“How should I go about telling the President he needs to get tested in a hospital?” Catherine asked, clearly conflicted. “Why would he believe me?”

“That’s not a great idea right now.” I warned, and the woman returned a hard stare.

“Why? I swore the Hippocratic Oath. To do no harm, and to do the greatest good. I can’t simply overlook the abnormality now I know of it.”

“Nor am I asking you to. But… think about it.” My tone was solemn. “You’ve seen the miracles I can produce, and what it means to have these Eyes now. Conversely, don’t you think there might be… other… causes for such a strange brain structure?”

At my words she paused, frowning. “You sound like you know something.”

“Speculation. But reasoned.” I agreed. “The world’s a more dangerous place than ever. If you carelessly reveal what you know, it might end badly for you.” At my words, her eyes widened, and she shivered. Beside me, Haru nodded.

“Akio isn’t trying to scare you. He’s just concerned. It would be terrible losing such an asset to medicine, and worse, a good, charitable woman. Why, he’s eager to recruit you, and help you make great strides in reducing lives lost to cruel cancers and other ailments, especially in children.”

“That’s right. I want you, and those like you, to study, learn, and make the world a healthier, happier place. I have a number of goals…” I explained.  “…to reduce pollution and safeguard the environment, to make sure everyone has a place to live, food to eat, basic necessities, and to eradicate as much disease and suffering as possible.”

“Bold words. Arrogant too.” Catherine agreed. “But when you say it, it sounds plausible. What a utopia that would be…”

“Yes, though sadly some of the other goals, such as advancing our strength so that Earth remains uninvaded, aren’t so nice. But yes, my point is, if everyone works with me, those goals aren’t merely dreams. To that end… I’d rather you do a little more subtle inspection first, with more appropriate eyes.”

I glanced at Haru, and she smiled. “I’ll take care of it. Kana’s probably the most suitable for the task. Just don’t forget you’re due to dance with me later. And Kana will want her turn as well.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it, and speaking of dances…” Ellie, in her gorgeous gown, was waiting, the military orchestra playing a gentle, almost holding-pattern style of tune, as if they too were anticipating something. “…I guess we can’t delay any longer. We’ll speak later, if that’s all right?”

Catherine nodded dumbly, and I strode on in. Seeing that, the Queen smiled. “About time, Akio. We can’t start the Ball without the guest of honour taking the first dance with his new fiancée, can we? So, show us if you have the moves befitting a man seeking the hand of not one, not two, but…” She winked at Shaeula playfully. “…three Princesses.”

There was a smattering of laughter around the room, and I had to chuckle myself, sightly embarrassed. “I’ll do my best.” I strode over and took the hand Ellie offered me elegantly. Seeing my amused expression, she pouted.

“I may not have liked the attention of royal events, much like Yukiko, but of course I’m capable.” Her hand was warm in my grasp, and I detected the slight tremors of her nervousness. “Perhaps I’ll even enjoy it for once?”

Perhaps?” I raised an eyebrow as the Queen signalled the Bandmaster, and the first proper song began, the stirring sounds echoing out, and as I pulled Ellie close, her blush deepened and spread, but her blue eyes were clear and honest.

“Let a lady have some dignity. If I was too easy, then you might get bored of me.” Despite her joking tone, I detected genuine worry there, and as we danced around the ballroom, our footsteps sure, and motions deft, I softly whispered to her my true feelings.

“Bored? Of you? Dream on. You’re many things, but boring most certainly isn’t one of them.”

The music swelled, and all eyes were on us as we danced. It was quite a bold choreography, as some of the twirls and patterns of steps required rather close contact, Ellie’s body pressed against mine, but neither of us flinched. Far too late for that now.

“It’s far too late for modestly now…” Ellie echoed my thoughts, likely thinking along the same lines. “After… after last night. No regrets though.” she insisted. “You know…” We had the leisure to talk, as the first dance was traditionally one of the longer ones, and this piece of music, Pomp And Circumstance March by Edward Elgar, usually ran around six minutes. Of course, dancing with Ellie in front of everyone, six minutes is both agonisingly long and painfully short…

“…I’ve certainly struggled a bit…” We were whispering, barely audible, but because of our stats we could hear each other just fine. “…there’s… a lot to adapt to. This wasn’t how I saw my life going, my romance… every day there are new shocks.”

“Yeah, sorry about that. I know I’m greedy, selfish, but I’ll genuinely love you and make you happy, Ellie. Haru, Yu-mi… the others too…”

That’s hardly the big shock.” Ellie snorted, suddenly amused. “Eri is right. There’s not so much difference between fifteen and twenty, it’s not like going from one to two, or even two to three. No, you know the shock I mean…”

“I do.” I conceded. “Sorry about that…”

“Why apologise? It’s who you are. I… did find it too easy to just set aside my own feelings though. That was wrong of me. I guess… I’m still rather sore about when we met. I was a terrible person…” We spun and danced, and we were both really enjoying it, not even feeling the eyes on us now. “…and before you say I wasn’t myself, that the Bullaun Water was corrupting me, I know. But all that did was bring out the darkness already in me, the mistrust, the bitterness. I couldn’t comprehend that you had multiple lovers, many so young, and could still be a good man, not a pervert.”

“Hey, Motoko and Natsumi look younger than they are. To Westerners, we Asians always seem that way.”

“I know. Honestly, Motoko is rather more mature than I am. No, Natsumi too, I suppose. They take to the battlefield for their own satisfaction too, their own dreams. It makes me feel small. No…” She laughed self-deprecatingly, face close to mine, and to the watchers It might have seemed we were kissing. “…everyone makes me feel small and petty. But I know that’s a ‘me’ problem. And… this definitely isn’t so bad.” She pulled me close as we spun, breath hot on my face.

“I struggled too, at the beginning, not that you’ll believe me. And Hinata and Kana still pang my conscience a little, but… I believe love conquers all.”

“Oh, I don’t disbelieve you.” Ellie surprised me. “We talk, you know? Even far away in Britain, I’m but a message away. Eri often complains about your density and stubbornness to start, though Shaeula then points out it’s Eri’s own fault for being… how did your sister put it… a YandEri…” she chuckled. “Quite the pun. But you’ve rather overcome that now. Perhaps a little too well. But…” She cast a glance over the watching women. “…they are all good women. Even if Tamamo-no-Mae rather scares me. I think you’ll have trouble with her…”

“I don’t know about that. She’s starting over. Though to truly do so, she needs to resolve the sorrows of her past which remain.”

“Yes. I suppose so. Anyway…” The song was starting to wind down. “…Hinata and Kana know their own minds, I know that. It’s my own prejudices… well-founded ones, I might add…” Ellie grumbled. “…which made me forget that. And even if some might find it distasteful, it’s not a crime to love someone younger or older. So long as the relationships are balanced. Though truthfully…” Ellie’s blue eyes were wistful. “…even I, a woman matching you in age, a Princess, feel rather overawed and out of my depth. Hinata’s and Kana’s mental fortitude and self-confidence are definitely things I can learn from.”

“Yes. But still remain yourself, as that’s the Ellie I love…” I finished, spinning her around and holding her close in my arms, as the song finished. There was more polite applause, and I fondly kissed Ellie, and she didn’t resist. As our lips parted, tongues damp with each other’s saliva, the Queen chuckled, watching over us with great amusement.

