Qasim raised an eyebrow when he heard the name of the half-goblin again. He stepped a little closer and asked,
"Is she okay? I mean..."
He wasn’t sure whether these goblins knew that Zyra had helped them escape the prison.
Fortunately, the goblin’s answer relieved him.
"Yes. No one found out that she helped you, if that’s what you mean."
Valen scratched his chin thoughtfully.
"Interesting. If she told you this, then it means she trusts you..."
Doran turned toward his captain.
"Still, we aren’t allies anymore. No matter how you look at it, we’re in a war, and we’re currently invading their forest, so..."
"That’s fine!"
The goblin’s sudden shout caught everyone’s attention.
He immediately bit his lip and lowered his hand.
"It’s fine because it’s not safe in here anymore."
He paused for a moment before raising his head again, his voice filled with anger.
"There are some monsters that emerged from the dungeon a couple of days ago. My master confirmed that they’re the same ones that killed our friends!"
A chill ran through Qasim’s body as he remembered the long, expressionless faces of those monsters.
"Those things escaped? How? What happened afterward?"
He swallowed and asked in a low, worried voice.
"Yes. My master doesn’t know how, but strangely, the first thing they did was run toward this forest."
Levia tightened her grip on her staff.
"H-How many are there?"
The goblin swallowed.
"Around fifty..."
Hearing that there were fifty of those monsters somewhere in the forest made Qasim’s heart nearly leap out of his chest.
"I don’t think we should go any deeper, Valen..."
Qasim turned toward his captain.
"Yes, I agree."
Valen then looked at the goblin.
"By the way, why did Zyra send only five Mahik to such a dangerous forest?"
The goblin shook his head.
"We aren’t alone. This was an order from the government. Every division was told to send a group to watch over this forest."
Yasmin suddenly broke her silence.
"I don’t sense any other goblins around."
"P-Probably because they aren’t in this exact area," the goblin answered.
Valen let out a long sigh.
"Can I ask you a weird, unrelated question? Have you seen any unnatural roots roaming around, or something similar?"
The goblin took a step back, puzzled by Valen’s question.
Then he raised a finger.
"Oh... Now that I think about it, we did notice a strange place that isn’t on the map for some reason. There are some weird-looking plants around it too."
He paused and looked at his friends.
Then he slowly continued,
"If you can assure our safety, we can lead you there."
Doran turned toward Valen with a confused expression.
"What do you need from a place like that? We’re done here, Valen. Our mission is complete."
Valen gave him a small smile and patted Doran’s large shoulder.
"Yes, you’re right."
His smile remained.
"And that’s why I’ll go to that place..."
He paused.
"Alone."
Doran narrowed his eyes and was about to say something, but Yasmin interrupted him.
"I’m going with you."
She said it with a straight face.
"I’m coming too."
Qasim joined in.
Both of them stared at Valen with determined eyes.
Their serious expressions made it clear that neither of them intended to change their minds.
Doran and Levia noticed the tension between the three of them.
Despite leaving being the safest option, Qasim and Yasmin were determined to enter a place where they had no idea what was waiting for them.
They felt left out.
As if the other three knew something they didn’t.
Levia felt increasingly worried about it.
Doran, however, simply accepted it.
"Fine. Let’s all follow our mighty captain..."
Valen turned around.
He could see the dissatisfaction on both Doran and Levia’s faces.
He bit his lower lip and clenched his fist, closing his eyes as he thought.
*I can’t tell them... I don’t know what faces they’ll make, and... I don’t think I can take it.*
He opened his eyes.
A fake, forced smile appeared on his face.
"Well then, let’s go now so we can return home early."
The goblin, who was helping his friends back onto their feet, watched the whole interaction with an uncomfortable expression.
"So... should we guide you while you protect us?"
"Yes."
Valen answered simply.
...
After helping the other four goblins back onto their feet, they began guiding Team Four through the forest.
Step by step, they moved deeper into the trees, passing different kinds of plants and animals.
But slowly, the atmosphere began to change.
The air became heavier.
The vibrant green of the forest began to fade, replaced by gray and lifeless colors.
The ground changed from dirt and grass into strange gray roots.
The plants and trees became fewer and fewer, replaced by long, twisting roots that spread across the ground.
The lively, healthy forest gradually transformed into a silent, colorless valley.
Then—
Some of the roots began moving.
They twisted toward the team and attacked.
But every time, they stopped just before actually striking them.
The team was confused.
But more importantly, they were highly alert.
The farther they traveled, the more frequent the attacks became.
And the roots were becoming more threatening.
They were hesitating less and less.
"Careful, Levia!"
Doran shouted as he blocked a root attacking from above.
The team was forced into battle against the roots.
Qasim focused on protecting the five goblins while the others protected the entire group.
The boy was confused.
The roots didn’t attack the goblins.
They didn’t attack him either.
But that only made him more worried as he watched his teammates come under increasing pressure.
The team was trapped in a difficult situation.
They had to protect themselves while continuing to move forward.
"Yasmin, careful behind you!"
Valen shouted.
"Doran, keep holding the back with Levia!"
He quickly looked toward Qasim.
"Qasim, you’re safe, but keep your guard up!"
Valen kept track of every change in the battle.
"Levia, save your mana! No need to attack. Focus on defense and let Doran handle the attacks."
Another root struck.
"Yasmin, if you need to rest, switch with Qasim!"
He constantly adjusted their positions and controlled the battlefield while providing support to everyone.
"If you feel tired, tell me! I can reinforce you and boost your attacks too!"
Valen then focused on the path ahead.
But suddenly—
Something appeared in the distance.
A building.
Only a silhouette, barely visible through the trees.
But Valen was certain it was there.
His eyes widened.
"Everyone, keep holding them off just like this! We’re close to—"
A root suddenly pierced through his side.
Valen’s body jolted.
Qasim’s eyes widened.
"VALEN!"
He immediately rushed toward his captain.
