Chapter 184: Chapter

Yueqing adjusted her sleeves and stepped out of her courtyard, with Lu Yue leading the way and Nine following closely behind as her assistant.

When they walked into the grand dining hall, the bright lights and chatter filled the space. But the moment they crossed the threshold, all eyes shifted toward them. Gu Yue and Qinqin stopped talking instantly, their faces turning bright red the second they laid eyes on the handsome man walking behind their sister-in-law.

"Oh my god, who is that?" Gu Yue whispered loudly, tugging on Qinqin’s sleeve with wide eyes. "Where did sister-in-law find a man that good-looking?!"

Qinqin blinked rapidly, her cheeks flushed as she stared. "Is he a new noble guest? He looks like he stepped right out of a painting..."

Lu Yue stood nearby, letting out a heavy sigh and shaking her head at the two young girls.

Even Aunt Ronghua leaned forward from her seat, her eyes sparkling. "My word, look at those shoulders," she murmured, loudly enough for the table to hear. "If I were twenty years younger—"

Before she could finish, her husband quickly picked up a piece of sweet osmanthus cake and stuffed it straight into her mouth. "Eat your dessert, wife," he muttered, cutting her off to stop her from flirting with the newcomer.

Seeing the commotion, Yunhao, Yunchen, and Gu Xiu burst into loud laughter at the table.

"Look at mother, she’s trying to recruit him on the spot!" Yunhao laughed, slapping the table.

At the head table, Madame Xi looked over at Yueqing with a sharp gaze. "Yueqing, you finally decided to crawl out of your room? Have you actually been sleeping enough lately?"

Though Madame Xi asked with a hint of skepticism, it was obvious just by looking that Yueqing’s skin was glowing and she looked far better than she had in weeks.

The Old Madame nodded approvingly, chiming in with a warm smile. "It doesn’t matter how she looks, as long as she’s eating. I’ll have the kitchen send some special ginger tea over to your courtyard later to help keep your strength up."

Then, the Old Madame leaned forward, beaming brightly as she lowered her voice just enough for the surrounding tables to hear.

"Now that Wenzhe is back and recovering, once he fully heals, the two of you should really start focusing on the important things," the Old Madame said cheerfully. "You should start planning on having babies and giving us a grandchild soon."

The moment those words left her mouth, Yueqing was right in the middle of taking a sip from her teacup.

Pfft!

Water sprayed everywhere as Yueqing violently choked, spitting the entire mouthful right back into her cup while coughing uncontrollably, her face flushing bright red in absolute shock.

["Babies? Are they out of their minds? There is no way I am having children with that block of wood!"] Yueqing thought, her eyes widening in absolute panic as she coughed into her handkerchief. ["And definitely not again! Childbirth is far too hard, and I already went through a lot of pain!"]

Her inner thoughts were kicking up a storm, practically screaming objections at Madame Xi, Aunt Ronghua, and the Old Madame all at once.

At her words, Madame Xi, Aunt Ronghua, and the Old Madame all froze in utter shock, staring at her wide-eyed.

Again?

Across the table, Duke Xi just tilted his head quietly, ignoring the sudden tension as he took a calm sip from his teacup without saying a word.

Just at that exact moment, the heavy double doors opened, and Xi Wenzhe stepped into the hall wearing clean, simple everyday robes, with Dong Li walking right behind him for support. Wenzhe’s dark, sharp gaze swept across the room, landing straight on Yueqing.

"And why can’t we have babies?" Wenzhe asked coldly, his low, raspy voice cutting cleanly through the silent dining hall.

"Wait, why is he out of bed? He’s supposed to be resting!" Yueqing thought, staring at Wenzhe in shock. She never expected the injured general to be up and about so soon.

As Wenzhe walked past her toward the table, he shot a cold, suspicious glare at Nine, eyeing the composed assistant with obvious irritation before finally looking away.

Wenzhe slowly sat down with Dong Li standing right behind him, looking stiff despite his weakness. The heavy tension in the dining hall doubled.

Fixing his piercing gaze back on Yueqing, Wenzhe’s raspy voice cut through the silence.

"You didn’t answer me," he said, his jaw tightening. "Why can’t we have babies?"

["Is he out of his mind? Does he want to humiliate me in front of the entire family?"] Yueqing thought, her heart hammering against her ribs as the dead silence of the hall pressed down on her.

Yueqing forced her jaw to relax, lifting her chin slightly to meet his cold, demanding stare.

"General, you only just returned from the battlefield and you are still recovering from severe injuries," Yueqing said carefully, choosing her words to sound reasonable while hiding her panic. "Your body needs absolute rest and care. Bringing up children right now... it is simply not practical."

"My health is my own concern," Wenzhe replied coldly, his voice dropping an octave as he leaned slightly forward over the table. "You spoke in front of everyone as if the very thought of us having a child is impossible. Answer the question properly, Yueqing. Why can’t you?"

Before Wenzhe could speak again, Madame Xi slammed her chopsticks down.

"Wenzhe, stop," Madame Xi said, glaring at her son. "Stop making Yueqing uncomfortable. Do not talk about such private things here."

Wenzhe kept his mouth shut.

Madame Xi smiled and looked at the family. "Let us eat before the food gets cold."

["Thank goodness for mother-in-law,"] Yueqing thought, letting out a long sigh as she sat back down. ["If he kept pushing, I would have lost my mind."]

Suddenly, Madame Xi’s expression shifted. She just shook her head softly at her daughter-in-law’s inner complaints, already used to hearing Yueqing’s unfiltered thoughts echoing in her mind.

Yueqing started eating, and so did the rest of the family. She reached for a cup of tea, but just as she was about to blow on it, Lanyin warned her that it was very, very hot.

Yueqing had already taken it to her lips, and the hot tea burned her so badly that her hands slipped. The cup fell right onto her lap, and she gasped in pain as her thoughts ran wild.

["Ouch! Ahhh, it burns! My legs! This tea is trying to murder me!"] Yueqing thought frantically, wincing in pain.

Nine immediately rushed to her rescue. He grabbed his own clean cloth and started wiping the spilled tea from her lap. Used to being a crybaby around him, Yueqing grabbed his sleeve, whimpering and complaining through her tears.

"Ow, ow, ow! It hurts so much, Nine! Why didn’t you warn me? My skin is going to peel off!" Yueqing cried softly, grabbing onto his hand and whining like a child.

Nine sighed, gently tapping her forehead with his free hand while reprimanding her in a soft, scolding tone. "Stop crying and sit still. Look at you, you’re so clumsy you can’t even hold a teacup properly. If you keep moving around like a little brat, it’s going to blister. Stop whining and let me clean it."

Everyone at the table stopped eating and stared in shock at how casually the new guard was treating the Young Madam. Then, they quietly shifted their gazes over to Wenzhe.

Wenzhe’s expression instantly changed. His face turned completely dark, his jaw clenching hard as he watched another man lean in so closely to his wife, scolding her and touching her lap while she whined to him.

Seeing the furious look on Wenzhe’s face, Yunchen leaned in close and whispered to his siblings, "Oh boy... this new handsome dude is in trouble."