“When did you get so bold, dear granddaughter? As for you, young Akio, stealing her lips in front of us… very daring. Now then… dance, everyone, and drink, and if you simply must do business, at least remember to partake of the festivities. We insist on that!”

As we stepped off the floor, up came Sir Arthur, a proud smile on his face. “Akio, or perhaps I should say Duke Windsor…”

“Please don’t…” I grinned shamefacedly. “If we were married, not just engaged, you’d have cause, and even then, don’t, I beg you…”

“Modest as ever…” Sir Arthur chuckled. “Anyway, I beg your indulgence, I would like to dance with young Elenaor, as we used to. To celebrate her engagement.”

“By all means.” I nodded, and Natsumi stepped out from behind him, smiling wickedly.

“And I’m next up with you, Akio!”

“Not a problem. I’d enjoy that.” I offered my hand to Natsumi, and as we took to the floor, I could see others joining the dance. David was with Mary-Jane, an odd combination, and I saw my mom and father, as well as Eri’s parents, and others… none of the girls, though… Instead, they were all watching in a large group, while Kenji-kun and Shige-san were talking to the President on the edge of the group about something. The Pope was merely observing, not that I expected him to dance…

“Fewer distractions, please.” Natsumi giggled, biting my ear playfully, hiding it from the audience with her head. “It’s my time now.”

“My apologies, Natsumi-sama…” I declared grandly, making her flush and giggle, before the next dance, a more cheerful, jaunty tune, started up.

“I forgive you.” she allowed, and as we began to dance, I enjoyed the graceful show she was putting on. In fact, Motoko and Natsumi had taught me how to dance, it was an important talent, even to Japanese nobility, as Western dance traditions had crept in over time. “It’s good to see you didn’t let Eleanor down.”

“I wouldn’t.” I promised. “I could have probably managed just with my stats, but knowing the majority of the steps made things much simpler. So thank you. And I’ll thank Motoko too later.”

“That’s right. Dancing is just like martial arts. A true master can improvise, but it’s still better to know the moves by rote.” She winked, as I lowered her down even as she danced, in time to the music, before sweeping her up and spinning her around, her white and pink skirts billowing.

“That reminds me…” I continued. “…most of you went for more… mature… styles. But yours is very princess-like and girlish. Is there a reason? It can’t be that you’re not confident, you’ve a great figure.”

“Flatterer.” Her skin was dappled with pink, glowing under the lights of the ballroom. “Of course I’m confident in my body. My chest isn’t too bad either.” She pressed it against me as we came together, this part of the dance calling for close contact. “But really, it’s simple. I’ve always felt a little boyish, you know?”

I nodded, understanding. Actually, Natsumi was extremely feminine a girl in mannerisms and tastes, barring Tsumura Arts, of course, but compared to, for example Motoko or Miyu, who were both more reminiscent of the traditional Japanese ideal of Yamato Nadeshiko, in both temperament… outward temperament for Miyu, I suppose… and appearance, Natsumi did stand out, with her shorter, curly hair, and what she wore when bodyguarding.

“You’re supposed to disagree…” she pouted playfully, but we continued to dance, and my eyes were only on her, accepting her, and her pout faded. “…but I know you love me the way I am. Still… I thought I’d go for an extremely girlish style in contrast.” She glanced over at Michiru, who wore a similar fairy-style princess dress. “…it seems I’m not the only one who thought that.”

“In any case, you look gorgeous.” I insisted, and Natsumi smiled warmly.

“Thanks, Akio. That makes it all worthwhile. But…” She whispered something into my ear which was so scandalous it even made me blush, before chuckling wickedly.

“I wish. Probably not tonight though, I’ve… things to do. Though if there’s time…”

“Maybe we’ll make time. Oh, how disappointing, the song is coming to an end. Finish big, okay?” At her words, we spun, Natsumi whirling like an ice-skater or ballerina as our arms extended, only to come spinning back towards me and finishing in my arms. Her lips puckered for a kiss, determined not to be outdone by Ellie, and so I of course locked lips with her, and enjoyed a brief deep moment of passion. Once separated, I saw the Queen’s eyes on me, her expression rather amused and exasperated, before Natsumi led me back to the sides, where Motoko was waiting.

“You’re next then?” I asked, and she nodded.

“Yes. While we do not particularly care about the order, we asked if we could go first…”

“Yeah, because I’m going to show some class.” David smirked, having dropped off Mary-Jane. “Come on then, fangirl. Take a turn with me, now you’ve done your wifely duty?” David, in his evening jacket, seemed oddly elegant for once, though his spiky, partially bleached hair formed a contrast. It would be ludicrous to call it gap moe, David was anything but cute, but it did actually make him appear rather more dashing, in a dishevelled, arrogant, devil-may-care way.

Misinterpreting my gaze, he smirked. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to push my luck and get handsy. I wouldn’t anyway, too young for me, and too taken. I may be a charmer, but I’m no homewrecker. Surely you’re not so possessive you can’t even let your girls dance with another guy at an event like this?”

“That’s not it.” I returned his grin. “I trust you, Sir David, Knights have chivalry, and know how to treat a lady, don’t they?”

“Don’t start that shit…” he grumbled, clearly embarrassed.

“Besides…” I finished. “…I trust Natsumi. And we’re comrades in battle, and you’re right, this is an event for mingling…”

“We’re taught the proper dances for fathers, brothers and safe older gentlemen of influence.” Natsumi tittered. “But I wouldn’t hate it if you got a little jealous, Akio.”

“I’ll do my best then.” I offered my arm to Motoko, and we all stepped out onto the dancefloor again. Indeed, everyone had changed partners, and my father was dancing with mother-in-law Hana, and mom with father-in-law Junpei. True to his words, David was being perfectly gentlemanly with Natsumi, no close contact dancing like I was doing with Motoko, though honestly, he still moved well. The talent of a martial artist, I guess. Now, time to focus on the woman in my arms…

“This brings back memories…” Motoko’s brown eyes were shining with fond reminiscences.

“Of last time we were here?”

“Exactly.” In time to the music, I held Motoko close as she spoke. “I will never forget that day. It was my nobility debut with you as your fiancée. Natsumi was there too. Oh, and I do not discount Hyacinth, of course. But to declare our love before the world, on such a stage… I felt vindicated, happy.”

“Love?” I asked cheekily, and she blushed, so much like Natsumi, which made sense, considering how long they’d been together, learning from each other.

“Very amusing.” Motoko stifled a giggle, face serious, as we danced on. “Yes, love. What originally was merely our selfishness, became what we had dreamed of yet never considered possible so swiftly. Our selfishness still stings, a little, yet…” staring into my eyes, she leaned her head onto my chest even as we spun gracefully. “…I am glad we were selfish. To miss out on the future, our future, would be a sorrow deeper than death itself.”

Wow… aping my sister in my thoughts, I was shocked at her unusual boldness, but Motoko’s warmth was undeniable. “I don’t know. I get the feeling that you’d have made it work out somehow.” I soothed, and her gaze was now gently mocking.

“I do love that you believe in me so, and support and encourage my strength, but no… I was fragile, riddled with cracks. The pressure to give in, give up the Arts, marry, be the wife my family always wanted me to be… it was grinding me down. For Natsumi, it was doubtless worse. Yet here, the cracks started mending. Now… now I am Adamant…”

“Adamant, huh?” I asked, and she nodded, even as the dance was coming to an end.

“In the truest sense, though as one of your fiancées, I am indeed a Commander. Though my role lies in training, rather than leading. But I meant that I am now unbreakable, so long as we all endure. And you protect my heart.”

