Valen ignored Yorness and went straight to his office despite the old man calling after him. Once inside, he took his time hiding the documents and cleaning the room.
*This will piss him off.*
Valen smiled to himself before slowly making his way back to the meeting room.
As expected, his team had already started reacting to his absence.
Doran looked upset, Levia was hiding behind him, Qasim was zoning out, and Yasmin sat silently, watching Yorness.
But what surprised Valen was Yorness’s reaction.
Instead of turning red with anger at Valen’s audacity and wasted time, the old man simply stared at him with cold, serious eyes.
"Sit down, brat. I have a mission from the king, with the reward promised to the boy."
Qasim’s eyes suddenly sparkled when he heard the last part.
Valen noticed his reaction and let out a small sigh of relief.
*Yes, my boy. This is more like you.*
He then turned toward Yorness.
"So? Tell us already and stop wasting time."
He said it while yawning.
Yorness’s eye began twitching, but he closed them and took a deep breath before speaking.
"You and your team are expected to go to a small village near the Goblin World. The king believes that, while the war is still going on, the goblins might try to invade us from that village."
He paused before continuing.
"Your duty is to protect the village and make sure to clear out any goblin companies."
The old man tilted his head forward.
"Once you can prove that the goblins can no longer attack us from that side, your mission will be over. More rewards await you if you succeed."
"How can we prove it?" Valen asked.
"That’s up to you. Be creative. I don’t care how you do it, as long as it’s done."
Yorness gave him a mocking smile.
"After all, aren’t you the genius one?"
Valen didn’t seem bothered by the provocation.
"Your provocations have gotten worse, old man. What happened? Has dementia finally affected you?"
"Laugh all you want, brat. But you know that I value work above all, and the king’s orders even more. So I won’t waste my time debating with an ignorant, traitorous successor like you."
Yorness narrowed his eyes and deepened his voice as he said the last words.
Both Doran and Levia felt their anger rising as they heard the old man call their old team traitors.
Doran wanted to speak, so he looked toward Valen for approval.
But he was shocked to see that his captain’s expression hadn’t changed.
Valen wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t offended.
Instead, he looked as if he were thinking about something.
*A village near the Goblin World. Could it be?*
Valen’s eyes widened.
He looked directly at Yorness.
"What’s the name of that village?"
Yorness paused for a moment before giving him a familiar name.
"Juris."
Valen immediately spoke.
"I’m going alone on this mission."
The others stared at him in confusion and shock.
"What do you mean by that? Did you lose your mind? Or do you really think you can handle the goblins there alone?" Doran asked with a frown.
"T-That’s right, Valen! We have to go together!" Levia added.
Qasim and Yasmin exchanged a glance.
Both of them thought of the same darker possibility.
Is this the mission you want to die in, Valen?
Before Valen could explain his decision to the team, Yorness interrupted with a cold voice.
"Disapproved. The king himself ordered the entire Team Four to participate."
Valen clicked his tongue and tilted his head while staring at Yorness.
"No point giving me that look, brat. It’s the king’s order."
Yorness paused for a moment before narrowing his eyes.
"Or maybe..."
He frowned.
"Maybe you want to challenge the king’s order? Is that what I’m supposed to understand from your reaction, Valen?"
"No. We accept the king’s order, right, Captain?"
Doran turned toward Valen with a serious expression.
Valen continued staring at Yorness for several seconds.
Then he quietly laughed.
The laughter grew louder.
Soon, his laughter filled the entire room.
Valen raised his fist toward the old man.
"No, of course I accept the king’s order, Yorness. And once we return, we’ll be heroes while you stay here as the king’s dog."
He tilted his head.
"Remember, Yorness. A dog that doesn’t do its job is worthless."
"Big words from someone like you."
Yorness responded coldly before picking up the suitcase and opening it.
Inside was a strange, dark-blue glass ball, about the size of a hand, with several red dots glowing inside it.
"This—"
Yorness was about to explain when Doran suddenly shouted.
"This is a space artifact!"
"..."
The old man stared at Doran.
Doran cleared his throat.
"Sorry."
"As the baldy said, this is a space artifact. That means it has the ability to manipulate space."
Yorness held up the artifact.
"For this one, its ability is to swap the positions of two people."
"Only the brat is allowed to use it since it’s the king’s gift." Yorness handed it over to Qasim.
"To activate it just point it at the person you want to swap position with and scream active."
Doran’s shining eyes faded slightly after hearing the artifact’s ability, but he was still excited.
Qasim noticed this.
"Is a space artifact really that good?"
"Well, this one is a little more boring than I expected," Doran admitted, "but yes. Time and space artifacts are so rare that finding even one could make your name known throughout history!"
Doran tried to control his voice, but his excitement was obvious.
Qasim’s mouth dropped open in shock.
Seeing his reaction only made Doran more excited.
"That’s not all. You see those red dots inside?"
He pointed toward the glowing dots.
"I’ve never seen anything like them. And believe me when I tell you, I’ve studied so many ancient artifacts that this one must be older than anything I’ve ever seen before!"
Doran placed a hand under his chin, lost in thought.
"Well... my theory is that these red things are related to fate."
"Fate?" Qasim asked, confused.
But Doran was too focused on his thoughts to hear him.
Yorness then left the place with a gloomy expression and moment later, Valen announced that they needed to get ready for the mission.
*I’ll ask him later.* Qasim turned and headed toward his room to change his clothes and hide the space sphere inside his jacket pocket where it barely fits.
