Chapter 357: Registering At The Imperial GuildAll of the guards near the one that had interpellated the trio immediately gripped their weapons and began to approach.
Their reptilian eyes were fixed on Leon with hostile intent as they closed in from all sides.
’Wow, these guys really suck,’ Leon thought, gripping his own sword in hand as he prepared for the worst, his muscles tensing as he assessed the situation and calculated his options, ’There’s nothing I can really do though without causing a massive scene.’
Causing any problem was bad enough on its own, but it was even worse since Celeste and Emilia were with him and he didn’t want to put them in danger, especially when they had been waiting for him for over a month.
"Alright, you want money or something?" Leon’s expression darkened as he stared down the lead guard, his voice carrying a dangerous edge that made the air around them feel heavier.
"Not exactly," the guard shook his head with a sneer, his forked tongue flicking out briefly, "We get paid rather well actually, what we want is..."
"...You’re not getting the girls, so just forget about it," Leon spoke, this time his aura slowly rising around him as his patience began to wear thin, the pressure of his power causing the nearby guards to shift uncomfortably.
The guard trembled slightly as he looked into Leon’s eyes, a flicker of fear crossing his reptilian features even though he was level 100 and the human before him was only level 86, a gap that should have made him confident but somehow didn’t.
Leon hadn’t expected for him to fight this early into his arrival, but if it came to it, then so be it, because he would not back down from a threat and he would certainly not let anyone disrespect his companions like this.
Leon was about to activate [Time Stop] in case anything happened and he needed to escape quickly.
His mind was already running through the motions of using the forbidden spell for the first time in a real situation.
But right as it seemed the tension reached its absolute peak and a fight was about to break out, he heard a voice cut through the chaos from somewhere behind the guards.
"What the hell are you idiots doing out here?" the commanding voice boomed across the place.
As soon as they heard it, every single lizard guard backed away and straightened up instantly, taking a rigid military pose with their hands at their sides, their earlier aggression evaporating like mist.
"S-Sir, we’re investigating this suspicious human, sir!" one of them stammered nervously, his voice cracking under the pressure of his superior’s gaze.
A larger lizard guard with seemingly more authority than the small ones looked down at Leon with calculating eyes, his gaze sweeping over him from head to toe.
"He doesn’t seem to have an ID yet, he likely is here to get one," the powerful guard spoke as he analyzed Leon, his eyes visibly widening for a small instant before he regained his composure, "Scram, human, and let him through before I have you all demoted."
Leon actually appreciated this sudden intervention, and he quickly grabbed Celeste and Emilia’s hands, leading them past the guards and into the giant building without wasting any time.
"Why did you do that, sir?" the guard who had interpellated Leon asked, both scared and outraged at being overruled, "He disrespected us, we could have—"
"Thank the gods that I saved your asses just now," the giant guard groaned with clear frustration, shaking his head at their stupidity, "You would have stood absolutely no chance against him, in fact, you’d be dead meat before you even knew what hit you, so be grateful."
Hearing their leader say that, the lizard guards looked at each other and gulped nervously. Their earlier confidence completely shattered by the revelation.
"Let’s go now, there’s something happening soon that we need to attend to," the leader said, turning and walking away without another word, leaving his subordinates to scramble after him.
Meanwhile, as they entered the guild building, Leon noticed that it was mostly filled with players except for the natives that worked behind the counters and desks, the interior spacious and grand with high ceilings and ornate decorations.
Their levels ranged from 80 all the way up to 100 for some of them, a wide spread that showed the diversity of the kingdom’s population.
The trio reached the main desk, and after Emilia spoke to the receptionist briefly, she simply nodded and placed a contract on the desk for Leon to sign, the parchment looking old and official.
"Pour some of your blood on this paper, and you will be automatically registered in our system.
From there on, you may be able to complete quests of varying difficulties to gain eternal coins or prestige within the kingdom," the receptionist explained professionally, her voice smooth and practiced from years of experience.
"...?" Leon stared at Celeste and Emilia with a confused expression, but they simply urged him to do it with encouraging nods, their eyes telling him it was fine, ’Why would I ever want prestige anyway.’
"I can tell from your gaze, sir," the receptionist smiled warmly at him, "Many people believe it is useless at first, but as they stay here longer, they realize that the Imperial kingdom actually rewards its most prestigious recruits really well with exclusive opportunities."
’Recruits?’ Leon lowered his eyebrows with suspicion, not liking the sound of that, but he decided to go along with it for now, "Alright, fine."
He took out his sword and pricked his finger lightly, the sharp blade drawing a small bead of blood.
Small droplets of crimson fell onto the paper and seeped into the parchment, the liquid disappearing as if absorbed by the paper itself.
As soon as this happened, an emblem of a cross lit on fire appeared in the middle of the paper with the text "Celestial" burning brightly beneath it, the flames flickering for a moment before settling into a steady glow.
"Congratulations, Celestial," the receptionist announced loudly, drawing the attention of everyone nearby, "You are now a member of the imperial kingdom, you simply need to pay the 100,000 Eternal Coins fee to confirm it, though you can also complete quests instead to—"
"I’ll pay," Leon cut her off, feeling the gazes of the other players on him after hearing his ID spoken aloud, their whispers already starting to spread through the hall.
100,000 Eternal Coins was literally nothing to him at this point, so he sent it over without even budging an inch, the transaction completing in an instant.
"Thank you," the receptionist bowed respectfully, a genuine smile on her face, "Then you are officially a member of our glorious kingdom now, make sure to enjoy your time here!"
"Sure," Leon said flatly.