“Always.” Holding Motoko close, I shared my third kiss of the dances, passionate and fervent, before Motoko smacked her lips wetly, tongue licking up my saliva.

“I shall hold you to that. And let you hold me again. Has Natsumi suggested…?”

“Yeah, she did.” I cut Motoko off, laughing. “I’m not sure I’ll have time, but…”

“You will make it. After all, how can you resist us?” Motoko’s confidence was charming, and we stood proudly, backs straight as we returned to the side, other pairs of dancers likewise clearing the way for new dancers, or to change partners.

“There, returned safe and unharmed, as promised.” David declared grandly, as he walked Natsumi back to the side of the ballroom, unlike Motoko and I, obviously not holding hands.

“Uncharmed too, I’m sorry!” Natsumi teased, and David snorted.

“As if I was trying. But if you’re that cheeky, fangirl, you and your ‘sister’ here…” he nodded at Motoko, whose lips twitched into a smile. “…will get a fine lesson in the Octagon when we spar.”

“Oh, we’re looking forward to it.” Natsumi giggled. Behind us, Shaeula was eager for her dance, and so I took her hand, while Motoko was next to dance with David, again, keeping an elegant sense of distance, as if he was a father or uncle. Once the dance was over, Shaeula, being shorter, an entirely different experience to take a turn with, we again exchanged a kiss, as that seemed to be part of our dancing ritual, if nobody else’s, and Eri was waiting for her turn. After Eri, Asha was next, then Tsukiko, and I continued to dance with woman after woman, without rest.

As Daiyu took her turn, the grey and ivory folds of her dress shifting like elegant wings as we spun and stepped, I noticed something odd. The President was standing at the side, a sour expression on his face, as he was staring at me. Seeing my own gaze, Daiyu snorted.

“He is most displeased none of us would dance with him. He asked all of us, but we rebuffed him, of course. His intentions seem rather impure…”

Daiyu’s scathing judgement didn’t shock me. “I bet he didn’t take it well.”

“He tried to pretend he was only asking out of politeness. But we are far from fools.” Daiyu scoffed. Indeed, my girls were very choosy about who they’d dance with, and not just to spare my jealousy. David was fine for Natsumi and Motoko, because he was almost a mentor-like older brother to them, their brief time spent together building mutual respect. Shaeula and Eri had taken a turn with my father, and some of our other relatives had danced too. But outsiders, the girls dismissed without any compunction.

“I’m glad. I warned Kana not to cause an international incident by crushing him to death. It’d be worse if I bathed him in Foehn.”

“It would have amused me.” Daiyu surprised me with her rare humour. “I hate the way his eyes licked over me. My position in the Sect insulated me from that somewhat, but the eyes of other male Cultivators, and even a few female ones, were always the same. As if eager to devour me, possess me. Consume me.”

“I get why, but… don’t worry, I’ll protect you.” I boasted, and Daiyu’s black eyes crinkled in amusement, shimmering like obsidian.

“Protect? You have already consumed me. Though the experience was joyous.” We danced more, those words hanging in the air, before she shook her head a little.

“I must be fair though. I believe he is also, and rather more, frustrated because you are not free to talk business with him. And Hinata and the others have frustrated him, by refusing his overtures. Still…” As we stepped rhythmically, Daiyu cast her gaze out over those who hadn’t danced with me yet. “…while he Is not alone in that, it seems that Fortune does not smile on them. You will be dancing a while yet, Akio.”

I will indeed. Finishing the dance, we kissed, and after another couple of my women took a turn, my next parter was grinning at me cheekily, taking my hand.

“Being a bit bold tonight, aren’t we, sis?”

“I’m a new me.” she insisted, smiling brilliantly as she took my hands. “Besides, I danced with dad, and uncle. I even danced with Eleanor’s brothers. Me, dancing with Princes…”

“So how was it? Were you charmed?” I asked teasingly as the orchestra began again, and we were in our own little world. Our dance was the sort that David had done with Motoko and Natsumi, without close contact, but even so, the world was watching.

“Wow, no way, bro. I mean, Henry seems nice enough, and while he’s a bit conflicted about you and his sister, he wants her to be happy, and he trusts you. Richard, well… yeah, he’s got a lot of complex feelings. I get that. But me, charmed by them? Dream on, bro. Got my own Prince Charming here, haven’t I?” At those words, she changed the dance, coming in close, switching to the same sort of dances I’d been doing with the others.

“Wow, thought you’d panic there, bro.” my sis giggled. “Guess you don’t want to mess up in front of everyone?”

“Oh, I am rather nervous.” I admitted, but that wouldn’t stop me dancing. I had promised my sister, and I’d meant it.

I know you did, bro. And… it felt different. Some words couldn’t be said out loud. Not because they couldn’t be heard, but because they were only for the recipient to understand. I was both happy and hurt before. But this time… look, I’m not trying to be awkward, I’m just… just greedy. That’s okay, isn’t it?

I gave my answer though our dance, and seeing my sis smile, the sort of smile she used to have, before it became one that she’d given to deceive herself, I knew I’d made the right decision. Even if…

“Still, it’s like being tortured by a thousand needles, these stares…” I grimaced to Aiko, who was tight against my chest, fingers interlaced with mine as we followed the dance.

Aww, poor baby. You’re dancing with your beautiful sister. You should be happy. And proud!”

“And I am, even so… no. As long as you’re happy, I am.”

“And I want you to be happy. So don’t just go along with everything, okay?” Aiko’s words were soft. Else that’s just like before. And we made our resolve. I mean… our minds, our spirits, they’re one now, yeah?

I guess so. Though you can switch if off whenever you want.

Oh. Don’t worry, I know. Can’t think of a reason why I’d want to though. But that you forged this especially for me… well, it’s the difference between Brother’s Bond and Lovers’ Link, isn’t it?

Forgetting everything, just concentrating on Aiko as we danced, our thoughts raced as we spoke to each other through them, no walls.

Lovers’ was always plural, even when it was just Eri. Whereas for me, it’s singular. Because I’m your only blood-related sister. For now, anyway. Mom’s looking super young and healthy…

I’m not sure I want to think about that

Hey, everyone does it, bro. You do enough of it. Oh, but you know I haven’t yet. Just a little self-care, you know?

Don’t think I needed to hear that…

Says the guy who’s had sex in front of me a number of times. I haven’t forgotten when you made love to Eri in Vegas. I know it was an emergency, but you came out swinging, bro… never forgot that. It haunts my dreams at night sometimes…

Get Haru to fix that… I joked, understanding. I never intended these things, they just happened, and…

It’s embarrassing when you take my joking seriously. I’m just lightening the mood, or… deceiving myself, I guess, But I’m too exhausted with that. And Eri’s such a nag about it. She bullies me super hard, big bro. But even Eri won’t cross any final lines, because she knows the truth. What we don’t do for ourselves, we don’t treasure…

Even our thoughts fell into silence, and as the music wore down, my sis shifted in my arms a trace regretfully, now speaking out loud. “I don’t care about Haanōbō, or Suzu-chan, Kanami-chan or any other sisters you pick up. In fact, I’ll treat them as my own, Because I’m your sister, yeah, but… I’m also Aiko. I don’t need our relationship to be a chain, or to keep us close. That’s not what Connection means to you, is it bro?”

“Yeah. A Connection has to work for everything so connected, else it isn’t a Connection, but a means to dominate. It also thus needs to be flexible.”

