"Vivian!" Raven yelled as she ran into the middle of the battle.
The fight had been going on for minutes now, loud enough to draw the attention of anyone nearby.
If Raven hadn’t intervened, Adrian would have seriously wounded Vivian or forced her to desummon her beast. She was in bad shape. Her fingers were bruised, blood ran from her nose, yet she still refused to back down.
"How stupid of you to think you ever had a chance," Adrian hissed. "Have you had enough yet?"
Vivian had the summon with the highest potential out of all the Kingsley children, but right now she was still the weakest. Adrian wasn’t wrong. Picking a fight with a stronger sibling was reckless.
Adrian thought Raven would talk some sense into Vivian and put an end to this, but the sight of Vivian’s blood only made Raven furious. She didn’t think Vivian had done anything that deserved this. So rather than stopping the fight, she joined her sister to take Adrian together.
Adrian spat onto the grass while his Golden Griffin roared at the Seraph Leaper and the Crimson Hellhound.
"Of course. The two of you against me. Like always. Good. Saves me the trouble of hunting you down next, Raven."
He still sounded confident, but the next thing he did said otherwise.
He tried to escape many times, but Raven refused to give him breathing room to do so. She was the strongest of the siblings. Together with her beast, Brim, she was powerful enough to defeat Adrian and his griffin, Cassiel.
The only problem was that it wouldn’t be easy.
Adrian was a very crafty fighter. The three of them had trained together since childhood, so they knew each other’s fighting styles by heart.
Soon, the fight became so dangerous for Adrian that he started shouting for help.
"If we kill him together, Father can’t punish both of us," Raven thought, and she was right. If the two of them slew Adrian, the Duke would never bring himself to execute both of his daughters.
Adrian understood that too, that was why he stopped trying to win and started trying to escape the courtyard.
Thankfully, someone came to his rescue.
His mother, Roselyn.
"Enough!"
The fight stopped at her command. At least, Raven stopped, but Vivian didn’t.
She kept attacking until Roselyn cast a magical bubble around Adrian. Every spell from the Seraph Leaper crashed into the barrier, but none of them could break through it.
The bubble was of the strongest tier Roselyn could manifest, which explained why.
"You wicked woman!" Vivian screamed at her stepmother. "Take that bubble down right now!"
The Seraph Leaper kept firing spell after spell, but the barrier didn’t even crack.
"Is that how you speak to me, Vivian?" Roselyn asked angrily.
"I don’t care!" Vivian shouted back. "You aren’t my mother, you witch!"
The words hit Roselyn harder than any spell could with both fury and sadness. For years, she had done everything she could for her late sister’s children, yet they still refused to accept her.
Before things could get any worse, Raven de-escalated.
"Roselyn, I apologize on Vivian’s behalf," she said, calling her aunt by her first name as was normal for them. "We’re going back to our rooms. Come on, Vivian."
Vivian didn’t want to leave, but there was nothing she could do while the shield protected Adrian.
The identical sisters turned and walked into the palace.
Roselyn waited until the girls were out of sight before dismissing the bubble and releasing her son. Adrian dropped to his knees, gasping for breath while clutching his chest.
"Thank you, Mother," he wheezed. "Those girls are crazy! They tried to murder me!"
Adrian expected his mother’s sympathy and her support, but she looked down at him as if he had disappointed her.
"Those two ’crazy girls’ are the road to your father’s heart," she said. "Making enemies of them is the same as making an enemy of the Duke himself."
"What?!" Adrian gasped.
"Pack whatever you need and move to the second palace. You are banned from the main estate for the next week until the sisters calm down."
"What? You’re punishing me too?"
Roselyn ignored the complaint as she turned her back to him and looked toward the horizon.
"As for what you told me about Luke..." she said with narrowed eyes. "I will handle it."
*******
The next morning, the sun rose over the city of New Florence, a thriving metropolis in the heart of Country 1. It was a place where dreams could come true... at least for the privileged.
For decades, New Florence had been home to the Confederacy, one of humanity’s greatest powers. It existed to protect what remained of mankind against the apocalypse that had already swallowed ninety percent of the world’s landmass.
As the capital of Country 1, there was no better place for the Confederacy’s headquarters.
So, who made up the Confederacy? Simple: the strongest summoners.
That gave rise to powerful noble families and famous bloodlines that controlled land, wealth, and resources across the country.
But the Confederacy itself cared less about your family name than your strength. A seat in the Confederacy had to be earned. It wasn’t something you inherited just because your parents were powerful.
In a nutshell, this world was a feudal society.
The apocalypse forced humanity to build a system where strength decided authority, while everyone fought to protect and preserve the little civilization they still had left.
Roselyn Kingsley was the Director General of the Confederacy. Her duty was to oversee the Confederacy’s operations and establishments worldwide, including institutions such as the academies.
That morning, she arrived at her office as usual, located in a 4,000-foot skyscraper that pierced the heavens.
Roselyn stood by the window, quietly lost in thought, until someone knocked on the door. The visitor only entered when she gave permission.
It was Silas, the Warden of the Bureau.
"My lady, did you send for me?" Silas asked with a respectful bow. He could be casual around his friend Cedric, but Roselyn was the Duchess and also the Director General. He had to be formal.
Roselyn turned away from the window.
"Yes, Silas. Do you remember the incident I asked your department to handle a while ago?"
Silas thought for a moment and asked, "Are you referring to the airport demolition, Director General?"
"Correct," Roselyn confirmed, her face neutral. "Godrick the werewolf and one other woman died on that night, right?"
"Yes," Silas answered with a nod. "Those were the confirmed deaths. The reports also mentioned that a corrupted gate appeared before the incident."
Pleased with his replies, Roselyn picked up a tablet from her desk and gave it to him. "Take another look at your suspect sketches from that case," she said. "Then compare them with this."
The truth was, Roselyn already knew the answer.
She just wanted Silas to see the evidence for himself so there would be no mistakes.
Silas accepted the tablet. In one hand were the suspect sketches showing a masked young man and a masked girl. On the tablet was a photograph of Luke Kingsley during his duel with Ryan Razael, using the Seven-Tusk Elephant Sabatons to float above the arena while wearing the very same mask.
!!?
Silas’s face soured like lime, and his eyes bulged out of their sockets.
The masked hunter he had been tracking down was Luke Kingsley all along.
"This boy!" the Warden growled in frustration.
