Chapter 1758: Chapter 1758

The place Tan Xiang picked was really out of the way; it took nearly an hour of driving to get there.

The farmhouse restaurant had a great environment: there was a fish pond, an orchard, chickens, ducks and geese being raised; there weren’t many customers, only a few cars in the parking lot.

As soon as Song Guanchao got out of the car, he saw two women sitting on chairs in the courtyard—Tan Xiang and Shen Qing.

Both women, in terms of figure and looks, were extremely striking; walking down the street they’d be the kind of beauties who catch the eye at a glance.

He walked over, pulled out a chair and sat down beside them. Shen Qing picked up the teapot on the small clay stove on the table, brewed a cup of tea for Song Guanchao, then quietly sat to the side, not saying a word.

She and Tan Xiang were both undercover agents arranged by the police back then; besides them, there were other undercovers scattered along Jiangzhou’s underworld.

After Lin Bin, the former captain of Jiangzhou City’s Criminal Police Detachment, died of a heart attack, the identities of these undercovers, apart from Song Guanchao, became completely unknown to anyone.

Even Wen Ru only knew about Tan Xiang and Shen Qing; she didn’t know about the others, and Song Guanchao had never mentioned them to her.

The attitude these two women had toward Song Guanchao couldn’t be called good or bad; they’d reached a kind of subtle balance with each other.

But there was no telling when that balance would be broken.

"Got a money‑making project." Song Guanchao took a sip of tea and said casually.

Tan Xiang instinctively first grew wary and suspicious, then asked, "What project?"

Song Guanchao told her about the situation with the park and his own plan.

After listening, Tan Xiang thought for a moment. It was indeed a good opportunity, but the resistance would be huge, and it had very high capital requirements.

There was no way she could take it down on her own; at most she could get a slice of the pie.

"Those companies aren’t going to be that cooperative, are they?" Tan Xiang said.

Unless Song Guanchao could keep a tight lid on those companies, anyone entering the field at this stage would become a targeted enemy.

And an opportunity this good would definitely attract speculators; the competitive pressure would also be tremendous.

Same old story: unless Song Guanchao could fully control the whole thing, then no matter how flowery his words were right now, it would just be empty pie in the sky.

"They’ll cooperate." Song Guanchao said. "I’m just asking you in advance whether you’re interested. If you are, get the money ready and wait for my news."

Tan Xiang’s lips curled into a faint smile. "No one ever complains about having too much money."

"Alright, then it’s settled."

Song Guanchao pinched out his cigarette butt, stood up and said, "I’m heading out. Wait for my call."

Tan Xiang asked, "Not grabbing a bite before you go?"

"Nah, got a lot on my plate." Song Guanchao did things crisply and neatly; he turned and left. A subtle change rose in the hearts of the two women.

They’d thought Song Guanchao would use this money‑making excuse to do something to them.

But he left right after talking business, as if he wasn’t the least bit interested in their bodies.

Thinking of those few absurd encounters, the two women’s feelings about him grew complicated.

...

Song Guanchao was busy until evening before getting off work; he had just gotten in the car when he received a call from Liang Jiajia.

"Have you been really busy lately?" Liang Jiajia was full of resentment.

"I just got released."

"Huh? What?"

"Sigh." Song Guanchao first sighed to set the mood, then started his performance.

Liang Jianfeng clearly hadn’t told her about what he’d been through recently, but Song Guanchao didn’t care about that.

He hadn’t contacted Liang Jiajia for several days in a row; the girl was already angry. He couldn’t be bothered about whether it would affect her mood.

When he finished, Liang Jiajia said angrily, "They filed a false report. The Central Disciplinary Inspection Committee doesn’t care?"

"There’s no way for them to intervene." Song Guanchao sighed again. "The person in charge of the immigration company is tight‑lipped, only admitting to having been instructed by someone but refusing to say who. The money and the immigration contracts are two completely separate sets of documents. And the key really was found in my office; the security footage doesn’t show any leads. Everyone knows it was a false report, but there’s no evidence to back it up."

"Damn it!" Liang Jiajia was in Beijing; upon hearing about this, there was nothing she could do. She could only stew angrily from hundreds of kilometers away.

"It’s a small matter, not worth getting mad over." Song Guanchao instead comforted her.

After soothing her for more than ten minutes, Song Guanchao hung up. Just as he was about to start the car, something flashed in the corner of his eye. He turned his head and saw Jiang Yiren standing by the car without him knowing when she’d appeared.

He lowered the window. Just as he opened his mouth, Jiang Yiren asked, "Who were you on the phone with, laughing so happily?"

"My girlfriend."

"...Oh." Jiang Yiren pouted and asked, "Got time? My dad wants to treat you to a meal."

"Maybe in a while."

"You’ve got a date tonight?"

"No."

"Then why aren’t you going?"

Song Guanchao raised his brows slightly. This girl’s tone when talking to him was getting more and more casual.

"It’s not something I can explain in a couple of sentences." Song Guanchao had no intention of explaining.

"Hmph." Jiang Yiren snorted in annoyance. "Forget it if you won’t say."

She tossed her hair and sashayed away, twisting her little waist.

Song Guanchao drove out of the parking lot, keeping his eyes on the rearview mirror as he went.

Right now there was a bounty on him in the underworld; it was very dangerous. At a time like this he had to put some distance between himself and the people around him.

He casually picked a greasy little joint nearby, and while waiting for the dishes, Tan Xiang’s call came in.

"Someone took the job."

"Got it."

Song Guanchao put down his phone just as the food was served.

After eating and drinking his fill, he sat at a street stall for another half hour, then finally went out and drove off.

Ten minutes after the car pulled out, he realized he was being tailed.

"They move pretty fast."

Song Guanchao let out a cold chuckle and casually called Director Ma.

"Director Ma, are you at the bureau?"

"I’m off work. What’s up?"

"I’m afraid I’ve got to trouble you to work overtime." After Song Guanchao briefly explained the situation, Director Ma got a scare.

Someone actually wanted to hire a hitman to hurt Song Guanchao.

He knew those companies wouldn’t easily compromise, and he also knew they would definitely retaliate against Song Guanchao, but he hadn’t expected them to strike this viciously.

They had balls, that’s for sure!

This was Nanjiang Province’s safest city!

"You go get some people organized first; later just come straight to my place."

"Okay!" Director Ma hung up, grabbed his down jacket and headed out.

His wife complained a little, "You’re going to the office again?"

"Yeah, something came up." Director Ma didn’t go into detail. Seeing his wife’s unhappy expression, he walked over and, ignoring the child watching nearby, cupped her face and planted a big kiss on it.

"What are you doing, our son is watching." His wife put on a show of pushing him away, but the shyness in her eyes and the words on her lips were completely at odds.

Director Ma chuckled and whispered in her ear, "Take a nice bath and wait for me in bed tonight, I’ll make sure you’re well fed."

...

Song Guanchao deliberately slowed his speed and drove all the way toward home.

He calculated the time—around fifteen minutes—before Director Ma called.

"We’re on our way."

"Alright."

Twenty minutes later, the car drove into his residential compound.

Song Guanchao parked the car and, as usual, walked into the elevator.

The moment the elevator doors opened, Song Guanchao’s ears twitched slightly; from the stairwell he heard faint footsteps.

Just as he stepped out of the elevator, the footsteps suddenly quickened; two figures rushed down from the stairwell and charged straight at Song Guanchao.