“Yes.” The dance came to an end, and I loosened my grip on her, but she clenched her fingers, holding me for a moment. “I like flexible. But don’t be saying they should be breakable. That’s too sad, and you’ve gone off course there, bro.” She glanced over at Mae, who was talking to my parents, wearing a magnificent golden gown and red heels and hat, her tails and ears dismissed, looking extremely human. I can see how she conquered those Empires with her charms in the past…

Hey, I’m being serious here…

Sorry.

“True Connections should never be broken. But you can indeed change what they signify. What they impose. Now then…” She grinned wickedly. “Cheeks, bro. I’m not mean enough to ask for the lips, but I’ll be damned if I’m the only one who doesn’t get a kiss!”

“Fine.” What am I to do with you, sis?

As I kissed her on both cheeks, rather like a Western greeting, she giggled.

“What do you want to do? No, I’ll be good. Wow, damn, I’m so jealous of Eri and the others. Being the centre of attention is awesome.”

She led me back to the sidelines, where my father was frowning, but we were interrupted by mother-in-law Hana, who had an odd smile on her face. “Little Aki, little Ai, what a wonderful dance. You looked just perfect together out there. Why, I could have mistaken you for my Eri for a moment there, little Ai…”

“Oh, you flatter me, auntie.” my sis demurred, giggling. “But yeah, you think I’m going to miss the chance to dance with my bro when everyone else is?”

“Oh no, no, you should definitely take advantage when you can.” Hana was chuckling now. “It’s admirable how close you are. Admirable.”

Despite her kind words, and my sis seeming to swell up, like a balloon stuffed with pride, I was starting to sweat, sensing a dark undercurrent. Fortunately, my hand was taken by my next partner, and I glanced down to see it was Michiru. Her expression was adorably shy as she gazed up at me, and while I hadn’t danced with all my girls yet, they seemed content to let her step in. I suppose if they didn’t allow it, she’d have no chance to get close…

“Thank you.” Michiru flushed slightly as we took to the floor once more, under the sounds of the orchestra. Michiru’s father, Takeshi-san, was watching with a resigned, almost bitter expression, and seeing that as we twirled, she snorted.

“Do not mind honoured father. He accepts that I am yours now. Oh, no, that is premature of me. I am not truly yours until you have claimed my chastity.”

Only my prior experiences with Michiru, and her nature, allowed me to remain composed. “To you, it might seem like that. But we need to get to know each other better first, before we can discuss that.”

“Oh? You think so?” Michiru danced beautifully, despite being on the shorter side of the women I’d danced with, like Shaeula. “If so, that is my shortcoming, as Miyu-sama and I both know you are the one for us. The only one fit to be our master!”

“Uh, wouldn’t husband be better?” I asked, trying to keep up with her pace.

“We prefer a clear line.” she insisted. “And even the Queen can see it. You like us, do you not?”

“Yes, I do. Even so, there’s no need to rush…”

“But there is a need for fun. For pleasures Miyu-sama and I have been denied.” She winked. “Akio-sama, indulge in me, indulge in us.” She then leaned up on her tiptoes, not interrupting her dance, as we reached the part where I had to hold her close. “Why not depart for the restroom after this dance? Miyu-sama and I can slip out, and you can consummate your love for us. Then, dance with Miyu-sama in front of everyone, while her belly is full of your seed! I shall likewise be soiled…” Her breathing was speeding up, face red, and once more I realised that Michiru was beyond saving, and that it would take someone special to handle her, someone prepared to put in a lot of effort. If she fell in with the wrong sort of man, she could easily be broken, or even if not, she’d quickly break him. I guess in some ways Michiru’s senses are keen. It would take me to keep her safe and in line.

“…everyone would know, but none here would say, all too refined and worthy to disgrace us. That is the dichotomy which makes me hot. My panties are soaked. If you lift up my skirt, you can feel it…”

“Nope.” I had to laugh. “Michiru, you are adorable, but you do need to learn how to calm down. Firstly, this is Ellie’s engagement party, so it’d be rude to her to take another woman or two’s virginity during it. Secondly, I’m not embarrassing us in front of so many important guests, and thirdly…” As she began to pout rebelliously, I surprised her by breathing into her ear, giving it a cheeky, hidden lick. As she flushed, my words only intensified her arousal and joy. “…when the time does come to become one, I want you to be able to properly enjoy it. It’s a time any woman only has once in her life. To do it in a bathroom in a hurry, well, you’d regret it forever. That means I’d regret it too…”

“Oh.” Michiru fell silent, and her eyes glimmered wetly. In the end, she said no more during the dance, but her face was crimson and her breath came fast. Despite her shock, she danced beautifully, and at the end I leaned down to give her a peck on the lips, but she quickly turned it into a full, deep kiss. I felt it a little inappropriate, but then my treacherous inner voice reminded me of what we’d already done together, so it hardly seemed much by comparison.

“Thank you. I feel refreshed. And I better understand my heart, now…” Michiru offered her thanks. “…but I still hope one day to be marked by you, so that all can know I am your woman, your toy, your treasure. Miyu-sama also.” With those provocative, heartfelt words, I was left a little bemused. The President glanced over my way, raising his arm to beckon me over, only to be disappointed, as Miyu cut in, blocking my line of sight, offering me her arm.

“It is presumptuous of me, but I would dearly like to dance next. Watching Motoko, Natsumi and Hyacinth last time made me greatly envious. It is a regret I would dearly love to extinguish.”

“It’d be my pleasure.” I grinned, and we joined the next group of dancers.

“Mine too.” Miyu admitted. “I hope Michiru did not cause you too much annoyance.”

“She’s… forthright.” I chuckled, holding Miyu close. As expected, she danced utterly beautifully and was captivating everyone’s eyes. In fact, I felt aether rising, and even my Chakra network seemed to be stimulated.

“I am the Chosen of Ame-no-Uzume…” Miyu smiled, her dark eyes placid as she stared deep into my own grey ones. “…more importantly, I am a student of Imperial Kyomai, and I have, of course, just as Motoko and Natsumi have, Hinata too, been trained for these sorts of balls. Though I never enjoyed them before. Dancing with someone you love definitely makes it feel different.”

“Love, huh?” She’s not messing around. That hit me right in the heart.

“You surely do not doubt me, doubt us?” Miyu asked, and I shook my head.

“How could I? I know you’re not a fickle woman.”

“You are too kind. I have shown you many of my ugly sides. Michiru too, of course. I am eager to accept punishment.”

“If you are eager, it’s not really punishment.” I chuckled, and she shrugged, making sure to press her body against mine, her tight dress leaving little to my imagination.

“A gentleman would humour a lady. But truly, we do deserve your reproach. But I have been told a ‘thank you’ is rather more welcome to receive than a ‘sorry’ so instead, let me strive to win you over. Even the Queen can see we have a connection. And she is very shrewd.”

“That she is.” I agreed. “Look, you’re very much my type, Miyu, and you seem to have integrated well with the group. If I’m honest, I’d very much like you to be with us in the future, but… it wasn’t ideal, was it?”

“No, it was my shame, my desperation. My cowardice. But at least you understood our hearts, and we yours. So if you have no wish to punish me, how about a reward?” she whispered. “For being so good to me, I would give you my virginity, my physical one, for you have already claimed my spirit. After this dance…”

I cut her off with a laugh. “You and Michiru really do think alike. I’m sorry, but I’m not going to have sex with you here. Even with as beautiful as you both are tonight.”

