The moment they saw the principal’s body...
Silence swallowed the group.
Verm froze and her sword slipped from her hand and hit the ground with a dull clang.
Chadi stood there, unable to breathe.
Even Timon stayed quiet.
Qasim looked between them in confusion.
"...That monster must’ve been incredibly strong."
He lowered his head for a second.
"I’m... sorry for your loss."
Before he could continue—
"Stop."
Verm’s voice trembled.
She slowly turned toward him, her calm expression completely shattered.
"Do you even understand who’s lying in front of you?"
"That is Michal Luxiron."
"The principal of this academy..."
"One of the strongest people in the entire kingdom."
Her fists tightened.
"The only reason I thought we still had a chance..."
"Was because he was here!"
She looked at the ruined battlefield around them.
"But now... It’s over."
"We’re fucked."
Nobody argued.
The others’ faces said exactly the same thing.
Qasim looked at the enormous corpse of the monster beside the principal.
"...Then that monster was Third Step too."
He took a deep breath.
"Which means the principal gave his life to kill it."
He looked at them one by one.
"So why are you acting like his sacrifice meant nothing?"
Everyone looked at him.
"The Scientists are strong."
"We all know that."
"But they can’t casually create two monsters like that."
"If they could, the kingdom would’ve already fallen."
He pointed at the dead creature.
"Their strongest card is gone."
"Yes...So is ours, I understand that."
"But that doesn’t change one fact."
"On average...We’re stronger."
"We’re all Mahik."
"We still have teachers somewhere."
"We still have students."
"We still have numbers."
"So instead of sitting down and waiting to die..."
"...how about we actually fight?"
Kevin nodded immediately.
"I agree."
Verm remained silent.
After several long seconds...
She looked away.
"...Whatever."
"I still think we should return to the infirmary."
"It’s the safest place."
Qasim sighed.
"Fine."
He looked at the others.
"So?"
"Who’s coming with me?"
Chadi raised his hand.
"I’m going back."
Not surprising.
What surprised Qasim...
Was Timon.
"Tch."
"I’m not risking my life in this pitiful place."
"I’m returning too."
Finally is Zerni.
"I’ll go with you."
Qasim smiled.
"Let’s go."
---
The three continued deeper into the academy.
Kevin kept checking every hallway.
Every classroom.
Every corner.
Burning walls.
Collapsed ceilings.
The good news is that they found some dead monsters which means there are some strong people fighting.
That gave Qasim hope.
*As the main character I need to save them and defeat the evil, hahah classic me.*
Qasim was already imagining how this event will end like in the novels he read.
After a while Kevin suddenly spoke.
"What if we check the main gate?"
"The knights guarding the academy should still be there."
Qasim nodded.
"Good idea."
They changed direction.
On the way they found several injured students.
Thankfully none of them were in critical condition so Qasim sent them toward the academy infirmary before continuing.
A few minutes later...
Another monster appeared.
Unlike the previous one, this one wasn’t made from corpses.
It looked like a giant mass of green slime.
Zerni distract the monster while Qasim prepared his spells.
Kevin then throw some rocks on it and it despaired inside.
No effect.
"So physical attacks don’t work."
Qasim confirmed that magic is the best way to deal with this monster.
A fireball exploded.
The slime screeched.
The battle quickly became chaotic.
Fireballs.
Wind Blades.
Earth Spears.
Thunder Spears.
Spell after spell filled the corridor.
Every time the slime regenerated...
Qasim simply threw another spell.
Several exhausting minutes later...
The monster finally collapsed.
Its body melted into black liquid.
Qasim looked around the remains.
He frowned.
*Why the hell don’t the monsters of this world have a mana core?*
*If they did, I could easily take them out just by destroying that core.*
"Careful with your mana."
Kevin pointed at the battlefield.
"You’ve been casting nonstop."
"I’m fine."
"I have almost infinite mana."
Kevin chuckled.
"Good joke."
Qasim simply smiled.
---
Eventually...
They reached the academy’s training grounds.
And stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Only looking at disbelief.
Spread across the field were eggs.
Dozens of them.
Forty...
No... Fifty
Each one was almost taller than a person.
"What..."
Qasim whispered.
The three slowly approached.
Zerni struck one.
Nothing.
Qasim fired a Light Beam.
The egg didn’t even crack.
He cast some high damage spells, but still nothing happened to the egg.
Kevin walked closer, examining the shell.
"...I’ve seen something similar in old books."
"It’s probably a mix of some animals and... Mythical creature."
Qasim’s eyes widened.
"Dragon eggs?!"
Kevin immediately shook his head.
"No."
"Dragons no longer exist."
He swallowed.
"I think... These resemble the eggs of the Great Serpent."
"The mythical creature said to roam beneath the oceans."
"They’re far smaller than the original."
"Maybe two percent."
"Maybe even less."
Qasim imagined forty giant serpents hatching at once.
A chill ran down his spine.
"We have to leave."
Kevin took a step back.
"This is beyond us."
"We need experts."
"Thankfully..."
"They haven’t hatched ye—"
BOOM!!
A deafening explosion shook the academy.
The ground trembled beneath their feet.
Smoke rose near the main gate.
Qasim’s heart suddenly tightened.
Valen.
He didn’t know why.
But ever since becoming Mahik his instincts had never failed him.
"Come on!"
He sprinted toward the explosion.
Kevin and Zerni followed.
As they reached the gate...
The scene finally became clear.
Teachers.
Guards.
Injured students.
Fire everywhere.
But they were alive.
And standing among them talking was a familiar figure.
"Valen!"
Qasim shouted.
Valen turned around.
The moment their eyes met...
A relieved smile appeared on his face.
