"Am I interrupting something?"
A voice came from the doorway.
Luke and Camilia both jumped in surprise.
It was Principal Claris.
Camilia quickly fixed her uniform and stood up straight.
"Principal! No, not at all," she said. "I was just processing Luke’s pass so he can receive his rewards."
"I see," Claris said as she walked into the office. "I arrived at the arena a little late. Tell me, what did Ryan Razael wager?"
"His combat bracket, Principal," Camilia answered. "Luke won it fair and square."
Claris raised an eyebrow.
"His combat bracket? That means he gave up his place in the highest tier."
"Yes. And there’s more," Camilia continued. "Ryan was secretly using a second beast during the match. Luke only fought back, which is why the beast died. It was supposed to be a single-summon duel, so Ryan cheated first."
Principal Claris stopped walking as she listened to all her apprentice had to say.
"Camilia, you handled this well. Luke, come with me. I want to speak with you alone in my office."
Luke humbly followed Principal Claris to her office. As soon as he stepped inside, he noticed her summon sitting on a coat stand in its smaller form. It was a pink owl with beautiful feathers that looked like flower petals blowing in the wind. Its eyes were calm, but they could see through your soul.
Luke was the first to break the silence after Claris sat down behind her desk.
"Principal Claris, I know there was a lot of trouble out there today," he said. "I know I caused a big scene."
"Luke, I understand that you had to accept Ryan’s challenge or lose your supplies," Claris replied. "But even so, I can’t pretend there won’t be consequences."
"What kind?" Luke asked.
"Well, many students might complain to their parents. And there’s something else." Claris paused for a moment. "Your father, the Duke, might get involved once he realizes you aren’t the person he thought you were."
Luke frowned but stayed quiet, letting the Principal finish. She didn’t look very happy either.
"The best thing you can do now is keep getting stronger during this joint term," Claris said. "You need to become strong enough that the Confederacy would be willing to protect you if something happens. Unlike the rest of the country, the Confederacy cares less about nobility."
Luke nodded after hearing that. He already planned to become the strongest. If he reached that level, he wouldn’t even need the Confederacy to protect him from anyone.
"So... am I getting punished for killing Ryan’s centipede?" Luke asked.
"To be honest, no," Principal Claris replied, crossing her legs. "Ryan broke the rules first. If anything, I’m glad no student will think they can walk all over you after what happened today.
"Now, let’s move on to the next matter. I’ll prepare a new boarding pass for you."
Luke watched as she opened a drawer and pulled out a form that looked very familiar. She picked up a pen and started filling it in.
"A new boarding pass?" Luke asked. "Why do I need one? My room is fine."
To his surprise, Principal Claris looked up from her paperwork, sharing his confusion.
"Your room was trashed by intruders. Don’t tell me you didn’t know. That room is no longer safe for you."
"Intruders?" Luke thought in disbelief. "Who would do something like that?"
"I don’t know," Claris replied. "There’s no evidence pointing to anyone. But I have a feeling it was students from our own academy. They probably used Rubverton High’s arrival to hide what they did.
But I promise you this. I won’t hesitate to make sure justice is served once the culprits are found."
Luke clenched his jaw. As he thought about who could have done it, only one face kept appearing in his mind.
Adrian’s smug smile.
"Then where am I supposed to stay tonight?" Luke asked.
CLICK!
Claris stamped the paper before signing her name.
"You’ll be moving into the EX-residential quarters," she answered.
Luke’s eyes widened a little.
The EX-residential quarters? That was where staff members like the Principal lived. It was a much more private and luxurious area than even the one reserved for the highest-ranking noble students.
"I thought all my privileges were gone until I earned them back by challenging other students," Luke said. He wasn’t sure he deserved something like this.
"I’m only moving you there for your safety," Principal Claris replied. "And while you’re staying there, I want us to start our training sessions again. It’ll help you learn more about your strength."
Luke gulped. Just hearing the words training sessions brought back a lot of memories.
Claris noticed the look on his face and immediately realized what he was thinking. She sighed, annoyed that she hadn’t chosen her words more carefully.
"Hey, whatever happened between us before is in the past, okay??!"
"Sure..." Luke echoed a tease, taking the boarding slip from the desk.
Principal Claris watched him stand and leave for the door, petting her owl on his way out. The beast cooed, closing its eyes while snuggling under Luke’s touch.
"Camilia is waiting outside. She will guide you to the EX-residential quarters," Claris offered before he shut the door.
Outside the office, Luke met up with Camilia again. He showed her the paper in his hand. Principal Claris had moved him to the EX-residential quarters.
"Wow. You must be really special to be assigned there, Luke," Camilia said, unable to hide her surprise.
Luke didn’t say anything about the compliment as they left the administrative building. On the way, they passed groups of students who kept staring at them. News about the fight in the arena had already spread across the academy.
Camilia first took Luke to the department so they could submit the paperwork for the bracket swap. The attendant told them the change would take effect within twenty-four hours. After that, they headed to the EX-residential quarters and soon arrived at one of the fortress-like buildings.
The fortress had three student rooms along with the main suite where the Principal lived. Those three rooms were only given to students the academy called Scholars.
Under Principal Claris’s fortress, Luke was now her Scholar.
What Luke liked the most was the courtyard in the middle. It wasn’t too big or too small. It looked like the perfect place to train.
"Take the room on the right side of the hallway," Camilia said as she handed him the keycard.
"Who lives in the other two rooms?" Luke asked.
"One of them is mine," Camilia answered. "The last room is empty."
"Right. You’re the Principal’s apprentice," Luke said, scratching his head. "I don’t know why I didn’t think of that."
"Well, I’m actually happy to have a neighbour," Camilia admitted, half-smiling. "The Principal likes being by herself most of the time, so it gets pretty lonely here."
Luke smiled back, and Camilia couldn’t help but smile fully. Maybe they would have a lot to learn from each other.
She was a non-combat summoner, while Luke was trained for battle. Living next to each other meant they could share ideas, learn new things, and help each other improve.
Luke waved goodbye before unlocking his door and stepping inside.
The room looked a lot like his old one, except it was twice as big and had much better furniture and appliances.
"I guess this is how Scholars get treated," Luke said.
The first thing he did was take a bath. After that, he saved Camilia’s phone number and sent her a message, which she replied to immediately.
Camilia: By the way, I usually have dinner with the Principal, so you don’t need to go to the cafeteria.
Luke: Got it. I’ll be there for dinner.
Luke then checked the rest of his unread messages. Scarlett had asked if he was free to meet up later that night.
He was about to reply when another message caught his attention.
It came from an unknown contact with the handle @Lin_Moon.
@Lin_Moon: Hello, Master Luke. I have contacted the contractors. We are ready to begin work.