“How regretful. But honestly, I did not expect you to be so bold. Though I am indeed prepared. My underwear is very scanty.” Her giggle was utterly charming. “In truth though, I do feel it would be best to settle this matter soon, if only for my own peace of mind. I would like to show father and grandfather I have truly become yours. What better way to do that than for you to subdue me, and make me a woman in truth? Going before them no longer pure would reassure both them and me I am a valued woman you shall cherish, and also dominate.”

“Yeah, I thought Michiru was the perverted one, but you’re just as bad.” I chided playfully, and her fingers on my arm as we danced were oddly sensual.

“Of course. We were made for each other, though she is frightfully persistent. I will be glad to handle her together with you. While we do not share the more… platonic… relationship Motoko and Natsumi do, our wishes to never separate are equal. And in you, we have found someone who can accept us, for all we are, all our dirty, disgusting inner flaws. After all… you listen to me seriously even now and show no disdain, despite my eager desires leaking free.”

“How could I? I know you, Miyu. And I promised to take responsibility for you, didn’t I? I guess it was then I fell into your clutches.”

“Indeed, you should be far more careful what you promise. But you are improving in that regard. Though I believe you made a couple more reckless agreements which will have to unravel as we expect. Now then…” Our final part of the dance was drawing all eyes, Miyu surrounded by a halo of aether, the world around us responding to her grace. “…let us Dance together. I love to dance, and I love you, so… this is bliss. Oh, and I believe I promised you a piano recital, did I not?” Her eyes were alight with passion. “There should be a suitable one we can use. Later.”

“I look forward to it.” As the music swelled to a crescendo, Miyu finished up in my arms, and her lips parted, and there was no real way to refuse gracefully, not that I wanted to, so we kissed, tongues tangling. As our lips parted, she gulped down every trace of my saliva, reminding me of Michiru.

“As do I. I look forward to every day now. I never thought that would happen. I suppose it took the world breaking to make my dreams possible. Now then…” Miyu’s lascivious self was veiled by her noble mask as she straightened her dress. “…others are waiting.”

“Yes, it seems they are.” I had to agree, seeing the hungry gazes on the girls I hadn’t danced with yet. It seems they are…

“Are you sure you’ll be all right? You’re trembling.”

Haru was in my arms, as we began to dance, and she looked paler than usual, quite the feat. Seeing my concern, she only returned a tremulous smile.

Of course I’ll be all right. I’m not scared… no, I suppose I am, just a little. But not of you. It’s just a physiological reaction brought on by trauma. But it’s utterly bearable. I could get rid of it temporarily by the Light Of Muted Emotions, but… I only use it as infrequently as I can. Otherwise I’ll never grow stronger.

Strength is necessary, yes, but… so’s your happiness and comfort!

I know. But I want to one day be free of the darkness in my heart. Else we can never be truly and lastingly happy.

I like that you said we.

Of course. You should know me by now. It took a lot of courage for me to admit I’d fallen for you. What if you rejected me? After all, you never showed any interest in me, or any desire…

You know why that was…

And I’m grateful. But a woman’s heart is complicated, so it still frustrates me. But now you’re honest… sometimes, like now, I tremble a little, but… it also tastes sweet.

Our dancing wasn’t as graceful as with Miyu, of course, nor even Motoko and Natsumi, but we had good stats, and Haru already had an idea of what to do, so we looked good together. I could see her father, Akimitsu-san, dabbing at his eyes as he watched us, and I resolved to protect his daughter’s happiness this time around.

I know I couldn’t have saved you, we’d never even met, but… I still regret it.

I’d love to say something trite like ‘I don’t, as it brought us together’ but I’m not a liar. I’d give up anything to not have to go through that. But… I’d also trust that we’d meet, sooner or later, since I was a Chosen, and… we’d fall in love regardless.

How romantic. But yeah, you’re very lovable, Haru.

Oh, aren’t you a charmer? I’d best watch you don’t beguile me.

Maybe I am, but you’ve stopped trembling, haven’t you?

“You’re right.” Haru agreed, using her voice. “I have. My heart is hammering fast though.”

“Don’t you usually say you don’t have one?” I teased, and she flushed, her unnatural pallor receding.

“I do, but… right now that feels wrong. I know I definitely have a heart. And it feels alive. Though…” She winked at me as we danced. “…you’ve been quite the playboy today. Even if not all of it’s been your fault.”

“Yeah, I’m afraid you have to accept that side of me. In return…” I held her close as the dance indicated, bending my knees, and Haru’s beautiful dress swished, leg peeking out from the slit in her skirts. “…I’ll hold you any time you need the trembling to stop, and if you want to feel alive, I’ll make your heart beat fast and loud.”

“You’ve definitely…” …grown smoother since we first met. But… I’ll take you up on that offer. Now then… a big finish. I’m afraid I’ll be headline news like the others tomorrow…

I guess so, but… “…it’s not such a bad thing. I like showing you off to the world.”

“You’ve shown off more than me.” Haru countered, rolling her eyes, but we did indeed finish strong, and Haru’s lips pursed.

You sure?

Yes. Like I said before, my lips weren’t tainted…

None of you is tainted. From head to toes, inside and out, you’re flawless and pure.

I know. In my heart, I get it. But… it’s hard. I’ll remember your words though. Now… go on, kiss me!

It wasn’t as fierce a kiss as I had with the others, but our lips locked, and our tongues gently stroked each other’s, and I licked at her lips as well when I pulled free. Offering my hand, I guided her back, and Haru was surrounded by the girls, congratulated by them for her boldness, and I smiled, only for Mae to step up.

“It is rather… off-putting, you looking like a proud father watching his daughter succeed. She would hate that…”

“Maybe so, but I can’t help it. I am proud of her. Even if it wasn’t with me, I’d admire her resolve, her dedication to not letting that bastard win.”

“Do not lie to me. You are a jealous, greedy man. But all men of power should be, so I shall accept it.” Mae snorted, offering me her arm. “These dances are foreign to me, but I have seen enough. Now come.” She practically dragged me to the floor. Mae without her tails and ears was absolutely stunning, and her golden dress could barely contain but her luscious curves and her charming legs.

As we danced, it was actually a little awkward, as her chest made it hard to do some of the close moves, but she merely raised one reddish-gold eyebrow, and moved closer, her breasts squishing against me. I tried to ignore the heavenly sensation, which only amused her further.

“You know, if I didn’t have high stats, I’d be collapsing by now. Nobody else has done more than four dances, and I’m into double figures already, with more to come…”

“is that really what you wish to say to me?” Mae’s smile was a little feral, and I shook my head.

“No. I was wondering why you were late. I wasn’t expecting you to come at all when you missed the original transfer.”

Better. I shall even forgive you for not complimenting me on my alluring countenance.” Mae teased me, perhaps settling into an old, familiar role she had performed countless times in the past. “It was simply… Liena was close to waking. Have no fear, I have set my errant granddaughter to watching her. She was sorrowful to miss this occasion, but she knows that Liena and Caihong’er are important to me. And thus to you.”

I nodded. “Will… will it be all right?”

“My granddaughter, young Hana, is quite capable. Her illusions will keep Liena sleeping, at least for now. As for her… compensation… I trust you will not be stingy?”

