostrils flared. The effort of stopping herself showed in the rigid line of her shoulders and the way her jaw clenched until the muscle jumped.

She let out another sharp breath through her nose.

"You are disgusting. I repeat, you are fucking fucking disgusting!" she said, in a voice that was low and tightly controlled. The words were clipped, each one forced through clenched teeth. She continued;

"And you are delusional if you think that kind of talk makes you anything more than what you have always been. A fucking nobody who can’t stand beside me! That is what you will always be."

She did not wait for a reply. She turned on her heel with sharp precision, the mini skirt flaring slightly with the movement, and walked out of the dining hall.

Her steps were measured, but the rigid set of her shoulders and the way her ponytail cut through the air betrayed how close she had come to losing the composure she was fighting to keep.

Only when she reached the entrance door of the house did her control slip for a fraction of a second. Her hand gripped the door hard enough to make the wood creak, and a single, furious sound - half curse, half disbelieving laugh, escaped her before she continued upward without looking back.

Tom remained seated. His heart was still beating too fast.

For a moment the old ache rose in his chest - the same one he had carried for weeks while she brought other men into the house and made sure he heard every sound. She was still the woman he had wanted from afar. The same face. The same body. The same sharp voice that used to make his stomach drop.

Even now, after everything, watching her walk away in that tight blouse and short skirt pulled at something low and familiar inside him.

And her last word rang louder, above every other insult. Would she ever see him as somebody who could stand beside her? Would she ever be soft towards him and his feelings for her?

One part of him wondered.

[Host, please. Don’t be pathetic.] The system chimed in.

Tom wanted to say something but decided the system would definitely not understand.

Or would it understand that love wasn’t something you could just switch off simply because the center of attraction and affection wasn’t returning the same energy?

Tom exhaled slowly and picked up the cup of tea again. His fingers weren’t that steady. The residual heat in his blood had nowhere to go, so it simply stayed, simmering under his skin while the sound of Sienna’s footsteps faded completely outside.

But the ache no longer sat alone.

He had watched her hand stop in mid-air because of him. He had watched her swallow the slap and the words she clearly wanted to throw. The deal was holding. The power had shifted, even if only by inches.

He put the tea to his mouth again, took a long sip, forcing his mind to not think of where Sienna could be going, or whether she was meeting a man who would grope those breasts mercilessly...

As if the system wanted to get Tom to stop sitting miserably and be thinking, it dinged, dropping the primary mission of the day.

And what it was made Tom’s stomach sank.
