Chapter 181: Chapter

Yueqing’s back slammed against the wooden door, her heart hammering against her ribs as she stared at the stranger in utter disbelief. Her brain completely stopped functioning for a solid three seconds.

"Nine?!" Yueqing gasped, her raspy voice barely a whisper as she pointed a trembling finger at his face. "What... what are you talking about?!"

The handsome man stepped back, snapping his folding fan open with a stylish clack and fanning himself with a proud, beaming grin.

"Ta-da! Do you like my new update, Host?" Nine chirped smoothly, his voice carrying the exact same smug, theatrical tone he always had in her head—except now, it was coming from actual, physical lips.

"You... you have a body?!" Yueqing hissed, throwing a quick, frantic glance toward the door, terrified that Lu Yue might hear her talking to a strange man inside her locked bedroom.

"A full-body physical construction update, to be precise!" Nine said proudly, puffing out his chest. "During my two-month system maintenance, I realized that being a voice inside your head just wasn’t cutting it anymore. If I’m going to help you survive this chaotic novel world, I need to be here physically to assist you!"

He took a elegant step forward, his white and light-blue silk hanfu swaying softly in the dim moonlight.

"And the absolute best part?" Nine grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "My physical form is fully customizable!"

With a light flick of his wrist, Nine snapped his fan shut and waved it right in front of his face.

A soft, shimmering blue light flashed for a split second, and suddenly, the tall, handsome man vanished. Standing in his place was Lu Yue—complete with her stern expression, dark guard robes, and her hand resting naturally on the hilt of a sword.

Yueqing’s jaw dropped. "Lu... Lu Yue?!"

"Surprise!" ’Lu Yue’ spoke, though Nine’s playful voice came right out of her mouth.

Nine waved his fan again. Flash!

Now, standing in the middle of the room was Li Mei, the original female lead.

Flash!

Yueqing’s breath hitched as the figure shifted again. Standing before her was Xi Wenzhe, tall, broad-shouldered, and wearing his dark fur cloak. ’Wenzhe’ lowered his head, staring at her with cold, dark eyes, before raising the fan and giving her a teasing wink.

"Stop! Stop it!" Yueqing whispered frantically, clutching her aching chest as she glared at him. "Change back right now before I lose my mind!"

Nine let out a soft laugh and waved his fan one last time. In a swirl of faint light, he reverted straight back to his original form: the strikingly handsome young man with long, silky black hair, clad in elegant white and light-blue hanfu.

He leaned against the wooden table, fanning himself casually with a confident smirk. "So, Host... what do you think of System Version 2.0?"

Yueqing took a long, deep breath, her hands trembling as she slowly lowered them from her face. She stared at Nine, at his proud, handsome face, his perfectly combed black hair, and his pristine white and blue silk robes.

"What do I think, huh?" Yueqing muttered. Her pale, emotionless face suddenly cracked into a dangerous, twitching smile.

Nine’s smug grin faltered slightly. He blinked, shifting his weight. "Host...? Why are you looking at me like you want to dissect my hard drive?"

"Tell me something, Nine," Yueqing asked, her voice dangerously sweet and soft as she took a slow step toward him. "With that brand new physical body... can you feel pain?"

Nine lifted his fan defensively, his eyes darting toward her. "Well... technically, yes! My sensory circuits are calibrated to simulate physical touch and pressure, so I can register impact pain! But don’t worry, I’m not made of blood and flesh, so I won’t bleed or get injured! Why are you ask—"

"You useless, lazy, radio-silent little machine!" Yueqing roared.

Using every single ounce of strength left in her weak, sickly body, Yueqing snatched up a heavy wooden footstool from beside the vanity.

Nine’s eyes went wide as saucers. "WHOA—HOST, WAIT—!"

CRASH!

Yueqing swung the wooden stool with all her might, missing Nine’s head by a hair’s breadth as he ducked down with supernatural speed, his white robes fluttering frantically.

"Sixty days!" Yueqing shrieked in a furious, hushed whisper, chasing after him as fast as her frail legs could carry her. "Sixty agonizing days of total radio silence! I thought Wenzhe was dead! I thought my ribs were broken forever! I laid in the dark for two whole months calling your stupid name, and you were taking a cosmetic beauty nap?!"

"It was an essential system framework overhaul!" Nine yelped, sprinting around the central tea table, his long hair flying behind him as he held his fan up like a shield. "I couldn’t abort the update! If I aborted, my hard drive would have fried! Ah—watch the porcelain!"

THWACK!

Yueqing threw a heavy silk pillow right at his face, hitting him squarely in the chest. "I don’t care about your hard drive! Stand still and let me hit you once! Just once!"

"No way! My pain sensors are set to one hundred percent accuracy!" Nine ducked behind a wooden pillar, peeking out with wide, terrified eyes. "Host, you’re sick! You’re supposed to be bedridden! Where are you getting this terrifying adrenaline from?!"

"From pure, unadulterated hatred for my system!" Yueqing gasped out, her chest heaving as she stumbled around the table, brandishing a heavy bronze candle stand in her hands.

The two of them tiptoed, dodged, and darted frantically around the dark bedroom, Nine ducking behind curtains and hopping over chairs while Yueqing relentlessly pursued him like a vengeful ghost in her dark blue robes.

"Just stay still, let me hit you once, please... I demand you stay still! STAY STILL NINE, I COMMAND YOU!"

Because she used an official command, Nine’s feet froze on the carpeted floor against his will. He squeezed his eyes shut and held his fan over his face. "Ahhh! Mercy, Host!"

Yueqing stumbled forward and brought the heavy bronze candlestick down, hitting him right on the arm.

CLANG!

"OW!" Nine yelled, holding his shoulder and making a dramatic face, even though no bruise formed on his skin. "Direct hit! I get it! I’m sorry!"

That single hit completely drained the last bit of energy from Yueqing’s weak body. Her knees gave out, and the candlestick slipped from her cold fingers, hitting the rug with a dull thud. She stumbled toward her bed and collapsed onto the mattress, breathing heavily while her long hair spilled messily across the pillows.

As her energy faded, the heavy sadness returned to her face. The anger in her eyes disappeared, leaving behind the same empty, broken look. She lay on her back, staring blankly at the dark ceiling with her hand resting over her sore ribs.

Nine slowly lowered his fan and walked over to the side of the bed. Seeing how pale and lifeless she looked, his playful smile faded into quiet sympathy.

He sat down gently on the edge of the mattress.

"Host..." Nine said softly, his voice dropping its teasing tone. "Even if I was awake during those two months, I still couldn’t have told you where Wenzhe was."

Yueqing didn’t move or look at him. "Why not? You’re the system."

"There are rules about what information I can share," Nine explained, tapping his fan against his knee. "Especially now. You’ve changed so many things in this story that the original plot is shifting. I can’t just give you major secrets whenever I want."

He leaned closer, looking down at her tired face.

"Besides," Nine added gently, "you should actually be thankful. In the original story, Wenzhe didn’t just come back poisoned... he came back crippled. He lost his legs and could never fight again. But this time? He is whole. He is breathing. He came back alive."
