Chapter 1738: Chapter 1738
The accounts have been frozen!
When a few directors arrived at the company and the finance department tried to transfer funds, they discovered the accounts were inoperable.
Chairman Fang and several directors looked very grim, while the finance staff appeared fearful, worried that the leadership might blame him.
Chairman Fang didn’t say anything to blame and turned back to the office.
A few directors followed him in, asking, "How did things end up like this?"
"Why didn’t you transfer the funds ahead of time?"
Their words were full of reproach and questioning towards Chairman Fang, criticizing him for being too negligent in his duties.
Chairman Fang didn’t bother arguing with them: "Go get a notarized document appointing me as the agent for all administrative tasks of the company."
The directors snorted coldly: "The accounts are frozen, what’s the point of you wanting power now?"
Chairman Fang patiently explained: "I’ll find a way to unfreeze them."
Upon hearing he had a plan, their expressions eased: "What plan?"
"What else can be done; pull some strings and find people."
Suddenly, someone knocked on the door outside.
Chairman Fang said, "Come in."
The secretary opened the door and said, "Chairman Fang, leaders from the business and tax departments and Mr. Xiao have arrived."
"Let them in."
The secretary opened the door and invited Xiao Chenlei and others inside.
He was about to serve tea and water when Xiao Chenlei waved his hand saying, "I’m just here to say a few words to Chairman Fang and then leave."
Chairman Fang smiled and said, "Mr. Xiao seldom visits. Sit down for a cup of tea, I have something to tell you."
Glancing at the stunned secretary on the side, he said, "Go serve tea."
The secretary quickly took out the tea leaves, but Xiao Chenlei didn’t sit down, with a wry smile on his face, "Chairman Fang, I have a lot to deal with, I’m going to other companies later. Let’s talk when I’m free."
He looked at the business and tax leaders and said, "Decided by the City Committee, your company is subject to closure due to pollution issues. My apologies, Chairman Fang."
He placed a document with a red seal on the table, "Chairman Fang, don’t start operations during this period. Someone will contact you in the next few days. If you have any needs or ideas, talk to Mayor Wu later."
"Mr. Xiao, don’t worry. I won’t make it difficult for you."
Chairman Fang nodded and smiled, not showing any anger.
He took out a cigarette, and the others waved off saying, "We’ll pass on the smoke; we need to go to the next company."
"Mr. Xiao." Chairman Fang called him: "Please, can you ask who is responsible for handling this matter right now?"
Xiao Chenlei said, "Currently, several committees are handling it collectively. Later, they might form a special team, but candidates aren’t decided yet."
"Okay, thank you, Mr. Xiao."
"You’re welcome."
After Xiao Chenlei and the others left, a director said, "Seems like we can’t find connections in the city; we have to try asking for help from provincial leaders."
Chairman Fang sneered internally. After Chang Hai’s disruption at the meeting today, the city committee was forced to unify opinions.
Given this situation, unless there are sufficient reasons, even provincial leaders can’t interfere.
Thus, this route is evidently not feasible.
He had a rough plan but wasn’t sure it would succeed.
...
"That bastard really has bad intentions."
In the car on the way back, hearing Wu Qiangwei recount the meeting room conversation, Song Guanchao cursed without mercy.
Wu Qiangwei said, "When we return, have Shi Qin come to see me."
"Why call her?"
"Have her contact those entrepreneurs and have them come for a meeting."
Shi Qin has been causing small troubles all the time; this kind of thankless task should be handed to her.
Song Guanchao nodded and said, "Did Zhou Zheng mention forming a special team?"
Wu Qiangwei said, "No hurry for now, talk to the entrepreneurs first."
After a pause, she added, "Don’t get involved in this anymore. With the changes, they’ll surely find fault with you. Anyway, the tone is set, later have someone from the City Committee handle it; leave this matter to Sun Jiajun in the City Government."
"That cannot happen." Song Guanchao immediately refused: "We’ve done half the work, now looking at the harvest, and you won’t let me get involved?"
He knew Wu Qiangwei was concerned, but he’d already offended those people like Chairman Fang and Chairman Qian, so he didn’t care about continuing to offend them.
Wu Qiangwei sighed helplessly: "Whatever suits you."
Upon returning to the City Government, after parking the car, Song Guanchao suddenly grabbed her small hand, Wu Qiangwei shivered slightly but feigned composure: "What are you doing."
Song Guanchao winked and said, "Your best friend isn’t home tonight, right?"
"Don’t know." Wu Qiangwei blushed.
"Then she’s not home." Song Guanchao extended two fingers and tickled her soft, delicate palm: "I’ll come to see you tonight."
Wu Qiangwei didn’t respond, pulled her hand out, and got out of the car, her back looking slightly hurried.
...
What happened in the expanded meeting has spread through the Jiangzhou political scene.
Firstly, Yang Gaolin attended the meeting as an advisor, his presence plainly telling everyone he stands with Wu Qiangwei.
This puzzled many, unable to understand.
The park was Yang Gaolin’s key achievement to rise from Mayor to Governor back then.
Now with trouble, it might ruin his reputation; why would he help Wu Qiangwei?
Secondly, there’s Chang Hai shifting the direction of the meeting by his own effort.
Privately, many praised Chang Hai for his coercion using interview videos.
Underdog stories have always been popular throughout history.
But, after this event, Chang Hai has reached his peak as Vice Mayor, if not jeopardizing his position entirely.
Noon.
The meeting minutes from the committee meeting were sent to the province.
What happened during the meeting also reached the province.
Jiangzhou is a provincial city where the City Committee and Municipal Government are close to the Provincial Committee and Provincial Government.
Any gossip quickly spreads between the two ends.
Qu Xiangru read the meeting minutes and watched the video, then immediately dialed Song Guanchao’s number.
Song Guanchao was about to head to the cafeteria for lunch, got the call, and sat back down.
He hadn’t contacted Qu Xiangru for a while.
Mainly because she almost never initiates contact, while he’s been busy running around several cities, constantly occupied.
"Any instructions, Governor Qu?" Song Guanchao spoke formally, worried someone else might be listening on the line.
"Did you have Chang Hai do this?" Qu Xiangru questioned, catching him off guard for two seconds.
Song Guanchao was surprised she cared about this out of the blue.
"Yes."
"Did Wu Qiangwei make you do it?"
"She wasn’t involved."
"Ha." Qu Xiangru sneered, evidently skeptical.
Song Guanchao sighed, not bothering to explain.
Qu Xiangru said, "You’re reckless helping her to this extent. Such a damaging action without thought, offending entrepreneurs and all of Jiangzhou’s committee. You’ve got some nerve, Song Guanchao!"
Despite her mocking words, Song Guanchao heard genuine concern and frustration underneath.
Song Guanchao helplessly sighed, explaining the whole situation to her in detail, hoping she wouldn’t worry or be upset.
After explaining, Qu Xiangru still huffed: "You act without thinking, involving yourself in matters ignored by several successive mayors over ten years. Are you so capable!"
Song Guanchao wished to avoid a dispute over this issue: "Your uncle contacted you, right?"
Qu Xiangru paused, unaware of his sudden shift to her family matters, obviously unwilling to discuss them.
"Take care of yourself."
With that, she was about to hang up, but Song Guanchao drew her attention back with one sentence: "Your uncle is now on my side."
