Others Summon, I Forge Beast Armor

At the end of the lecture, Luke and Scarlett headed to the cafeteria for lunch. Luke hadn’t eaten anything all day, so he was starving. Meanwhile, Scarlett was focused on the assignment Professor Mary had given them.

It wasn’t an easy assignment.

First, they had to explain how each factor affected Tether Tension.

Then they had to show the relationship between Tether Load and Tension, where the breaking point reaching zero caused Severance.

Finally, they had to find real cases where a tether had actually snapped and identify which factor had caused it.

"You should just ask people," Luke suggested as they sat down with their trays. "Have you ever had your tether snap before?"

Scarlett looked up from her notebook and thought for a moment.

"Yeah," she answered. "Right after I awakened my Phoenix, my aunt wanted to test its strength herself, so she dragged me into a mock duel.

But I had already spent eight hours training that day. Less than a minute after the fight started, my Phoenix suddenly disappeared. We had to stop the match and continue the next day."

Luke swallowed a bite of meat. "So what caused it?"

"Stamina," Scarlett answered, looking into him. "I had exhausted myself, so my tether couldn’t support the load anymore. If we want more examples for this assignment, we’ll have to spend some time in the library."

Luke nodded and kept stuffing food into his mouth while Scarlett watched him chew like a savage.

Her face stayed as calm as usual, but secretly, she found it a little funny and attractive.

Around the cafeteria, students kept staring and whispering to each other.

Nobody understood how the two of them had suddenly started spending so much time together when the rumors said their engagement had been called off. It made no sense.

Soon, they arrived at the academy library, an archive packed with thousands of books. They searched the shelves for several minutes, but neither could find what they were looking for.

In the end, Luke suggested asking the librarian.

The old woman was sitting in a dark corner with her lizard summon resting beside her.

"Excuse me," Luke said. "Do you have any books on Year Two Tether Physics left?"

"Already borrowed," the librarian sighed.

"All of them?" Luke asked. "By who?"

The old woman just pointed at a reading area near some windows, then shooed them away so they wouldn’t disturb her any longer.

"Looks like one of our classmates got to them first," Scarlett said as they walked over.

"Maybe you should threaten to challenge them," Luke joked. "They might hand the books over."

Even though he was kidding, Scarlett actually liked the idea. She made her eyes glow as her phoenix’s as she and Luke walked up to the desk.

However, the classmate who got there before them wasn’t someone they could intimidate like that.

Black hair that looked like waves in the darkest night. Skin as pale and delicate as ceramic.

Scarlett turned off the glow in her eyes the moment she realized it was Lucy Blackstone.

Lucy was seated with eight books stacked on the desk. One was open in front of her, while another was open in front of her seatmate, Mizuki, the heir to the Shonen Family.

Very quickly, Scarlett placed a hand on Luke’s arm. When Lucy saw it, she lowered her head in defeat. Luke didn’t notice the exchange.

"Sorry to interrupt," Luke said, "but it looks like you have every reference book on today’s topic. Do you think you could lend us a few?"

Lucy was a kind soul, so she was about to agree, but Mizuki stopped her by grabbing her wrist.

"No, what are you doing? Can’t you see how they barged in here? They were about to rob us until they realized we weren’t fodder! Typical behaviour from students of this so-called prestigious academy. Disgusting!"

A big drop of sweat formed on the back of Luke’s head. Mizuki’s accusation was so accurate, even if he hadn’t meant to execute it.

He was about to explain, but Lucy de-escalated the situation.

"It’s okay, Mizuki," she said nicely. "There are enough books for all of us to share."

Mizuki still looked upset, but she didn’t argue anymore. It was three against one now. Besides, if things got out of hand, Scarlett might just challenge her. As a Greater-tier summoner, Mizuki had no chance against a Mythic.

Out of eight books, Lucy generously gave Luke and Scarlett three of them.

Luke noticed something, though. Even though she was willing to share the normal books, she kept three volumes for herself. The one that caught his attention the most was a book about Resonance.

As Luke and Scarlett walked over to an empty table, Luke couldn’t help thinking about what Lin Moon had told him yesterday.

Was Lucy searching for a way to solve that problem?

If he had a summon that hadn’t grown for eighteen months, he would’ve torn the whole library apart looking for answers.

"How come you know Lucretia Blackstone, Luke?" Scarlett asked as they sat down. She tried to sound casual, but she wasn’t very good at hiding the little bit of jealousy she felt after seeing Luke talk to Rubverton’s Queen.

"Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer," Luke answered. "The Blackstones have always been rivals of the Kingsleys."

"The Blackstones are villains too," Scarlett said. "Maybe it isn’t a good idea to get close to them."

"So that’s why you’re worried?" Luke teased.

Scarlett almost answered back, but she quickly realized Luke was trying to get a reaction out of her, so she stopped and said, "Everyone from the Obsidian Order is a villain, Luke. No exceptions."

Luke chuckled.

As he looked up, he caught his reflection in one of the library windows.

Black hair. Red eyes. Maybe he really was a villain after all. Who knew?

Without wasting any more time, Scarlett skimmed through the pages of the books in search of their answers.

It was in times like this Luke knew Amigo’s armor could have been useful. If he were wearing the Astral Tortoiseling Helmet, he could simply activate the All-Seeing Eye and absorb everything inside the books in a few seconds.

But patience is a good friend. By taking their time, both of them were working on the assignment together.

Scarlett was also helping with the research instead of just watching him do everything. If Luke had relied on a skill like that, it would’ve ruined the teamwork they had built.

Unfortunately, the peaceful moment didn’t last long.

Neither of them noticed Adrian and his group entering the library.

Adrian was in Class C. They had originally come to research for another subject, but the moment he saw Luke and Scarlett studying together, his face darkened with rage.

Jax, Mark, and Leo split up and approached Luke and Scarlett from different strategic directions.

Before either of them realized something was wrong, they were already surrounded.

The trap had closed.

Luke and Scarlett quickly stood up as hostile students appeared out of nowhere.