“Fine. I’ll show her a good time. Within reason.” A tail brushing session and a meal out in Tokyo, something like that…

“I am not one for paying debts… it led to this sorry mess, but I have found I appreciate those who do.”  Mae grinned wolfishly. Our dance was eye-catchingly aggressive. “It makes it easy to understand my place. Now Liena, I believe she will at least listen long enough to calm down and avoid the worst case of willing herself to death. But I would need to be present. She fears me but knows me. And unlike her mother, she is young on the Path of Cultivation, she is not as consumed by it as Caihong’er, nor as knowledgeable. I can beguile her into believing there is hope. Or is it even trickery?” She tilted her head playfully, and I had the feeling she was doing it on purpose. “After all, it is true that in time we shall find a method to restore her.”

“I don’t believe it’s wrong to tell a few half-truths if it’s to save someone from suffering.” I agreed, and Mae snorted.

“Not even a lie, but a half-truth? You indeed are more a spiritual being day by day. But that is better for me, for all of us. Now then…” She smirked. “…if I had my tails free, I would wrap you in them and show them the sensuous dance of the great Daji. Alas, they would make this dress quite useless. And you would not wish me to bare myself before all these others, no?”

“I admit I’d like you to value yourself more. Others too.”

“Oh, you chide me. How adorable. But I shall listen. Men feel so superior when a powerful woman submits. I shall give you that joy for now, in praise for your efforts. You dance well…” She took my hand and bent her knees, as if curtsying, before leaning up and taking my lips. I was caught off-guard, mouth opening, and her tongue squirmed in. I responded instinctively, and after she pulled away, she touched her lips with one finger, smiling wickedly.

“Consider that both payment for my dancing, and a reward. Now then, the next is waiting. And it seems to be… interesting.”

Following her gaze as she led me back to the waiting girls, I noticed Yu-mi was there, in her vivacious and actually quite sexy blue gown, with silver adornments, her hair pinned up in a graceful mass, pinned by silver and sapphire jewellery. Behind her were her Korean companions, Soo-ah giving me a cheeky wave, stretching so I could see her full figure in her white gown with gold trim. Yu-mi was with her father, and also a woman I didn’t recognise, but who was surely her mother. Seeing me observing, her mother, who was beautiful, but didn’t look much like Yu-mi, her taking after her father in looks, seemingly, she frowned, a furrow between her eyebrows showing she was annoyed or troubled. Both, most likely.

Yu-mi was fidgeting restlessly, but on seeing us approach, she smiled. “Akio. Great. I… wanted you to meet… my mother. Mom, this is Akio, he’s…”

“It’s not like I don’t know who he is, Yu-mi.” Her tone was cold, as she appraised me. Yu-mi’s father, Do-yun, seemed to shrink in on himself. The only upside was that our fellow guests who wanted to talk business with me and were getting frustrated by the delays sensed the suddenly tense atmosphere and backed off, except for the President, of course, who was still watching on, his gaze sticky and persistent.

“I reluctantly accepted my foolish husband’s words, that only you could save my nephew. It seems it turned out to be true, but even so… to offer my daughter as a sacrifice…” She paused, realising that airing her family’s dirty laundry here was foolish, not that we had any right to complain… we’re not the best at keeping private matters out of the public eye. Though we are improving…

“No, we will talk about this later. Anyway, I am Park Ju-eun, Yu-mi’s mother. I suppose it is good to finally meet. The journey here was rather… awe-inspiring, I suppose.”

“Mom, please. I’m dying here!” Seeing Yu-mi blushing as her mother verbally fenced with me was adorable. “Akio, please, take me away before I cry!”

Chuckling, I offered her my hand, and as the next song began, it was actually quite a slow, romantic one in comparison. Responding, Yu-mi got closer to me, and we rocked and stepped, holding each other close.

“Sorry about that. Mom… she was against it from the start. In fact, I think it might have driven my parents to divorce, if you weren’t such a gentleman.”

“I’m glad then. For many reasons.” I winked, and she let out a relieved breath.

“Me too. Don’t get me wrong, I was fully prepared for the worst. Like I said back then, I couldn’t have complained even if you had a taste of me there and then. I’d have just needed to dry my tears, grin and bear it, and hope you decided I was worth the effort you’d have to put in to save Yu-jun. Even if I was just treated as a concubine or a toy, I’d not be able to resist. I was so bitter. But… I couldn’t let dad suffer, let my cousin, all he has left of his sister, die. You know, I think you’d understand that better than anyone. You certainly did put on a show with Aiko earlier.”

“It was just dancing.” I insisted. “But yes, she didn’t see why she couldn’t dance the way she wanted, just because she’s my sister.”

“Oh, I get it. But so do you.” She was now the insistent one. “My dad loved my aunt nearly as much as you love your sister. He treasured her. If your sister had a child, and then passed away, you’d look out for him too. And don’t say anything cliché like ‘oh no, my sister, getting married? I won’t allow it…’!”

“Of course I wouldn’t. If my sister loves someone, I’ll support her. He’d best be a good man though. But I trust my sis has good enough taste and self-esteem not to pick up trash or cheating bastards.”

“I don’t know about that.” Her teasing tone robbed her harsh words of their sting. “Anyway, once I told dad we were dating, he blamed himself. But really… it’s not like I haven’t dated before. Though like I’ve told you, it’s never been that serious. A few kisses, perhaps a little bit more. We’re spoiled rich girls, sure, but we don’t go too far. I’m a virgin, rest assured.”

“I don’t think that matters.” I insisted. “I’m not.”

“Don’t I know it.” Yu-mi’s face was pressed to mine, cheek to cheek, as our hands interlocked, arms outstretched. “But to me it does matter. But it also means I’m not that easy. Despite what you might think. I was really drunk that night in Gangnam.” Her face was pink. “I can’t believe I was half-naked, so casual with you. I’m not that sort of woman ordinarily. I guess, even then, you’d captured my interest.”

“You were pretty sexy.” I admitted. “But what I liked best was your kindness. You really helped Eri and me understand each other.”

“I guess I should have tried harder. Like my body more!” Yu-mi blushed but sounded serious. “But yeah, I’m nobody special, but… I’m practically normal and rich with experience… interpersonal experience…” she insisted. “…not romantic. So I can offer insight you oddballs might not understand. Though Kana gets it too. Anyway, back on topic… I don’t have long. After dad asked me to talk to mom, I thought the best way would be to show her I like you, and you me. So I prevailed upon Arisu-san…” She used the honorific for her, and I didn’t blame her. “…and asked her to fetch mom. I’m just… sorry it might be a rough conversation. But… win her over, and we’ve got the green light!”

“I’ll do my best.” I promised. “Though the fact I’ve been kissing so many other women…”

“Yeah, majorly bad first impression.” Yu-mi had to giggle, leaning her head against me, her hair done up gorgeously, exposing her swan-like neck, giving a far different, more noble impression than her usual charming wavy locks. “But you’ve won harder battles, so… do your best! Though I’m afraid I’m not going to make it easy for you.”

As the song ended, we kissed. Her tongue was gentle, tender, and it wasn’t terribly passionate, instead, perhaps an expression of her calm personality, but it was heartfelt, and as we parted, she was blushing charmingly. “I liked that. You’re pretty good. not that I want you to think I’ve kissed loads of guys. But you’re definitely number one!”

“Sure I am.” I laughed, and Yu-mi turned, to see her mother staring at us.

