Old Blind Man in a Cultivation World

Chapter 47: Succession War is Early!?

In the massive hall sat the Sect Head and the Five Dragon Lords.

It was a rare sight. The six had not gathered together in this hall for decades, and they certainly would not have done so without reason.

Each of the Five Dragon Lords carried enormous responsibilities. They were the pillars that protected the Dragon Meteor Sect and maintained its position as one of the four great titans of Sichuan.

If even one of them were to fall in battle, the other great sects would undoubtedly seize the opportunity to expand their own territory and influence.

At the highest seat of the hall sat the Sect Head. His throne was shaped like a golden dragon soaring toward the heavens, its body twisting majestically around the backrest. The man sitting upon it, however, looked nothing like the creature depicted above him.

His skin clung tightly to his bones. His body was so thin that several of his ribs were visible beneath his robes. His once-powerful presence had weakened to the point that it seemed almost impossible for him to remain alive.

His eyes were hollow and dim. Yet despite his appearance, everyone in the hall knew who he was. The most benevolent Sect Head in the history of the Dragon Meteor Sect. A man who had devoted his entire life to the sect.

"Five Dragons..." The Sect Head’s voice echoed through the hall. It was weak. Yet the moment it reached their ears, the Five Dragon Lords immediately rose from their seats and bowed respectfully.

"Sect Head!!" The voices of the five resounded in response.

The Sect Head smiled; It was a faint smile, but there was genuine warmth within it.

"I have watched the five of you grow..." He paused, struggling to catch his breath.

"...from little carp into dragons among men. My ambitions were never great. I never sought to conquer the world. I never dreamed of becoming the strongest beneath the heavens." The Five Dragon Lords remained silent. His gaze slowly swept across the five figures standing before him. His wrinkled face slowly formed another smile.

"But the heavens were kind enough to grant this old man one great fortune." He looked toward the enormous hall surrounding them.

"I was allowed to watch this sect flourish." His voice weakened further.

"I watched it grow from a struggling sect into one of the four great powers of Sichuan." He closed his eyes for a moment.

"And I watched the five of you become the pillars upon which it stands." Silence filled the hall. Then the Sect Head opened his eyes again.

This time, there was no warmth within them. Only exhaustion. "But my time is almost over. I have spent my entire life protecting this sect from the ambitions of outsiders."

"But I fear the greatest threat to the Dragon Meteor Sect will not come from another sect." His eyes narrowed.

"It will come from within... or perhaps it has already appeared." He looked at the Five Dragon Lords.

"Sect Head, you mean to say.....?" The Green Dragon Lord, the youngest of the five Dragon Lords spoke in surprise.

"Indeed, I am not wise enough to understand the machinations of this individual but I have lived long enough to recognize the spider web being woven... cough cough" The Dragon Lord tried to chuckle but his lack of breath caused him to cough instead.

"Before the web is completed, the sect needs to select the next Head of the Sect..... For that, I decree the start of the succession war immediately." The Sect Head decreed as he held his thin arm out in a domineering fashion.

The five Dragon Lords pupils narrowed in surprise but their years of experience allowed them to factor this revelation in their ongoing strategies.

The Sect Head position was rarely vacant since its creation centuries ago. But when it was, it was a greatly chaotic time for the sect. Many died but some carps became dragons using it as an opportunity.

"Yes, Sect Head!!" The Five Dragon Lords bowed heeding his decree as the truth.

"Just like the previous Sect Succession War, the rules will apply the same." The Sect Head mustered the words from his chest.

"The Golden Dragon Hidden Realm will remain open for one month. During that time, each young master will be tasked with finding and refining the Golden Star Orb, treasure of the sect hidden in the third level of the Golden Dragon Hidden Realm." The Sect Head paused before continuing.

"Each of them will be allowed three individuals they can bring with them, none of the hall masters or the Dragon Lords are allowed inside. And no other assistance will be allowed once they enter the hidden realm."

"Once the gates of the Hidden Realm close, killing is permitted. The sect will not interfere, regardless of who lives or dies. The Grand Elder will personally intervene should all four candidates be on the verge of death. At least one successor candidate must survive until the end of the trial."

"The Golden Star Orb must be refined by the Successor Candidate themselves. It cannot be transferred, shared, or refined by another. If none of the candidates successfully refine the Golden Star Orb before the Hidden Realm closes, the succession will be determined by the Grand Elder based on their performances."

"May the strongest dragon inherit the heavens!" The Sect Head lowered his arm unleashing his Peak rank cultivation.

The disciple in the hall who was noting down the Sect Head’s decree immediately could not breathe for a moment. His shortness of breath lasted for only a moment before the Sect Head coughed a few more times.

"Understood Heavenly Dragon Lord!" The five Dragon Lords bowed and spoke in unison.

-----------

Horns were blown as soon as the decree was publicly announced. The deep sound echoed throughout the entire Dragon Meteor Sect.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The sound reverberated across the mountains, reaching every hall, courtyard, and cultivation ground within the sect. The disciples stopped what they were doing. Elders emerged from their residences. Inner Sect disciples looked toward the skies with confusion.

Even those who had lived within the sect for decades understood the meaning behind the horns.

The Succession War had begun.