“Yeah, I’ve made your life harder, but… it gets worse. Dance with Soo-ah-unni and the others, please? Though you don’t have to kiss them… unless you want to, of course. But they came all this way for a reason. It’ll help our plans in Korea, getting you the justice you deserve. Besides… they’re all quite taken with you. And why wouldn’t they be? We’ve got great taste, we women of the Gangnam rich girl scene!”

“Showing off, were we?” Park Ju-eun asked frostily, and I bowed deeply.

“No. I wouldn’t dream of being so crass. But I would much appreciate you hearing us out later, with an open mind. I promise you, Yu-mi won’t be unhappy. I’ll make sure she wants for nothing…”

“Except an honest husband…” Ju-eun snorted. “But I suppose I can do you the courtesy of listening.”

“Then, Yu-mi darling, hand him over!” Soo-ah cried cheerfully, grabbing my hand. “Chin Soo-ah, Adamant Heart, requesting this dance. And one thing we’re good at…” the other Korean women nodded. “…is dancing. Though maybe not this sort.” She winked playfully, and with a resigned smile, I extended my arm to her. Will I get the chance to catch my breath, or will I be the only poor bastard who has to dance non-stop all Ball?

I ended up dancing with all of the Korean recruits, though the kisses at the end were on the cheeks. Most of them seemed willing to go further, especially Soo-ah, who was extremely flirtatious during the dance, but contrary to what people thought, I wasn’t desperate to ensnare other women, and besides, I had a sneaking suspicion Soo-ah was trying to help Yu-mi along, giving her more impetus to ask.

I had no rest after, either. Seeing David smirking at me from where he was drinking with everyone while I danced was irritating, but what amused me greatly was Miyu, who pointed down at her own feet, her smile somehow both aggrieved and fond. I get it. What goes around comes around, I’ll be sure to be nicer to you when I’m working you hard on your Dances…

I also danced with Arisu, a uniquely frightening experience. Though she was impeccably elegant and an excellent dancer as expected, her gown was as daring as always, so I had to be careful not to touch her inappropriately, and at the end, her black eyes had gazed at me in silence, before she sighed and tapped one cheek, and I gave her a brief, chaste kiss of congratulations, before she retreated.

Not good for my heart, that wasn’t, not at all.

Now I was dancing with Kanami-chan. She seemed a bit overawed by everything, but I’d brought her, so I had to take responsibility. She looked energetic and cute in yellow, reminding me a bit of Yasu-kun’s cousin, Hisano-chan, actually. Once she’d got used to the stares on her, Kanami-chan had started to enjoy herself, and now we were dancing quite well.

“You know…” she remarked. “…Akio-kun… or is that too informal?” As I shook my head, her smile broadened. “Akio-kun then. I’d feel strange calling you brother, but I appreciate the gesture, nonetheless. So yes, you know… I’m a little scared. My parents… I can’t believe they’d do that.”

“Yeah, it surprised us too. But then, it’s not like they treated you badly. They obviously still loved you…”

“I know. But…” Kanami-chan hardened her expression. “…they put my life, and the lives of my friends and classmates, and everyone in Japan, in danger just for money. If they’d stopped after the attack on Hanafubuki, I might have been able to forgive them, but… they didn’t. They kept on selling information. I… kind of hate myself…”

“Oh?” I raised an eyebrow, and she flushed.

“You’re supposed to tell me I’m being overdramatic, Akio-kun.”

“No, actually right now I’m supposed to listen.”

“Fine then. If I’d never have written things I shouldn’t have in my diary this might not have happened…”

“Yes, it was a bit foolish, but then, who’d expect your parents to be so cold and calculating? If so, they’d have squeezed information out of you anyway.” I reasoned. “Now I’ll tell you not to blame yourself, but I’ll also tell you to be much more careful in the future.”

“I know. I suppose, if I’m to make amends for their mistakes… I don’t want their whole futures to be ruined.” She paused, her hands tightening on mine. “Don’t get me wrong, Akio-kun. I’ve cut them off, even if… when… they’ve paid for their crimes, I won’t go back. But… they raised me with so much love up until now, I feel…”

“That’s family. Connections that can’t be severed, but sometimes need to change.” I understood what my sister meant before, where I’d gone wrong, my ideas close to what was needed, but still subtly off. “Don’t worry, we’ll take good care of you. You’re among friends. And… yes, your parents have to be punished, but as you’ve said, it’s not like they are sentenced to death. Nothing’s over. But for now…”

“But for now, I’m happy to be in your care, Akio-kun. I’m very glad you’re the lord Adamant serves.” With a smile, she reversed the usual kissing routine at the end of the song, kissing my cheeks playfully, before darting off, face red, lowering her broadbrimmed hat to cover her face. Watching her go, I shook my head, unable to understand it. How could her parents do that to her? I’d say maybe they didn’t understand, but she’s right. If they’d have stopped after the attacks, it would be natural. Greed… greed is a terrible thing… oh, wait a minute…

I spotted Zachary and Bethany. Zachary was in the same sort of evening jacket and suit combo as the rest of us men. Thinking about it, men really were plain at these sort of events, compared to the beautiful flowers of every colour and style which were the women. And Bethany stood out. She was in black, mostly, though she had some silver lace and trim on her dress, and her hair had been styled artfully, slanting to one side, revealing an ear studded with cute earrings. Somehow she managed to look both classy and rather gothic. Seeing me coming over, Zachary nudged her playfully with his elbow.

“Congrats, sis.” he joked. “Looks like Akio’s come to ask you to dance.”

“Don’t be a pain in the ass, Zack.” she shot back, before her eyes widened in surprise as I approached. Remembering Adam’s offensive words, I found myself examining her more closely than usual. Yeah, she’s actually damn cute. And would definitely have been a woman I’d take a second look at, back in uni. Though I wouldn’t say she’s entirely my type…

“Say something…” Bethany muttered, face red, and I realised I’d let my gaze linger a moment too long.

“Sorry. I mean, if you want to dance, I’m game, but actually…” I then explained that I didn’t want her going home to America yet, to hang fire for a bit. Zachary burst out laughing, his expression amused.

“You’ve done it, sis! You’ve charmed a man who’s marrying a Queen! And a Goddess! I’m so proud of you!”

“Oh, shut it, brat!” She kicked him in the shins, and he continued to laugh. I then realised I’d said it the wrong way, probably letting Adam’s words influence me subconsciously.

“You misunderstand. You need to stay too, Zachary. At least for now. Let Fenrir scout the way first. Your father has advised you not to return yet, hasn’t he? It’s not… safe.”

“I know. But he’s worrying far too much.” Zachary sighed. “And Beth wants to resume her studies, and misses her friends and party lifestyle. Though if she wants a boyfriend, she should stay here. She’s upset most of the guys there with her sharp…” He grimaced, kicked again. “…tongue and temper. Akio, I’m amazed you asked her to dance. She’s not mild-mannered like your girlfriends…”

“If you think they’re all that mild, you’re not paying attention.” I chuckled. “Now I’ll be serious. We can transfer you back the way we moved to Britain at some point soon once we see it’s safe. But right now, I think your best bet is staying.”

“Do we get a choice?” Bethany asked, her expression serious, and I nodded.

“Of course. You’re allies, and… I hope you’ve made some friends here during the trip.” They nodded, which pleased me. “So I can’t compel or order you. But… it’s for your own safety. So…”

“Fine. I’m annoyed, but…” Bethany stood and offered me her hand, before shaking it in the air after a moment. “Go on then. I’ll dance. I might never get the chance again, in front of a Queen.”

“I think you’ll find you will.” I laughed, ignoring Zachary’s jeers. On the dancefloor, which was mostly deserted now, everyone else but me having had their fill, except for the President, who had danced with Catherine, though I presumed she’d listened to me and not told him anything yet, we began our dance, a slower, waltz-like one, which suited Bethany, as she wasn’t that confident.

Halfway through, she broke the silence, leaning in close, voice a whisper. “What’s really up? My brother’s full of shit. You’ve not taken a fancy to me, and I know it. So… is what dad says true?”

“We’re investigating. But… we have proof all isn’t well.”

“Great. So we’re stuck here.”

“It won’t be so bad. We’ll train you both, keep you entertained, and like I said, we’ve plans. Coming and going might soon be as easy as taking the subway.”

“That’d be nice…” she sighed. “I suppose I should look on the bright side. I can take a leave of absence from college. And I guess I won’t be short of money…”

“Nope. Nor pleasant company.”

“Hitting on me after all?” she snorted, and I shook my head in denial.

“No, just talking up the girls. Hanging around with them is never dull, is it?”

“I guess not.” As the waltz wound to a close, Bethany turned her cheek, and I softly and quickly kissed it, before she offered the other, and I repeated my gesture.

“You didn’t need to do that…” I told the pink-cheeked young woman, but she merely shrugged.

“You think I can be the only one who doesn’t? You even smooched your sister. And that ice queen Arisu. It’s just a peck on the cheeks. I’m a grown woman. Confident and unbothered. Swe Americans aren’t as precious as you Japanese about such things.”

“You sure are…” I laughed, taking her back, ignoring her slight blush, and Zachary winked at me, giving me a sly thumbs-up, to which all I could do was shake my head. I danced a few more turns with other women waiting, both my fiancées and others, and soon it was time for the final song, and I’d had absolutely zero breaks. Nobody had any sympathy for me though, which made sense considering I’d spent hours dancing with an assortment of beautiful, adorable and cute women.

Finally, it was Kana’s chance, and taking my hand, she led me to the dancefloor for my final turn. Smiling at me warmly, she grinned. “You’ve had it rough. Don’t worry though, you saved the best until last.”

“Sure I did.” I agreed playfully, and she faked a pout.

“Be more sincere. After all, I did as you asked.” As the music for the dance, a stately, slow one, rang out, Kana was held close to me, and her steps were sure and matched mine. Surprised, I glanced into her eyes questioningly.

“Not that it matters, but I’ve watched the others dance, and I am a girl who likes romance. Of course I’ve studied a little. Never anything so grand though. That’s down to my stats. Back to what matters… I helped that lady check out the President. It all looked normal to me, but she said it wasn’t right. My Eyes aren’t as good as yours, but she got me to tweak them a little through Haru’s Telepathy. I’ve probably Ranked them up. You should definitely praise me!”

“Oh, I will, I will. So how’s this night? Matching your romantic dreams?” I asked, as I held her in my arms.

“Exceeding it, honestly. I never, in my wildest, greediest, most narcissistic fantasies, expected to be dancing with a Prince in Buckingham Palace…”

“I’m not a Prince yet…” I countered playfully, and she snorted, hands tightening on mine.

“Oh how thoughtless of me. I’ll have to make do with a mere Duke.” Kana retorted. “However will I cope?”

“I hope you never have to find out.” I laughed in response to her adorable cheekiness.

“If I do, that means the world’s screwed, so I’ll live. Or probably won’t.” Kana was suddenly serious. “Look, Akio, I don’t want any regrets. This… this is magical. And there’s more to come. London date, yeah?”

I nodded. “Shopping too.”

“That would have thrilled me before. But it seems boring now. Don’t get me wrong…” She hurried to clarify as we danced. “…I want the finer things in life. Cute and sexy clothes, nice jewellery, to eat in classy places… but not for my own sake. I want to look cute to you, sexy for you, elegant, and worth taking to places like this, the world you’ll be a part of forevermore. And I want to eat good food with you, laugh with you, spend time with you, and also with Eri and the others… what I want out of life has changed. I even want to take pride in what I’ve built. In the future, I want our children to look at tunnels and buildings and other wonders and go ‘look dad, mom made that…’” Kana flushed adorably.  “I’m not thinking of children any time soon, but… one day. What I’m trying to say is…”

I merely watched her as we danced, enjoying how calming, soothing and just all-around relaxing it was to be with Kana. She had a way of making everything and anything effortless fun.

“…I think we’re building to it.” She winked, her brown eyes twinkling with mischief. “So look forward to it. I know I do!"

The song ended with a flourish, and not shy, Kana seized my lips. We exchanged a very passionate kiss, which went on, and on, and on

Even I’m starting to be a bit embarrassed…

Finally, Kana pulled away, licking her lips, to clapping and jeers, my sister adding her loud catcalls. It was at that moment the orchestra began a rousing chorus of God Save The Queen, sparing my blushes, as we retreated to our companions, Kana clinging to my arm, well-satisfied.

“Very bold, Kana.” Eri chuckled, and Kana, still clutching me, shrugged.

“Got to have a big finish. Now then, how to avoid the jackass?” She lowered her voice as the President was coming our way. Fortunately, as the song ended, the Queen interfered.

“We must apologise, but we fear the festivities are over. We thank you all for coming, be you receiving Honours, worthy guests, or becoming part of the family. Now then, if you will excuse us, we have a private family gathering now, so…”

“I won’t take much of their time.” the President insisted. “I just need a little to hash out some details…”

“We believe you are not rushing back to America just yet, are you?” Her tone brooked no disapproval. “We are sure my grandson-in-law can spare you some time tomorrow or the day after, yes?”

Keeping a straight face, showing none of my displeasure, I nodded. “I’d be honoured. But as you can imagine, I have a lot to discuss with her Majesty and Ellie’s other relatives. Plus we’re tired from our long day…” I was going to say it was a long journey, but that wouldn’t work.

“Fine then. But I’ll hold you to that. Many people would kill to get to do a deal with me, and the last one went great for you, didn’t it? I do the best deals, biggest deals, everyone says so.”

I had to listen to more of his annoying chatter, before I extricated myself, saying my farewells to a troubled Catherine, as well as the others who received Honours. That done, the President could no longer detain me. The Pope had already vanished with his entourage, and that reminded me…

Grabbing Ellie, I told her I had to go attend to some business, and that I’d be back soon, so she had to cover for me. She seemed a bit doubtful, but nodded, and I gave her a hug, revelling in her red-faced enjoyment of it. Slipping out with the other guests, I pulled on a non-descript hooded jacket, suitable for the British winter chill, and quickly headed to my destination, that humble bar.

A bit downmarket compared to the Palace, but that’s perfect… Once inside, I scanned around, before spotting David in the corner at the back, where he could watch the exits, and had a window he could break in an emergency. Seeing him, he looked awful, eyes bloodshot, face pale, hands fidgeting restlessly. Check the hands, Kana says. If so, then he’s either a junkie now, or he’s gone without much sleep for days on end, without the benefit of stats…

“You came then?” he spotted me instantly, beckoning me over, and as he did so, I was about to quip that he looked dreadful, but then I spotted someone else, someone familiar at the table with him.

“It’s been a while…” the placid, slightly amused smile of Mrs Carrie Srensen, the Chosen of Bragi, greeted me.

Been a while, you say? I blinked, processing her unexpected arrival. I suppose it has…
